I’m the co-founder and chief product officer for an over-the-top (OTT) media service. We’re uniquely positioned because we allow people to connect all their services — such as Hulu, Netflix, Twitch, and Youtube — in one central hub. Users don’t have to pan through multiple apps; it’s all in one place. One of the biggest features is that users can help their discovery by following other people and seeing what they’re watching. We also have live channels, so all kinds of video content are in one place. However, Netflix and Hulu are redirected to their apps.

We launched around August 2021, so we needed help with marketing to drive new users into the app.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Launchpad does App store optimization (ASO) and social media marketing. They’ve done testing around our metadata to see what resonates with our users. The team is also constantly updating and making changes to ensure we’re fully optimized. They work on paid acquisition and anything related to marketing. For example, they analyze if we should focus more on YouTube, Facebook, or Google advertising and then funnel optimization to use our dollars wisely.

At the beginning of our engagement, we worked with Ben (Growth Marketer & Founder) and Hugo (Technical Digital Marketer & Product Lead). Since then, we’ve worked with five other team members.

We discovered them through Google. From there, we had our first calls with Ben and Hugo; they were able to provide a couple of references. We felt overall that they had a solid understanding of the project. We also liked how they structured their workflow; they worked like a SaaS product. Ultimately, we decided to go with Launchpad because they were great at dealing with our budget constraints.

We started conversations with them in November, and we’ve been working with them since December 2021.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The quality has been fantastic, and the team has been very responsive. Launchpad team’s ability to turn around new images and media has been outstanding. They make quick videos for the app stores to make the customers understand our service. Overall, they’ve done a great job.

Right now, getting users on iOS is costing us more money, so we’ve concentrated on Google Ads. We’re getting great CPMs with Android users, and our typical CPM is less than $0.70, which is pretty fantastic.

How did Launchpad by Growth Rocket Apps perform from a project management standpoint?

They always meet deadlines; that’s never a worry on our part. We mostly communicate via Slack. However, we also have a bimonthly meeting with Ben and Hugo to discuss the needs and improvement areas; for example, we see if we need to expand the product or outreach. We also have a biweekly meeting with all team members in all departments. 

They use Monday to manage everything, and our developers use Trello. Additionally, we use Google Analytics for reporting.

What did you find most impressive about them?

One of the things we appreciate the most is their hands-on knowledge and passion. We like to think that everyone gets our product because it’s fantastic, but Launchpad’s team truly gets it. They’re all excited as if they’d come up with the idea themselves, so there’s a sense of ownership as if they were part of the company. They’re also very responsive to the ideas we might have.

Moreover, they have young and experienced teammates that are very familiar with the marketing space. Even though they’re spread out worldwide, they’re very tuned into trends. Overall, they provide excellent marketing assets regarding anything on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I don’t have anything at the time.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Connect with them on Slack and trust them. If you try to micromanage them right off the bat, it becomes increasingly difficult to know that there are other people that know exactly what they’re talking about. Sometimes you just have to sit back, listen, and understand that they have it under control. Launchpad has a lot of experience, and they’ll get you the best results.

We searched online and chose Growth Rocket Apps. Well, it turned out to be a terrible choice. Just wasting our money.

We shared our branding materials and went over our goals. They did market research and created metadata, which didn’t work out well at all.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

They successfully brought us a big drop in organic traffic after we updated our store page with the metadata they offered. For some apps, it seemed to work out well for a few days but as long as we stopped buying paid traffic, it dropped. So can't say their work was helpful.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

They had been delaying a lot. I just got the graphics today that they should have finished a month ago. And still haven't got all the work for the last month though our agreement has ended.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

They delayed a lot, and their service didn't help at all.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Frankly speaking, I won't work with this company anymore and don't recommend it to anyone. Don't waste your money.

Our MyBubble mobile application allows families, friends and colleagues to form a 'bubble' to journal their moods, softly communicate how they're feeling, recognise the signs and to know how to support each other's mental health in person or remotely.

Whilst technically I understood the inner-workings of the MyBubble application and associated business operations, I didn't have the expertise or know-how to create a marketable brand to complement the MyBubble concept. In addition, I needed assistance with App Store Optimisation, keyword analysis, copywriting and graphic designs for marketing images. I knew I needed to enlist experts in this area to ensure that the MyBubble message and brand came across correctly to audiences and was appealing to a wide number of people.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

I'd had a number of calls with ASO marketers and found Launchpad understood the concept, didn't pressure you into long contracts and were happy to work with start-ups like myself that were new in the space.

Firstly, we conducted questionnaires and on-boarding calls to really understand the target audiences, what MyBubble was looking to achieve and what message I wanted to get out there. Then an easy, digital plan was created via Monday.com that outlined the project's steps, everyone's tasks for each steps and timelines.

This helped me map out progress or areas I needed to provide approvals or further information. The key deliverables were full competitor and keyword analysis to better understand the market, copywriting to capture MyBubble's concept for its App Store product pages, the MyBubble icon which has now become the brand logo and also listing graphics.

A Slack channel was created at the project's inception which meant that all team members that were delivering key areas of work were always available to contact. I worked with each individual associated with every deliverable including the account manager, graphic designer, copywriter and over-arching project manager.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

Thus far, the deliverables have been pre-launch ensuring that MyBubble's branding and product pages were professional, clear and appealing. However, reception of MyBubble's new brand icon, graphics and copywriting has been positive so far ahead of the launch.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Due to the project plan in Monday.com and the open Slack channel, communication was always frequent and when required.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Launchpad captured the idea and meaning behind the MyBubble application's concept. Mental health can be a deeply personal and sensitive issue. Therefore, it was very important to me that all marketing-related material was relatable, professional and understanding of our audiences needs. I'm happy to say that Launchpad did all of this and more.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

I think the only thing I could think of is that the competitor analysis and keyword analysis is presented via a digital online link. However, it could be useful to provide a PDF copy of this information as well as this just for a point for future reference.

What was the scope of their involvement?

They created the screenshots and language to help describe what the app does in the Google Play Store and App Store. Their team added illustrations, better colors, and more tailored-specific designs to the app description. They also created an illustrated video to help gain attention as well as updated my website. Together, we brainstormed and ideated an animated fox that looks intelligent. The fox is the face of who’s talking to the kids about binary.

I primarily communicate with two individuals and occasionally with another two individuals. Orin (Head of Customer Success) is my main point of contact.

I needed everything to look good and wanted everything to be a tight, coherent app. This is an educational app, and I want to get it to schools. Because of that, it has to go through a really tight legal screening process through the school districts. The app must comply with all the federal laws around confidentially. Growth Rocket Apps helped me get it together, and as a next step, I’m going to start reaching out to the school districts. I really feel that I have something that will pass all the scrutiny.

I highly recommend Growth Rocket Apps. They are adaptable, flexible, and explained things to me. Their team regularly checks in with me about how things are going or how I might provide feedback on all the elements. I appreciate the process with them. They have my loyalty for all things related to app marketing.

How did Growth Rocket Apps perform from a project management standpoint?

Project management is going fabulously. They have a lead person who keeps track of all the different aspects of the project. I have a lot of different things going on at once. This individual ensures that all the elements are meeting deadlines as well as getting feedback and approval from me on a regular basis. They also keep in touch with me so I know what the next steps are and what I need to do to keep things moving.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They don’t have some cookie-cutter process that applies to every single client. Growth Rocket Apps individualizes and specializes their care, plan, and development to each client’s specific vision — that’s what sets them apart.

I was a little unfamiliar with Slack, but I caught up to speed with it. Other than that, there isn’t anything else that needs improvement.

You can trust Growth Rocket Apps because they have your best interests in mind. Have a clear vision of what you want and hire them because they’ll make sure your vision comes to life, not their vision.

What was the scope of their involvement?

First, we strategized together on the steps of the initial marketing materials. We talked about where the ads would go and what the brand narrative would look like.

Then, we did the design work. We figured out how to convey my message to different types of consumers. We also devised how to create an experience within my application that’s consistent with the values of marketing

They provide key steps, objectives, as well as updates along the way. There’s plenty of transparency for me. Once their software gets better, they’ll be able to provide live updates instead of just reports. We keep in touch on Slack.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They do a really good job of understanding their clients and understanding their products and needs. They’re working to build a narrative ad campaign that fits our long-term goals. When a client puts in the time, and they have the opportunity to work very closely, the end result is excellent.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I would’ve liked the design work to be more high-touch. It wasn’t something they offered because of a time zone difference, which didn’t work for me. I would spend 1–2 hours to break down your specific needs and whether you want the design to be high or low touch.

Make sure you spend enough time setting expectations clearly in a video, writing, or an interview with the team. That way, when the team works on marketing materials, they’re able to use that prerequisite knowledge in order to produce things that are in line with expectations.

• Be really really careful how you pay Growth Rocket or Launchpad. They make you pay for everything up front and not based on results. When we needed to end our arrangement they automatically took a further month's payment in advance and promised a refund in a month's time.

The refund never arrived and I've been chasing the payment for over six months! I've been ghosted by Ben for months and they clearly aren't honest people.

Instead, Growth Rocket rebranded as Launchpad but I am sure they carry on with the same practices and never had any intention of refunding thousands of pounds that we contractually due to us.
