We were looking to develop an MVP for our mobile application.

What was the scope of their involvement?

CarbonCode Solutions Ltd developed an MVP of our Android and iOS customer-facing mobile application and managed the entire process. Additionally, they developed an Android app that functions as a terminal that links the customer to the venue and a web app for the restaurants to see their orders and run financial reports. They also helped us source our payment API.

CarbonCode Solutions Ltd used React Native for mobile development. The MVP they developed was launched in August 2021, and we’re currently in the third release that they’ve also developed.

For this project, we worked with CarbonCode Solutions Ltd from March–August 2021. However, they continue to provide hosting and technical support services for us.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Currently, the mobile app has over 3,500 active users and supports over 10 venues. We’re ready to scale and support more users and restaurants. Overall, CarbonCode Solutions Ltd exceeded my expectations.

How did CarbonCode Solutions Ltd perform from a project management standpoint?

CarbonCode Solutions Ltd met deadlines and stayed on budget. We used Microsoft Teams to communicate. For project management, we used monday.com and TestFlight to share the UI. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

I was impressed by CarbonCode Solutions Ltd’s understanding of startups since they’re a startup. I don’t have a tech background, and CarbonCode Solutions Ltd was great at understanding my business and translating it into a mobile app. 

They grew and brought in new staff when we worked together. I was concerned about project management, but CarbonCode Solutions Ltd never dropped the ball with our project. Overall, they genuinely cared about our project, and I felt we were in a partnership.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can’t think of anything for CarbonCode Solutions Ltd to improve.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I recommend you do as much scoping of the project as you can. CarbonCode Solutions Ltd was great at understanding our needs, although I wish I’d come in more prepared since I didn’t completely understand how to develop a mobile app.

We needed help with custom software development for our company.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

CarbonCode Solutions Ltd provides us with internal and external employees, which they employ and manage for us, to take on custom software development tasks using C# and AWS, among other technologies. Currently, the main focus is picking up and finishing the development of a software solution we had to pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which also involves collaborating with our AWS team. To jumpstart that process, they went through a full handover process with the previous team building the system.

In addition, they’re looking after our apps’ performance within the App Store and Google Play store for mobile and desktop versions.

In terms of features, the software, called Jobmate, is aimed at managing small businesses, including initial customer contact, creating a quote, winning and creating a job, adding purchased items, invoicing, employee and management, and CRM, among other functionalities. We refer to it as a micro ERP system.

So far, we’ve been working with three members of their team, including Jay (CEO), Louis (Co-Founder), and a senior developer.

How much money have you invested in this partnership?

So far, we’ve invested around £1 million (approximately $1.1 million USD) with them.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in June 2022, and the engagement is still ongoing — hopefully, this partnership will last forever!

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They’ve been doing great work so far regarding learning the software, doing bug fixes, and taking on a new development sprint to expand the feature list of the platform. Overall, it’s been a seamless process.

How did CarbonCode Solutions Ltd perform from a project management standpoint?

Project management is excellent. They’re great at giving meetings and holding regular meetings to keep us updated, so working with them is very transparent — they even let us know when there’s a problem rather than hiding it from us.

In terms of tools, we use monday.com.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re very knowledgeable on AWS cloud technologies.

Are there any areas they could improve?

So far, I don’t think there’s anything they can improve on because they’ve been good.

They’re a very open company that listens to the customers’ needs, so be communicative to avoid delays and be aware of any upcoming situation.

We were looking to move away from a paper-based operation, so we needed someone to provide us with mobile app development.

What was the scope of their involvement?

CarbonCode Solutions is helping us build an iOS and Android app where all our testing can be done remotely.

We started with a discussion about what we do and where we’d like to go, and they’ve gone through the development process step by step since the initial conversation. We’re currently in the final stages of trialing the app.

We work in a niche area of tax reliefs and funding. There are lots of CRM's available but none that work for our processes or way of working with clients for multiple years past and present. We wanted the ability to have 1 system that our sales, marketing, financial analysts could all work on together to eliminate ad-hoc systems.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

We spotted an advert someone else had put on social media requesting bespoke software and saw dozens of responses all generic and quite obvious. Then I spotted a response from carboncode that actually took time to understand the brief and not only explain how they could achieve what they wanted but suggest ideas for improvements.

It wasn't "salesy" it was honest. I reached out and asked them for a quote which was really reasonable for a start up and since then they have helped us at each step where we have grown.

Our project is a labour of love, as our business continues to grow and evolve so does our system. We explained the big picture and then broke it down in to manageable chunks which allow us to budget. Every month, we spend a set amount, we receive set dev days and work through our objectives. This allows us to test everything on an ongoing basis and any suggestions for future or ideas can be implemented quickly.

To be honest, it is a team effort, we have a dedicated contact who is one of the directors, as well as a dedicated lead dev (also a director) and then their team pitch in to hit deadlines, add specialist expertise etc.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

The project is very ambitious, especially when trying to manage this in stages which carboncode can deliver. There is the occasional snag or bug but this gets fixed very quickly. Without this system, our business wouldn't of grown as quickly as it has and I know that there is nothing like this on the market so our competitors have pain points we have avoided.

This project is now the foundation for other systems we have integrated such as client portals, partner portals as well as plugins for Xero and Quickbooks.

Communication is fantastic, its easy to pick up the phone and speak to someone at pretty much any hour, we also communicate via email when necessary but what carboncode introduced is a dedicated monday.com board so we can add feedback, future ideas but more importantly we can see the scope, timeline and when aspects of dev are taking place.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

They are very personable, down to earth, and understanding. The price is in line with our budget, the product is amazing.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Not really, with software, you have to have realistic timelines and expect bugs for unknowns but this carboncode react and work on these straight away. I would say they do everything they can to make a perfect client system. I have even advised I don't need as many updates as they can provide because I trust everything is in hand.

We hired CarbonCode to fix a build of the application back end which was being developed by one of our team in Africa but beset with integration issues between the front end and back end. Initially they did a code review with a view to code rescue but on review they determined that there was nothing much salvageable and it needed a complete rewrite.

CC approached me on LinkdedIn and I had a couple of calls initially, liked their straightforward approach and how they approached the relationship, highly proactive and professional.

There was an initial 2 week analysis and scoping phase, detailing out the work to be done, out of which came the proposal, contract and plan/schedule for the development.

It was a small team of 2 devs with CTO doing some of the coding and providing the oversight.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

The back end solution was delivered on time, to budget, integrated to our smartphone app and all the issues resolved so we could go live and launch the alpha version to appstore and playstore as planned. Our community were positive about the release and it gave us a lot of traction.

We integrated CC into our regular team meeting process for weekly updates and used slack mainly for real time communications. CC are professionals and dont need a lot of babysitting, they get on with the job and only raise issues or concerns if they run into a blocking issue. So it was light touch and highly appreciated that we could sit back and let them work with limited input from our side.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

They took business outcomes and quality very seriously, fully supporting and engaging as if they are core part of Mpowa. Pleasant to work with , solution oriented, highly proficient developers and also commercially flexible and understanding of the challenges of startup life.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Very few. What they do they do extremely well and I could not fault their performance in any way. Our CTO Chris thought very highly of them too and attended their recent expo event in London to express our support and appreciation.
