At the time of the project, I was an independent consultant working for American Express.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Waverly Software?

I worked with Waverly Software on a project in the 1990s. The objective was to bring American Express into a handheld platform by integrating their online travel services with mobile devices. We wanted to give users the ability to request flights online, scheduling them automatically seamlessly on their personal or business calendars.

I pitched them on developing a mobile travel solution that would be integrated with the Newton calendar and similar apps to demonstrate their work in the area. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

I don't know how many people were behind the project. I had a strategy, and Waverley Software owned the design, development, and testing. The process was got pretty sophisticated. We collaborated fairly regularly but can't remember if we were in contact with the project team or exclusively with a project lead. 

How did you come to work with Waverly Software?

I believe that Waverly Software was referred to me. I definitely hadn't known the company before the project. I'm pretty sure that there was a competitive bid in place. Matt Brown, their founder, and I immediately clicked. He went way beyond the pitches I got from other developers. 

What is the status of this engagement?

The project lasted about nine months.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or impact of the engagement?

Amex decided not to move forward with that project. (Newton was a bomb if anyone remembers; it was platform problem, not a solution issue.) But, the proof of concept got a great deal of attention and brought awareness to the groups involved, leading them to other projects. Where Waverley impressed me was their flexibility and responsiveness: they went with me to the Amex facility for UI testing. Once we found a problem in the workflow that we hadn’t anticipated, they had a fix ready to go for the next tester. I was very impressed since this saved us time and the client money.

How did Waverly Software perform from a project management standpoint?

We collaborated intensely on-site during the run of the project. Waverly Software came to our location in California. We visited the American Express facilities to present results or refine requirements.

What did you find most impressive about Waverly Software?

I had mainly collaborated with in-house people previously, having worked for Apple before this particular project. I’ve used quite a few of them since that engagement.

I classify development partners in two groups: the do-what-you-say ones, and the do-what-you-want ones. Waverly Software is definitely in the latter category. They can sit down and understand what we're trying to accomplish so that we don't have to specify anything. They came up with many good ideas around UI design, workflow, and everything else associated with the project.

Waverly Software had a willingness to dive into a brand-new area. This was a unique project at the time, which was why American Express wanted it. The platform was untried, and Waverly Software was working with a software-development kit that could be described as rough. We were breaking down some walls in trying to get it done, and Waverly Software pushed it all the way through.

Are there any areas Waverly Software could improve?

During user testing, we made an error in assumptions regarding how people would interpret an instruction. Waverly Software's team and I realized this at the same time, and they came up with a fix quickly. We wanted to continue with the test on the same day, with the same script, so we sabotaged the testing room, made the change, and went on from there.

Working with Waverly Software was a breeze. I don't recall ever getting frustrated, even with the error I mentioned. That was the fault of both parties, and it became extremely obvious when we saw it. It was a beautiful project, as far as I was concerned; it was simply for the wrong platform.

They really stood by their brand, they were very responsive to issues, they addressed them quickly and satisfactorily. That was impressive.

Nothing comes to mind. Especially since they were very attentive to what we needed and very supportive, nothing comes to mind.
