AppSoft Creative Solutions primarily focuses on iPhone games. I am one of the company’s three owners. I also handle technical tasks, including testing. We’re a small company, so we’ve had to do many things ourselves.

What challenge were you trying to address with Indeema Software?

We were one of Indeema Software’s first clients, and they helped us get our own company up-and-running. We initially wanted to develop a game for iOS.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Indeema Software has developed two applications for us. The first and simplest one was Dragon Dice, which is a simple dice calculator. It was done fast and worked well, receiving some good reviews in the app store.

The second one was Monkey Invasion, which is a very complex game with five different levels. It took us six to eight months in order to develop and polish everything, but we were able to succeed. The game works across all different devices, from iPads to iPhones.

We supplied screenshots and descriptions of the games to Indeema Software, and they came up with the backend solutions, suggested frameworks and engines, and created all the visual elements using their own graphic designers.

How did you come to work with Indeema Software?

I am originally from Ukraine, and had heard about Indeema Software. They targeted the US market and promised good-quality work in order to build a reputation.

Indeema Software had good pricing, compared to similar companies in the US. They were 90% lower than some other estimates we received, which made us question the quality they could deliver. Still, Indeema Software did a very good job.

How much have you invested with Indeema Software?

The first app was less expensive, at around $2,000. The second app cost closer to $11,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Indeema Software four years ago. The most recent app was finished two years ago.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

For an app to succeed, it needs a good promotion system or company. We only had our apps sitting there, but are still seeing around 100-200 downloads every day, which dropped down from around 400 daily downloads initially. The total count has been around 30,000.

We’re very particular about things, but every single bug or issue we submitted was followed-up and fixed. It was easy to explain to Indeema Software what we wanted to do, and what needed to be changed. The communication and responsiveness were great. Indeema Software was also very flexible, and didn’t demand that we run things under their conditions and terms. I’ve worked with different companies during my career, developing enterprise software, and have come across all kinds of approaches. Some of them can be extremely arrogant in demanding that things be done like they want, under their process flow. Indeema Software was flexible in terms of calls and requirements, taking what we gave them and making it work.

How did Indeema Software perform from a project management standpoint?

They were slightly behind the timelines, but not to the point of being unreasonable. We were expecting more delays actually, so we were impressed with Indeema Software. They were pretty much on time, and one or two additional days wasn’t that bad.

Our contact person wasn’t changed throughout the project, which was a very positive thing. Switching managers and having to explain everything again makes things difficult.

What did you find most impressive about Indeema Software?

We’re working on a different project at this time, and definitely will send Indeema Software a quote. I’ve liked their response and experience, so, if we agree on all aspects, from price to scope, I will definitely use Indeema Software. They’re one of the first companies we send requests to.

Are there any areas Indeema Software could improve?

Out of all the companies we’ve used for outsourcing, Indeema Software is one of the best. They’re reasonable, down-to-earth hard workers.

Sun for Schools is a non-profit organization running a project for installing photovoltaic cells on schools. Our overall mission is to reduce the energy consumed by schools through different means. The first step is to reduce electricity consumption, after which we will focus on gas and water. Another part of the initiative is to teach ecology concepts to young people. The organization was started in 2016.

What challenge were you trying to address with Indeema Software?

In order to finance our project, we need to attract donations. We needed a crowdfunding platform through which Belgian schools could gather donations in order to buy solar batteries and become eco-friendly, so we went to Indeema for its development. This initiative is very successful in other countries and we hope to promote it in Belgium.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We had a clear idea of what we wanted to do for this project and had some design elements ready as well. Indeema Software assisted in finalizing the details and creating the description and design solutions for the missing parts. The, they developed a Node.js platform with an AngularJS frontend.

For every school, we need a unique donation website, which the platform allows us to create. We can manage donations, users, and marketing. People can also add comments on the site and see news about their school’s project.

Each website is custom-branded with unique graphical templates. We have meetings with teachers and school project owners to discuss designs, and based on those discussions, we modify our base design. We have a CMS [content management system] similar to WordPress.

Indeema also provided quality assurance and project management.

How did you come to work with Indeema Software?

I had worked with their project manager 2 years ago for a different initiative around big data. In this context, I asked Indeema Software to develop another piece of software. I didn’t look at other vendors, but I had tried offshoring with Indian companies in the past. It was a nightmare, so we looked at working with a group closer to our office in Belgium.

The project’s timeline was from October to December 2016. We’re currently preparing a new school website.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

Our main focus is on schools and legal buildings in the country. We have tried to onboard 20 schools in 2017, each with around 200 students. We have made a marketing effort for this task, and plan to have every parent on the platform. Currently, we don’t have many users because the project has just been started. We need to find schools, obtain approvals, install the photovoltaic panels, and only then start our funding campaign.

We had a delay in the project delivery due to some technical issues, but in the end, we got exactly what we wanted and needed. Over the course of development, Indeema didn’t hide any issues, but rather kept us informed and provided suggestions.

Even after the official closure of the project, their team still openly assists whenever we have questions or need advice.

How did Indeema Software perform from a project management standpoint?

The collaboration was quite clear. We received daily feedback, and Indeema Software was there to answer whenever we had a question, even outside of working hours. The support was very good and any bugs we identified were corrected immediately, within 1 hour or so.

We mostly communicated by Skype and email. Every milestone was delivered on time and the budget was respected. Indeema Software’s team worked late in order to prevent any potential delays and to fix issues as quickly as possible.

What did you find most impressive about Indeema Software?

They are experts on Node.js and AngularJS. Indeema Software’s knowledge is greater than what I saw while offshoring in China and India. They understood what we needed much better, and are excellent technicians.

The company is based in Austin, Texas. I am the co-founder and co-owner. I head daily operations and lead the design effort on our physical products and mobile applications. The app is an educational tool for marching bands. The app shows students where they’re supposed to be on the field and when they’re supposed to be there. The information is interactive, and they have access to individualized information that helps them learn their show quickly.

What challenge were you trying to address with Indeema Software?

We needed an app development team for both iOS and Android apps.

What was the scope of their involvement?

The project is large and includes many layers. We are looking to develop native apps for Android and iOS for phones, tablets and also a web app interface. 

The parser, which is the largest part of the project, reads 50 pages of coordinates which are GPS locations for every student on the field. The parser required a lot of development, knowledge, and research. We developed a lot of custom views, and we’re currently working on user permissions. We’re doing a lot with geolocation and using QR codes and interfacing with another company to include the drill writing software. Functions of the app include attendance taking, formation viewing, videotaping and sharing to help students in the marching band.

How did you come to work with Indeema Software?

We found them through Upwork, and we scheduled some meetings with them over the course of the week. We decided to use them because they were very transparent and knowledgeable. They offered a full team of people dedicated to their respective fields. We felt comfortable with them.

We’re still in the middle of the project, so I’d like to keep that confidential.

We began working together December 2015, and it’s ongoing.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

We launched our app in beta to 7,000 people this Fall and everything went very well. Indeema worked very hard for 7 months on this program. They are really invested in what we’re doing, and any issues were fixed quickly. We are projecting to have 10 times more paid users in 2017.

How did Indeema Software perform from a project management standpoint?

They’ve been great. The tools we use to collaborate are Skype, email, and Trello. We also use Google Docs to organize different phases of the project.

What did you find most impressive about Indeema Software?

They’re great with communication and organization. Anytime we bring a feature request to them, they study it and provide detailed estimates. They’re very transparent and flexible in that process. They provide very detailed reports on the time they’ve spent on the project.

Are there any areas Indeema Software could improve?

I can’t think of anything. They’ve been so honest with us. Any time they’ve needed to change a resource that’s been working on the project, they’ve been very open and honest with us.

We provide live streams for sports. We started two and a half years ago. I am a co-founder of the company. I was the chief technology officer when we began working with Vakoms, but I've moved on to product management.

We had difficulty hiring enough developers in the US market in order to ramp up quickly. We were trying to go to market within a short timeframe, so we needed a partner to help us.

We initially worked with Vakoms on our web, Android, and iOS applications. We built a custom content management system for the apps. The front-end of the web app was built using AngularJS.

We've worked with a number of companies since our beginning. Many of them were found through Elance and oDesk. We went through a quick interview process and obtained sample code, ultimately giving everyone a trial run of 2 weeks. Vakoms ended up sticking with us.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

I don't have any quantitative metrics at the moment. There have been some communication issues because of our remote collaboration, but we've generally been happy with the quality of code and with the knowledge of Vakoms' developers.

Vakoms is embedded with the rest of our engineering organization. We see them as a team member, instead of packaging tasks to them.

What did you find most impressive about Vakoms?

Vakoms was able to source affordable candidates at a very affordable cost, ramping them quickly when we needed it and for the technology that we required.

We were initially working with a project manager from Vakoms' side. There were many issues with this approach, so we decided to fully embed their team, having the project managed internally. Vakoms' development was always good quality.

We had some in-house tech leads, but we needed to grow our team with additional developers and QA [quality assurance] engineers in order to develop faster.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We've had many different needs over the course of our 3-year collaboration. Vakoms has been very flexible, offering multiple skill sets in-house. We've been able to add and subtract people from our team on an as-needed basis.

We initially worked on native Mac OS desktop apps. Vakoms has also done front-end and backend work for us. In recent years, we've been working a lot with the Windows PC platform.

We made a post on Upwork (which was called Elance at the time). Vakoms was one of the companies that applied, so we interviewed them. Before this, we'd gone through many single freelancers and smaller companies, which was a challenge. The level of skills and knowledge always varied. What's nice about Vakoms is that they have a selection of developers. If we weren't satisfied with someone's performance or needed a more advanced skillset, it was very easy to ask them for it. This has helped us adapt to market conditions and to our development needs.

We have been working with Vakoms for a number of years, so we're obviously satisfied with their performance. One thing to note is that we have an internal tech and QA teams, which Vakoms has supplemented. As far as quality goes, Vakoms is on par with the market.

We don't measure ticket return rates or anything of that sort, but overall, we are happy with Vakoms.

How did Vakoms perform from a project management standpoint?

Our company has high standards; we make sure that we are releasing high-quality products. Vakoms has been responsive to our needs and followed our communication and documentation protocols.

What did you find most impressive about Vakoms?

There are many development companies, all offering essentially the same thing, so the choice boils down to factors of culture. Vakoms' team listens to us, and they're good to work with. Anytime we have a special need or request, they will be accommodating. Their transparent and honest personalities are Vakoms' biggest asset. We have high confidence in them as a business partner.

I can't cite anything major. Mistakes will happen, but Vakoms is good at listening and adjusting the course.

Our platform helps pharma and insurance companies reach certain goals. We have identified a gap in the interaction process with customers, from leads to actual patients, and have created a platform which can act as a community basis for people suffering from the same chronic ailments, using the same doctors or therapies, and so on. We allow companies to tailor how they target people through content, reaching out to them exactly when they need that kind of help or resource. We started out with a consumer-facing app for people with diabetes.

We needed fast and good-quality development, for a limited budget. We weren't looking for a turnkey collaboration, but rather for a team which could work with us for a long time and understand our company's needs. We wanted to improve the platform as we grew. Things can change with startups, and we may come to realize that our current solution isn't what we need.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We started our work with Vakoms using one iOS developer. I was in charge of the server-side code and worked with him on implementing the app according to our architecture designs. In time, we increased our team size up to 3 iOS engineers, plus Android and server resources.

How did you come to work with Vakoms?

I was looking for a long-time partner and built my own selection process. We allocated a portion of the budget just to finding and testing developers. I found Vakoms on either Elance or oDesk and gave them a small project which could be done in 2-3 hours. I also looked up the profiles of the people assigned to our project. Vakoms is based in Ukraine, while we're in Israel, so being in our time zone was a big plus. Good English communication was also important. We have looked at other companies in Ukraine, India, and Romania, but the communication with Vakoms was the most fluent. They answered my questions promptly, the price was right, and I had a good conversation with Vakoms' founder.

When we started working with Vakoms, we came to some scheduling issues with the resources we were using. We had a certain roadmap, which was set off when someone in their team became unavailable for a month. I talked about this with Vakoms' principal, who was able to find a system which works for us.

In my spare time, I create mobile apps. Some I develop myself, others I outsource. The app I worked with Indeema on is called EnVision. It's a photo editing app that combines the capabilities of several of the photo editing apps that are already out there.

I had them do a small test project, and once they successfully completed that, I immediately them to work on EnVision for me.

It wrapped up at the end of May [2015]. The project lasted about two and a half or three months.

What have been the results of the project? Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

Overall, it's reached the 68th spot in the photo and video section in the iTunes App Store, and that's without doing any marketing yet. I haven't had any bug issues or crash issues, so the quality aspect has been great as well. I'm happy with what we've been able to do.

What distinguishes Indeema Software from other providers?

What impressed me the most was how thorough Indeema Software was. After we had a discussion about the app, they would come back to me with a list of everything that they got from the conversation, what needed to be executed, and what the timeline was. Their project management was phenomenal to go along with being the best programmers I've ever worked with.

Every now and again, they would send me a build that would have a couple bugs in it. I would let them know where it was, and they got it fixed right away.

The collaboration resulted in a more scalable and reliable DRMS platform capable of supporting growing distributed energy operations and OpenADR integrations. Infrastructure stability, monitoring visibility, deployment consistency, and distributed event processing capabilities improved significantly throughout the engagement, helping us strengthen the platform for long-term utility-scale growth.
