New data from 422 consumers finds that 67% have considered or stopped doing business with a company after a poor AI support experience

Washington, D.C. — June 25, 2026 —Clutch today released new research on how consumers experience AI-powered customer support, finding that despite 87% of consumers using it regularly, adoption has not translated to satisfaction.

Sixty-seven percent have considered or stopped doing business with a company after a poor AI support experience, and 81% have felt that AI support was intentionally blocking them from reaching a human agent.

"Consumers have accepted AI as part of customer support but they haven't lowered their standards," said Hannah Hicklen, Clutch analyst. "They expect fast, accurate resolution. When they don't get it, they leave. Businesses that treat AI as a cost-cutting tool rather than a customer experience investment are going to feel that in their retention numbers."

Key findings include:

  • Speed is non-negotiable. 81% expect AI to resolve their issue in under five minutes, yet 59% have experienced slow or unresponsive AI support.
  • Frustration starts at the interface. 85% have had to repeat or rephrase their question at least once, and 45% feel frustrated the moment they realize they're talking to AI rather than a human.
  • Human escalation is broken. 47% were frustrated by having to repeat their issue from scratch during escalation, and 13% lost context from their AI conversation entirely.
  • Personalization is a willing trade-off. 62% are comfortable with AI having full access to their account history in exchange for more personalized help.

63% of consumers say they would be more satisfied if they could escalate to a human at any point.
