I’m a partner at Delight Ventures, a Japanese venture capital company. I lead DelightX, an acceleration program by Delight Ventures that supports Japanese entrepreneurs launching AI startups in the Bay Area.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenges were you trying to address with Zypsy?

We hired Zypsy for branding and web design of DelightX. When we first started talking with Zypsy, we didn’t have a clearly defined scope of what needed to be done or how far we should take the project. We knew that the existing DelightX brand and website didn’t fully reflect the ambition of the program, but the problem itself was still somewhat loosely defined.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Our conversations with Zypsy helped us step back and clarify what DelightX should stand for, how we wanted founders, investors, mentors, and partners to perceive us, and where the brand needed to evolve. From there, they didn’t just execute against a brief. They helped shape the brief itself, proposing concrete ideas around brand strategy, identity, the website, and the broader visual system.
They handled everything for us, including the company’s brand system, logo, and website. Our objective ultimately became to build a brand that matched the ambition and credibility of DelightX and that could clearly communicate that DelightX is something serious, distinctive, and different from a typical startup program.

How did you come to work with Zypsy?

We knew the founder for several years through a friend’s introduction, and I had heard very good things about Zypsy for some time and had been curious about working with them.
What really made me decide to move forward was hearing about their “Omakase” approach. The idea of giving a highly capable team the freedom to think broadly, rather than defining every detail of the project upfront, felt very well suited to where we were with DelightX at the time. Once I understood how they approached the work, I felt it was something we should definitely try.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Having Zypsy help us define both the positioning and what we should actually do to express it was one of the most valuable parts of the engagement. We didn’t set a traditional growth KPI for this project since the main objective was to clarify and strengthen the DelightX brand. One of the clearest outcomes was how the language Zypsy helped us define started to become part of the way people actually talked about DelightX.
They proposed bringing the phrase “Build Global Companies from Day One” to the forefront of the website, and after the relaunch, we began hearing it come up naturally both within our own team and in conversations with applicants. That hadn’t really happened before the rebrand. To me, that was a strong sign that the work had gone beyond visual design.
Zypsy had helped us articulate the core idea of DelightX in a way that people could immediately understand, remember, and use themselves. It’s still a little early to draw a firm conclusion on application volume or partnership interest, but we’ve noticed a meaningful change in the quality of engagement.
Before the rebrand, we would often get questions from both prospective applicants and Bay Area investors along the lines of, “So you come to the Bay Area to learn, and then go back to Japan to start the company, right?” That wasn’t really what DelightX was about, but our positioning wasn’t clear enough.
Since the relaunch, we haven’t been hearing that kind of question in the same way. So while I’d be cautious about claiming a measurable increase in applications or inquiries this soon, it does feel like people are understanding the program more quickly and engaging with us around the right idea from the beginning.

How did Zypsy perform from a project management standpoint?

Zypsy’s project management was excellent, and everything moved forward smoothly and on schedule. We worked with them through their “Omakase” approach, so rather than defining every deliverable in detail upfront, we trusted their judgment and gave them room to explore.
That worked extremely well for us. At almost every regular meeting, they came back with something new that went beyond what we had expected, whether it was a new way of framing the brand, a design direction, or a concrete idea we hadn’t considered ourselves. There was a genuine sense of surprise and discovery throughout the process.
The process also required thoughtful input from our side. The questions they asked were often quite deep and forced us to think more carefully about what DelightX should stand for, who we were building it for, and how we wanted it to be perceived. So the project management wasn’t just about keeping the work on track. The process itself became a valuable opportunity for us to sharpen our own thinking about the brand.

What did you find most impressive about them?

What impressed me most was the people. Of course, they were experts at what they did, but what stood out even more was how thoughtful and professional they were as partners. Zypsy brought together remarkable people from different parts of the world, and we could really feel both the diversity of perspectives and the level of energy and passion they brought to the work.
Every conversation gave us new perspectives, and they were exceptionally good at drawing out what we were thinking and feeling, even when we hadn’t yet found the right words for it ourselves.
They listened carefully, took our reactions seriously, and made a real effort to understand the thinking behind them. At the same time, they were encouraging, warm, and genuinely enjoyable to work with while always maintaining a very high level of professionalism.
That combination of expertise, curiosity, thoughtfulness, professionalism, and genuine passion for the work felt quite unique. It created a level of trust where we could give them a lot of freedom, knowing that they would both challenge our thinking and stay very close to what mattered to us.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There is very little I would have changed about the project. If anything, one area we would like to improve going forward is how we convey the actual atmosphere of the Bay Area and the experience of being part of DelightX through video. We had some footage that captured that feeling well, but the quality of the source material was not quite at the same level as the rest of the site, so it was difficult to feature it as prominently as we might have liked.
In a way, the strength of the new site made us realize that we also need to raise the quality of the content we provide to match it. That is something we would like to work on from our side going forward, rather than something I would point to as a shortcoming of Zypsy’s work. Overall, we were extremely happy with both the process and the outcome.

We needed help building our branding and design system for our service.

Zypsy helped us with our whole branding, including our logo, the key message we sent to our users, and the styling (colors and typography) of our website. They also created a design system and developed our website.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Zypsy delivered a full package of brand guidelines, including our logo, color scheme, and styling. They also created a template for our design system on Figma and provided full support in building our service.Our customers liked the design of our website because it clearly explained what we offered as a service. Our iconic logo helped us build our brand, making the service more noticeable to our customers and improving overall user engagement.

How did Zypsy perform from a project management standpoint?

Zypsy’s project management was well established. We had a dedicated project manager who assisted us during the design session and other communications. Our primary form of communication was virtual meetings.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The most impressive thing about Zypsy was their dedication to our project. During the design session, they provided us with valuable insights we hadn’t even noticed and clarified what we should set as our key messages. They were a professional design firm that knew how to build a great product.

Internally, Zypsy’s brand and product design work has become the foundation used across our platform, website, sales, and marketing materials.
