I worked for a materials and life sciences company until 2015. Until my last couple of years, I was responsible for bio-based products and services. I was also in charge of leading negotiations with a US-based group to build a large-scale advanced cellulosic ethanol plant in Iowa.

I left that company in 2015 and started a project called BIOFOREVER with 13 other European companies. The goal of that project was to demonstrate several routes, from sustainable biomass like forestry residues to various chemical building blocks.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Pix Videos?

We wanted to make a video clip that could translate the project to the broad public. We also wanted to reach out to policymakers, governments, and potential investors interested in capital-intensive projects. There was quite some resistance from the general public against using biomass or biochemicals as fuels.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We gave Pix Videos a proposal of what we wanted to bring across, and they came back with a first script. We had a few back and forths, and Pablo (CEO) gathered relevant pictures of biomass, biorefineries, biofuels, and biomaterials. They produced the first version, and we worked on it until we had something we were okay with.

What is the team composition?

I was only in contact with Pablo. He shared my input with the team.

How did you come to work with Pix Videos?

I was attracted by some videos they’d made for other parties receiving subsidies through the European Horizon 2020 program. We were looking for a company that could translate a difficult message in an acceptable way for the broad public.

How much have you invested with them?

The total cost was €2,000 (approximately $2,000 USD).

What is the status of this engagement?

We contacted Pix Videos in November 2019, and we worked together between December 2019–February 2020.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The video was distributed to all the companies that participated in the consortium so they’d use it with their audiences. It was also posted on Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social platforms, but we didn’t measure its impact.

The consortium members were quite enthusiastic about the video, especially with how the message came across. We also showed it to friends and family who hadn’t been introduced to the area of biobased products, and they really understood what the video was trying to bring across.

How did Pix Videos perform from a project management standpoint?

We were pretty satisfied. The project took longer than necessary because Pix Videos had to go to each of the 14 companies in the consortium and ask for feedback. However, they can produce videos for individual companies within 2–4 weeks.

I communicated with Pablo through email and phone. On another side, another company was responsible for budgeting these communication activities, and they needed an invoice before the end of 2019. We raised the question, and Pix Videos send an invoice within a couple of days.

What did you find most impressive about them?

First, they were able to get into a topic that wasn’t familiar to them. Second, they were fast in producing the video, and finally, they were quite competitive in terms of pricing.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They produced a lot of videos for Horizon 2020 projects using only graphics. It would be a good idea to use live clips.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

Think over what message you want to bring forward and how you would build the script that goes with that message. When I started working with Pix Videos, I thought I could just tell them what I wanted, but I noticed that it wasn’t a familiar topic for them. They needed more information about the background, the message we wanted to bring across, the public opinion about it, and how we could overcome resistance.

Within a month of putting the video on LinkedIn, we’ve received several positive comments. On top of that, we saw an increase in people wanting to work with us on projects.

They set clear timelines, and they stick to the budget we set. We communicate via Zoom, Skype, and email. They’ve also created a shared folder for our documents.

I like the way they approach the project. We’ve also been impressed that they’ve been able to integrate the ideas we wanted to see. Above all, they’ve happily accommodated all the changes we’ve requested.

Communication was initiated with Pix Videos CEO, Mr. Pablo Hortal who described the process step by step, explained what is required to start the production, provided continues feedback throughout the production and readily participated in brainstorming meetings (in Zoom).

We worked with the company CEO, Mr. Pablo Hortal. The project started with us providing a comprehensive description of the NeuroCompSkill project. Then, following feedback form Pix Videos the content was shortened and adjusted to serve as a basis for the video clip.

Each step forward in the video clip preparation was communicated to us, discussed and modified in accordance with scientific suggestions from our end and professional guidance from the Pix Videos end. Working together was very interesting, educational, professional and pleasant.

Prof. Ahissar was very pleased with the result. The video clip was uploaded to youtube and several scientific platforms and is being utilized as an explanatory tool.

I’m an associate professor at Tampere University in Finland. We run a youth-funded project.

What challenge were you trying to address with Pix Videos?

We were looking to have some explainer videos done to address what we’re doing on a specific project and its possible impact on people’s lives. It was a service that needed to be visually explained so that people could grasp it in a short amount of time.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Pix Videos created an animated video, handling the entire process. First, we had an initial discussion to give them an understanding of what the content should be. After we shared some information, they then moved forward with the animation.

The purpose of the video was to introduce our project. Specifically, we wanted to share what we are doing and how we use our funds. Additionally, we wanted to allow everyone to briefly understand what was going on behind the scenes in this project and what we aim to do as we grow. The video has since been published on YouTube.

I had direct contact with two people, but I know there were others involved in the voiceovers.

How did you come to work with Pix Videos?

I received an email from them. At the time, I was looking for a vendor, and so I checked out their YouTube channel. Their portfolio was really impressive, and I thought they’d be an excellent fit for me. When I saw their portfolio, I found several great examples that showed me that they could understand and explain even the high-tech projects. We later spoke over the phone.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from March–May 2021.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

I asked for feedback from my team, and they all loved the video — it explained the story really well within a short amount of time. The visual graphics were also lovely. Even my family, who weren’t familiar with the topic, seemed to like the idea. The video explains the entire concept nicely, and the quality of the video and the illustrations were really high.

How did Pix Videos perform from a project management standpoint?

They were excellent in this regard. The team was professional in managing the whole process to not be too time-consuming for me. Overall, the timeframe was quite fast, and the Pix Videos team came up with something great in a few weeks. We usually send them emails and set up quick Zoom meetings for sharing feedback. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

The topics covered in the animation are technology and natural science-related, which aren’t very easy to explain visually. However, they did a great job of understanding our concepts and translating them into animation.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Maybe they could help a little more with the script and story writing process.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be as detailed as you can with them at the first meeting and use terms that are easy to comprehend if the subject is very technical. Try to explain the best possible outcome for you, and Pix Videos will be good going forward.

We’re an international research team specializing in creating bionic prostheses mainly for the upper limbs. We have three research centers in Europe. Our Austria center deals with the medical component of prosthesis creation, while the UK team takes care of the engineering component. The robotic component is done by the Italy team. I’m a graphic artist, and I do all the graphic materials and communication with our teams.

We needed to produce an animated video.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Pix Videos created a short animated video for us that basically explained all the complex concepts that we were working on at the time. The short animated video presented our approach to meeting a set of very complex challenges to audiences who weren’t familiar with our work, serving as a brief introduction. We could also put it on our website so site visitors could get a quick overview of our work.

What is the team composition?

I mainly worked with Pablo (CEO), and 1–2 animators worked on the actual video. 

How did you come to work with Pix Videos?

We were contacted by one of their team leaders as part of their advertising strategy. They gave us their website and told us to contact them if we needed anything. Our team thought that it would be interesting to look into this further. Then, we shopped around and checked out other animation companies that could produce an animated video for us. 

Ultimately, we went for Pix Videos because of their price and value, which were better than plenty of other companies. 

How much have you invested with them?

We spent around €5,000 (approximately $6,000 USD). 

What is the status of this engagement?

The project lasted from April 2020–March 2021. Upon completion, we were presented with a longer and slightly shorter version of the animated video (at no additional cost!) and were very satisfied with the results.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

The impact was difficult to measure because the goal was to capture the attention of audiences during presentations. However, the feedback we received had been positive; everybody said that the video nicely captured the essence of what our team was doing. 

How did Pix Videos perform from a project management standpoint?

Pix Video's communication and project management skills were excellent. In fact, they were extremely good in terms of communication. Their team was on the ball, so to speak. We communicated partly via email, and we conducted online meetings when we had a large volume of things to discuss. 

Overall, the cooperation between our teams was great and unproblematic. They took all of our comments on board. We were happy with their work, and it was clear from the get-go what we were getting from them. For our group, this was quite a learning experience.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Compared to other providers, the price and value they offered were their main strengths. With other animators, the cost was difficult to define beforehand, and the scope tended to grow over time. We had to manage things carefully so that they wouldn’t go overboard. 

On the flipside, Pix Videos provided set prices for certain projects. They set a price-per-minute measure, which was fantastic because it allowed us to budget well. Essentially, the only factor we had to bear in mind was the length of the final video. As a result, it was easy for our team to navigate through the process and see where we needed to manage the storyline to fit our budget. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, there weren’t any. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Research what you want to have. Try to find good examples of other videos that are similar to what you need. This way, you can point to specific things to let Pix Videos know what you want. Providing concrete points is helpful in communicating your ideas. 

On top of that, Pix Videos is great at explaining their processes and guiding you through them. As a result, the clearer you can communicate your ideas and needs with them, the more likely you’ll get the results you want.

SBS was established on 25th October 2013 as an international non-profit association. SBS’ objectives are derived from Regulation (EU) No 1025/2012 which sets out a long-term vision for the European Standardisation System.

The focus of this regulation is on improvements that will ensure better support for European policies fostering growth and competitiveness. SBS is one of the four “Annex III” organisations mandated by the European Commission to represent SMEs in the context of standardisation. I am in charge of press, communication activities and events.

I’m a dissemination officer at a research center. I work on communication for European products. Our organization is an institution in Barcelona with over 700 employees; we work on various projects that require supercomputing resources.

What challenge were you trying to address with Pix Videos?

We needed to create a video for one of our projects.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We created a draft script with the idea for what we wanted to show, which was the software architecture of this particular project and how it’ll impact smart city infrastructures, quality of life of citizens, air quality in the cities, and so on. We gave all this information to Pix Videos, and they came up with the graphs. After we approved those, they came up with the animation, which had voiceover and subtitles.

The end result was a two-minute video that we then uploaded and disseminated through our YouTube channel, project website, and social media. We launched the press release as well, so we shared the link to the video on other channels that have to do with smart city infrastructure.

What is the team composition?

We were in touch with Pablo (CEO), but he might have been working on the video with some colleagues as well. We also worked with the voiceover professional that was involved.

How did you come to work with Pix Videos?

My colleagues had worked with Pablo before, so we knew that Pix Videos was quite efficient. We were satisfied with their work, so we got in touch with them to create this animated video.

We began working with them in February 2021, and we wrapped up the video in May 2021.

We were very satisfied in general; the cooperation was quite smooth.

In the end, the first version of the animated video came out very quickly. There were a few updates and revisions needed from our side, but they very willing to work on them and improve the video to present the result exactly as we wanted. We were very happy, and we’ll use their services again for sure, especially for animated videos.

How did Pix Videos perform from a project management standpoint?

On their side, Pix Videos was perfect in terms of deadlines and meeting the results on time. We were the ones who were sometimes a little late to respond due to our large workload. They organized a few online meetings to talk about the script and the idea behind the video, and I think Pablo got it quickly because he’s a researcher himself.

We had meetings through Skype or some other online meeting tool, like Zoom. They used Google Drive, and we had a shared folder to log in and check all the materials — budget, invoices, scripts, and illustrations. All the files were in there, so we all had access to them.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Pix Videos was very efficient and delivered on time, but what I liked the most was that Pablo really got the idea that we wanted to put out with the video. Thanks to his background in computer science, it didn’t take a lot of effort for our researcher to explain the project to him. It was very helpful because the project involved supercomputing and was very complex, so not everyone is familiar with that.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I can’t think of anything. We were very satisfied.

If you’re going for a video, prepare some kind of draft script with the idea you want to show. It would be helpful for Pix Videos to know what they’ll be working on from the beginning.

I’m the chief scientist at one of the largest independent research organizations in Scandinavia.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with PHENYX?

We wanted to present our activities in the form of videos, either through animation or live images.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We had an open discussion about our goals in the beginning, and we gave PHENYX examples of what we wanted the videos to look like. We gave them a PowerPoint presentation on the topic, as well as a draft script. We also gave them models of the car and the city landscape. PHENYX came back to us with a short script that summarized their understanding of what we wanted to implement. We reviewed the script and sent it back to them, and they started work on its implementation. 

They provided all the equipment, software, and voice generation. They also managed all the editing and integration work. We had several iterations, where we commented or asked for changes on different scenes, images, text, and more. We matched the colors and messaging with those in our projects.

In total, we’ve worked on two videos with them, including one that’s focused on autonomous vehicles. The first video covers vehicle-to-infrastructure and vehicle-to-vehicle communication. The second video features AI digitizing the industry, and it focuses on the use of Edge processing and IoT for implementing performant intelligent solutions in the manufacturing sector.

What is the team composition?

We worked with several people in the beginning, but we only directly communicated with one person. Currently, we’re working with 2–3 people across different phases.

How did you come to work with PHENYX?

I was in contact with another person on a different project, and they recommended PHENYX. It took me around a year to make the decision. After our first discussion, PHENYX got in touch with me every three months or so, asking if my project was progressing and if we’d made a decision on the video.

Our project started in January 2020, and we have an ongoing engagement with them.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

I appreciate that PHENYX is open to our ideas, and they’re flexible in changing different elements within our partnership. That includes changing the video or script based on our inputs. On top of that, their response time is quite good, and the quality of their videos is great compared to other companies we’ve worked with. We’ve also received positive feedback from our external partners. As a result, we plan to start another project with them.

How did PHENYX perform from a project management standpoint?

PHENYX uses their own tools, and they have a good basis for providing visual representations. We communicate by phone and email, and we use Google Drive and Google Docs to exchange documents, videos, presentations, and scripts.

The team has a structured project management process, and they have clear plans on what needs to be accomplished. That includes creating descriptions of the project’s milestones. Overall, everything’s in line between the plan and the implementation. They’ve also utilized the same budget we agreed on in the beginning, despite us asking for more corrections than expected.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their responsiveness has been impressive.

It’s difficult to say what they can improve because they’re responsive to our needs and they implement improvements in real-time based on our feedback.

Clearly communicate your ideas and engage PHENYX in a dialogue from the beginning. Additionally, give the team ownership of the project. That way they can give you feedback from the standpoint of your external users.

The video consist of an animated cartoon explaining some of the research activities and achievements of the project. The production process was very clearly explained by Pix-Videos since its beg

inning, and duly followed and updated during its completion. The process included different interactions between myself and Pix-videos and clearly defined stages of production. The process was very smooth.
