We're an advertising firm based in Marina del Rey [California]. We're focused on considered, large purchases for the home. We work with everything from solar panels and mattresses to mortgages and modernist furniture. We cover any kind of big-ticket item for the home. We've been around since 2003.

What is your role and responsibilities?

I'm director of digital marketing.

What was your goal for working with Ignite Visibility?

We white label SEO [search engine optimization] projects through them. The goal is to provide our clients with industry best practices and processes and usually the results come in line with the first two items.

[It included] organic SEO, paid search, email, and in-house. We keep it low in the funnel. We partner with really good agencies and Ignite has been our go-to for as long as they've been around.

What was your process for selecting Ignite Visibility with which to work?

We vetted out between six and 10 firms. We were impressed with John [Lincoln] and Krish [Coughran, the founders]. We were one of their first clients.

Can you give a sense of the size of the initiative in dollar terms or a personnel work-hour figure?

It was from $50,000 to $200,000.

When was the work completed?

It's ongoing work.

Do you have any statistics or metrics to track improvement from the project?

For example, we work with a retail chain that has 33 different locations throughout southern California. I challenged Ignite to do a major overhaul of all those locations with the goal of optimizing them to the point of diminishing returns. 

Five months in, we doubled the search referrals. It was very plainly attributable to their efforts. For another client in what's been a tough climate the past two years, they've kept their organic referrals increasing 20 percent to 30 percent year over year and that's through two major algorithm updates by Google. 

Are you satisfied with their performance?

Yes. Definitely. Beyond even results that can be highly variable for SEO, I've always been impressed with their process, organization, and responsiveness. I've found that to be paramount. 

Is there anything unique or special about Ignite Visibility that really makes them stand out compared to other business partners?

There's always three legs for dealing with any vendor or client: smarts, good people, and responsive. I can usually work with any one of those three. If you have zero, I'm not going to be able to work with you. Ignite is very sharp, very nice and has a great process and responsiveness. They have all three legs.

What advice would you give to future clients of theirs?

I would say get ready to be responsive yourself. I found that I've been the limiting the speed of the project by responding too slowly. To the extent a client can dedicate resources to be responsive back to Ignite and the work they're doing, that will make the engagement much more successful.

Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or that you might do differently?

Translating their subject matter expertise into a more scalable offering for themselves would grow their business quicker. The nature of the work they do is so high touch that it can be difficult to turn on a dime and implement really sophisticated processes. If they could speed that up and make it more scalable within their own company, I think they'll be even more successful than they are now.

We’re a health care training company in Southern California. We have three locations: two in Orange County and one in Riverside County. We teach all different types of health care classes to individuals, hospitals, universities, and corporations.

What was your goal for working with Ignite Visibility?

We wanted to get ahead of our industry, and we thought SEO [search engine optimization] was going to be one of the best ways to do that. The work started by optimizing our site and just helping us stay on the cutting edge of all the different changes online, especially with local optimization. Health care training and CPR training is something that is very specific, because in our area people will only go to places that they can drive to. So, local traffic was going to be key for us.

We use them for SEO and PPC [pay per click], and that alone has been a huge help for us. As I was growing the business, I was managing it myself, and it just became such a drain to try to stay on top of where the industry was going. We had different writers that were writing our blogs as we went along. We’ve brought that all under the Ignite umbrella, and since then it’s been so much easier. We’re currently working on a site redesign that we’re hoping will revolutionize the industry.

What was your process for selecting Ignite Visibility with which to work?

We didn’t do a formal RFP [request for proposal] process. I’ve known John Lincoln [co-owner and vice president of Ignite Visibility] for a while now, and I’ve been following his work in the industry. It was an easy choice to go with him. As our business grew, I knew that SEO was going to be an important part of that. I started calling around and talking to different SEO companies, doing as much research as I could on the industry to figure out who the best partner would be.

There are a lot of horror stories out there about SEO companies, so trust was the biggest thing. Ignite Visibility had the technical experience to get the job done, but they also had the company values that aligned with ours, which I knew would make them a good long-term partner. Those values were what ultimately led me toward Ignite.

It was from $50,000 to $200,000.

The project is ongoing. We’re going on our third year now.

Do you have any statistics, metrics, or general feedback from the project?

One of our content pieces got picked up and is being shared internationally now by some major health care companies in Asia, so that was exciting. Our online presence has increased dramatically since we started with them. Our cost per acquisition has gone down substantially with our pay per click since they started managing that for us. Our conversion rates have gone up, and our organic traffic has increased a lot.

They help us out with social media as well. They’ve helped us grow our fan base on Facebook, and they’ve been working hard to get more Yelp reviews and push more traffic that way. Their PPC side and their project managers for our SEO are all working hand in hand with the designers, so that we can optimize the website in a way that’s going to be most effective to increase our conversion rates and sales.

I really like that we have a project manager, we have weekly calls, and they keep everything really organized by using Basecamp. They link up with our vision of where we’re trying to go with our company, and it’s been a great partnership. As far as investments go in our business, it’s probably the top three of everything we do.

Is there anything unique about them that really makes them stand out, compared to other companies?

I like their leadership. I feel they’ve got strong leadership, and that’s always important when you’re trying to pick a partner for the long term. We take a lot of pride in our company culture, and we look for companies that have cultures that mirror our own. I think that they’ve done that at Ignite, and we’re happy to align ourselves with people that have similar values and goals.

Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or something that you might do differently?

Honestly, I wish I would have started sooner.

What advice would you give a future client of theirs?

Make sure you vet the company that you’re looking for you, so you can find one that has those morals and values that can help you grow and not take advantage of you.

What was your goal for working with Ignite Visibility?

We had problems with the Google penalty, like a lot of people had in 2012, so their team helped us get straightened out with some bad links. Ignite Visibility did a good job with Google disavow, and disavowed a bunch of links that a former SEO [search engine optimization] firm had built that were really shoddy and spammy.

We had a severe penalty, and we probably lost 70 percent of traffic to our three sites, and Ignite got them all straightened out. Now, we’re just on a consistent content publishing track for SEO purposes.

John [Lincoln, Ignite Visibility’s co-owner and president of SEO and social] is good with all the mechanical SEO work, the on-page stuff, and making sure you have all of the on-page SEO you can possibly get in the right place formatted correctly.

They have a good eye for that level of the code. They have a fantastic content team. They can become experts in any topic very quickly. That seems to have worked really well for us. Ignite Visibility produces a lot of content for us and distributes it, brands it, and gets it all across the Web, which gives us more authority in the eyes of Google and their algorithm.

What was your process for selecting Ignite Visibility with which to work?

John is the son of a friend of a friend. We were at dinner about five years ago, and he told me his son was getting into SEO. I know his dad’s a standup guy and well respected. I think in 2012 or 2013, John started his own firm. I contacted him and told him I was in trouble with Google, and I needed to get it straightened out.

It was from $200,000 to $1 million.

It has been since about 2012, and I was their first customer.

We’ve had consistent growth month on month, year on year, quarter on quarter, and we’re happy with Ignite Visibility’s performance.

They’re a competent team, and John is smart as a whip. His people are all good, dedicated and they work hard. They’re well organized, which is great for me because I like nice and tidy reports and constant reporting. They’ve been awesome. They really just amaze me every step of the way.

Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or something that you might do differently?

I can’t really think of anything to suggest.

I would just say to trust Ignite Visibility because they are doing things correctly.
