I’m the director of Van Holdings (Pty) Ltd. We are a South African investment business that is constantly looking for new and existing projects that aim to impact various fields.

What challenge were you trying to address with Hyperlink InfoSystem?
I was interested in coming up with an augmented reality game, but I had a very broad spectrum of what I was looking for the game to do. As long as the app was able to function seamlessly with augmented reality, and performed well as a platform, I would be satisfied. We don't really have a lot of augmented reality apps in general — let alone games, so we needed to find someone that could do the job.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
I was interested in combining a Pokemon Go-type game using augmented reality and GPS coordinates and integrate it with hunting. The game would allow people to come in contact with the rarest and most dangerous animals from around the planet, using the latest augmented reality technology to place these wild animals right outside a gamer’s front door, school, shopping center, or anywhere else they may be.
We bounced ideas back and forth, and they took care of the design process from there going forward. The app was built for iOS and Android. I generally was in contact with the project manager and the lead developer of the project, and then spoke once or twice with the CEO.
How did you come to work with Hyperlink InfoSystem?
I'd done quite a bit of research on app development companies before I started the process. I found Hyperlink through a Google search; I typed in “top augmented reality app companies” and they were listed second or third. I also stumbled upon a magazine that reviewed mobile games, and they were recommended in it. The reviews that I had followed up on their website claimed that they were very advanced with augmented reality apps.
I reached out to them and they were speedy in their response, professional in their approach, and accommodated any queries or concerns I had. They seemed to grasp the objective of where I wanted the game to go, so we followed the process from there.

What is the status of this engagement?
I reached out to them in August last year [2016], and the project wrapped up at the end of May [2017]. We launched on June 1st. They’re providing free 3-month support after the launch of the app.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?
The quality of their deliverables was great and always above expected. We sometimes missed each other on the idea, but that's from just interpreting what's on the emails and was quickly fixed. I've seen very few games with the level of quality that the one they’ve produced has.
VirtuHunt has successfully been launched as the world’s first augmented reality hunting game. It is quickly climbing the ranks in the App and Play Stores. Currently, we have about 1,700 downloads on Android and over 500 on Apple in just over a week. It’s had a lot of great reviews — only positive feedback regarding gameplay, graphics, and overall excitement. There are no reviews yet on the iOS platform since it's still very fresh to iOS. It's been on Android for about 2 weeks longer.
The overall success of the app remains to be seen. Obviously, no one is going to type in the name of our game without knowing about it. We’ve just finished our advert in New York, which I'll start advertising tomorrow, and that will have a great impact on the success of the game.
How did Hyperlink InfoSystem perform from a project management standpoint?
We had a slight communication barrier when I started working with them because they had quite a strong accent over the phone. Once everything started running on email, they were very quick at responding. Besides email, we spoke over Skype and WhatsApp.
What did you find most impressive about Hyperlink InfoSystem?
The main benefit of working with Hyperlink was the value for money. For the amount that I've paid them compared to what I received as a product, it's far surpassed the value.

Our company was created to lower the overall cost of health insurance for patients. At the same time, we wanted to improve the quality of care through the creation of a simple app. For a minimal cost, we put doctors in patients’ homes within an hour. The app allows patients to see which doctors are available in their neighborhoods. Patients can pay ahead for services and book appointments. The app is supposed to be a place where doctors can moonlight and offer their services for a very discounted price. Since being close to patients lowers the overhead, everything is based on geolocation. The doctor app alerts users about appointment requests, which they can either accept or deny. Doctors can use the app to review symptoms. Once an appointment is accepted, they can go to patients’ homes for consultations. After this, the patients and doctors can rate each other. I'm a co-founder of the company.

What challenge were you trying to address with Hyperlink InfoSystem?
We wanted to address several health care challenges. First, we wanted to lower health care costs for patients as well as overhead expenses for doctors. We also wanted to avoid the unnecessary cost associated with unnecessary emergency room visits as well as decrease a patient’s waiting time for minor ailments. By creating a virtual health care environment, we hoped to improve the doctor-patient relationship.
We needed help with developing the application and integrating it with the website. We had a shell in place, but we needed someone who could develop and test it. It had to be a viable product.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
Hyperlink InfoSystem developed our system. We worked with a total of six people from Hyperlink’s iOS and Android teams, including their main developer. Although I am familiar with some aspects of coding, I’m a novice so I can’t provide many technical details. We needed the app to be stable, user-friendly, and widely usable. It needed to have common elements like a five-star rating system and a login process. Although it would be a new product, I needed users to have familiar features.
How did you come to work with Hyperlink InfoSystem?
I visited a lot of developer blogs to discover who the leading people were. Around 1–1 ½ years ago, Hyperlink was one of the top app development companies. They have multiple products out on iOS and Android. I started reading the comments of their clients, and everything was positive. Hyperlink was able to deliver on time, within the specs required, and at the right price.

So far, the cost of Hyperlink InfoSystem’s work has been around $20,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
The project started in May 2016, and the app was done by May 2017. There are additional modifications to come.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?
I’d never worked with a foreign company before, so I was apprehensive about how things would work out. Fortunately, Hyperlink met or exceeded our expectations every time. The app works to our liking. Although the preliminary reviews look very promising, it is still too early to provide any metrics.
We’re very excited about the app’s potential growth. We found out that insurance companies also need this service. Given this information, we believe that the service will become larger than we had ever expected.
How did Hyperlink InfoSystem perform from a project management standpoint?
We used Skype for communication, and it continues to be an essential tool for our project. The language barrier was an issue at the beginning. Once we became accustomed to their tone of voice, accents, and mannerisms, we were fine. We extended the project from six months to one year because we started adding features. While Hyperlink missed several deadlines within that year, the product itself was delivered on time.
What did you find most impressive about Hyperlink InfoSystem?
They always met our expectations. If we were unhappy with their work, Hyperlink’s entire team worked after hours to fix things and make sure that everything was to our liking.
Are there any areas Hyperlink InfoSystem could improve?
This is only a minor point, but it would have been nice to be introduced to the coding team before the project started—just to know their first names and their contribution to the work. Eventually, I did get to know the team better.
Also, We wanted to do a couple of things with the app design, but the technology wasn’t there. If it was, it came at a very high cost and required many hours to get right. For example, we couldn’t put the patient and doctor sides together because of size limitations. Whoever the user was, they would only be using half of the app. Otherwise, it would have been too convoluted. As a result, we currently have 4 mobile applications, 2 each for Android and iOS devices. However, both versions use the same script. If both versions of the app were loaded on the same phone, they’d be competing with each other. In this situation, the app doesn’t function as fast as I want it to. It’s not likely that a patient would load the doctor app as well, or vice versa, but it’s something to consider. We’ll take care of this issue in the next versions.

Being able to have direct communication with the founder is important, and their level of client satisfaction is high. What was the scope of their involvement?
Hyperlink InfoSystem built both the iOS and Android application consisting of two apps for drivers and two apps for passengers. They built the framework for the apps and did the design as well. It was a fully customized application with a lot of out-of-scope work. We didn’t want just to launch an app that was a carbon copy of one that was already on the market. I needed to communicate what we wanted in our app. We have now contracted Hyperlink InfoSystem for ongoing maintenance and support.

I like that better because we need to move quickly. We use basic documents as checklists to keep tasks organized.

The owner is also very engaged and approachable in the business. I don’t think I’ve ever worked with a business where the owner gave me his number and I can contact him any time of the day if I have any issues.

It’s good to be very clear in the requirements when you have customized features. I think that’s probably common when you’re crossing language and cultural barriers. The project manager and I make sure that we know what the other person is trying to communicate.

This app is made for all users – our customers, staff members, hotel managers, and administrators. Customers can use this app to check the layout of the hotel. For example, if they would like to gym or spa, then they can use this app to search for their destination. Customers can also use this app to order all services like food and room cleaning. They can even chat and video call our hotel manager. Customers can also book a specific time slot for room cleaning service. This request goes to all nearby room cleaners, and the available resource can accept the request. It also helps in managing requests and saves a lot of time for room cleaners.
This app has helped our customers to get more personalized service and helped us to reduce our workload, resulting in a reduction – in some part – of our operational costs. Customers can also give reviews to specific hotel departments. Our staff members use this app to take orders and deliver them to correct room. They can even use this app to get information about past orders and customer reviews. Finally, admin can use the app to provide instruction to staff members and help customers.

Through our solution, drivers are no longer dedicated to specific locations, but simply go to whichever restaurants are the busiest. This has allowed to us cut down labor costs by 30%.
How did Hyperlink Infosystem perform from a project management standpoint?
We have worked with Hyperlink Infosystem's project manager for any changes we needed to make. We typically send specs to Hyperlink Infosystem's team, they review our work, and we discuss it. The collaboration has been good.
We didn't use any particular project management tools. I simply email ideas in layman's terms to Hyperlink Infosystem, given that I'm not a programmer.

We are one of the largest companies in the world that is performing TV and online audience research. We are finding out what kind of people are consuming various media like TV or online, and providing this information to the industry.
I am the global digital director, meaning I’m taking care of the digital side of things, so enriching TV audiences with what now is video. Non-standard platforms are contributing more and more to the audiences and sometimes bring very specific audiences to classical TV.

We had worked with a freelancer on the development of a software that we are using to identify panelists that are willing to give us some information on the social demographics. That software allowed us to find them in a vast big data set so we can see something about their specific usage. We worked with a freelancer and we had found ourselves in a situation where that relationship went pretty foul, pretty rapidly because he had other priorities and we needed someone who would pick up the pieces of that project, put it back together, and drive it forward.

I don’t really remember. I remember surfing across a number of sites. I think, when we started out with Harnil [Oza, Founder] and his guys, they were significantly smaller than they are nowadays.

What is the status of this engagement?
It has been completed. We’ve undergone a significant structural change. We have made several acquisitions, including companies that have substantial resources in mobile development. At a pertinent time, Harnil and the team were asked to hand it over, which they did without any grudge or without putting up any resistance. They were quite helpful in doing so and are continuing to do so. Even now, we can come back to them with questions and they’re being answered right away, and I haven’t seen an invoice for them yet.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?
It was rolled out successfully in a number of markets that we serve, like the UK, Denmark, Switzerland, and others. It was rolled out internationally. It has been quite a success story.
What did you find most impressive about Hyperlink InfoSystem?
I think it was their flexibility. I had worked with other outsourcing partners before. Sometimes it’s hard to find someone who’s very good at requirement capture. I found them very good at that. Also, we were challenged a couple of times on the requirements. So we were working in a waterfall model. I think their flexibility or their willingness and ability to adapt what we actually wanted to achieve was great. Sometimes I, or others, have pretty strong ideas on how things should be achieved and they weren’t shy to let us know when they thought we were going astray. That was very good. In some parts, they took on of a more trusted advisory role than just someone who is merely just being an outsourced development resource. My former experiences with some of those are that if you tell them to hammer a square peg into a round hole, they would do that all day long without questioning you. That was never the case with Harnil and his team. Of course, there are some cultural idiosyncrasies and some cultural differences, but we were aware of those. When you’re aware of those, they prove to be very good partners.
Are there any areas Hyperlink InfoSystem could improve?
I do think in terms of making sure results are being written down and keeping accurate notes of what is being said. Sometimes, I had the feeling they weren’t too good at that. It didn’t have any negative impact on the product in the end, but in some ways, sometimes it led to a lengthier process until we got to where we wanted. They need proper notes and proper minutes of a meeting. They have improved on that over the course of the project, which was more than two years ago now.

I also provide an on-demand grocery delivery in our app. I wanted to expand my business, and currently, I am in talks with some big companies to expand my app services.
