The team primarily works on integration solutions for our existing website and builds new features for the website from scratch. This has included a calendar that allows teachers to see when their activities are due. They’ve also brainstormed on design solutions for us when requests come from our product team. The tech stack includes Node.js, React, PostgreSQL, and Redux.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We’ve been able to release a majority of the features that Uruit has built for us on time and with minimal bugs. 

How did Uruit perform from a project management standpoint?

Their communication is excellent, and we’ve never had an issue with it. They’re confident in expressing their opinions during design meetings and always bring something to the table. We primarily communicate via Google Meet, Slack, email, and phone calls; we’re an agile shop that uses Jira for project management. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

We appreciate their willingness to go beyond; when they don’t know how to do something, they always research it and come back to us with an answer or a solution. They’re also not afraid to work outside their comfort zone because they’re curious and will dig in. 

The team from Uruit is incredibly professional and quick to respond to everything. Everyone on their team has been very kind and transparent. We know they give us the best candidates they have, and we have yet to have an issue with them. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

There’s nothing we can come up with.

Tell them exactly what you need and build a relationship with them. The more you work with them and build that relationship, the better they’ll be able to help your company.

I’m the co-founder and CEO of Hyphaway, a SaaS company in the financial planning space.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Uruit?

Our goal was to develop a financial planning platform and get the product to market. We were aiming to get an MVP with four components. Firstly, we wanted data aggregation by connecting to an API and looking at optical character recognition. This feature would grab data for advisors to perform holistic financial planning. We had a roadmap for two APIs to bring in that information, capture it, and dump it into a database. 

We also wanted Uruit to work on the database and data architecture from an infrastructure standpoint. We wanted to ensure we could house data and use it to produce insights for financial advisors and their end clients. In addition, we were looking to build a calculation engine, a two-way communication platform, and a project management board for task management.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Uruit has built our platform’s prototype. Initially, we provided high-level wireframes and documentation from a UI/UX design standpoint. We also gave them documentation about the vision and what we wanted to achieve. We went through their design process, which included many exercises. After that, they started developing the product. 

They built a mobile app and a web app; the mobile app was aimed at the end client of a financial advisor, and the web app was for financial advisors to interact. They used Python and Flask for coding, AWS for hosting, MongoDB for the database, and Amazon Cognito for identification and user profiles. Additionally, the team used Datadog, a VPN to protect the structure, and React Native for the iOS and Android apps. They finished the iOS app. 

The Uruit team also delivered the infrastructure and built the ability for end clients to connect their accounts through an API that handles balances and transactional-level data. They also built the functionality that enables users to request scenarios and send them to their advisors. Users can also create a profile on the mobile app, which already has some planned features. 

The mobile app lets users see all their information and engage with an advisor directly. For example, if someone were looking to buy a new home, they would go into the app and enter basic information to send to their advisors, who could run scenario testing on the information they received. That testing is based on the calculation engine and other features modeled from the data aggregation coming from the APIs.

What is the team composition?

We worked with Cesar (Head of Growth & Partnerships), who brought us in, and we had one main point of contact outside the team. In our direct team, we had Juan Pablo (Product Manager), Julian (Architect & TL for Web & Mobile), Andrea (Senior Software Developer Team Lead), a DevOps teammate, Jason (UI/UX Designer), and Felipe (UI/UX Designer & Senior Graphic Designer).

How did you come to work with Uruit?

We found them through a referral from someone in our network who worked with Uruit. When we were looking at competitors, our decision came down to the quality of service and their capabilities relative to price. We looked at onshore, nearshore, and offshore companies; we weren’t comfortable with our ability to manage teams offshore. 

As for nearshore options, we liked the opportunity because they were in the same time zone and had full capabilities to help us and outsource potential work on the development and project management side. The cost differential was huge when we compared nearshore to onshore companies that provided similar services. Based on our vetting, the person the referral came from, and their work experience, we became comfortable moving forward with Uruit. 

How much have you invested with them?

We spent $250,000–$300,000. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We worried together from July–November 2022. Although we were getting close to the MVP, we didn’t hit our funding as anticipated and had to pause the project.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We felt really good about Uruit's development; the team did strong work. On the backend, we had a strategic advisor who evaluated the information, data models, infrastructure, and architecture design. Their communication and our ability to see what was happening while going through different demos were great. Although their design was good, it lacked user flows and defining real use cases; we rushed it and should have done more work on that end. As a result, we've decided to bring the design back in-house and not outsource it going forward. 

We had to stall the project due to funding, so we could only get to a prototype instead of the MVP we were aiming for. We're looking to come back with them once we secure more funding. Overall, we were satisfied with their development work, so we want to return to Uruit. When re-engaging them, we would like to work differently, using them more on the development side instead of the UI/UX design side. 

How did Uruit perform from a project management standpoint?

Their project management was great; they responded on time and always got us the information we asked for. Juan Pablo was my contact for the direct team, and we talked almost daily through Slack. 

We went through some hurdles regarding communication and expectations. Although it took about a month and a half to get to know each other and get in the groove, once we delivered our feedback, they took it well and made changes. Our critique was about open communication, and we saw immediate changes, so Uruit's response was fantastic. There was never a time when I felt like I couldn't ask questions or be heard. They taught us a lot and vice versa, which made it a positive experience. Overall, we had a very open relationship.  

What did you find most impressive about them?

Uruit's strength came down to their development work; their team was very strong. They also did a really nice job of understanding our vision, which was a big deal. I got to know the team well and enjoyed working with them. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

The area where they needed to improve was in the UI/UX design work, though not in the quality of their work; they designed really nice-looking screens. However, the design wasn't very detailed from a user flow and use cases standpoint. Their work wasn't clear on how the flows interacted. They could have defined the use cases more to flesh out what we were trying to get at. 

Additionally, sometimes the communication between different teams within Uruit might have been challenging from an observance standpoint. If the project had progressed, that communication would have improved through different means. If we started over, we would approach the relationship differently to enhance their strengths and combine them with ours. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

As a company ideology, when we hire people, we trust them while constantly verifying what's going on and having an open communication stream. However, the Uruit team doesn't always have that experience, and they've been treated differently by offshore clients. Sometimes clients can get on a high horse and think they're better, which is counterproductive. Therefore, treating them well is important; you can get more from a team working this way. 

Uruit is confident and knows what they're doing. If you trust them, value their opinion, and collaborate openly, they'll ask how they can do better and more for you. As long as you're open to a feedback exchange, you can get a lot out of the team; they respect that approach, making them want to work harder. They'll do a lot for you if they feel heard and respected and like you're in it together.

Please describe your company and your position there.

I'm the founder and CEO of a B2B SaaS company to help GTM teams build repeatable go-to-market plays built for enterprise growth.

For what projects/services did your company hire , and what were your goals?

We are launching a software product in a new category that requires a visual builder tool for building go-to-market plays. Our goal was to launch Builder in a private beta this year so users can start building in the platform and providing feedback.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

I met the founder of the parent company who reviewed our software development requirements and referred me into the team lead at Uruit, Cesar Costa.

Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.

The statement of work included: Product Discovery, Design and Development for building the first MVP version of the Builder Product. This was a time and materials SOW with monthly milestones. We used GitLab to manage the epics, issues and roadmap deliverables. The team developed the platform using React, NodeJS and MongoDB.

Can you share any measurable project outcomes or general feedback about the deliverables?

The project team from Uruit worked on a time and materials basis to deliver the MVP Builder module with a long list of requirements.  We limited the project to a max amount of hours to be spent and billed.

Describe their project management style, including communication tools and timeliness.

With his team's help, the project manager divided the software deliverables into epics and issues tracked in the GitLab ticketing system. The system outlined the epics, issues, and milestones. The milestone deliverables were packaged into online review/demo sessions for feedback and iteration. The process was collaborative and efficient at keeping everyone on the same page and delivering on time and within budget.

The project manager kept everything updated and communicated with our team in Slack and Google Meet.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

The team worked well together and communicated well with our team. They worked hard to deliver as many requirements as possible in the allotted time, and the project deliverable had a successful outcome. We are pleased with the result.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

The team was so focused on delivering requirements that they sometimes didn't leave enough time for testing and debugging. I would encourage building more time for unit and user acceptance testing.

I’m the CEO of Up Beet Brands, and we have two consumer-facing companies and websites: Forks over Knives and The Beet. Both sites focus on plant-based nutrition and provide education, training, and commerce products.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Uruit provides us with custom software development. They continuously improve the functionality of our leading product, which is a meal planner. The software gives subscribers custom plant-based meal plans every week. Users subscribe to the product, and we tailor their meal plans for breakfast, lunch, and dinner based on their nutritional requirements. Uruit has taken an existing code base and optimized it, and they currently maintain it and build new features and functionalities for it.

We’ve worked with approximately 10 teammates from Uruit, from project management to front- and backend development to creative services.

They were hired before I joined the company.

The team is incredibly punctual and responsive. They’re industry-leading in terms of communication and timeliness of delivery. We use Slack, phone calls, and Zoom to communicate with them. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

Uruit’s level of professionalism, service, and care distinguishes them from other providers. They feel like part of our organization because they take great pride in and ownership of the project.

To work with any third-party development firm, I’d advise you to make sure that your goals, expectations, and deliverables are clearly outlined.

I’m the senior director of engineering for an information services company.

What challenge were you trying to address with UruIT?

They’ve had an opportunity to participate in both frontend engineering and backend architecture and system engineering roles.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

 The first project we worked on with them was focused on frontend UI. We were working in React and they helped us replace a legacy frontend with a modernized version. That project was challenging because we didn’t know what we wanted and it wasn’t customer-driven. They really helped us think about the process of developing customer-centric software, which helped us improve our processes.

Their role has changed since we brought them on. They serve several teams and we’ve asked them to embrace new sets of technologies, learn it, and get up to speed. They’ve done some internal training for our team.

What is the team composition?

We had two teams of three developers each.

How did you come to work with UruIT?

I wasn’t part of the hiring process, but I’m familiar with our general hiring process. We look for vendors that are relatively close to our time zone. That seems to help us collaborate across teams. We look for people that feel invested in what they’re building. They want to own the process and be accountable for the outcomes.

What is the status of this engagement?

I was brought in around January 2019 and we're still working with them.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We’ve been very pleased with how it has worked out. Overall, they’ve been very helpful, especially through their team trainings. I appreciate that they look grow the impact on our business by looking for ways we can improve. We plan to explore their other offering to see how multifaceted they are.

How did UruIT perform from a project management standpoint?

They were willing to work within the existing tools we established already. We’ve adopted a more complete planning process, which means the team is in more meetings to facilitate discussion and clarify outcomes. This was a very positive change.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re very powerful allies and are positive about changes you propose if you explain why you want to implement them. They would definitely provide critical feedback if we proposed a change that wouldn’t help us achieve our objectives.

I meet with them pretty regularly and we have real conversations about what we’re trying to achieve. They don’t just agree to what I want, but instead, act as a true partner.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Not really. Overall, we’re pleased with their work.

My company is Xvoucher. We work in the training and certification space, assisting companies with distribution and fulfillment of training and certification artifacts, as well as financial and tax operations with regard to delivering exam certifications and training globally.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with UruIT?

We were looking for the ability to scale development resources. We also wanted high-quality development resources that could basically be self-starting. We needed them to be experienced in the Microsoft .NET technology platform.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

UruIT provides software development services in a number of different areas: application development, testing, architecture, and DevOps. Xvoucher is currently experiencing exponential growth, so we rely on UruIT to provide software development assets on a dynamic basis. Over the past 6–7 years, we’ve had a core group of 4–5 resources, and we recently expanded that to eight. We’ll continue to expand that based on our growth.

Along with the Microsoft .NET technologies, they provide React resources. We’re moving our UI slowly but steadily to the React platform, which is JavaScript-based. They not only provide development resources in a couple of different stacks, but they’re now beginning to provide us with QA resources as well. We’re looking to them for testing resources in order to build out our QA platform and resources.

What is the team composition?

We’re currently working with eight resources, and we’re looking to add another 2–3 before the end of the year.

How did you come to work with UruIT?

It came down to cost. If you nearshore or go to companies that are within the US, they tend to be more expensive. Sometimes, that's warranted, but in our case, we're working with Microsoft, a commodity technology stack. There wasn't really any reason for us to pay a high hourly rate. UruIT provides us with lower-cost services. They’re not the cheapest, but they’re around the middle. You can go to other countries in different parts of the world and get cheaper resources, but then you get what you pay for.

We were looking for an area of the world that had invested in technology services and was willing to educate its population, and that was Uruguay. I have some personal connections to Uruguay, so we were familiar with the government's approach to educating and making technology one of the services that they outsource. They outsource a couple of different things, mostly in agriculture, and this was an area that they decided that they should invest in. Since we had a relationship with UruIT, we decided we would embrace and grow that relationship. They were cost-effective, provided skilled resources, and were skilled in the technology stack that we were predominately using for application development. Those three items have really led us to continue to grow that relationship.

How much have you invested with them?

On a monthly basis, we’re investing around $50,000. We expect that amount to grow slowly over the next 12–24 months.

What is the status of this engagement?

In 2016, I started as VP of technology and product development at my company, and they’d had a relationship with UruIT for at least two years prior to that.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The impact has definitely been positive in a number of different ways, and not just the fact that they’ve written and deployed code against requirements and feature sets. They are very dynamic, which means that they adjust on the fly. They’re a very flexible group of developers and resources, and that fits our culture. We have development and QA processes in place, but because of our explosive growth, those processes have been put to the test, and it really helps that UruIT is so dynamic and flexible.

They’ve also been very flexible in how we onboard resources, and the types of resources we’re able to get are usually high quality. Then, I think the third area where there has been a positive impact is from a business standpoint. The business partnership is very solid. When we run into exceptions where we need to negotiate, the negotiations have been very honest and forthcoming, and there’s always a positive result. In general, we get high output and quality resources, and the business partnership is very solid.

How did UruIT perform from a project management standpoint?

I believe they use the same tools that we do, which is the Atlassian suite, namely Jira. Their project management and work ethic are very strong and seem to work well with our own methodology. When we need people to work harder or more hours, they’re on board with that. Obviously, you don’t want that to happen all the time on either side, but when there is a need to have resources work additional hours to meet a deadline, they are absolutely willing to do that. Their project management methodology seems to work well with our own, as we haven’t had any issues in that area whatsoever. It’s working very well for us.

What did you find most impressive about them?

In general, I think it’s that they’re responsive. Every time we have a need, whether it’s an addition to an existing need or we come up with a new one, we talk to them about it, and they’re willing to help find out how they can fill that need. Most of the time, they can; when they occasionally can’t, they give us options where we might be able to fill the need.

Both the resources that do the work and the business partnership are very high quality. They’re willing to work with us, both when the work is at a high volume or when there’s a need that is outside of their core skillset. We greatly appreciate that effort.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I think that in this case, because we’re experiencing such high growth, we’re the ones possibly causing roadblocks. It’s usually us that is the issue, and we have to resolve those issues internally. UruIT is rarely the issue; in fact, since we have decided to make an investment in the partnership, there hasn’t been a time where they have been a blocker in any project. The process that they use internally from a business and partnership standpoint is working very well. We haven’t had any issues with them at all with regard to projects, deliverables, or skillsets.

We hired them to work on our digital products, specifically our mobile app.

What was the scope of their involvement?

The team improved the app, redesigned it, and made it more robust. The app was originally developed with Xamarin, so UruIT continued with that same technology. 

What is the team composition?

We work with at least six teammates.

How did you come to work with UruIT?

We evaluated different service providers when this project came up and we really liked UruIT’s work dynamics and solidity. We felt very close to them from the start.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent between $100,000–$200,000 so far.

We started working with them in August 2019, and our collaboration is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The results and the quality of the product have been good. We’ve had a great collaboration with strong work dynamics. As for results, we are starting to see a positive impact.

How did UruIT perform from a project management standpoint?

We communicate with UruIT daily and we also have weekly follow-up meetings. Because of this, the project’s execution and follow up have been very efficient. Additionally, the team is very strong in agile methodologies.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their greatest strength has been their attitude when faced with challenges — they always move forward and along with the client. They have also been great at understanding the vision and goals of the company, showing a complete willingness to collaborate in every way.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There are always areas to improve, however, at the moment I have no suggestions.

I’m the VP of product delivery at a company that focuses on healthcare IT. We work with hospitals.

What challenge were you trying to address with UruIT?

We were moving to more modern technologies, Angular and Node.js specifically, and we needed some expertise in those areas.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

UruIT has supported our transition from a Sencha platform to an Angular deck. The team does code reviews and mentors our teams on the new technologies. They’ve also helped us take a new product to market.

What is the team composition?

For this project, we currently work with six team members. We’ve had a few roll on and off, so probably a total of 10 over the last year. 

How did you come to work with UruIT?

I’d actually worked with them before for a previous company. The CTO there was the one that connected me with them, and I’m not sure how he found them. However, I’d been really pleased with their work, and so now we’re using them here at my new company. If we need a senior developer, I go to UriIT.

How much have you invested with them?

The cost is well into six digits.

What is the status of this engagement?

Our work together began in June 2019, and it’s ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The quality of UriIT’s work is outstanding. We actually have some of our UriIT people doing code reviews now for our own full-time employees because they are so good. We also have a few of them serving as mentors on some of the teams as we transition to these newer technologies that some of our full-time employees aren’t familiar with. They’ve been really great as far as mentoring goes; for instance, just yesterday, one of the UriIT architects held a company-wide lunch-and-learn to train all of our developers on a new technology. In my opinion, that’s going over and above what you’d expect of a typical contractor.

How did UruIT perform from a project management standpoint?

We’re agile, so we use Jira, and they do too. They’re involved in estimating our work, and their estimations are always very accurate. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

The thing I’ve noticed about every individual I’ve worked with from UriIT is their positive attitude; they’re happy to help, and they deliver quality work. They were also instrumental in a product launch and meeting deadlines so that we could get that product out and begin making money.

Are there any areas they could improve?

From development and architectural standpoints, they’re second to none. We’ve only used one UX person there, and that hasn’t panned out too well, so we’re switching to another UX person. We’ll see how it goes, but UX just might not be their niche.

We’re a healthcare service provider. We offer several service lines including case management. I’m the director of application engineering.

What challenge were you trying to address with UruIT?

We needed to supplement teams that were already in place, so we weren’t just bringing them in for a particular project. They supplemented our team with senior developers.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We’re primarily a .NET shop, and we do a fair amount of Angular. They’re doing frontend development with Angular, C#, and .NET backend. We were looking for full-stack developers with multiple skills. We want all our developers, full-time employees or contractors to be full-stack so we can use them as needed.

What is the team composition?

We started with a couple of developers to test it out. Now, we’re up to eight developers on three different projects. We were satisfied with the two developers’ work and decided to grow the relationship.

How did you come to work with UruIT?

We knew we wanted some offshore help. Primarily, there were a lot of advantages to that, including cost. We were also interested in working with someone close to our time zone. They ended up being an hour off, so they fit nicely. They’re able to join our daily standups and have become a part of our team.

I initially found them on Google by looking for companies in South America, since I heard they had strong development capabilities there. I started talking to the President of UruIT and liked their philosophy and process of employee vetting. It’s very stringent.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent between $300,00–$400,000 this year.

What is the status of this engagement?

We’ve been working together since February 2019.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

All I can say is this: they’ve done well on the tasks they’ve been assigned. They’ve been as good as the rest of our team and fulfilled all of our requests. I’m not sure what else to say.

They’re absolutely contributing members of the team, and we’ve been happy with them. Both from a technological standpoint and an attitude standpoint. They’re eager to work. It’s been a seamless transition.

How did UruIT perform from a project management standpoint?

They haven’t really done too much in the project management realm. We have project and development managers on staff; their role has really been development only. Their communication has been fine though. I don’t see that as a barrier.

We’re heavily into Slack, and for a code repository, we use Azure DevOps. We’re an agile shop, and they’re familiar with all of that. We’ve had them be part of our on-site PI planning sessions as well. They travel and physically meet the rest of the team for those sessions.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The work hard on their tasks and exercise critical thinking, which is important as a developer. They don’t blindly go down a path because they’ve been told to. They examine a task and find the best solution, as well as offer alternatives if the suggested solution doesn’t seem as good.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, not that I’ve seen.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Engage them and have them meet your team. If possible, do so in-person, but use video conferencing if not. Making them a part of the daily standup helps promote accountability within the team, which is critical. Don’t keep them off to the side or have them work independently.

What challenge were you trying to address with UruIT?

We’re an early-stage startup, so our in-house development team is challenged in meeting demand because of its small size. We are building an enterprise platform with extremely limited resources. UruIT came in to pinch-hit during a critical moment in our company's progress.

What was the scope of their involvement?

UruIT provided development services for our company, both frontend and backend. They helped build the prototype data visualization dashboards and in-app notification system.

How did you come to work with UruIT?

We wanted a cost-effective solution. Someone local would have been best, but given cost constraints, we were looking at outsourced solutions close to our same time zone. We didn’t want to be talking to someone in the Ukraine or India, where the time zone difference is pretty large.

We were looking for developers that really knew the technology well and could integrate with our development team effectively. We scoured the Internet for reviews on outsourced development shops within the Americas, and UruIT seemed to have consistently high ratings.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from March–July 2018.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They really helped us out in a pinch and got us to the product that we needed to effectively demonstrate functionality. It wasn't a long-term solution, but we weren't looking for a long-term solution. They got us from point A to B. While we didn’t end up using their code in the long run, the important thing was getting a proof of concept up and running to show some key product functionality.

How did UruIT perform from a project management standpoint?

They’re pretty good at managing themselves. The challenge with any outsourced development situation is making sure that the company who is using the resource has the right way of assigning the work and making sure that is agreed upon prior to going into every sprint. You’re only going to get as good as you put in. When the company thinks about how they want to use developers and what they're going to work on and there's a clear and concise communication path, that’s the best way to go forward.

I thought that UruIT was flexible, reasonable, and open in their communication. They pushed back when they thought our requests were unreasonable, so I found the dialogue pretty good.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their developers are top-notch. They’re experienced, they know what they're doing, and they're really easy to work with.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can't really think of anything.
