590 job seekers reveal how AI has changed the job search, and why more applications aren't translating to better outcomes

Washington, D.C. — July 21, 2026 — Clutch today released new research on how AI is reshaping the job search. Among 590 U.S. job seekers surveyed, 80% use AI tools during their search, and 86% say AI has helped them submit more applications each week. Yet 93% worry AI-generated resumes and cover letters make it harder for qualified candidates to stand out.

"This is a hiring arms race. Job seekers use AI to get past AI screening tools, and recruiters are using AI to sort through the volume that creates,” said Hannah Hicklen, Clutch analyst. “AI didn't simplify the job search; it intensified it. The candidates winning right now aren't using AI the most; they're using it the smartest."

Key findings include:

  • AI is standard on both sides of the process. 80% of job seekers use AI to support their search, while 77% believe the companies they applied to used AI to screen their applications, and 80% are fine with it.
  • The job search is still a grind. 45% spend 2 to 3 months searching, and 68% apply to at least 10 jobs before landing a role.
  • Candidates are gaming the algorithm. 94% tailor their resumes for each application, and 80% have changed how they write resumes specifically because of AI screening tools.
  • Job displacement is the real fear. 92% worry AI will reduce the number of jobs available in their field within the next five years, even as 61% say AI has made it easier to find a job than it was three years ago.
