Since some aspects of our project were quite complicated, we held several face-to-face meetings. I mainly interacted with the director, our account manager, and one of the developers.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

We have noticed many benefits with the system, although they’re hard to quantify. It has allowed us to make significant progress without having to take on any additional staff.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

Bird Limited always met the quarterly deliverables we discussed for the initial build. We had monthly meetings moving forward to discuss changes and feature requests.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Bird Limited has an impressive ability to turn anything we threw at them into a reality within a short period. At some points, we were making constant urgent feature requests. I can safely say the Bird Marketing team exceeded all expectations.

Are there any areas where they can improve?

We had servers in place, but they were quite adamant that it would be best to host the ERP system on their servers. We are extremely pleased with the performance and speed, however, even though it’s slightly more expensive.

We needed a website with e-commerce functionality, and as we have previously used Magento, Bird agreed it was a good fit. It was necessary to be able to integrate with our existing stock system to easily manage products and orders. We wanted the frontend designed with conversions in mind. SEO was also an important element of the scope, with keyword research and on-site optimization carried out.

We had an account manager and two designers/developers. A minor part of the project was the stock management integration so the team at Bird liaised directly with the software developers, which went smoothly.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

The results have exceeded our expectations and the KPIs set out at the start. Our analytics show a 300% increase in the number of conversions when compared to this time last year. This is probably due to a boost in organic traffic, in conjunction with the improved design.

There was good communication among all team members throughout the project. The speed of delivery matched our expectations and our teams collaborated exceptionally well.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Their knowledge of both web design and SEO is excellent. Their developers know all the SEO best practices, which made the whole project more efficient. I’m also very impressed with the on-going support we receive.

We needed to update our existing website.

What was the scope of their involvement?

To start, I gave them a brief of what needed to be updated and rebranded. Bird Marketing Limited created a new WordPress site. They created two different platforms as the website isn’t just for the UK but for our Australian arm as well. The site also is used to track data and business enquiries. They designed new navigation, imagery, and color scheme. They updated the privacy statement to be in line with new GDPR policies.

One of the main challenges was finding a way to use the company’s primary color. The strong green shade is not user-friendly for web display. They had to figure out a way to use the color, but tone it down. It was an extensive process of creating test pages for us to review. There was a lot of sending edits back and forth until we got it right.

The average time spent on site has dramatically increased. The bounce rate on the old website was very high. User traffic has increased a bit as well, but we don't do any marketing for our company. Our key metric is time spent on site, and that’s been the most significant improvement.

They used a project management tool, and we communicated entirely online. They’re quick to respond. The built the new site in a test environment that I could access whenever I wanted. I emailed them any changes and updates. They delivered everything on schedule, but we were slow on getting internal sign-off.

They’re really efficient and reasonably priced. We weren't asking for a complicated website, but they were able to come up with interesting designs.

Are there any areas they could improve?

If they’d pushed back more about the creative when we were figuring out the color challenge, maybe we could’ve resolved that issue a bit quicker.

Any advice for potential customers?

Everything is done online. As a client, you must be prepared to spend a lot of time online in order to work with them. If that doesn't suit you, then Bird Marketing Limited isn’t the right fit. We felt it was much quicker and more effective to do it their way.

When we met Bird Marketing, we had a rough idea of what we wanted. They designed and a built a modern, SEO-friendly web platform to gain visibility on Google. They kept our vision in mind, but added their own flair.

After launching the website, we ran a comprehensive SEO campaign with phenomenal results. Bird Marketing noticed the online potential of electric mopeds. They perform keyword research and give us the figures. We work together to identify the best keywords to target, and they deal with everything.

The team has grown significantly since we started working with them. We now have two main points of contact, our account manager and our search manager. Our search manager stays in touch about his work, and our account manager compiles all the completed tasks into a monthly report. Although we'd been happy with our original website, the company that built it became difficult to work with after they were acquired. They’d used proprietary software that tied us to their services. We wanted to move to a more mainstream platform that other support companies could understand, modify, and access. We decided to develop a new site from scratch with Bird Marketing.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Bird Marketing built a more user-friendly, modernized, and searchable platform. They migrated all the content and maintained each existing feature from our original site. It hadn't been updated for 3-4 years, so this was a good opportunity to refresh the design. BIrd Marketing recreated the online payments function and other aspects of our old site into the new site. The simple-to-modify structure helps us keep our site relevant and interesting. We can regularly add or change content in-house.

Our key requirement was to present extensive information in a clear layout that’s easy to read. Bird Marketing created a searchable database to house our entire article archive for our monthly magazine. Instead of disappearing with the next edition, users can now easily reference these older publications. Many people visit our member organization’s page to find companies in their industry. A separate database that can be sorted by several search criteria lists our member companies along with contact information.

Jake (Lead Developer, Bird Marketing) worked with us on the support side. We were mostly involved with Phil (Director, Bird Marketing) during the website development. 

How did you come to work with Bird Marketing?

We found Bird Marketing through our I.T. support company. Initially, we went through a third party. After realizing what a great job they were doing, we cut out the middleman and started working with them directly during the design stage.

We began working with them in May of 2016, and our collaboration is still ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Since launching Bird Marketing’s newly enhanced site, we’ve achieved marked success in getting our users past our homepage. They're now clicking through to at least one other section. When we first started working together, we had a very high bounce rate. Recent reports indicate the redesign reduced this rate to next to nothing, which is an amazing goal to achieve. 

We've seen a substantial benefit from the platform Bird Marketing delivered. It has many web pages to explore that contain useful information for our members. Streamlined navigation makes our resources much more accessible and easy to locate. 

How did Bird Marketing perform from a project management standpoint?

Internally, we’re complete novices at website management. Even if they've already explained a concept ten times, Bird Marketing is always willing to help. They’re brilliant, efficient, and extremely accessible. We can send them an email whenever we need instructions. They quickly respond with a crib sheet or how-to guide to make us less reliant on their expertise. 

If a task is too complicated, they'll change the coding themselves. Nothing is too much trouble for Bird Marketing. They're very approachable, responsive, and solve problems easily. I can't think of a single occasion when they haven't been able to help us.

Bird Marketing has been an open, upfront, and uncomplicated partner. As a very small business, they've saved us valuable time by taking care of our tech-related issues. They've created useful tools for us that minimize our worries and make life easier. Whenever we're really stuck, they'll conduct a training course to boost our confidence level.

The website is really fast. Many customers email us and tell us how much they love the new site. We also gained 10,000 followers within two weeks since they started working on our digital marketing.

How did Bird Marketing perform from a project management standpoint?

If we want something done, it is done within an hour and if it something urgent, they are on it right away. We recently had a problem with our shipping, and they fixed it before the deadline.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Everything they do is impressive. Phil [Managing Director, Bird Marketing] continuously suggests improvements to everything. For example, we have a large following on Instagram, but business was slow for about six months due to the Instagram algorithm changes. Phil told us what we were doing wrong and changed it for us. We went from gaining 1,000 followers in four or five months to gaining thousands of followers in a short amount of time.

Their company is amazing. Phil is such a nice person and the staff is brilliant. They go beyond what needs to be done and exceed expectations in what they offer us. They work around the clock and will do anything for us at any time of day.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, they are brilliant.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Make sure you find the right partners to work with. It is really important that the design company you are working with have the same enthusiasm as you do toward your brand in order to help you grow it. If you are just another customer on their list, they aren’t going to help you. But, if they look at your brand and you see they want to help you the way that Phil’s company does, then you will definitely succeed.

I Love Fancy Dresses Ltd. is an e-commerce company in Essex in the UK selling fancy dresses. We deliver about 300,000 parcels a year worldwide but mostly within the UK. I’m the director.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Bird Marketing?

We are massive Amazon and eBay sellers, but we weren’t very good sellers on our own website. Where we would send 300,000 parcels a year, there were 260,000 going out from Amazon and eBay sales and 45,000 coming from our website. For us this was scary because what if eBay would kick us off or Amazon would sell fancy dresses themselves, we won’t be left with our own. It never felt like our own business. We reached out to Bird to improve our brand awareness in the market and improve our website sales.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The first thing they advised us to do was clean up the website SEO-wise. We needed to make sure the site was SEO friendly and readable for the search engines. In phase two, they made a big effort in making sure we weren’t wasting any connections we already had. We have a big relationship with ITV here in the UK. We provide a lot of costumes for their TV programs and for different productions they put on. We weren’t gaining anything from that until Bird came to us and pushed them to have backlinks to our website on their website which actually got very considerable rank after they did that. Our sales started growing right away after Bird took over.

At first, I was a bit skeptical about SEO. They were very helpful in explaining and showing us what they were going to do first and then implemented the changes when we were happy.

What is the team dynamic?

There were five or six resources that assessed the website and kept us educated about the process. There was one person working on the home page, one who would work with the on-page SEO, one who dealt with resizing imagery, etc. They all had their different specialties. There were three or four that we spoke to regularly. Jake Alder, one of the developers, was really helpful.

How did you come to work with Bird Marketing?

Bird is quite a name in our local area. There are three big agencies in the area. I was very skeptical to go to an agency because I heard so many stories of them taking your money and your rank on Google not really being increased. I got recommended by a friend and I decided to do some search on Google. They were coming up very highly on Google for some of the things I wanted to do including on-page SEO cleanup and how to grow my rank with my keywords. I was doing local searches because I wanted someone I could go and meet in person. That was a big thing for me because I was so skeptical.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent £4,200 per month on SEO. There have been add-ons where I asked for development of some things that weren’t involved with the website. There were additional fees for those projects.  

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in September 2016. Our initial agreement was a 12-month contract but they never held me to that. They told me it was an ongoing process and hoped I was happy with what they were doing. The relationship is ongoing. We’re still working with them now, and we’re very happy.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They got us to page one on Google for the keyword wholesale fancy dress. Before that, we had no sales in our wholesale department. Our wholesale was all based on phone out sales. We now see sales of between £4,000 and £5,000 per month from our whole section of our website. We now rank on page one for adult fancy dress questions. Our sales are up 50% year on year on the website. In the local area, our local brand recognition has grown massively.

There was a time I would say where I work and people would ask if it was a certain store. I would say, “No, we’re over here.” Now I say where I work and people say, “Oh, I know you. I’ve seen you on Facebook or Google.” It’s been great from a local level as well as a national level.

How did Bird Marketing perform from a project management standpoint?

They did very well. What I found amazing was how they architected the whole thing before we began. Before anything was changed, it was written down and planned, and I knew every single step and change that would be made before it was done.

They have a really good ticket support system. I really hate these systems where you post a ticket and no one gets back to you for 24 hours. I want to talk to someone on the phone. They said we could phone them, but they also wanted us to try their ticket system. I post a ticket, and within 10 minutes, I have a response where I know someone’s working on it and that they understand it. Within an hour or two, there’s a response, and if it’s not fixed 100%, they let you know why. Their ticketing system is second to none.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The ticket support system was what impressed me the most. I’ve dealt with a lot of companies before and you’re just a number in line. Bird treats that ticket system like the clock is running and they need to keep moving to get on the tickets right away. That meant a lot to me because I was skeptical going into the process. It’s nice to know they’ve got your back. They’re a really friendly company. You can call them whenever you want. They’re always happy to answer your questions. They make it jargon free for someone like me who’s not SEO or technically minded. They cut out all the long words and explain what they’re going to do.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They could be a little cheaper. Their price is higher, but the service they offer is high as well. I’m not knocking their price because they have delivered tenfold. They are the high end of the market.
