I lead video production and narrative development for an AR tech company. I help oversee, produce, and write a lot of the content that agencies create for us.

What challenge were you trying to address with ZeroOne Digital?

We wanted to create a very cinematic-looking trailer for one of our projects, but we didn’t have the ability to do that in-house. ZeroOne Digital had the professional acumen to nurture the project from soup to nuts, so we decided to work with them.

What was the scope of their involvement?

ZeroOne Digital has been creating marketing and ancillary video content for some of our titles in the past. We’ve been working together ever since to come up with the best solutions. 

Their team has helped us with everything for this project, from creating schedules to getting insurance and permits. They’ve also brought in their video production gear for sound and lighting, and help in editing the videos in postproduction. 

How did you come to work with ZeroOne Digital?

We looked at a lot of different vendors but chose ZeroOne Digital for a number of reasons. They have the skillset and tools needed to do this project and their services are very affordable. Their team had also put together a really compelling pitch for how we could create some of the content we were looking to do. 

What is the status of this engagement?

One of the first shoots they did for us was in July 2019. I still work with ZeroOne Digital as projects come up.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

ZeroOne Digital’s work doesn’t necessarily need a lot of revisions, but they’re still extremely nimble and fast at making changes based on our company and our partners’ feedback. They understand our vision really well and hit it out of the park on the first go. We’ve also gotten positive comments from our viewers surrounding how great and professional the videos look.

We’re really happy working with them. They have a positive attitude and are able to provide insight and services that weren’t in the original statement of work. For example, we would ask them for raw footage after they’ve put all the clips together. ZeroOne Digital would just hand it to us on a hard drive, whereas other companies would refuse or even make us pay for that kind of access. It’s nice how easygoing they can be. 

How did ZeroOne Digital perform from a project management standpoint?

ZeroOne Digital has never missed a deadline, which has been fantastic. When we have a new project spring up, they guide it along, leading the stagecoach and making everybody feel safe and taken care of. 

They don’t rely on us as the middleman, but step up and take initiative to schedule, plan, secure permits, and even speak with location managers. Their team is eager to work additional hours, even without us asking, to make sure everything runs smoothly. 

They are also able to pivot very quickly through the pandemic, either creating videos remotely or making sure all protocols are maintained at all times, with COVID-19 consultants and rapid testers on-site. ZeroOne Digital had that level of professionalism and built those services into the package they were providing for us, whereas other companies either couldn’t do it or didn’t yet have the methodology set up.

What did you find most impressive about them?

One thing we really like about them is their proximity. We are all located in the same area which means they’re ready to roll even at the last minute. They’re very fast, reliable, and agile and their positive, can-do attitude makes them a joy to work with. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

ZeroOne Digital is incredible at video production and editing, but we could use more help along the lines of motion graphics and visual effects. While they’ve been able to do that for us, that’s not exactly what they were brought on to do, so it’s an aspect of the work that takes a little bit longer to navigate.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

The best thing for a new client is to be clear,  in their statement of work or RFP, about what they’re trying to do, what information they’re trying to get out there, and what they’re hoping to achieve. If they’re able to do that, then ZeroOne Digital will be able to really own the project and make it shine.

I’m the executive producer at a software company, producing all the content for our website, events, and social media accounts.

What challenge were you trying to address with Zero One Digital Media?

We create tons of different kinds of content with them, from six-second promotional videos for all our social platforms up to feature documentaries.

What was the scope of their involvement?

They’ve done a two-hour-long documentary, which was the first of its kind at my firm. It was about an artist who traveled from San Francisco to Arizona taking photographs. We spent 12 shoot days over the course of a few weeks and then did a full edit with Zero One and entered it into film festivals.

A lot of their work is customer stories or artist profiles, so they tend to require multiple interviews, b-roll shoots, and edits. These are normally 3–5 minutes long, and then we’ll make smaller videos out of them for social media.

What is the team composition?

I usually work with two people: Colin (Founder) and Clark (Head of Production). Sometimes I work directly with their editor as well, but Clark normally acts as my liaison.

How did you come to work with Zero One Digital Media?

I’ve worked with Zero One since before my time at my current job, from when I worked at a production company in Oakland. They might have already been a vendor at my previous company, and I brought them over when I joined my current comany. They’re now a trusted vendor and partner for my entire team.

How much have you invested with them?

We spend around $400,000 with them every year.

What is the status of this engagement?

We’ve been working together at my current company since July 2015.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They are a full agency, meaning you can go to them without a concept and they’ll help you from brainstorming and conception through to post-production and delivery. Additionally, they’re strong collaborators, so if you have an existing creative or idea, they can help you execute that. The only metric I have is that we continue to work with them. They’re a pleasure to work with, we enjoy working with them, and their work is very high quality. We’re always pushing boundaries and making beautiful work. They’re excellent storytellers at a reasonable price.

How did Zero One Digital Media perform from a project management standpoint?

I’m definitely more involved in the production side of things than I am with our vendors — in terms of coordination and access to our stakeholders. I’m normally in that liaison position, but they’re responsible for and meet their deadlines.

We communicate in all kinds of ways — email, phone calls, text messages — and as often as we need to be. Sometimes it’s every day or multiple times a day, and other times that are checkpoints we meet at according to our production schedule.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Colin is a great shooter and director; he has a beautiful aesthetic. Their work elevates corporate video to a cinematic level. The firm is excellent with storytelling, as well.

They’re really good at understanding what needs to be captured to tell the story, and then a lot of it gets worked out in the editing room. Everything starts with the shoot, and Colin is adamant about getting a lot of coverage. They get everything the editors need in production. Colin shoots for the editor.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I would advise them to continue working toward building relationships with animators. I typically don’t go to them for that, or graphic design work. They’re trying to solve for this right now.

Colin is very open to talking and collaborating, so I encourage anyone working with them to work closely with him. They’re capable of developing great ideas, but they’ll also respond to your vision very well.
