    Onboarding at Catchword is structured but not bureaucratic. Once a project is greenlit, we move quickly into a defined sequence designed to align our team with yours before any creative work begins. The first step is contracting and project setup, which we keep tight: signed SOW, kickoff call scheduled, and a single point of contact named on each side. We assign a senior lead who owns the engagement end to end. You won't be handed off to junior staff after the pitch. From there, we move into discovery. Depending on the scope (naming, identity, verbal strategy, brand architecture, or a combination), discovery typically includes a kickoff workshop with your stakeholders, a review of any existing brand assets and research, competitive and category audits, and stakeholder interviews where appropriate. The goal is to understand your business, your audience, the strategic gap your brand needs to fill, and the internal dynamics that will shape decision-making. Discovery ends with a creative brief that we write and you approve. This document captures objectives, audience, positioning, tone, naming or identity criteria, must-haves, must-avoids, and the success measures we'll use to evaluate the work. Nothing moves forward until that brief is signed off, because it becomes the rubric we present against in every subsequent round. We also set logistics during onboarding: meeting cadence, presentation format, decision-makers and approvers, legal counsel involvement (especially for trademark work), and any internal stakeholders we should be looping in. For naming projects, we flag jurisdictions and classes early so trademark screening is scoped correctly. Most clients are pleasantly surprised by how much groundwork we lay before generating any names or design directions. That investment is deliberate. It's the reason our creative rounds tend to land closer to the mark and require fewer rounds than typical industry norms.

    Success in branding work is harder to quantify than in, say, paid media, so we use a combination of project-level measures and longer-term outcomes. We're transparent that brand value compounds over years, and we set expectations accordingly. At the project level, we measure success against the criteria laid out in the approved creative brief. For a naming engagement, that includes strategic fit, distinctiveness in category, linguistic and cultural soundness across relevant markets, trademark and domain availability at the level of risk the client has defined, and stakeholder alignment. For identity and verbal strategy, success means a system that is differentiated, ownable, scalable across touchpoints, and clearly tied to the positioning. We also track adoption. A name or identity is only successful if the client uses it. We measure how cleanly a recommendation moves from presentation to legal clearance to launch, and whether the client returns to us for adjacent work. Repeat engagements and referrals are our most honest signal that we delivered something the client trusted enough to build on. Beyond delivery, we look at post-launch indicators where the client shares them: recognition in industry press, awards, brand recall in customer research, internal team adoption (whether employees actually use the new language), and longevity. Some of our names have been in market for fifteen-plus years across acquisitions and rebrands, which we treat as a meaningful proof point. We're honest about what we don't claim credit for. A brand name doesn't generate revenue on its own. It removes friction, signals positioning, and gives marketing something distinctive to amplify. When prospective clients ask for revenue attribution, we explain that brand work creates leverage rather than direct lift, and we point them to proxies like adoption, clearance success, and client retention rather than overstating causation.

    We deliberately keep our concurrent client load lower than most agencies of comparable reputation. Catchword is structured around senior practitioners doing the work, not pyramids of junior staff executing under partner supervision. That model only holds if we protect the time of the people clients actually hired us for. At any given moment, we're typically running a handful of active engagements at varying stages. Some are in discovery, some in active creative development, some in trademark screening, some in final presentation prep. Staggering projects across phases lets us give each one full senior attention during its critical creative windows without overloading the team. Each engagement is assigned a senior lead who is genuinely accountable for outcomes. That person is in the room for every working session, not just kickoff and final presentation. We don't operate on a model where a principal sells the work and then disappears. If you hire Catchword, you get Catchword, not a rotating cast. We also cap the number of new projects we take on in any given quarter. This sometimes means asking prospective clients to wait a few weeks for the right start date rather than squeezing them into a schedule that would dilute the work. Most clients appreciate the candor. The ones with hard deadlines get a realistic conversation about what's feasible before we sign anything. The practical upside for clients: faster response times, deeper familiarity with your business from the people writing names or shaping strategy, and far fewer of the handoff errors that plague large agencies. The tradeoff is that we're not always immediately available, and we're upfront about that during initial conversations. We'd rather decline a project than take it on under conditions that would compromise quality.

    Turnaround depends on the scope, the category, and the level of stakeholder involvement on the client side, but we work to published norms and communicate timelines clearly upfront. A standard naming engagement typically runs eight to twelve weeks from kickoff to final recommendation, including discovery, brief development, two to three rounds of name development and refinement, internal Catchword screening, and preliminary trademark and linguistic checks. Highly regulated categories like pharmaceuticals run longer because of regulatory naming requirements and extended legal review. Tech and consumer projects can sometimes move faster when the client has a tight launch window and decision-making authority is concentrated. Identity and verbal strategy projects vary more widely. A focused verbal identity project (voice, messaging architecture, tagline) typically runs six to ten weeks. A full visual identity system with applications runs longer, usually twelve to sixteen weeks depending on the scope of deliverables. We're also realistic about what shortens or extends a timeline. The single biggest factor is the speed of client-side decisions. Projects where stakeholders are aligned and decision authority is clear tend to land on or ahead of schedule. Projects with shifting stakeholders, unclear approvers, or mid-stream strategy changes naturally take longer. We flag this honestly in scoping conversations. For rush work, we can sometimes accommodate compressed timelines, but we don't pretend the calendar is infinitely flexible. We'd rather have a candid conversation about what can be done well in your window than promise everything and underdeliver. If a true rush is required, we'll tell you what's possible, what's not, and what tradeoffs the compression introduces. Most clients tell us that what stands out isn't speed for its own sake but predictability: we say what we'll deliver and when, and we deliver it.

    We'll answer this candidly because it's a question worth taking seriously, and the honest version is more useful than a fabricated number. Direct ROI on a brand name or identity is difficult to isolate, because brand work doesn't generate revenue on its own. It creates leverage that other marketing, sales, and product activity then amplifies. Any agency that quotes you a specific revenue multiple from naming or identity is, to put it gently, working from a creative interpretation of attribution. We won't do that. What we can speak to is our success rate against the metrics that actually matter for this kind of work, and on those, our track record is exceptional. The clients we work with adopt the recommendations we deliver at a rate well above industry norms. Names we present typically clear trademark and linguistic screening at the risk level the client has scoped. Engagements close on time and on budget. And a substantial share of our business comes from repeat clients and direct referrals, which is the most honest proxy for whether the work delivered. Some specific proxies prospective clients tend to find useful: the percentage of projects that result in an adopted, launched recommendation (very high), the percentage of recommended names that survive trademark clearance with the client's preferred counsel, the proportion of clients who return for additional work within twenty-four months, and the longevity of names in market. We have names that have been in continuous use for over fifteen years across acquisitions, rebrands, and category expansions. We'd rather a prospective client walk in with realistic expectations than oversold ones. Brand work pays back over years, not quarters.
