Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m a legal consultant for an international NGO.
OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE
What challenge were you trying to address with Bicak Law Firm?
We needed legal consultation. One of our clients had an activity permit in Turkey and was creating some organizations and activities, mostly for Syrian refugees. We had some legal problems, and normally had a legal team for some work.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
We had an administrative law case. Our organization received consultancy services from them in the labor law area and many other areas of law.
What is the team composition?
We worked with five people from their team. There were two other lawyers as well as two secretaries.
How did you come to work with Bicak Law Firm?
We heard about Vahit (Managing Partner) and started working with him. We were very close. He was working with refugees at a detention center in Turkey. Vahit had studied in that area and that was why we wanted to work with him. At that time, there were many problems for refugees because Turkey canceled their residence and work permits, so they didn’t have any rights here.
What is the status of this engagement?
I started with the company in February 2017, and the engagement had already started so I can’t speak to the exact start date. However, we wrapped up in January 2020.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
Before working with them, the organization was going to appeal the case in court. Vahit is not only good with the academic theories of law, but he’s also good in the practice of law. He has a lot of friends and networks.
Bicak Law Firm informed us that we didn’t need to make a payment until the court case procedure was finalized. Normally, we would’ve had to make a payment. Otherwise, they’d come to us and enforce garnishment.
After Vahit informed us about that because he had received that information from the judge and the SGK, the social society institution in Turkey, we didn’t make the payment. I think this was an advantage for my organization because the amount was 1 million Turkish Lira (approximately $123,000 USD).
One of the reasons I liked working with Bicak Law Firm is because of their great language skills which helped when we had Skype meetings with our HQ staff. At the time of the engagement, Vahit was also a professor at a university, and he has a lot of knowledge because of that. His law firm is big and doesn’t cover only one subject. They are experts in many areas of law.
How did Bicak Law Firm perform from a project management standpoint?
In our line of work, the time period is especially important to not miss a litigation. From that perspective, we didn’t miss any litigation while we were working with Bicak Law Firm. Their time management was good. There were times when we requested to have a Skype meeting with our HQ, and even with Vahit being so busy, he never rejected our request or postponed things too much. We never had any problems with time management.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They really worked our case in detail, and we liked that.
Are there any areas they could improve?
They could recruit some lawyers from other departments as well. It’d be beneficial to have more experts in specific areas of the law.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
When you’re looking at Bicak Law Firm from the outside, Vahit is an expert of the organization. His aim and purpose were to make the law firm more of a partnership.
