Barstool Sports is a media company geared toward millennial men. I’m the head of product, responsible for all our technology products.

What challenge were you trying to address with Very?

We are a relatively small but expanding company. Our web and mobile sites required a refresh. We were recreating and filling out our internal team, but we needed extra manpower to take that project and get it off the ground. We wanted a modern site built on a new infrastructure that would be more scalable as the site grew, getting us to a place where we could expand incrementally and test things going forward.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The website is built on React. We worked with Very to do some unconventional things around social sharing, including optimization of our ad products in making sure those worked well and kept with latest best practices and modernized methods. We also worked at getting users to view more page views per session. Integrating our recommendation engine and putting recommendations in the right spot was the main metric we were looking to drive with the refresh.

What is the team dynamic?

We had one frontend focused developer, one backend focused developer, and a project manager. Very’s team worked alongside our in-house development team.

How did you come to work with Very?

They were originally referred to us via a contact through one of our investors. We looked at two other companies. Very stood out by how they worked with teams, having a light, fast-moving, weekly sprint framework with a clear acceptance for the client to approve each story at the end of a sprint. We were comfortable that their process would line up with ours, with good communication face-to-face on a daily basis. It would be clear that when we accepted something, it’d be done and everybody would agree that it met the definition we all set forth.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in March 2017 until June 2017.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Everything they delivered met our expectation. Our main metric for the release was increasing page views per session. We boosted that on both the web and mobile separately by about 10%, which was our target. Our users are super engaged, so we’ve had tons of feedback, mostly positive. Negative feedback has been around ads being too intrusive, but that’s something we just expect. We actually made them a little more intrusive for strategic reasons. In terms of overall experience, it’s been very positive.

How did Very perform from a project management standpoint?

They were fantastic. It was always very clear where they were at. They had great communication and good transparency into their process. They used Pivotal, and it was very effective project management, with no surprises.

What did you find most impressive about them?

It was the way they became an extension of the team. It wasn’t like we handed things off to them. They were engaged developers who talked to our designer on an hourly basis. They became good thought partners in thinking about what the best ways were, the right long-term things to do, and being user centric in the way we are.

We are a business development and relationship management product. It's an online service platform. We enable our clients to leverage their relationships in order to get in touch with the people that they’re trying to do business with, or people who can help move their careers forward. We have a database of about six and a half million people. I am the chief product officer.

We have a fairly small development team and were looking for a way to accelerate some of our initiatives.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We recently launched a consumer product offering, and are working on communicating the value of our platform via a freemium site. Very helped us to create newsletter reports that were specific to particular client verticals, where a client who was interacting with the free version of the site could sign up for one and it would deliver them valuable insights that were specific to an industry. They used PHP and React.

We worked with a team of four people. One project advisor, a combination designer/frontend developer, and two developers who were working on the backend coding. They worked with us fulltime during the length of the project

The launch is still in beta for us. But, we’ve been very happy with what they’ve built and it’s been working. We only had to do a limited set of fixes on our side afterwards, despite the complexity of the finished product. We were happy with the outcome, but because we’re still in beta, we don’t have immediate feedback.

How did Very perform from a project management standpoint?

They did very well with that. They have a very agile methodology. We had daily stands ups and weekly planning meetings with them. We used pivotal tracker. It was always clear exactly where they were on a particular initiative. They would always reach out to us if they had any questions. They were very communicative in the sense that we never had any difficulty getting in touch with them. We’ve worked with a number of consultants and they’re definitely at the top in terms of communication and knowing exctly what is being done.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They made sure that the project was well prioritized and we were working on the right things at the right time. Their strategy of combining the front end developer with a designer was unique and pretty cool in terms of process efficiency.

Are there any areas they could improve?

The full team's understanding of the project's business goals could have bee nslightly better. To a certain extent this a challenge all consulting firms face, and Very was better than average here. But there was room for improvement.

We were looking to build a platform for a startup competition that we have for hardware businesses. We were starting from scratch, so we were looking for a software provider to help us think through, scope, and execute platform development.

Very helped us from start to finish on the competition platform, which included the visual identity and the CMS [Content Management System]. They helped us understand the kind of information we needed, how it needed to flow, and what the interaction between the applicants, judges, and different user profiles would look like.

They gave us advice and options in terms of cost and complexity. They tailored the platform to our needs as we worked through the process. In the end, we got an online platform that is fully customizable from our side. We like the look-and-feel of it, and it’s a comprehensive solution that’s tailored exactly for our needs.

They have a very rigorous process in how we engage with them, which is very helpful in terms of getting the results we need. The domain expertise and methodology has been very useful for us, and their experts understand our subject matter.

They used Ruby for the platform framework, and we’ve been through a number of phases with them. Working in sprints worked well because we were able to complete what was needed for the first year’s competition. We’ve also been able to improve the platform over time, so we’re happy with their process and flexibility.

In the beginning, we had some very strategic guidance from Very's senior management team, which included their CEO, COO, as well as some of their chief strategists and design resources. There were three people who were overseeing the project from start to finish.

The platform has been very robust for us. We’ve had zero issues over the last 3 years, including through every stage of what it’s looked like from a both judge or user perspective. The competition is an open call, so we do get usability questions from the applicants, but they’re always very simple and easy to handle. We’ve had very good feedback regarding usability, because it’s easy to interact with, as well as intuitive. The look-and-feel is appropriate to our constituency.

How did Very perform from a project management standpoint?
Very has been excellent, and we’ve never had an issue with deadlines. There’s always constant communication, and they’re fully transparent about the work they’re doing. We’re currently working on another platform that will be up in a couple months. We’ve always been happy with the delivery of their work.

The process and methodology they use have been very helpful for us. They offer full transparency, and the technology they use to enable that makes us feel like we’re a part of the team.

Custom develop our proprietary self-order kiosk software
Determine the hardware our software would run on.
Integrate the software and hardware into our restaurant credit card processing, kitchen software systems, and restaurant back office software.
