Activy Bike&Run Game - mobile app serving as a wellbeing tool for employers to organize fitness challenges for employees. The scientific gamification in cycling&running challenges helps people to build healthy habits and promote active lifestyle.

Corporates and startups use Activy Challenges in mobile app to drive engagement and promote health or CSR programs at their workplaces. Activy app was also used by city authorities to run city-wide bike transportation games as social campaigns.

For what projects/services did your company hire LeanCode?

Having a rough web prototype we started working with Leancode to build a mobile app which track sport activities and gamifies them to organize challenges for corporates, cities and free games for users.

The scope of the project also included web admin panel, game creator as well as web platform for end users. With this complexity we relies on Leancode not only with development but also ideation, UX, business model design, prioritizing features.

What were your goals for this project?

We run a B2B2C business model so the goal of the product is to serve both customers (employers, cities, brands) and also end users (cyclists, runners, etc.). Before building the product we already had clients like Google, Microsoft, Santander, DHL, DPD and many other well known brands.

This is why were particularly focused on the best-in-class solution with highest standard of quality. At the same time we need an extra usability to make the gamification method appealing for end users to achieve the positive impact on their health habits.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

We talked with many potential vendors but there were 2 factors that led us to select LeanCode:

1. experience of founders and PMs from building their own products and startups
2. unique experience with technologies to lower the cost of building MVP and early stages of products Most important we decided to run pre-development workshop with LeanCode which helps us to understand the quality, values and principles of the team. And that makes all the difference!

From 2018 since now we built 3 versions of the product:

1. MVP: server app and iOS and Android clients, web admin panel (.NET, Xamarin, Azure). All UI was also delivered by LeanCode to make the development process smooth and cheaper
2. Activy 2.0 - adding Machine Learning module to detect frauds and automatically detect and track bike rides without even pulling the phone out of the pocket
3. Activy 3.0 - rebuilding apps with completely new UX and lots of new features based on user feedback (React Native), lots of development on server side, building web platform for end user (React Native). We also implement Google Cloud Firestore database to record activities. UI was delivered externally this time

What was the team composition?

The size of the team changes over time as LeanCode is known with their great flexibility and understanding of clients. Since 2017 we run 3-5 months of development process with a team ranging from 1 to 8 developers (usually 4 people). We tested many models of building product and maintenance so we really do not need our internal development team so far.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Since 2017 we've served over 400 customers (big employers) with names like Google, Microsoft, Santander, DPD, DHL, 3M, Robert Bosch, Hochland and many others.

The avg. rating of the app is 4.4 vs. 4.1 fo the pretty difficult category of health&fitness app. We have over 35 000 users across Poland, Germany and Netherlands.

The app wins the Imagine Cup Smart City 2017 competition organized by Microsoft, also with extra prize for design. Activy was also recognized as the best startup in Innovation 2018 competition in Poland and took part in Google Campus Acceleration program.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

At the beginning as a founder I was the part of the development team working as a full time Product Owner and Manager. At the next stages we included our in-house junior PO and backend developer.

It was experimental but works really well as guys from LeaCode are also very open to test new approaches. LeanCode taught us how to build great product effectively.

They introduced all the popular tools and frameworks to our team which had zero experience at the beginning. We learnt a lot from them and also got valuable technological inspirations. They are still very engaged in our business!

What did you find most impressive about this company?

If you decide to work with LeanCode you will experience a lot more than an usual relation between a client and a vendor:

1. they understand businesses, not only technology
2. they share their experience from building companies and products
3. they have empathy combined with responsibility And they are really lean - both for small and big clients. I experienced a long entrepreneurial journey with them.

Are there any areas for improvement?

From time to time they are too optimistic with booking time for you so be prepared to wait a few days more to start a project. I think it's because they really want to be flexible for you and other clients. If you want to design a simple website you'd better hire other folks as LeanCode should deliver a good piece of software rather than the trivial frontend.

I’m the owner of Kędzia Farm, a company that does farming and breeding.

What challenge were you trying to address with LeanCode?

I was looking for a software house that would be able to solve a few problems that I had on my farm. I wanted to create a mobile application to solve the problems of everyday management problems for farmers.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They developed my mobile app. The main key was to use it for barn management. The app was also aimed at helping solve the problems in animal welfare with a special focus on ventilation in every barn and farm.

What is the team composition?

I worked with the owner. They also assigned a project manager and about 10 people in total who worked on my application. It’s a three-part mobile application. In each part, there were 2-3 people doing the work.

I met with other software vendors, but the people were too close-minded.

I spent about $25,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from January 2018–December 2019.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Animal breeding is a difficult profession and they were very keen to help and understand. They had very good ideas for the application. I started testing the app on my farm. I’m now trying to scale it. I’m happy with the quality of their work. It was sometimes even better than I expected. I will have to work with them again because I can’t find anyone better.

How did LeanCode perform from a project management standpoint?

Communication was good. We met in person to go over the project before the development started. I went to their office and had a long meeting with them where we tried to write down everything. It was a very fruitful meeting. In every meeting, we were able to solve problems. 

They were always on time and the ideas they had to solve the different problems were very innovative.

What did you find most impressive about them?

My favorite part was the people and the way they were very involved in the project. They were very keen to understand what I’m doing and find the best way to solve it. They try to give me more opportunities to have a few more things in my application. They were very involved and very hardworking.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I’m really pleased with my application. I would only change some tiny things but nothing big.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I recommend using them because they’re very open to their clients. They have so much knowledge to solve problems for different professions.

Discoarmor is the first solution suitable for travelers and students for midterm stay. We want to revolutionize the process of selling insurance products by: - trouble mode - easy ticketing in case of emergency and accident; - cloud based - accesible and protected in terms of all sensitive and medical data; - student needs oriented - control panel on the mobile phone with transparent pricing.

Team is composed of 5 people: Project Owner, UX Specialist, fronted and backend developers. Over time it was changing according to current needs.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The main outcome from the project is that LeanCode delivered an application which meet our expectations (very good UX, integration with the software of our partner). The appliacation was also accepted by our partner (insurance company).

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Once we have selected this vendor, we had every day meetings with IT team to plan the tasks for the day. Every two weeks we were setting targets for the next period of time. The communication between teams was easy and effective. We connected over a Google Meet at least once a week and all team members’ information level was up to date.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

The team is very well organized, which allowed them to develop the app very quickly. Moreover, they are very detail-oriented.

No, there is nothing to improve so far.

I am the Commercial Lead for New Products at Shell Global Business Development Fleet Solutions Team. For two years I was the Venture Lead for one of the pilot mobility products as part of the Digital Accelerated Programme at Shell ( from incubation to monetization)

3 years ago Shell reviewed its strategy and lunched the Accelerated Growth agenda programme. As we wanted to build mobile product ( web and apps) for the long haul transportation segment, we hired LeanCode to help us build and code the product and validate with the B2B transport SMB segment.

LeanCode had competences and skills that were at that time missing in Shell IT ( backend, frontend, mobile Xamarin, reactive native, UX/UI competences). We also wanted to be fast and agile, which was possible thanks to LeanCode and working with external softwere partner.

What were your goals for this project?

Shell is the biggest fuel card provider across the globe, serving the the B2B transportation segment not only with fuel card but also with other mobility services. Shell built web and mobile Transport Management product to optimize daily operation of Fleet Managers, Dispatchers and Drivers.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor?

We selected this vendor out of the five who participated in the tender, as LeanCode possessed the relevant skills and competences, but they also came prepared with the market overview related to the long haul transportation challenges and customers' frictions.

Describe the project in detail.

We took the product from the ideation phase through the Alfa and Beta pilots, validating the product features with customers until launching it in public in Poland in Q2 2020. We have plans to scale to other countries in Europe in 2020/21.

What was the team composition?

We had the Product Owner, Technical Lead, Scrum Master, two backend developers, two frontend developers, 2 mobile developers, UX/UI, QA tester.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Within 4.5 months we able to launch the MVP product as Alfa Pilot, validate the product with customers, pivot and launch again as Beta pilot in 3 months. Further, we improved the product, made it compliant with Shell Compliance Framework and launch it again in the Public. We got positive feedback from customers on the flow and intuitive interfaces.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

It was very effective workflow. LeandCode demonstrated big flexibility skill specially working with such a big player as Shell. Teams were constantly adjusted according to the required scope and priorities.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

I was impressed with the knowledge, the level of the commitment working with us, and how they went beyond the agreed level of support. Great communication skills of the owners. LeanCode helped Shell to shape and learn new agile ways of working with sprints, scrum, etc. They exposed us to new skills and competences.

Are there any areas for improvement?

As I am not the technical expert, I cannot identify the technical area for improvement. However, there are always ways to improve communication and collaboration.

The app was aimed at helping restaurant owners help employees really interested in the job and willing to work. Easy to use app and the system using rating were designed to boost the the level of qualifications amongst users.

Leancode helped us with the app development from a very early stage. The early brainstorming, branding as well as all the flows for both type of users. The app was developed for iOs and Android platforms with the webiste platform for restaurants.

We were assigned a project manager that was our main point of contact. The responsiveness rate was very good. During regular meetings/ updates we were presented to the entire team working on the project and the strategic decisons regarding further development were always discussed and explained.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The app had a very good feedback from the users. They found it way better than the platforms available on the market. The restaurants were satisfied with the flow we designed. Within the first 2 months after the launch we had 1000 users registered.

The workflow was very smooth. We used slack to communicate, emails for bigger updates and regular meetings to discuss what is next and summerize each sprint.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

What struck us most was not only the ability to develop and implement our ideas but also the way they were willing to share their business knowledge and tips to help us avoid possible obstacles.

Are there any areas for improvement?

We were really happy with the quality. The project could have been done a little bit faster but it might have been the design pace on our side.
