We used Elixirator as staff augmentation engineers. They were embedded with our internal developers and worked with us on over 50 two-week sprints over the duration of the contract.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Not only can I look at the number of user stories and tasks completed b y the Elixirator developers, but they were also key players in onboarding new developers who were less familiar with the programming language. Those developers are still using Elixir to this day, even though some of them have moved on to other companies.

Elixirator's management team was very involved in the early days of the project, making sure the right people were assigned to our project.  Once the project was well underway, I had monthly one-on-ones with our account representative to ensure everything was running smoothly.  Our internal project management, product, and engineering leadership teams were responsible for setting sprint priorities and managing schedules.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

We work in a rather unique domain and essentially "threw them into the deep end to see if they can swim."  They all swam beautifully.

Are there any areas for improvement or something Elixirator could have done differently?

It did take a little while at the start of the project to find the right people for our specific domain. There was a little bit of churn with personell while we were ramping the project up.  Once the right team was assembled, though,  everything went smoothly and any potential rough spots were quicklyu worked out with our account rep.

Main deciding factor was Elixirator's good references and their expertise on Elixir.

They provided us initially with 2 developers but we eventually downscaled the team to just 1. In particular the developer that stayed during the whole project duration implemented features in our backoffice backend systems autonomously with little support from the team technical lead. She learned quickly our tech stack and the codebase and became one of the key team contributors within a few months after joining.

We described our project and we were provided a shortlist of candidates. We interviewed them an selected the 2 that we considered to be a best fit.

Can you share any outcomes from the engagement that demonstrate progress or success?

With the support of the Elixirator dev that stayed with us for longer time we were able to release many features in our backoffice tool which enabled us to scale up our booking operations very significantly. We had a 3X growth in terms of reservations being managed in our platform during this period of time.

The Elixirator team member worked as another team member, no difference with any of our in-house developers.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Elixirator was very flexible whenever we needed to scale up or down the team. They were honest and committed to delivering value to their customers, and it always felt like a partnership rather than a seller-buyer relationship.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Elixirator has transformed our product from being an idea to a workable solution that has been launched publicly. They’ve been very supportive of our team — they are hugely important in getting us off the ground and helping us develop the product’s architecture in the beginning. 

How did Elixirator perform from a project management standpoint?

Elixirator is great at project management. Their communication skills have been really good; their engineers are incredibly responsive. They meet with us through Zoom daily, and we use Slack and Asana to collaborate. We’re satisfied with their productivity in general, and the project has gone smoothly.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We consider Elixirator’s engineers part of our team — we’ve developed good personal relationships with them. They’ve been very proactive and attentive in ensuring everything is going well. Anytime we have questions, they accommodate us. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can’t think of anything. We’ve been delighted with our partnership.

For what projects/services did your company hire Elixirator, and what were your goals?

Elixirator is helping us develop our main product (a web app built in Elixir and React). They are augmenting our core product development teams to help us scale the company faster.

How did you select Elixitor and what were the deciding factors?

We stumbled upon Elixirator on LinkedIn (actually, they reached out to us). We're using Elixir, which is a niche technology. It was a huge plus for us that they are specializing in Elixir and have several experienced Elixir developers.

We also liked how flexible they are and their rates are very good. And their developers are usually more senior than in many other software houses.

Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.

We started by giving Elixirator a few well-defined projects. They did all the development work (both backend and frontend) but with detailed task breakdown and code reviews done by our core team engineers. We were happy about our collaboration, so after some time we changed the model, and now Elixirator engineers no longer work on the side but we included them in our core teams.

They are now an integral part of our teams and participate in the whole process (research, ideation, planning, development) on the same terms as our regular, in-house engineers.

Five people. Frontend, backend, and full-stack developers.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

One very tangible outcome was completing a project targeting our key customer. It was delivered with good quality and on time, to the great satisfaction of our customer (we got a lot of praise from the customer and our further collaboration is thriving).

Apart from that, Elixirator engineers are working primarily on our core product offering, augmenting our in-house teams, so they contribute to our overall success as a company.

They are open to adapting to our tools and processes. We work in cross-functional teams, with a very agile process: the teams are fully autonomous and tasked with generating business value not just building a list of features.

The teams are participating in the whole product discovery and ideation process, not only the delivery part. We work remotely, but also due to the very collaborative nature of our teams, we do a lot of ideation via direct communication tools like video calls, virtual whiteboards, and so on. Regarding project management style, this is mostly on our side.

But Elixirator is very open and responsive in communication with us regarding our staffing needs, feedback about their engineers, etc.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Surely, their focus on and expertise in Elixir is unique (though they're expanding also to more technologies recently). The most impressive is their flexibility and openness to help in any way they can, no matter if it is a project, an ongoing work, how many developers we need, or what's the timeline.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

We've noticed at the beginning that Elixirator developers expect a bit more guidance from a project manager than we usually provide to our in-house developers (we expect our core team members to be extremely self-managing). But this was more noticeable for a few initial projects when Elixirator devs were working alone.

After we embedded them into our regular teams, everything is going smoothly. And also, for more standalone projects, Elixirator offers support from project managers on their side (which we didn't use, hence the additional management effort on our side).

We were trying to scale up as quickly as possible — we wanted to augment our growing engineering team to build up our product rapidly to serve our market.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Elixirator augments our engineering team, and their staff operates just like any other member of our team. We put together a roadmap for development, and we split the work between our internal team and Elixirator. 

Our code is in React on the frontend, and the backend is run in Python. My internal team develops the wireframes and mockups related to the frontend UX, and then Elixirator executes them. 

We have teammates from Elixirator working on our system's back- and frontend — their teammates are contributing code to the platform. They also are helping build a SaaS platform for our AI customers. 

What is the team composition?

The team fluctuates between 3–4 teammates, roughly split between back- and frontend developers. Our main contact is Artem (Head of Projects & Operations), who manages their team and our business relationship. 

How did you come to work with Elixirator?

I was referred to Elixirator by a friend, one of the most talented engineers I've ever met. I liked the idea of working with a team like Elixirator, but I was a bit apprehensive because I needed to trust them to handle my product correctly. 

However, the fact that my friend recommended them and thought highly of them was the mark of trust I needed and I began working with Elixirator. 

How much have you invested with them?

We've spent close to $250,000 with Elixirator so far. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working with Elixirator in September 2020 and our partnership is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Elixirator helps us produce more code in a given amount of time. Generally, we measure their success based on the speed and quality of their execution of our frontend designs. 

For the backend, we also measure the quality of the execution, specifically ensuring there are no bugs in the code, so that when it deploys, it doesn't break things elsewhere. 

Elixirator has really been a partner in helping build our business. 

How did Elixirator perform from a project management standpoint?

Elixirator is great at project management — we've had to work around the time difference, but we've been happy. We generally use Asana and ClickUp to communicate, along with a ticketing system. 

Whenever we need to scale the team up or down, we contact Artem. If we have any issues with an individual teammate from Elixirator, he helps them improve their performance or replaces that team member. Artem is responsive and remediates issues quickly — they're a team of problem solvers. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

They are an extension of us: Elixirator is a fantastic partner. They're great, responsive partners who are very thoughtful about their work. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

I don't have any input. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

My biggest piece of advice is about the time difference. The better the customer's ability to communicate efficiently, the better and more effective the partnership is. Find ways to overlap during the workday — it usually requires both teams working outside a typical 9 a.m.–5 p.m. workday.

What challenge were you trying to address with Elixirator?

We were working with one of our clients, a bakery, to develop a digital system for taking orders. They were working with an order book, but it was hard when they were getting a lot of orders and they lost a lot of time.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They programmed the inventory and order management system according to the customer’s specifications. They used Node.js and Postgres for the front- and backend of the application. 

The application allows our client to input future orders from their customers. Each day, the app generates a list of orders to go out that day. There’s also integration with an online ordering system. The client can go to one system to get all the orders; the ones they created themselves and the ones that come from customers online.

What is the team composition?

We worked with a project manager, a frontend developer, a backend developer, and the owner. The project manager helped me with creating invoices and billing information for our client. 

How did you come to work with Elixirator?

I worked with them on another project several years ago. It was a no-brainer to choose them again.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent around €12,000 (approximately $12,835).

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in November 2019, and we wrapped up the project in January 2020.

The customer is really happy with the results. It saves them a lot of time and money.

How did Elixirator perform from a project management standpoint?

It was a good collaboration between the two companies. We primarily communicated via Slack. When there were issues or questions from the customer, I brought them to the project manager and they gave me the answers I needed.

I believe they used Trello to track the project. We had biweekly meetings with the customer to provide progress updates, and then our internal team communicated with Elixirator if there were any changes that needed to be made.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I found their direct communication to be most impressive. If I had a question about anything, they could quickly give me an answer. If they didn’t have an answer, they would get in touch with the developer or someone else who would be able to provide an answer.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I really liked how they worked. The company is small, but their team is extremely capable.

I’m the manager of Earth, a solar company based in Belgium. People can rent solar panels from us.

What challenge were you trying to address with Elixirator?

Digitalization is extremely important for us. We partially developed our own sales tool and CRM but needed additional help. It’s a crucial part of our business because it allows us to maximize the number of customers we can handle with our internal team.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Their team started from our code base, taking out a lot of bugs and improving security. They moved everything from Blaze to React.

Within our partnership, I can request new features or report bugs, and they immediately have it in a priority list. They ask questions on how they should take care of it.

My main point of contact is Yuri (Project Manager). There’s also a remote developer.

How did you come to work with Elixirator?

We were searching for options for whether to hire our own developers or an offshore company. We wanted someone who could easily communicate with our team in the business sense. Elixirator was recommended by a colleague of mine who had already worked with them.

I had a phone call with Artem (Head of Projects and Operations). We immediately felt that it was a good match for both of us.

Our ongoing engagement with Elixirator started in October 2019.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The team at Elixirator brought our systems to the next level. They made it ready for a large number of people to use the platform. We can have 5,000 proposal requests, and it won’t crash. Generating PDFS also goes faster than before.

Our main success has been with a decrease in bugs. In the past, everything was falling apart, and we couldn’t use the software. Now, everyone is happy with the software.

In the future, if we have multiple developers working on it and something breaks down within the code, we will immediately know what’s happening. That’s a big value that their team brought.

We plan to expand our collaboration with additional programmers so we can split their work between the sales tool and CRM. Perhaps in the very far future, we’ll have a third system.

How did Elixirator perform from a project management standpoint?

Whenever there is a problem, I can go to Yuri. We set up weekly calls to give work updates. We use Slack, Google Hangouts, and Google Meetup. Sometimes we use Google Sheets for documentations. That allows us all to see different edits. We sometimes use an old-fashioned Word document or Excel file.

The developer has excellent communication skills, thinking along with our business. The entire team is open and transparent, making it a positive collaboration. If there’s a feature that we need in a short time, they put extra manpower on it and will work evenings and weekends.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their communication is excellent. Their team makes an effort to understand our business, what we do, our services, and how our operational flow works. If we ask for a feature, they think alongside us, putting in the extra effort to turn it around quickly. They will counter and ask the right questions to get the best feature.

Along with being hardworkers, the team at Elixirator is young and dynamic.

If I had to search for something, I’d say that they could try to understand the business a bit faster at the beginning of an engagement.
