I’m the development lead for My 1st Years, an e-commerce business that specializes in personalized, made-to-order gifts for children.

What challenge were you trying to address with Q-Solutions Studio?

We had just completed work with a U.K.-based agency. Our core product runs on a PHP Magento framework and we needed experienced developers familiar with that platform to augment our in-house team.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

I was unhappy with the quality provided by the previous agency, so as a trial task, I asked Q-Solutions to analyze our underlying code and identify areas for improvement. Satisfied with their results, we decided to move forward.

They now augment our internal team, assisting with maintenance and ongoing website development projects. They’ll also help with a project in the near future, enhancing our website to become a progressive web application.

What is the team composition?

They typically provide clients with an entire project management suite, but because we already have the infrastructure in place, we primarily work directly with their developers. We always maintain one full-time developer, but we scale up as needed and have worked with as many as three.

Sebastian (Magento Developer, Q-Solutions Studio) has worked with us throughout our engagement. He’s our go-to guy and he’s phenomenal.

How did you come to work with Q-Solutions Studio?

We found Q-Solutions through an online search. They specialized in PHP and Magento, which was crucial, and their quality of work was fantastic. We reached out to them, knowing it would be easier to hire a competent agency than to find a new in-house employee.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in September 2015 and our relationship is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We’ve been very pleased with their technical abilities. They’ve tackled every challenge we’ve presented over the last few years, even ones unrelated to Magento.

How did Q-Solutions Studio perform from a project management standpoint?

Their owner makes time for us no matter how busy he is. Their developers have integrated with our team fantastically and they’re excellent communicators, even making themselves available after working hours.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I typically communicate with their developers, but because they’ve become such an integral part of our team, I can trust them to accomplish any task without having to hold their hand through the process. Everyone gets along wonderfully, so I don’t have to constantly worry about the team’s progress. I’ve been able to enjoy holidays without stressing about the office.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Because they’re a small agency with limited manpower, it’s important to give plenty of notice if you need to scale up. We keep this in mind, so it’s never been an issue for us.

We are a mid-level e-commerce supplement company based in Atlanta, Georgia. We sell a couple of products, including one for the immune system. I am the webmaster/e-commerce manager. I’ve worked hand-in-hand with Q Solutions.

What challenge were you trying to address with Q Solutions?

We had two existing websites—one of them on Magento 1.7, and the other using the Ecwid WordPress plugin. We needed to combine those into a multistore site while also upgrading to the latest version of Drupal at the time. Revamping to a responsive theme was also a challenge.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Most of our business was done through the Magento site, while the WordPress one was a smaller sister site. In terms of actual website features, we were using AJAX Cart for the checkout process. We have a one-page checkout, rather than the native Magento accordion style, and are currently using GoMage Light Checkout.

The 1.9 version of Magento was our first tackle at having responsive functionalities natively. We were ahead of the curve, relative to our industry.

We had one main point of contact. We used Redmine for project management and had a few different people responding to tasks. I and another person from the company worked on the project from our side.

How did you come to work with Q Solutions?

I attended the Imagine Magento conference, actively looking for a solution partner or at least someone to help us with this change. I had also done some work with Jakub at a previous company and knew that he had good responsiveness and a highly coated, full-stack scope. We eased into the relationship, instead of going on a whim.

Q Solutions is based outside of the US, but they actually stand within the local pricing ballpark. With other solution partners here, we were paying more for billable hours rather than delivered goods.

What is the status of this engagement?

The site went live around October of 2015, after a 7-month development run. The timeline isn’t really reflective of the scope. Both of our companies had small teams at the time. I also worked with another solution partner in 2016, and we got 2 tasks done after spending 5 to 10 times what we would have spent for Q Solutions.

How did Q Solutions perform from a project management standpoint?

We have a pixel-perfect QA process internally, which probably dragged the project out. We don’t want to launch anything unless we’re certain that customers will like it. There wasn’t a lot left to go wrong after the launch, but we maintained ample communication with Q Solutions. Besides the Redmine tool, they were available on Skype; if there was a code-red, I could be on a call with Jakub within 30 minutes and fix it on-the-fly. When Q Solutions’ attention is pointed towards us, the work gets done. I worked with another solution partner in 2016 and found that there were too many cooks in the kitchen, by comparison.

They also had other clients, and there is a time difference between us and Q Solutions, so we did have some constraints. I would rate them a 8.5/10 overall.

What did you find most impressive about Q Solutions?

Not only was the team good at what they do, but they’re also active in the European Magento community. It’s always nice to see that the people we’re working with are also held in high regard by others and are contributors to stack exchange. Q Solutions helps the whole community.

Are there any areas Q Solutions could improve?

In the beginning, there was some miscommunication from time to time over what we agreed on with Jakub and what we could see from other people in his team. This was due to people trying to contribute their knowledge. There were some suggestions which we adapted to, and I don’t think it’s a bad point generally.

The time difference was the biggest issue for me. We’re 6 or 7 hours apart, and it can be hard to have someone’s end of day be the middle of our day.
