The project involved redesigning the corporate website, while implementing a B2B eCommerce platform to allow our clients (garden centers, landscapers, municipalities, and so on) to place their orders online and seeing live inventories, prices and more. The challenge was that all the product and client related data was hosted, not in the Magento platform but in SAP Business One (that was implemented at the same time within the company). 
All the logitiscal aspects of order management was also taken care of in SAP B1 (order confirmation, shipping, invoicing, etc.).  
Unlike most ordering processes in other industries, in the horticulture business, clients are used to place an order for a "future" delivery date (ie : placing an order in the fall for the next gardening season the following spring) and keep adding or removing items during the following months up to delivery date in the spring (or, sometimes, on our side, we need to adjust their orders because products might become unavailable for a number of reasons during the winter months). 
Instead of having the client create new orders (to add to his initial order), which we did to start with or call us to remove items, we will soon be able to give them (and us as well) the opportunity to add/remove items from an existing order with all that data being synchronized in real time with our ERP. 
In the same way, they will be able to provide us with additional information related to their order (information that is used to print personalized hangtags and signs for the different items in the order) The product pages, are also required to show temporary information (such as their blooming status, or or "live" field pictures and so on), again, all coming from our ERP or WMS.

The ability for our clients to be able to place orders easily (and we're receiving great comments from them about how they like our website to place orders!)

The web share of our sales volume in the first year of launch already impressive, considering we are not in an industry where our clients are very "technological". 

The ability to manage all data within our ERP and see it show up correctly in our eCommerce

In general, MageMontreal was very responsive and creative to find solutions to our challenges. Despite changes in the Account management team, there was always a good response to adjust to our concerns and needs. We now have a very knowledgeable team that allows us to keep pushing the envelop to develop non-traditional functions for a eCommerce platform like Magento

I'm the project management office director at a healthcare services company. We have multiple business units, including medical analysis in a laboratory and a sleep business unit that provides services and diagnoses for sleep troubles. We also sell products related to sleep healthcare.

What challenge were you trying to address with MageMontreal?

We needed help with web design and development for our e-commerce website. We initially had another platform and needed to migrate to a new one.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

MageMontreal has created our Magento e-commerce from scratch. They've been fulfilling our e-commerce development and web design and development needs. MageMontreal has been responsible for designing, developing, and implementing our new platform.

Since we have UX designers in our marketing department, MageMontreal has aimed to make our designs compatible with Magento. We've provided the Figma files, and they've implemented them. For some aspects, MageMontreal has also offered insights about implementing the designs on Magento. They currently provide support services for us.

What is the team composition?

We work with five people from MageMontreal: a backend developer, a frontend developer, a product owner, and an infrastructure developer. We also have a project manager from their side to discuss billing and administrative aspects.

How did you come to work with MageMontreal?

We didn't have an official RFP because we're a private company. Our marketing department suggested Magento as a solution, and we compared multiple providers with our marketing and IT departments. When we searched for web development providers, we found MageMontreal to be a Magento development agency.

We contacted them and had kickoff calls to define our needs. We went through an internal vetting process to choose the solution and the web agency. After that, we got the official sign-off to execute the project.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started collaborating with MageMontreal in November 2022, when we got all the business requirement collection and documentation. In March 2023, we got the high-level design, solution, and pricing and the executive sign-off to go with the execution. The product execution lasted from April 2023 to October 2024. We went live with the Magento platform in October 2024. We're running our second and third engagement phases, which should last until March 2025.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We have received positive feedback from the marketing teams. Since Magento admin is effortless, the marketing team can easily configure promotions. We've had our first Black Friday with the new platform and seen positive results and increased sales. Our marketing team appreciates working on Magento, and we're obtaining more sales than in previous years.

How did MageMontreal perform from a project management standpoint?

The MageMontreal team is responsive and professional. They've delivered on time and supported us during the go-live. The team has been available to adjust configurations and fix bugs we've discovered after the go-live. The first delay has occurred from our side because we've changed our requirements. We've requested an integration between the e-commerce platform and our ERP, and it has been more complicated than expected, creating delays. However, the delay wasn't from MageMontreal's side.

We use Azure DevOps for project management, although the primary communication is through their platform, and we have weekly calls. We also use Microsoft Teams, Google Docs, and Google Sheets for the project's documentation.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The MageMontreal team is excellent, professional, and fun to work with. They always have solutions to our problems and are very responsive. They've demonstrated proactivity in addressing issues for some items.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Since we struggled with tracking the budget consumption and work progress at the beginning of the project, they can improve the administrative side of the company. We initially had a pre-booked bank of time, and the work was in progress. We always needed to get clarifications from their side to ensure we had the capacity for the project because it was running on prepaid time.

At the beginning of a sprint, I always had a spike in the budget consumption without real progress. We had to wait until the sprint review to finish the work and find a balance between the budget consumption and work progress. It definitely isn't a technical issue but rather an administrative one.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I recommend working with MageMontreal. They are professional experts in Magento implementation. Be clear when defining your business needs and expectations. Discuss complicated questions from the beginning to ensure the team is aligned on the solution.

Yes. In some cases we've been charged for simple e-mail communications, or even the time takes to quote small things such as implementing a module on a website. It makes us feel like the 10+ year partnership we have with them is undervalued.

Our website was initially created in Magento 1.0 in 2010 and had never received any software updates leaving us vulnerable to cyber-attacks. During the five years previous, we had to switch to calling customers for payment information instead of allowing them to check out online which turned off a great many buyers.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

MageMontreal came recommended to us by the hosting service JetRails. After speaking with Guillaume about the scope of the project, it was clear they had the expertise in Magento to make our site function better.

The work entailed a few meetings, but as we were simply doing a behind-the-scenes refresh, they were able to get started quickly. Our main goal was to have a site that could once again safely take payments as well as bringing the software up to date for better functionality.
