I’m the Co-Founder and CTO of the largest redistributor of surplus medicine in the USA. Powered by technology, our company helps organisations like nursing homes, pharmacies and manufacturers to donate their unused medicine and get it to where it’s needed most.

In order to truly leverage our data for decision making we needed to develop our first Data Warehouse where we could consolidate data from all our sources in one place. This was a necessary step in order to become a data-driven company. We needed an experienced vendor to advise us on the best possible solution considering all tradeoffs.

**SOLUTION**
How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

Their team came highly recommended. We felt comfortable working with a company with their positive track record.

Describe the project in detail and walk through the stages of the project.

The vendor began by taking the time to understand our current context, this included talking about our infrastructures, current pain points, needs, and data sources, teams, and processes. This was all part of what they called the Discovery Phase. After that, we moved on to the setup of different technical and communication tools. Finally development itself began, followed by the implementation and deployment of the solution. In regards to the solution itself: the implementation consisted of implementing Airbyte to consume data from MySQL, Quickbook, and other sources. DBT for transformations, Airflow for orchestration and Quicksight for dashboard capabilities.

How many resources from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?

We generally worked together with a team of six experts who were specifically assigned to our project. Our main contacts were the team's dedicated tech lead and one of the vendor's co-founders.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Integrated dashboards

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

From day one, working with the vendor was easy going. They made a visible effort to keep in sync and all relevant people were always in the loop. The use of weekly meetings, task tracking systems and a clear roadmap made the workflow run smoothly. Their team was always readily available.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

I appreciated their extensive experience building cloud and data infrastructures as well as full stack machine learning systems. Not only did this allow for a robust tailored solution but also for a cost-effective one.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

We’ve been working together with the Mutt Data team for several years, suggestions are usually applied so there are not really improvements to be made at the moment.

With a milestone based plan and roadmap we moved on to KickOff where all the necessary tools and communication channels were set up. The solution consisted of creating a platform over which our company could rank advertisers, decide on the cost of advertising spaces and filter bad quality ads in order to sustain organic GMV on the platform. The project was separated into a series of phases each one with its purpose, milestones and results. We first started by a research phase which allowed the vendor to get an understanding of the problem that we were trying to solve and then designed, together with our team, a first solution to start implementing. The final solution consisted of a Machine Learning based strategy which allowed us to tailor, in real time, an Ad Waterfall for each user in order to maximize revenue. As a complement of the solution, the team also created an MLOps platform setup to enable rapid iteration, tracking, deployment and testing of Machine Leraning model variants.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Mutt Data built a machine-learning model that helped predict demand for restaurant delivery orders. The model also predicted the necessary staffing capacity so we’d know how many drivers we’d need to onboard. 

During the discovery phase, we provided the project scope and shared our data structure and business problems for Mutt Data’s understanding. We did some exploratory research together and they uncovered insights we hadn’t been previously aware of. In the next phase, we onboarded them onto our technology stack and set them up to have their software interact with our stack. They used a set of open-source machine-learning and data engineering resources, including Airflow and MLflow. We also provided them with some Amazon resources.

We hosted the model but they helped maintain it by upgrading it and fixing bugs.

By the end of the project there was a 10x increase in data pipeline processing and data asset deliveries. Communication was fluid and frequent, we mostly communicated over video chat but also made heavy use of selected tools such as: Asana, Slack, Google Workspace, and Github. The team was open to questions, and quick to answer. Milestones and timeframes were accomplished.

The vendor began by taking the time to understand our current context, this included talking about our infrastructures, current pain points, needs, and data sources, teams, and processes. This was all part of what they called the Discovery Phase. After that, we moved on to the setup of different technical and communication tools. Finally development itself began, followed by the implementation and deployment of the solution. In regards to the solution itself: the implementation consisted of implementing Airbyte to consume data from MySQL, Quickbook, and other sources. DBT for transformations, Airflow for orchestration and Quicksight for dashboard capabilities.

### Etermax: AdTech for Gaming
Etermax acquired a DSP to contribute to its direct branding and in-game advertising campaigns for brands within its games and the more than 2200 titles it represents. After testing it, Etermax determined that their DSP needed a performance improvement that could generate orders of magnitude of gains, against the most established mobile demand-side platforms.We developed a new Machine Learning model-based bidding logic for their Demand Side Platform (DSP) with models that more accurately predicted Win Rate, Click-Through Rate, Cost, and Conversion Rate, for each auction. We also developed a new performance-based budget pacing mechanism. The following tools were used for the project: Vowpal Wabbit, Airflow, MLFlow, and Amazon Athena. After just four months of work, with no modifications to the previously used budge, Etermax's system showed a 40% decrease in cost per clicks (CPCs)


### Sirum: Mastering Computer Vision for Healthcare
Sirum processes between 2000 and 60.000 donation cards a day, and as operations continue to scale, manual classification became an unsustainable solution. Drug cards need to be classified considering different variables such as type, expiration date, and the number of pills per blister. Sirum needed to improve its operation's efficiencies, switching a manual process with an automated, computer vision-based object recognition solution. A mission-critical Application Programming Interface (API) was implemented to be used by the conveyor belt that processes the medical cards. The API has a deep learning object detection model designed for pill counting which extracts the necessary information from the labels such as preparation date and type of medication. Their primary goal is to establish a publisher-centric approach in an industry predominantly focused on advertisers. 
Challenge
X3M’s mediator encompasses a key aspect of their services: optimizing waterfalls. This presents a unique challenge as publishers possess less data compared to advertisers and must navigate multiple advertising platforms with varying behaviors, all while contending with the ever-shifting landscape of buying mechanisms.
Essentially, it becomes a strategic game where one party aims for higher CPMs while the other strives for impressions at lower CPMs. Consequently, X3M must continuously fine-tune their logic to gain a competitive advantage, considering the intricate understanding of each network’s behavior and developing a scalable solution that accommodates diverse demographics and game scenarios.
Solution
Development of innovative real-time waterfall optimization algorithm driven by AI. By utilizing predictive models for fill rate and latency, the task force created real-time waterfalls that optimized revenue potential for each advertising opportunity.
To validate our logic, an offline system simulator for any waterfall policy was developed. This tool proved instrumental in assessing the impact of upcoming changes and became an integral part of the daily toolkit for data scientists, AI specialists, and machine learning engineers working on waterfalls. Through these simulations, X3M efficiently iterated on new machine learning models, business rules, heuristic adjustments, and other design decisions.
We elevated the AB testing process by automating analyses, conducting significance testing, and establishing key performance indicators (KPIs).

Challenge
Implementing a company-wide data platform that would enable facilitated self-service data access to all necessary teams while removing the data-engineering team as a technical and bureaucratic bottleneck.
The end goal was the implementation of a solid Modern Data Stack with flexible, scalable, and reliable tools that would empower data engineers and business teams to support company goals and value generation.
Solution
Implemented a Modern Data Platform, its tooling, pipelines, components, and integrations that could serve the whole company. The project applied best practices in different components of their data pipelines such as data ingestion, transformation, visualization, governance, observability, and infrastructure as code.
The project included:

Setting up Databricks as the place to host the company data lake with delta tables to use as a single source of truth.
Implementing a modern data lake house architecture with layers to separate different quality and granularities of data.

### Ank Reduces Manual Reconciliation to Under 3%
About
Ank is an Argentine fintech that developed a product for money transfers between banks and virtual accounts. It allows you to manage several accounts from different banks from a single app and facilitates quick transfers between them.
Challenge
Ank’s team needed to fulfill three main objectives within the scope of this project. Create an automated flow of reconciliation transactions to reduce manual work while improving the accuracy and trustworthiness of the process. Second, increase the frequency of the reconciliation process to obtain updated data. Finally, implement a batch data processing architecture based on best practices and technologies that could serve as a model for future pipelines. Together these needs could be solved by the implementation of a Modern Data Stack.
Solution
Mutt Data developed a system for automatic reconciliation on an hourly, daily, and weekly basis. The system extracts the information from the different sources, centralizes it in a Data Lake in Amazon Web Services, performs the relevant reconciliation checks and, if it detects inconsistencies, corrects them automatically or creates tickets for cases that require manual attention.

The system is developed on an Airflow 2.0 installation on Amazon EKS and uses Amazon Athena, DBT, Great Expectations and PostgreSQL. Other tools include Kubernetes, K33, Google Auth for Airflow Login, and Alembic.
Impact
The client saw manual conciliation processes reduced to under 3% of their total monetary transactions.


### Success With ML Demand Forecasting in Logistics
Challenge
Habitat was using a set of complex business rules to manually estimate the demand forecast by hour and assign the proper amount of delivery persons. They had hired an external Data Science consultant who applied Machine Learning to computing the forecast and showed improved results but had no expertise with turning that into an actual system on the AWS Cloud that would automatically run in an hourly manner.
Solution
We deployed a team of 5 High-Performance In-House Data Experts to plan, organize, and develop all the necessary AI and data capabilities Habitat needed to solve their challenge effectively and in record time. The goal? Robust systems and capabilities, built to last and scale with Habitat’s business.
We implemented a system that applied demand prediction algorithms to calculate hourly demand forecasts for each delivery area in each city. This system runs continually every hour and adjusted predictions accordingly for the next 7 days. To accurately calculate this demand, data is pulled, integrated and validated from several external data sources such as weather forecasts, special events, etc.
Using these hourly demand forecasts and input, we built an optimization system to adjust delivery person’s shift allocation to minimize costs while maintaining SLA’s.
Finally, we implemented a real-time prediction system to estimate the time it would take to prepare a particular order. This allowed the dispatch system to minimize waiting times in the restaurant for the order to be ready.
Data and ML pipelines and models were implemented combining the use of Apache Airflow for process development, Python for application development and ML Flow for metric and model tracking. 
Impact
40% cost reduction in their deliveries.
