What challenge were you trying to address with Motion Story?

We wanted to explain the value proposition of our products through motion graphics.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We gave Motion Story a brief to articulate the different areas we wanted to show. The team then came back to us with an interpretation of our brief. They created storyboards so that we could get an idea of the look and feel of what they were going to do. The storyboarding process also served as a confirmation if we were on the same page. During that process, they conducted interviews with us as well as with the professor that was collaborating with us.

After that, they began coloring some of the illustrations before proceeding to the copywriting process. We had all the copywriting validated through one of our regulatory compliance partners to make sure we weren’t making any claims. Once we were able to comply with all of the requirements of the Department of Health and Ageing (TGA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the team started creating all the motion graphics, frames, and images. They were in charge of the voiceover, too. Overall, they spearheaded the whole video production process.

We worked with three people, including Daniel (Creative Director) and a copywriter. Daniel was supported by several graphic designers and illustrators.

I found them on Googe and reached out to 2–3 other companies. However, only Daniel reached out to us. I also chose them because they were organized and responsive.

We worked together from October 2020–June 2021.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We were able to post the brand motion graphics on our website. We just gave them an idea of what we wanted, and they finished the whole project while seeking our approval on deliverables throughout the project. They made sure that we were happy with what they were doing, and they delivered according to expectations. Overall, we’d like to work with them again.

How did Motion Story perform from a project management standpoint?

Motion Story was organized, attentive, and easy to work with. They were really nice, and they had strong communication skills. We communicated through email, video calls, and phone calls. We started pre-Christmas time so that probably slowed our project down. However, we didn’t have a very tight timeline so we were happy to get the deliverable once it was available.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They really thought about how they could best help us on our project. Daniel in particular was very critical of the quality of their work and his hard work was shown through their team’s outputs.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No. We had no complaints about their work. They were better than other companies.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Spend some time to articulate a good brief and make sure that you’re very clear with your project's scope. Don't be like other customers who tend to just football the job onto companies and don't give enough direction to their vendor. If you’re clear with what you want, they can achieve your vision.

Please describe your company and your position there.

I'm the Head of Marketing for a software-as-a-service company. We've created a platform to extract structured data from any document. This enables new frontiers in business process automation.

For what projects/services did your company hire Motion Story, and what were your goals?

Our platform is quite technical and uses artificial intelligence. That's why we reached out to Motionstory to create an explainer animation for our website, social media and live events.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

I looked at different creative studios on Behance and was impressed by the creative work by Motionstory and others. I then contacted a few of them and Motionstory was the most convincing because of (1) their creativity and (2) the process that allowed us to plan with a pre-defined budget and professional approach.

Describe the video(s) and the process in detail, including the project steps and all stages of production.

The process followed exactly their description on the website. We provided a draft script and they took this as a starting point. From here they developed a compelling story, mood board, style frames and a concept storyboard. Once we agreed on everything they went on to create the voiceover, animation and sound design.

Who did you work with and what was the feedback process like?

We worked a lot with Daniel and others from his team. Important we were based in Switzerland and Motionstory in Australia. I was really impressed with how smooth we could develop and realise this project with them over Zoom. To me, this was one of the best creative co-creation ever.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

We use the animation across all our social channels, the website and on live events. As of today, we have on YouTube alone over 40'000 views on the animation and it helped us grow our brand perception and reputation across all our markets.

Everything was well documented and we had almost real-time access to all elements (storyboard, mood board, animations). We used Zoom, and MS Teams to communicate, Google docs and boords.com

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

In the end, it's the result and positive impact of the video. But then it's also the processes and the fast our feedback has been implemented. It felt like Motionstory was part of our team, even though we were both sitting at the other end of the globe.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

No really.

James Finnimore: Infoview is a technology expense management company that finds ways for companies to save time, money and effort on their business technology

Mary is the CEO and I’m the Sales and Marketing Assistant. My responsibilities include maintaining and updating Infoview’s brand presence, and creating both internal and external marketing collateral. 

Mary Finnimore: We identify billing errors and dispute them, but we also assist enterprise and government organizations by helping them pay their bills or redistributing their costs across different cost centres within the businesses.

What challenge were you trying to address with Motion Story?

MF: Our business is complex, and it can be difficult for people to understand exactly what we do. Motion Story created two videos that explained every aspect of our business in clear terms.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

MF: First, they sat down with me, James, and other members of our team. During that consultation, Motionstory distilled exactly what we wanted from the project and begun to brainstorm ways that we could demonstrate exactly what we do for our clients every day. We decided to create a 60-second and 90-second video for two slightly different purposes.

JF: At the start of the project, Motion Story focused on fact-finding. They took the time to understand our business and industry while researching to understand what our value proposition was and how our products work.At the same time, they continued to talk to us about the key message that we wanted to deliver.

After the research stage, they talked to us about the best way to communicate our message to prospective clients. We concluded that two separate videos were the best way to meet our goals.

The 30-second video introduces our company and broadly describes our value proposition to potential clients, while the 90-second video delves more deeply into our flagship product, Oneview. 

Once we decided to develop two videos, they went through several drafting stages and provided storyboards for us to approve. After a bit of back and forth with them, they moved onto the final product.

What is the team composition?

JF: We worked with three members of their team, including a salesperson, a writer, and Daniel (Creative Director). Daniel oversaw the project, but we interacted with the salesperson most.

How did you come to work with Motion Story?

JF: We were looking for a company to develop explainer videos for us. We looked online and saw some of Motion Story’s work. We were really impressed with the graphics and attention to detail in all of their videos. Unlike the other companies we considered, Motion Story creates in-depth and detailed 3D animations in addition to 2D videos. 

How much have you invested in them?

JF: The total cost of our engagement with Motion Story was about $15,500 AUD (approximately $11,000 USD).

What is the status of this engagement?

JF: The project started in January 2020 and wrapped up in June 2020.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

JF: Both videos are visible to our clients through PowerPoints and eBooks, and will be featured on our new website as well. We’ve also posted both videos on LinkedIn and YouTube.

Although there are no direct metrics, these videos provide clarity to customers and help explain our business. In particular, the 90-second video unpacks how Oneview works and effectively shows how businesses can benefit from its use.   

They delivered quality work and, at every stage of the project, maintained a really high standard of service. 

MF: We wanted to create a video that represented who we were, what we do, and the values we hold as an organization. Although given the nature of our industry, typical B2C metrics don’t really apply to us, these videos meet our needs.

How did Motion Story perform from a project management standpoint?

JF: They were great to communicate with, were friendly, and always delivered on time. 

MF: They were excellent. Because we have our core business to attend to on a daily basis, they followed up with us and clearly communicated what they needed from us in order to get the job done. In addition to managing themselves and the deadlines that they had to meet, they corralled us as well.

JF: We talked over Zoom and email.

What did you find most impressive about them?

MF: Their creative process was really strong, and so is their customer focus.

JF: I was impressed by the extent of their efforts to understand what we wanted from the project. Right from the get-go, they made sure that we were very happy with the message that they delivered.

Are there any areas they could improve?

MF: No, we were delighted with the engagement as well as the output.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

MF: Let them do their job, but be there to provide them with the information that they need. They will ask for a lot of information and will have a lot of sessions to distill down the message and make sure that it is accurate. Make sure you engage with them fully.

Then, the team created the storyboard and voice-over. They then edited everything together into a finished product. What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Motion Story did a great job — the team put a lot of effort into the script and simplifying it as much as possible for our audience. They were exceedingly was generous with their ideas and receptive to feedback during the storyboarding process. Furthermore, their illustrations were really attractive. Two of my colleagues even asked me who did them.

How did Motion Story perform from a project management standpoint?

There was a bit of a delay with their deliverable, but we also had delays on our end. Overall, it wasn’t a big deal. To communicate, we used monday.com and emails. Finally, they delivered the files through Dropbox.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They generously gave us advice on the script and messaging to make it simple enough for our audience. Additionally, the quality of Motion Story’s animation was spectacular.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They could be more transparent with their processes. There was a big jump between what I saw during storyboarding and the final product. However, it did end up looking good.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be prepared to invest some time in writing the script with the team.

Method are the makers of visible, flexible & beautiful recycling bins for the modern workplace. Method uses human-centred design to solve recycling and sustainability issues in the workplace. I am the Marketing Team Lead and oversee all of the marketing activity for our three markets.

For what projects/services did your company hire Motion Story, and what were your goals?

We needed a video that gave the viewer a general understanding of the products, the benefits of the products and our values. Our goal was to have a snappy video that gave our website visitors a general understanding of who we are and what we do given we have a niche product.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

From the get-go Motion Story stood out from others we were considering, Daniel understood the value of design to our business, that we were working to a budget but still needed to maintain our premium branding and had worked on similar projects. While not the cheapest, the quality of their work and interactions I had with Daniel it was clear they were the most suitable partner.

Describe the video(s) and the process in detail, including the project steps and all stages of production.

Starting with the discovery meeting they guided us through the rest of the project, the script only required small alterations, the visual design was better than we could have imagined and it all happened very quickly. We were confident that they had understood our brand so we were able to trust them to take the lead on the design. The result was a 70 second video that has received great feedback from our partners.

Who did you work with and what was the feedback process like?

I worked with Daniel who guided the process, there were regular catch-ups and plenty of opportunities for feedback.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

We received positive feedback from all of our industry partners who will also utilise it to sell our products. For a video about bins we were pretty astounded by the results, it has a 62% completion rate and a 21% view rate. This will be a long-term asset for our business.

Describe their project management style, including communication tools and timeliness.

We're in New Zealand so all of our communication was via video calls, it was a pleasure working with the team. We were flexible on time but the project was finished before expected and we were updated regularly with expectations on when to expect the next step of the project to be completed.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Their clear understanding of brand and values. Ultimately this made the process so much easier for us as they continually demonstrated their understanding of our business and we could trust them to guide the project with creative license.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Honestly no, we will be using them again in the future and have already recommended their services to others.

I’m a well-being project advisor at a psychological health company. We provide mental health and wellbeing training to organizations, as well as counseling for their employees. My job is to look after any of our well-being projects, so I’m in charge of the videos, podcasts, and fact sheets we send to our clients.

What challenge were you trying to address with Motion Story?

We needed someone to create animations for our well-being app.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Motion Story created animated videos for us. These videos detail different psychological concepts, like stress, anxiety, and depression, which we wanted to address in a short online learning course. During our initial discussions, we told them about our ideas of having three-minute animated videos with voiceovers that reflected the visuals. We then had a scoping phase for them to figure out what type of animation we needed. Since the concepts were quite complicated, we decided for the videos to be simple so they wouldn’t overshadow the topic.

Afterward, the team asked us for certain documentation, so we sent our desired script and animation ideas for them to review. They then pared it down so it would fit within the three-minute time frame. Finally, the edited script was sent back to us so one of our teammates could record the voiceover. Meanwhile, Motion Story began the storyboarding process. The team sent us key screens for us to review, and it was presented along with the corresponding dialogue under each storyboard tile. 

Once everything was approved, they moved on to the design and creation of the final animation in alignment with the finished voiceover. Once the team finished a video, we downloaded it and plugged it into our app ourselves. We also uploaded snippets to our social media to market the app. Overall, we had 3–4 big projects with them where they produced 12–18 animated videos. It usually took them 6–8 weeks to create five videos. We plan on working with them again in the future if any of our clients request animations.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We got great feedback from our clients. The team did a great job of cutting the script we wrote and changing the language, so it was easier for viewers to understand. The videos were really easy to watch because they explained the information effectively. These kinds of feedback were the best because it can be pretty confusing to discuss psychological concepts and brain processes. It was great to hear that Motion Story did an excellent job simplifying all that information in the videos.

How did Motion Story perform from a project management standpoint?

Motion Story was terrific when it comes to project timelines. At the start of the process, they let us know the usual time it takes them to complete some videos, and they also asked us if we require a faster turnaround time for them to accommodate. They then mapped out how long each stage of the project would take, and they stuck to those deadlines. All the delays were always on our end, but the Motion Story team still made sure we got the videos on time.

In terms of communication, we had weekly calls. Whenever we had any questions, they were happy to jump on a call to clarify anything. If they needed feedback on their work, they uploaded their drafts to Vimeo for us to see. They also used a program to send us their storyboards. Finally, the team sent the finished videos via Dropbox. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

I’m most impressed with how adaptable they were to our needs. Motion Story was flexible in terms of time frame and scope, which was very helpful because we had some specific requirements. Nothing was too difficult for them. They were a solid team, and we were so pleased with their work.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I don’t think there’s anything they could’ve done differently. We wanted to make changes in the initial storyboards, but we didn’t have to make any more modifications as the project went on. They figured out exactly what we wanted to show in the videos.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Communicate as clearly as possible. Don’t assume that vendors can read your mind. Instead, be upfront with your expectations and give the most thorough information you can so they can produce what you need.

For what projects/services did your company hire Motion Story, and what were your goals?

Corrosion and marine growth are entwined in a complicated relationship. We wanted an easy way for people to understand how this relationship affects boat efficiencies and the biosphere. We felt that an animation was the best way to show this. We needed the project to appeal to a wide audience and be easily understood locally but also in international markets. The end use is to educate and will be used at trade shows, training events and social media channels.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

We looked for animation companies that were local to us but also were drawn to Motion Story as we felt an alignment with some of there previous work. We narrowed the tender down to two companies and choose Motion Story as we felt they had a greater understanding of what we were trying to achieve.

As Motion Story is located in Byron Bay we conducted several discovery calls via Zoom. As we had already done a lot of work on what we wanted to achieve we were able to send across a brief including a rough script and imagery we wanted "reimagined". Motion Story then worked with us back and forth with several "Storyboards" to finalise the script and illustrations and final animated video.

Who did you work with and what was the feedback process like?

Our initial discovery call was with the Creative Director and Animator. After that the project was spearheaded by the Creative Director and he would feed back changes / reviews to the rest off the development team. They used app.boords.com to illustrate each scene with script and illustration which allowed us to communicate directly through comments for revisions / changes etc

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The video is being shown currently at an International Boat Show as part of an ongoing TV video loop along with some other assets extracted from this project. We have had engagement from our website and socials also from customers.

Describe their project management style, including communication tools and timeliness.

The Creative Director spent a lot of time with us up front to understand the technical aspect of the message we were trying to deliver. Each time we spent on this process he ensured he was able to relay back to us the mechanics of what we were trying to achieve to ensure we didn't waste expensive time down the track in animation stage. He was personable and engaged at all times and kept the project on track through each milestone.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

They took the time to fully understand our company ethos and how the relationship between our product and how a variety of other factors effect efficiencies and rates of corrosion. This knowledge allowed them to make valuable suggestions to improve our message in ways that we had not thought of before. We made many changes based on their suggestions. We loved their animated take on our logo at the end of the animation, which we now use on our socials.They were very flexible to work within our available time frames.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

We were very happy with their communications and transparency on the process and the expected costs. They delivered a great resource, I can't think of anything we would have changed and would use them again.

I work for the local government in Sydney. I’m the senior sustainability engagement officer.

We run a program called Solar my School. It focuses basically on making it easy for all different types of schools to investigate and install solar panels on their buildings. We oversee that across Sydney and other parts of the state.

What challenge were you trying to address with Motion Story?

We wanted to provide a summary explanation of the program for school decision makers, other local governments, or people who are interested in Solar my School.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

There were different stages in the project. We started with a kickoff meeting to really clarify what we wanted and the process Motion Story would go through. My team and I worked with the copywriter for the script development. Then, we went on to storyboarding and putting together the animation around our vision.

We gave Motion Story a brief, and they very much embraced it and brought their own kind of creative skills and perspectives to the project. They got our program and what we were trying to do very quickly, but they did their own research in terms of creative development. They looked at references to bring something new to the table that would fit our target audience.

What is the team composition?

We worked with two main contacts and a copywriter. I mostly dealt with Daniel (Creative Director) and our account manager.

How did you come to work with Motion Story?

We developed the brief of what we wanted and put out a request to 3–4 providers for a quotation. Motion Story was one of the companies that responded. They provided a very clear proposal and some interesting visual references. We liked their attention to detail, and their package was aligned with our budget.

Not only did Motion Story engage with us not by email, but they were very responsive over phone calls, which is always useful. They were very generous with their time. We really loved the proposal and package, so we ended up engaging with them.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent $14,000–$15,000 AUD (approximately $11,000–$12,000 USD).

What is the status of this engagement?

We started the project in November 2019, and it wrapped up in February 2020. However, we plan on calling them again to revive some of our animations because our program has changed slightly.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We use the animation in our presentations and social media a lot, and it’s been really well received. We’ve had lots of internal positive feedback from other colleagues and teams. The visual elements have been remarked positively as well. Also, the animation clearly explained something that could be quite complex to understand.

How did Motion Story perform from a project management standpoint?

It was fantastic. We had regular meetings and phone calls — there weren’t any problems. We couldn’t fault them on their project management; it was great. We could follow up kind of by the minute, and they were always responsive to feedback.

We mostly used Google Drive to look at the scripts. They had a platform to share and look at the drafts, animations, and development. We used a lot of Zoom calls since they’re in a different location — we’re in Sydney and they’re like a nine-hour drive up north in Byron Bay.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I couldn’t compare them to others, but I found the communication to be excellent — it was open and constant, which I think is very important. They were always happy to jump on a call.

Additionally, they went above and beyond the scope of work to get it right. They were passionate about the project, and we really appreciated that.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can’t really think of anything major to comment on. It was a tricky time because it was over Christmas and New Year, and then COVID-19 happened, but that didn’t affect us.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

As with any service provider, be clear in your brief about what you want, but also be open to creative ideas. Motion Story brought something new to the party that we hadn’t considered yet.

We’re a startup called Corta Coin, and we’re implementing a financial product on the blockchain for B2B clients.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Motion Story?

Given that blockchain was an emerging technology, we wanted an explainer video that could get the idea across to people, including angel investors and other clients. Instead of spending 10 minutes explaining our product to them, we believed a 90-second clip would get them on board better. 

After they watched the video, we could answer their questions. We could also use the video when sending emails introducing our company. They might not finish the whole 90-second video, but it would be good enough for them to get our idea. For this purpose, we hired Motion Story.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We already developed some assets like logos and icons for the video. Motion Story then created a script that fit the bill. Afterward, we worked on storyboarding what the video would look like. Once that was set, we created 3D animations and music. Along the way, I was able to throw a few ideas while they provided options for colors and similar things. Other times, they gave me alternatives. 

What is the team composition?

I primarily worked with Daniel (Creative Director) and one of his partners. They also had a scriptwriter, but I didn’t interact with him. 

How did you come to work with Motion Story?

I could have gotten an inexpensive video explainer overseas, but I knew the dangers of using inexpensive services, especially with creative work. Nonetheless, I tried to search overseas to get a benchmark of the services. I also explored locally and around English-speaking countries like Canada, the US, and Australia since the video content was in English. 

I received a few quotes. Some of them were unreasonable, while others missed what I was trying to achieve. Then, my choices came down to two options, including Motion Story. Ultimately, it all boiled down to industry knowledge and passion, and that made me pick Motion Story over other alternatives. Creative work was really about who I could spitball the best with, and that was what I felt with them.

We spent a bit over $8,000. 

What is the status of this engagement?

The project lasted from November 2019–February 2020.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

To measure success, we checked whether people responded correctly to the project. Our hit rate was between 30%–40%. That wasn’t solely because of the explainer video, but it definitely drove traffic to our website. When people visited the site, they watched the video and didn’t look at anything else. 

Moreover, I was pleased with the quality of their work, which was clean. They gave me options in terms of what they could do. As a startup, we appreciated the fact that we also had choices in terms of pricing. Prices could get steep quickly, but their pricing was valid. On top of that, the project was done swiftly, and they stuck to the timelines, meaning we were truly on the same page. 

How did Motion Story perform from a project management standpoint?

Motion Story worked out deadlines and pushed them when they needed to, but they delivered fast. Timelines were hammered out even before they committed to the project. They told us their own pipelines and what they could accommodate; they were on top of their workload. 

It helped that one of their creative team members worked in a financial institution before. As a result, they understood the goals and implications of what we wanted to achieve. Given that, our workflow felt seamless. They asked me if I had any specific preferences, and I personally enjoyed that. I was happy to be hands-on, and they certainly accommodated me. 

We communicated via email, and they’d sometimes call me. If I had a burning question about work, I could call them up to have a chat about it. They were open to talking through what was on my mind. We worked virtually, but I went to meet them face-to-face during the final touches of the project. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

Motion Story understood our vision, and they executed it the way I wanted them to do. They also brought an angle to the project that I didn’t think about, and I was happy about that. I wanted them to be creative for me, and I didn’t want to get in their way. In the end, I was pleased with the outcome. 

I couldn’t have done the project without them, and that was another measure of success that I cared about. I spent money on their team to create a video; if they sent me something I could’ve done by myself, I’d feel like I wasted my money. Fortunately, the Motion Story team worked well from the story to the animations and visuals. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

The timelines could’ve been tighter, but Motion Story was under the pump since we engaged during Christmas. They also had projects committed by the end of the year. Frankly, they were transparent about it, and that was all I could really ask. 

In other words, I could’ve gotten the video sooner, but they also delivered it at the time that they said they would — I was fully aware and accepting of that. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

If you want to get an explainer video from experts, what you’re truly paying for is creativity. If you know exactly what you want and you’re just going to stomp out all the creative juices from the team, just go for a less costly vendor — for better or for worse, you’ll get exactly what you ask. 

With Motion Story, you’re paying for your vision, and they’ll make sure they get it right. Even if you get off on the wrong foot or meander halfway, they’ll stay committed to delivering a great product at the end. They’ll see you through. Overall, have your vision, but don’t get too much in their way. Figure out what you want, and then take their creative input — that’s why you’re paying them.

To create a short introductory explainer video that is animated for our website/company (similar to vidoes created by brands such as Slack, Monday.com, ZenDesk).

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

There were no measurable positive outcomes. The project was a complete failure due to misleading promises, subpar work that did not match expectations and refusal to issue a refund. Instead of progress or success, we experienced wasted time, financial loss and lots of frustration.

Describe their project management. Did they deliver items on time? How did they respond to your needs?

The project management from the owner was terrible. We spent hours explaining our vision, but they completely misrepresented what they could deliver. There was no transparency, at no point did they tell us our expectations wouldn't be met until it was too late. The work was way off from what was promised and when we raised our concerns, they were dismissive and rude. Deadlines didn’t matter because the quality was so poor that we couldn’t even use what was delivered.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Nothing impressive, quite the opposite. The most 'unique' thing was how dishonest and misleading he was. He overpromised, underdelivered and refused to take accountability. To be honest, the entire experience felt like a scam.

Are there any areas for improvement or something Motion Story could have done differently?

They should have been honest from the start about what they could actually deliver within our budget that we stated clearly. Clear communication, transparency and integrity would have prevented this mess. Instead they misled us, wasted our time and refused to refund our money when they failed to meet expectations.
