I’m the director of product management for Bloomreach, an e-commerce software company based in the Bay area. We have about 800 employees worldwide.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Vega?

We were looking for ways to make our product more self-service. We needed to speed up our roadmap effort and bring a fresh look to the user journey. Rather than just relying on our internal US team, we wanted to have somebody outside who could bring some new thinking to the mix.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We work with Vega on UI design and development for our product. They help us with UX/UI design and UX development and do all the work in Figma. On the development side, they’ve built code with React and Storybook for the foundation of UI components. In general, they’ve created solutions with our team and done a lot of user research. We have a long list of things we’re chipping away to make the product more self-service.

What is the team composition?

We work primarily with four people from their team. We have two UX designers, a senior frontend engineer who is the main point of contact, and a QA person.

How did you come to work with Vega?

They were a referral. One of my coworkers has known them for 10 years; they worked together in a previous company.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent about $300,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began our partnership in June 2021, and we’re currently working together. We’ve contracted them through the end of the year, and we’ll likely continue after that.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

It’s hard to rank their impact on metrics, but their understanding of our problem space and ability to produce UX design that pushes the envelope further have been completely satisfactory.  We really like their insight; they’ve asked great questions along the way. Since Vega has been onboarded, they’ve brought a new approach to UX design and how we build all of our new features. Now, we use their framework and standards, so they’ve helped drive some culture change within our company.

We’ve shipped the first feature they’ve built, and it’s been very useful and well-received by customers. Also, their enhancements have brought our onboarding time down by a couple of weeks. Moreover, their development team is 3–4 times faster than ours.

How did Vega perform from a project management standpoint?

Project management has been good — there’s a little room for improvement, but they’ve been really responsive. They’ve delivered well in general. We use Asana as a tool and Slack to connect with them. Once or twice a week, we get on Zoom to talk about upcoming meetings and projects.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They stand out for the seniority of their team, their speed, and the level of insight they have. They can pick up an entirely new industry and have enough context to create great UX. They’re highly skilled in their field. Also, their success is due to their tight-knit team; they’re super well-oiled.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Their team is growing, and as they’ve started to add more people, it has slightly slowed things down. We’ve talked to them about it, and they’re working on how they can keep their excellence and speed as they build their team.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be clear upfront about the specific projects you’d want them to take on and detail how their work fits your in-house team. Early on in our journey, it was a challenge because our team felt it was a sign that their work wasn’t enough. It took 1–2 quarters to have everyone see the results and recognize that it was significantly better.

I am the CEO of a law enforcement investigations technology company in Plano, TX.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire Vega?

We had been working on a system to provide automated crime-solving leads to investigators for roughly two years. The system was powerful, but too complex for users to extract maximum value. We hired Vega to break the system into its component parts, then based on our target use personas, reconstruct a user experience to allow users capture the maximum value of the automation. This was not about a pretty UI, this was about a UX that simply and obviously showed the right information at the right time to a relatively low-tech user.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

We searched Clutch for the best UX/Interaction designers in the country. We interviewed around 5 firms to lay out the problem and received proposals from several. All things being equal, it was the chemistry and enthusiasm about the project that tipped Vega ahead of the other world-class firms.

Describe the project in detail and walk through the stages of the project.

The team started with a short discovery. They interviewed our team members to understand desired outcomes, as well as different users to understand the personas for whom they were building. We even had them tag along to a training we were giving at a Police department to meet our users, see how we talked about the system, and hear their questions firsthand. They collected usage data from users of this new platform and our existing services.

Then, they broke down the data model to understand what data we had and what data was important. From here the team had several breakthrough or anchor ideas, such as the elimination of complex iconography in favor of conversational, natural language leads. These ideas helped us begin with the end in mind, and work backwards to get the user from a mountain of daunting data, to a simple, communicable lead to advance their case.

The team also recommended bringing our front-end technology into the modern era with the introduction of React. They helped our developers build the right environment and learn this new methodology, which we intend to carry forward to legacy parts of the system once this project is complete. Once we had landed on key visual, technological, and user concepts, the Vega team built out our views in Figma for our team to play with and critique.

We had weekly meetings with the Vega team to finalize design concepts and move components into React Development. Once we had a component developed in React, the Vega team would toss it over the wall for our devs to Wire up. Our team shared a Slack channel with the Vega developers to ensure understanding, ask questions, and resolve issues quickly. Ultimately, we have come up with a beautiful and simple design for users to navigate through mountains of complex, messy data, to find the lead to advance their case. We have elegant maps, robust analytics, strong visual context, powerful controls, and obvious conclusions for users to draw from their investigations. The Vega team pushed us well past where we would have ended up with our own marginal improvements.

How many resources from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?

We primarily worked with Josiah (Principal) and Chris (React developer). Intermittently throughout the project Jacob (Principal) would jump in on design sessions. On the back end, we understand there are additional resources developing and testing components as they are built.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

While we have not yet released it to users, we have shown previews to many law enforcement leaders as well as detectives and crime analysts (end users). They were blown away by the power, controllability, and quality of where we are headed with this system. Law enforcement is an incredibly underserved technology market, and we are thrilled to put this in their toolbelt to right wrongs in their communities.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Once we found our rhythm, a weekly status update plus a shared Slack channel between our devs and theirs was more than sufficient. Intermittent communications and feedback through Basecamp, quick calls, and emails kept the project moving.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

We were most appreciative of the Vega team's humility and desire for feedback on the impact of our product. It wasn't ever just about the technology for them. It was about advancing peace and justice through world-class technology. On top of the missional compatibility, the team pushed us to adopt best practices and worked us through implementation and change management. They didn't settle to get the job 'done'.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

We got off to a slower start than we would have liked. During ideation, the scope grew and the project wandered. This is partly the fault of our company. We were excited about the possibilities their skillsets unlocked and we ballooned the project. Vega could have done a better job with clear timelines, milestones and objectives to keep us on track to delivering the product on time. We are incredibly pleased with the output, but needed them to help us say "no" or "put that in a future release" more often.

What challenge were you trying to address with Vega?

We wanted to create a sales enablement platform for unique use cases. We wanted to give sellers different interactive tools within the environment to convey our value in different ways based on our audiences.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Vega developed a web-facing application that enables sellers to demonstrate processes to customers in face-to-face interactions. Their team built a dynamic platform that shows customers two views.

They created a pretty, flashy view for a higher-level audience. Their team also built a detailed view to show our services to more technical customers. They’ve built 5–6 other modules that cover a broad range of topics.

They’re also helping us with our customer-facing security portal. They’re creating the next version of the platform that provides all the investigations and alerts.

What is the team composition?

I typically work with Jacob (Principal), but we also interact extensively with different subject matter experts. We’ve worked with probably 4–5 people in total.

How did you come to work with Vega?

We needed a different way to help our sales reps convey our value. Vega has a cybersecurity background and many of them come from one of our partner organizations, so they had solid capabilities. I went through the vetting process with them.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve probably spent within the $150,000–$200,000 range.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in July 2018 and our engagement's ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

The fact that we expanded beyond the original demo modules is a testament to the success of our engagement. There's wide adoption by our sales force. We constantly get requests from sales reps for the next module Vega's creating. Ultimately, their efforts have led to sales and influenced sales that we might’ve not had or might’ve been delayed.

We use the tools ourselves and integrate them into our presentations. We pull customized business justification from the tools. I know of two deals in recent memory where the modules were an influential factor in us getting the budget authority signature.

How did Vega perform from a project management standpoint?

Vega operates on Basecamp, but I operate via e-mail and direct calls. They’re responsive and answer the phone. We never run into issues with not knowing their progress on a project. Their team gives updates and timeframes within which Vega can accomplish. I’ve put them under stringent timelines such as for our sales kickoff. They delivered on time and without errors.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I really like their attention to detail, which is big especially in the cybersecurity space. Our audience is detailed and skeptical in nature, so it’s extremely helpful that the Vega team has a cybersecurity background. They understand our audience and the apprehensions that we could run into. Their team thinks from that mindset and asks questions that we may not have had. That lens is incredibly valuable for us.  

Are there any areas they could improve?

When we want to accomplish multiple modules, I do have to sacrifice some of the functionalities I want due to higher quotes than what they should be given the scope of the work.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Understand your objectives and outcomes. Vega’s fantastic at taking your vision and applying it, but you have to have that vision as you approach them.

We're a full service Managed Detection & Response company, offering detection, investigation and response capabilities for cyber threats to customers. I am the Director of Product Management, responsible for our Insight customer Portal and CLOUD portfolio.

Our company is completely redeveloping our customer Portal and hired Vega for assistance with the visual design. We used Vega for both ideation and actual creation of the visual elements.

What were your goals for this project?

The focus on our new customer Portal is to provide easily understandable visual components that helps customers understand the following:

• State of the cyber security health
• Value of the services they subscribe to
• Understanding of the current threat landscape associated with their business

SOLUTION

How did you select Vega?

We've been working with Vega for a year or two on various projects. We had great success with Vega on our Sales Portal and decided that their expertise in design for technology focused organizations would be a perfect fit for our customer Portal.

Describe the project in detail.

We initially sent over our Product Requirements Document for Vega to obtain an understanding of the major functional parts of the new customer portal. We broke the portal up into about 15-20 widgets or design elements.

After prioritizing the widgets, we tackled each in a series of design meetings. The development of each widget began with a meeting to walk through the data types that would be feeding the widget and then a brainstorming exercise to decide at a high level the look and feel we wanted.

Vega would then develop rough wireframes which were shared and iterated on both in virtual meetings and online using Basecamp. After a design was agreed upon, the visual assets were delivered using Figma.

For some of the more complex widgets, our team started with a rough wireframe design, which helped communicate the message we wanted to convey with the widget. Vega would then take our wireframe and iterate on it.

In the end we had a complete visual design of our new customer Portal within Figma, which our development team then used for front end development.

What was the team composition?

On Vega's side we usually had three people engaged, working on various widgets. On the eSentire side, we had regular working sessions with Product Management, Technical Product Management and a Security Architect.

Due to the high priority and visibility of the new portal project within our company, we also had regular sync meetings with the working team and several C-level executives.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

We have not launched the new Portal yet, but we have demoed it to our Senior Leadership, Board of Directors, Customer Advisory Board and several current and prospective customers.

Everyone who sees the new Portal believes that it will be a game changer within our industry. Customers are impressed with the look and feel, as well as the ease of understanding information from each widget.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Vega was extremely easy and flexible to work with. We had a lot of scope changes in our release, which Vega was able to easily roll with. Vega truly felt like an extension of our own team and we felt very well supported by them.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Vega is very easy to work with and flexible. They truly felt like an extension of our own development team. I was very impressed by the passion they brought to the project. They really care about the work they deliver and go beyond to ensure they understand the intended outcome and experience for each widget of the website.

Are there any areas for improvement?

I was very happy with the work Vega did. The only area of improvement would be the overall organization of the project at the start.

I would say we were likely responsible for most of the disorganization at the start, but working with Vega we got Basecamp and the other tools appropriately set up to track progress for each design element.

For lack of a better term, we sell nerd toys, including statuary, high-end displays for studio partners, and a wide breadth of other products. I'm the general manager.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Vega?

A feature we offer to customers is a payment plan system. We had a WordPress website with a PayPal payment plan system to start, but it wasn’t conducive to our growth. We didn't have a way to get clean, usable order information, and it didn't fit us any longer. We moved to a WooCommerce platform, but that was also basic and didn't scale with us. We went from $2 million gross revenue to $6 million in 2017, and we decided we needed a Shopify platform. We liked how user-friendly Shopify is, but we needed a company to help us customize it to suit our needs. We don't have a dedicated IT person on staff, and we wanted someone who could code a solution.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

With their help, we set up a payment plan app that works with our Shopify Plus platform. Before this solution, payments would come in, but they wouldn’t group and were still split as separate payments. When customers checked their accounts, they wouldn't see how many payments they had made without counting them manually. Vega helped us port everything from our existing WooCommerce site to the new platform.

They custom coded an app that allowed Partial.ly and Shopify to speak with each other and improve usability and the UX. When our customer service staff is on the phone with a customer, they can see all the products the customer has on order in a bar scale. Because of that, we could customize our payment plans to fit the customers' needs and wants.

Vega set up product pages and templates that make getting in and making changes very easy. Now that everything is set up, they still answer our questions. Even though the job is done, they still respond to us and talk us through processes.

What is the team composition?

We had one main point of contact, plus a production lead and a tech lead.

How did you come to work with Vega?

Vega was recommended to us, and I'm so happy we found them. After a few failed attempts with other companies, we realized we needed to increase our budget. They weren't the first team we worked with, but they were the first to come up with a solution that allowed the big platforms in ecommerce to speak with each other. They took time to understand our frustrations by examining the problems in our current site. They never tried to sell us on proprietary software, and they were really focused on us. They made us much more comfortable than any other company we spoke to.

How much have you invested with them?

Our total bill was somewhere near $52,000. We hoped to spend less, but they were worth every penny. They allowed us to make a deposit and then work through a payment plan.

What is the status of this engagement?

In all, we worked for them for about nine months to get everything going, but the major build was between July and December 2018. We still speak with them unofficially about some of the shipping difficulties that are inherent in Shopify. We're hoping that Shopify will create new APIs to work with this kind of payment plan.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Our visibility is much better, and we're really happy with the result. Our business has increased so much, but I'm not sure how much of that can be attributed to their work. Our user experience has improved tenfold. Our customer service now answers more questions about our products and fewer questions about how many payments our users have left on their payment plans. Before Vega came up with this solution, 50% of inquiries were about payment plans or shipping costs. Now, customers ask questions we're much more passionate about like the designers of our products.

We go to several tradeshows and Comicons. In the past, if someone wanted to buy from us at tradeshows, we could only use PayPal. That came with a lot of fees and added expenses. Now, we have a Shopify Plus point of sale system that works on any of our devices. Our financial team has a much easier time with those kinds of transactions, and things move much faster. At the San Diego Comicon, we sold every single product we took to the show. There were no lines, no waiting, and the whole process was brilliant.

How did Vega perform from a project management standpoint?

They're one of the most incredible IT companies I've ever worked with. They presented information and allowed us to port over products piece by piece. They broke four years of data into manageable chunks, and they countered some of our ideas with two or three stronger options. They explained how to get the most out of the changes, and they taught us how to establish solutions for the long-term.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We felt like human beings in this partnership, and they clearly cared about our business. Put simply, they're very nice. They still check in with us, and they still offer to help us. They make us feel important, and we appreciate that they were a local business. Websites aren't always the most fun things to make, but our experience with Vega was really pleasant.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No. A lot of what we were doing was guesswork, but they truly built something brand new for us. That kind of process can be frustrating, but they made the whole project run smoothly. They were patient and willing to help us, and we all contributed to the team effort.

They're always going to stay on top of things, and they'll move at your pace. They're very patient and understanding, but for your own sake, don't make them wait on responses.

For what projects/services did your company hire Vega?

We have a number of issues around our data acquisition processes that have grown more serious over time. The issues have been worked around, but it was getting to the point that we needed a new solution to keep us moving forward. If we are to maintain our grow our position, we needed to have our data acquisition and storage processes modernized. To do this, we needed a full redesign and redevelopment of our data acquisition processes.

What were your goals for this project?

The solution has to reproduce and improve the functionality of the older system it will replace. We need the solution to be easily adaptable so we can both react to changes in data as well as bring in new data sources with the solution.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

They were one of many recommendations I received when reaching out to my contacts. After spending time with all the vendors, we decided that they were the easy choice to implement the redesigned solution.

Describe the project and the services they provided in detail.

They designed, developed, configured, and will set up the new data acquisition solution. We began the project with us providing them a full raw data set and an explanation of our needs and use models. A couple of weeks later, we decided to have a face-to-face meeting to finalize and clarify the details. The production process began shortly after, with well-defined sprints that kept us informed and involved throughout the process.

What was the team composition?

The team has about six people that will be involved in the project at various points based on skills required, with one project manager as our primary point of contact.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

The final solution is still in development, but we have already received early versions to work with. So far, we are thoroughly impressed with the solution and have no doubt that it will exceed our expectations.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

Project management is well-thought out, and there is regular communication throughout the process. We used Monday.com and emails to communicate and it meet our needs.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

They have a number of talented and creative individuals in both UI and UX design and they have come up with creative solutions to our problems that we didn't think possible. They seem to work well together and have a good process in all aspects of development.

As of yet, they are no areas that need improvement.

I’m the senior vice president of on-demand services at the second largest retail colocation data center in the world. We also have a unique specialty in cybersecurity portfolios, services, and software that we offer our clients.

What challenge were you trying to address with Vega?

The first project Vega worked on was cybersecurity data visualization. They’ve since worked on various internal projects that span different business units within our company.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Vega did a lot of UX/UI specific to network traffic visualization, but they also helped with the data visualization of other data center products and an analytics platform. In Amazon Web Services (AWS), Vega created a way to visualize the large dataset within VPC Flow Logs in a more human-friendly manner. They developed an interactive and intuitive data visualization process to identify best practices or areas of improvement. The original version of our product used a b3.js library, but Vega took that and evolved it into the existing visualization. They rewrote it in WebGL and used React-Redux for the frontend.

What is the team composition?

We worked with a project manager, designer, and about five coding resources.

How did you come to work with Vega?

They were initially engaged with the company that we acquired.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent between $200,000–$1 million.

What is the status of this engagement?

The partnership lasted from July 2016–February 2019.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We’ve closed a number of high-profile Fortune 100 deals due, in large part, to the product demos and unique visualizations that Vega created. They catch people’s eye and help them understand the value of our product. Potential clients connect with the visualizations.

How did Vega perform from a project management standpoint?

We communicated almost daily and had regular stand ups. We tracked tasks and had consistent communication throughout the engagement. They were like part of our internal team.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They had unique expertise with the WebGL platform, and they were always finding clever and creative ways to solve problems. They’re well-versed in complex data visualization and UX/UI.

I’m the co-founder of Sweet Spot, a vacation rental company. My co-founder and I are creating a platform that will connect rental owners directly with renters.

What challenge were you trying to address with Vega?

We want to make the rental process as simple as possible. My co-founder and I are not very tech-savvy, so we needed a digital design company to create the platform before we could move forward with our startup.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

My co-founder and I presented Vega with our idea, and they are building our MVP. They are integrating the product across all platforms, including mobile, tablet, and desktop. They’re working on the user experience, interface, and backend development. The team is creating a map feature that will enable users to find and look at a property and communicate with the owner.

What is the team composition?

We mostly work and communicate with Josiah, Charles, and Jacob (Principals, UI/UX, Vega). My team has also engaged with Luke (Principal, UI/UX, Vega). A developer is working on the project who we haven’t met.

The project began in December 2018 and is scheduled to finish at the end of May 2019.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We haven’t shared our MVP yet. However, we believe that the map feature will differentiate us from all of our competitors.

How did Vega perform from a project management standpoint?

Vega’s team is brilliant. They maintain an easygoing yet professional collaboration. Our teams work well together and communicate efficiently.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Vega’s ingenuity, experience, intelligence, and creativity have really impressed us. They quickly interpreted our core business concept and proposed some new ideas that truly exceeded our expectations. They’re skilled at getting the information they need and producing something even better than we imagined.

Also, the team is integrating the product across all platforms because many people in our industry are still using desktop apps. They have made sure we will be covered from all angles, which will be crucial for our business. Their approach has blown us away.

Are there any areas they could improve?

We’re very happy with them. The only negative is their location; we’re in Austin, and they’re in Dallas. Going forward, we will definitely refer them as much as possible because they’re a smart, talented team.

I’m the VP for products and technology at a data analytics and security company. We’re known for integrating UX and visualizations with data analytics.

What challenge were you trying to address with Vega?

We wanted to do some fairly sophisticated visualizations and data analytics for one of our products.  

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

One of our projects with Vega involved communications analysis—the ability to analyze human communications within the employees of an organization. Our challenge was to understand and visualize the internal workflow based on emails, chats, and social media interactions. Aside from high-quality visualizations, we also needed scalability. In some cases, we were dealing with hundreds of millions of records, so the communications themselves could be in the billions.

Vega understood the problems we were trying to solve and came up with requirements for data visualization. They not only helped us with UX design, but they took on the visualization development as well.

We’ve worked with a project manager, a UX designer, and two developers from their team. Their principal has also been involved in our work.   

How did you come to work with Vega?

One of our employees recommended them. We’re a React shop, and we chose Vega because they are one of the best when it comes to this technology.

We’ve spent around $1 million with them in the past two years.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Vega in May 2017, and the collaboration is ongoing. We don’t have an existing project with them now, but we use them on an as-needed basis. We have a pretty good relationship with them.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The impact of the visualization project has been significant. It’s hard to say what Vega’s direct financial impact has been since their work accounts for only a part of the visualizations on our product.

How did Vega perform from a project management standpoint?

The quality of work is nothing to complain about, but, from a project management perspective, there was more investment needed on my end than I’d have preferred. Vega was in a growth phase when we first engaged with them, so project management required a bit more work on our part. Fortunately, they’ve grown as an organization and hired more people over the last year. As a result, our most recent collaboration has been a lot better than the first time around.

What did you find most impressive about them?

From a UX point of view, they’re the best I’ve ever worked with in my 30-year career. I’m impressed with their understanding of workflows and how users want to interact with the product.

Are there any areas they could improve?

The project management piece could be improved. They should also maintain ongoing communication with the client. I gave them my feedback on the first one, and they seemed to take it to heart. I’ve definitely seen improvements in project management since the last time we engaged with them.
