I’m the EHS manager for critical risk management at Aecon Group Inc., a North American construction and infrastructure company. We provide integrated solutions and services across civil, transportation, nuclear, utility, and industrial sectors, including project development, financing, and operations.

We needed help building an animated training video for our critical risk management program. The objective of the training was to improve the effectiveness of our internal critical control verification program with the goal of eliminating life-altering injuries and fatalities at our worksites.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Keyring Media took the time to learn about our Critical Risk Management program and the verification process, which helped to understand our organizational vision. They developed a storyboard, worked with Aecon SMEs on iterations, and created the a few iterations of animated video. Once the final product was complete, the team broke the video into sections and helped determine ideas for a knowledge check for trainees. Keyring Media was responsible for animation, scriptwriting, and video production.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We have constant communication with Keyring Media. The team has provided drafts for senior leadership and made edits before the final draft. The project is still new, as we’ve only just rolled it out to our organization. The early feedback is that participants in the WBT see the value in it. For example, an Aecon superintendent from the Utilities sector said, “I just finished the CCV slide presentation. Thank you for taking the time to create this. It was by far one of the better slideshow trainings we have received.” Other people have mentioned in person that they quite enjoyed it.

We have a few things going to improve the quality of our verification submissions, so it may be difficult to measure the long-term impact of the training video by itself, however, it will be part of the overall measurements planned to determine success. Better quality verification submissions and interactions in the field (leading indicators) combined with lower serious injury-fatality (SIF) and SIFp (potential) rates are a key lagging indicator.

We haven’t had any issues with Keyring Media on this project. They’ve delivered on time. We communicate via in-person meetings, virtual meetings, and email or messaging apps.

What did you find most impressive or unique about them?

I appreciate the enthusiasm each team member brings to the project. They instantly recognized the passion we have internally for this program, as it’s a key element of our EHSM system, and brought similar passion to the project. The final product was impressive.

This has been 100% a positive experience. Nothing comes to mind.

Our organization was seeking contractor services to create and produce a bilingual explainer video as part of our efforts to advance OECMs in Canada in support of Canada’s 30x30 target. The purpose of this video was to increase understanding of, and interest in, OECMs as a legitimate conservation tool by demonstrating what OECMs are in a simplified, inspiring and easy-to-understand manner based on national and international guidance. 

The main audience for the video was influencers and decision makers who are responsible for governing and managing land. A secondary audience for the video was the broader conservation community. 

Services were to include communication with contract manager, conducting of background research, creation of video concept, drafting of script and storyboard, procurement of vocal talent, creation of video content and editing as required. Deliverables were final HD versions of the videos, production documents, and all associated media managed files used in production.

There were a couple of smaller instances where attention to detail could have been higher (e.g., animation inconsistencies, typo in text, consistency with brand guidelines), but nothing major and all edits were made promptly.

BACKGROUND

Please describe your company and your position there.

The Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow’s Health (CanPath) is Canada’s largest population cohort and a national platform for health research.

Comprised of more than 330,000 volunteer participants, CanPath is a unique platform that allows scientists to explore how genetics, environment, lifestyle, and behaviour interact and contribute to the development of chronic disease and cancer. 

CanPath is a partnership of seven regional cohorts across Canada.   I am the administrative assistant at CanPath and worked closely with the video production team as we progressed with this project.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire Keyring Media, and what were your goals?

We wanted to develop a video series to enhance CanPath’s profile, reputation, and influence among regional, national, and international scientific communities. We also wanted to increase awareness of CanPath datasets and the portal access process among Canadian and international researchers.

SOLUTION

How did you select Keyring Media and what were the deciding factors?

We selected KeyRing Media because they were within our budget, and we previously had a very pleasant experience working with them on another video project.

Describe the video(s) and the process in detail, including the project steps and all stages of production.

The first video was an overview/introduction video of CanPath for a lay audience to remind participants across the country that they are part of a national study and that could be used during recruitment for new provincial cohorts.

The second video was targeted to researchers to highlight data and biosamples available, how it can be accessed and why they should use it. 

The third video had a knowledge translation focus, highlighting important publications/findings to share with participants to reinforce the value of their participation and to highlight the impact of the cohort for funders, policymakers, and the general public.

Each of these videos had a couple initial calls for brainstorming and storyboarding. Our team crafted draft scripts and we went back and forth on Google Docs to collectively wordsmith the scripts. Once the scripts were ready, the team moved to video production based on approval of the storyboards.

After an initial video draft was complete, a member of the CanPath team and KeyRing media met at a studio for voiceovers in English and French. The videos had final touches after showing them to our Communications experts across the country.

Who did you work with and what was the feedback process like?

At CanPath, our Operations Manager, Project Manager, Communications Officer, and Administrative Assistant (myself) assisted with conceptualizing the videos. We worked closely with team members at KeyRing Media, including the Executive Producer, Producer, and Creative Director.

We exchanged feedback via Google Docs when scripting and KeyRing Media used Frame.io and DropBox to share various iterations of the videos with us.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Our first video with them has reached over 1K views on YouTube! We are working on promoting the second and third videos to our partners and broader audience this summer and fall.

The Executive Producer and Producer were especially easy to communicate with and provided regular progress updates. We discussed progress via e-mail and had touch points on Zoom since our teams were mostly remote during production. The Creative Director also joined on Zoom occasionally to answer specific questions related to the animations.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Since they had worked previously with one of our partners, we appreciated how quickly they understood our study and how we wanted to tell our story. They also had especially innovative ideas for how to share our stories.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

More in-person opportunities to connect with them would have been great, but they worked very well in a virtual space!

I'm the business development director for an engineering firm that design and built testing facilities for the automotive and aerospace industries.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire Keyring Media, and what were your goals?

We tasked Keyring Media with creating a short video that would play in the background of our tradeshow exhibit and would showcase our latest automotive projects, describe our company achievement and capabilities all in a pleasing and eye catching way to attract passerby.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

We interviewed a few potential suppliers but the attention to detail, the interest in our product, the well planned method from ideation to production and the charisma won us over.

Describe the video(s) and the process in detail, including the project steps and all stages of production.

The process started with meeting to go over our expectation in term of messaging and final product look. Then Keyring Media sent us a first pallet a colour and looks for comments, this was not exactly was we had in mind and Keyring Media was really good at hearing us out and modifying the pallet to meet out vision.

We supplied Keyring Media with footage from some or our clients facility which they use in the video creatiuon process. The next step was to assemble a timeline using still short for the video sequence. Once this was approved, Keyring created the first video sequence. This lead to some more back in forth in term of which footage segment to us and the order of presentation of the various segment.

Then on final approval of the video sequence Keyring added the various animation and transition components and finalized the video. Throughout this process they have listen to our needs and feedback and have been a real pleasure to work with. The end product was great and a real hit at the tradeshow.

Who did you work with and what was the feedback process like?

We worked with a team of three at Keyring, a producer, a project manager and graphic designer. Working with the Keyring was a great experience, they were attentive to our needs and feedback, their knowledge and understand of how to best structure the content of a video really help driving some of our early discussions and shaping the frame of that video, they worked fast and efficiency to meet a very tight deadline and the end product was above expectations.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The tradeshow this year was the first since the pandemic, although it was not as busy as pre pandemic show might have been the video running in the background helped attract more attention and was instrumental in being able to quickly and thoroughly explain what we do to numerous new contacts.

One project manager was assigned to the project and was the point of contact for organizing meeting and exchanging documents. The response were timely and there work was efficiency. We only had 3 to 4 weeks to produce this video before the tradeshow. Keyring worked in an organized and consistent manner to be able to deliver the video on time.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

We were really happy with their attentiveness to our feedback and how they were able to grasp exactly our vision and intent and turn it into a splendid video.

I’m the president of a media management consultancy called Empathy.

What challenge were you trying to address with Keyring Media?

We don’t really have anyone capable of making videos for our clients, so we hired them for that exact purpose.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Keyring Media helps us with our video production projects, which mostly involve animation work. We brief them first on the video concept, and once everything’s clear, they then handle the entire production process and incorporate our feedback along the way. Apart from this, they also help us on internal projects, specifically voice recordings.

What is the team composition?

We work with multiple people from their team, including Janine (Founder & Executive Producer, Charlie (Creative Director), and editors.

How did you come to work with Keyring Media?

I’ve known Janine for a long time and worked with her on several previous projects in different companies. They’re really good at what they do, so it’s a no-brainer for us to hire them.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve done so much work with them over the years, so it’s hard to give a number. We’re currently working with them on another project that costs about $15,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in April 2017, and our engagement is still ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Keyring Media has made life easier for us; they’re extremely efficient in leading the entire production process, which allows us to save more time and money and focus on other business priorities. Overall, they’ve been really easy to work with.

How did Keyring Media perform from a project management standpoint?

I don’t know what internal tools they’re using to manage our projects, but they’ve also been very efficient in this regard. They communicate clearly and effectively and always keep us in the loop on any new updates or issues. If there’s an issue, they get to the core of it very quickly.

They also tell us ahead of time whenever they can’t meet a deadline, which allows us to make the necessary adjustments.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I’ve been really impressed with how they’ve made the entire process very seamless. Once they understand the brief and objectives, they always get the job done right — we’ve never had any miscommunications or misunderstandings. They’re personable and really passionate about their craft, too.

Are there any areas they could improve on?

No. I really can’t point out anything that they need to improve on. In fact, I’ve really learned so much from them on how to manage a partner in a business.

Listen to them; they know their stuff.
