We have engaged Flatirons to redesign our UX/UI. They have conducted a discovery call to understand what we were looking to design, why we were looking to design it, and who we were designing it for. From there, we have met weekly to walk through our requirements. Flatirons has addressed what has been discussed and provided us with an updated design. We have had the option of walking through the new designs as part of those meetings, making suggestions, and continuing to iterate.

They have used Figma exclusively. The design element is done, and we’re contemplating using them for the actual development of the tool.

We have two primary points of contact: a designer and Sandra, the project manager. The owners of the company are available as needed but do not join the weekly calls.

The president of our organization had worked with them in a prior engagement. From a former role, she knew Flatirons and their work. We chose them because they conveyed at the outset that they’d done this before. They showed strong examples that gave us the confidence they could do this. Flatirons has ensured that all of our requirements have been captured as part of the design and incorporated our feedback appropriately. They’ve been able to complete everything within 4-5 months. From start to finish, the team has demonstrated a strong engagement with the project, enabled the client to collaborate with the same people, and showcased a clear understanding of their business, needs, and goals.

How did Flatirons perform from a project management standpoint?

They’ve handled project management on their side. The project manager has been fantastic and ensures we’re hitting deadlines, keeping pace with the agreed-upon timelines, and adhering to the budget. We’ve communicated with Flatirons through Google Meet.
Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?

Sandra and the designer are both outstanding and of a truly high caliber.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We’ve been impressed with the engagement and commitment to the work product. Our requirements and what we’re looking to do aren’t the easiest things to pick up if they haven’t had exposure to them. Flatirons has been able to understand the use case and design something that makes an impact.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I don’t think so. We’ve had issues with Google Meet, but that’s a very minor thing. Honestly, I only have positive things to say.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

They should set forth clear requirements and expectations to let Flatirons know what they need from them in order to feel successful. They should also ensure everything is well-defined and can be tracked. Lastly, I recommend making the upfront investment to fully understand the use case and the impact they’re trying to make.

Ultimately I felt that Flatirons understood my business best. I didn't have to explain to them a lot of the domain concepts as they seemed well-versed in the topic and that mattered to me.

After I signed with Flatirons we put together a go-to-market strategy for the tool I was building and we formed a roadmap around that. They used React.js, Node.js, Heroku, PostgreSQL, and some open-source tooling to build my platform.

As a result, we’ve increased our monthly investment with Flatirons and planned for more budget increases as we embark on a new product line in 2023.

We experienced a challenge in our business that required us to manage cashflow more tightly, while also onboarding a new development/engineering team. Flatirons demonstrated impressive professionalism and faith in our partnership by allowing us some flexibility on payment terms, as well as remarkably smooth transition to new tech personnel. We’re delighted with Flatirons’ development and processes. Our users have given mixed reviews for the app, but their complaints are not because of Flatirons’ work — it’s mostly about our product decisions and the app’s lack of features at this stage. These are things that we plan to fix with Flatirons as we continue working together. 

Across our team, we all appreciate and value working with Flatirons and want to continue the relationship. For us, they are the best choice we have for augmenting our team and building a product. 

How did Flatirons Development perform from a project management standpoint?

We communicate daily with them through Slack, and 2–3 times a week, we have group calls through Zoom. In addition, all our engineers have daily stand-up meetings, and outside of that, we have larger meetings twice a week with their designers and CEO. There’s a lot of communication and feedback that’s given and shared.  

What did you find most impressive about them?

Flatirons’ design and product development processes are very encouraging and impressive. Most people are impressed with how our product looks like. Flatirons’ mockups and prototypes always exceed our expectations. 

Michael holds his team accountable, and they all have a great attitude. In addition, they meet our expectations about deadlines and work quality. The success of their team is a testament to Michael’s leadership. Their engineers are also responsible and have a sense of pride in their work. I’m pretty happy with our partnership with Flatirons so far. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

We recommend that they come to our meetings with an agenda aligned with our company’s progress. We meet about twice a week and follow a product roadmap. As a result, everyone’s default is to just come to the meeting and wait for me to ask questions and poke around. 

It’ll be more helpful if Flatirons can drive those meetings and move the conversation about how to be more efficient and effective as a product team. I understand that’s not fully their job, but I want to feel that our teams are aligned and moving in the right direction.

To maximize your engagement with Flatirons, you need to have a clear idea of what you’re trying to build or accomplish as early as possible. They’re good enough to help mold loosely formed product ideas into something actionable and deliverable. 

The clearer you are on what you’re trying to build, the better Flatirons can be at directing you and creating the product. Have your own clearly defined road map and discuss that with their team. 

Engage with Flatirons on an ongoing basis, so there are no doubts, uncertainties, or miscommunication about the next steps. Once the engagement starts, you still have to remain highly involved and responsive so that Flatirons never has to guess what to do next.

I worked with an offshore company before coming to Flatirons, and felt that work was consistently overpromised and underdelivered. Working with Flatirons has been night and day compared to my previous experience. Flatirons took over my project and organized it into clear timelines that they stuck to. I honestly felt that my project was doomed and now I feel it is in a good spot. I paid the cost of trying to save money upfront.

I chose Flatirons because they are very transparent with their team and process, and they seem to have a lot of experience in the SaaS space. They put forth the best proposal and were able to talk to the pain points that I had with my previous development team.
