Besides that, we get a lot of feedback on the product while presenting at conferences. It’s very well received and gathers a lot of attention.

Artifact performed well from a project management standpoint, delivering sprint work and communicating effectively with the AllBrightTechnologies team. Basically, we were a one team, as the border between the two companies was almost nonexistent. Artifact was flexible and responsive to any changes or feedback provided, and they adapted to AllBright Technologies' unique and sometimes demanding process. I’m the chief product officer of Gather, a retail investing app designed to offer investment portfolios of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to our customers.

What challenge were you trying to address with Artifact?

We hired Artifact for their development services. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Artifact was involved in the initial design of our app. They worked on customer journey design and other concepts related to the design of our product. We didn’t provide a lot of documentation since not all of the app’s features were known at the beginning. In other words, there was little information supplementation at that time apart from general brand guidelines.

At present, the team is responsible for the UI/UX design of the product. They strategize, plan, and deliver the materials that our leadership team reviews. Then, they create finalized designs that are passed to our engineers for implementation. Overall, they’re involved in everything from the conceptualization of our ideas to their delivery. In addition to the app work, they’re also redesigning our website. 

In terms of app features and functionality, it gives users access to portfolios that aren’t normally accessible for retail investors. The portfolios include ETFs and complex instruments such as diversified commodity swaps and other forms of financial wizardry. 

Moreover, the app has a good amount of backing from high-profile individuals and well-known investors. These people also include financial industry experts and influential people in the world of sports, music, and art. We present these people’s profiles on the app and allow retail investors to learn how they invest. Our target audience can also copy our backers’ portfolios for their trading strategy. 

What is the team composition?

We work with five people from Artifact on a daily basis. We’ve worked with Mateusz (Managing Partner) and Monika (UI/UX Design Team Lead), along with senior and junior developers. 

How did you come to work with Artifact?

Artifact was recommended by our previous CTO, and they were hired even before I joined the company. They seemed to be a great fit for us because they had a proven track record in terms of guiding management teams from the early-stage concepts to implementation. On top of that, they were based in Poland, so their services were less expensive than UK-based teams. They also had great expertise. Overall, they had a great mix of skill sets and pricing, so we hired them. 

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent around €75,000 (approximately $86,000 USD). 

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in January 2020, and the engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

It’s a pleasure to work with Artifact, which is such an experienced team. They’re competent when it comes to core design skills; they produce what’s required and are pragmatic and logical when working out usages. The team has great creative skills, and they have great eyes for design — the creative approach that Artifact has taken for this project is fantastic. 

How did Artifact perform from a project management standpoint?

Their project management skills are great. Artifact resources have a good attitude, and they deliver on time. In fact, they work extra hours if necessary. In other words, they’re quite flexible. On top of that, they can revisit things we’ve previously agreed upon when such things become technically impossible to do. To communicate, we use Slack, video calls, and Figma.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The quality of Artifact’s work distinguishes them from other providers. We get plenty of skills in one shot, and the team has a good price and delivers consistently. It’s quite rare to find a team with a wide range of skills and with consistency. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, there aren’t any at the moment.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I recommend working with Artifact. They have a great ability to deliver frontend engineering projects. Given what I’ve seen during our project’s design stage, working with Artifact on frontend technologies is something worth exploring.

How did you select Artifact?

We have been cooperating with Artifact for a couple of years before I started my career at Billennium. The partnership has been described as successful, so the main goal was to expand the cooperation area, improve financial KPI and project utilization levels.

Due to NDA, I cannot write about project details. There were more than 30 complex projects for global leaders of the pharmaceutical market. Artifact provided UX research, strategy, design and support services.

What was the team composition?

Artifact worked on projects involving teams of 10 to 40 IT specialists. UX services have been represented as 1 or 2 person teams working closely with stakeholders

Projects Managers have been pleased with delivered UX activities and generated outcomes. The value created consisted better usability, more intuitive solutions, higher customer engagement, satisfaction levels and better service flows.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

We have a bullet-proof custom-designed process of communication on a Team Management level. We use Microsoft Teams to cross-communicate.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

I am impressed with their quick, agile, skill-based UX management approach. Open and honest communication about goals, problems and transparent feedback culture.

I'm the founder of a fintech company, and we're building a new way for consumers to pay their bills.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Artifact?

We needed help with our UI/UX and higher-level messaging to consumers on the app side, such as with feelings, emotions, colors, and similar aspects.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Artifact did three projects for us. For the biggest project, they converted the wireframes I provided into app screens. They fully designed the app screens, including their colors and look and feel.

They brought a lot to the table in terms of ideas and changes to create a more personal approach. They delivered 50 different app screens as well as the format of future screens. My team then used the app screens to code and build an iOS app.

What is the team composition?

We worked with Mateusz and Jan (Partners), and they had 2–3 people working below them. Mateusz and Jan managed the business and set the direction for their team, while the people under them did the actual designs. When they showed us their work, Mateusz presented the design, but the junior designer who worked on it would also be there for questions.

How did you come to work with Artifact?

They were recommended by one of their clients. I chose Artifact primarily because of the price — we are based in Australia, and vendors here are more expensive. Another reason was that they were very responsive. We wanted to start the project the following week, and they moved very quickly. 

How much have you invested with them?

The first two engagments cost around $15,000–$20,000 AUD (approximately $11,000–$15,000 USD).

What is the status of this engagement?

Our first engagement was from October–November 2019. The next project began in November 2020 and lasted for about four years. Every couple of weeks, we send them ad hoc sprints, and every six months we send them something quite large, like a new user journey. We haven’t done anything big with them this year, though.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Since the project was mainly about design, the impact of their work was not quantifiable. There was less data but instead more insights about the look, feel, comfort, and pleasingness to the eye. 

We reviewed everything in detail because this is our core business, and we gave feedback at each stage. They responded to that feedback, and they ran feedback sessions for that purpose. Every three days, they presented on what they were doing, and we went through that together. My team and I gave feedback, and then they incorporated that feedback into the next round. It was a constant review cycle.

I was impressed that they were very good at bringing the feedback through; they didn’t try and push us down the first avenue that they built. Instead, they were very open to customizing, changing, and rethinking their work. 

How did Artifact perform from a project management standpoint?

They were good at project management. We set our calls during my night time which is their early morning — their 8 a.m. is my 6 p.m. — and that worked. 

We used Slack, emails, and calls to communicate. They used their own tools, and we collaborated in Figma. They delivered the files using Zeplin and other services.

They also had a very good project plan with each step mapped out. My experience working with offshore teams is that you often have to drive them and control the plan because things drop off. Artifact was the opposite, as they were professional and they provided high-quality work. 

The first time we used them, we didn’t know what the work would be like, but it ended up great. Their work was of such high quality that we went back to them each time we needed changes.

Artifact was knowledgeable about fintech and had great ideas. Even when we had a good idea about what we wanted, they elevated the idea. They didn’t just produce what they were told; rather, they tried to take it to the next step. They were very good subject matter experts on fintech. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

I think they could improve their communication around project timelines. If things start to fall behind, they could advise on the new end date. I wasn’t always sure about the end date when they needed to add a few more days in the middle of an engagement. Constantly updating the timeline to keep the client aware would be a benefit.

They didn’t meet some deadlines, but they were only late by a day or two. It was not like they disappeared; they let us know that they needed more time and rescheduled the call for the next day. It was never a problem, and it would have been worse if they rushed it. It was a very positive collaboration.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Listen to Artifact. Don’t just get them to implement what you want — let them try and add a bit of value and creativity. Let them give you some ideas on how to improve because they are good thinkers. They’re not only good at implementing and converting a design, but they can also think about that and add a lot of value.

Making an impact on climate change challenges by building the community and mapping the connections between organizations, institutions, and climate experts by designing & development of the Climate Community Lab Tool as well as the accompanying Climate Community Lab Tool website.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

The project is divided into two phases. The completed first phase resulted in the first version of the interactive mapping tool with defined functionalities and design, and a website.

The first phase of testing with internal users also took place. The delivered products are of high quality, are made according to the latest standards and meet our expectations.

The project was supervised by one of the Artifact’s Managing Partners. Each product layer had a person responsible: the ideation phase, design and development. The team works with a proper SCRUM process using tools such as Jira, Miro and gSuite to provide a smooth, collaborative and remote collaboration.

Even though the timelines were tight, the team delivered the product wisely, taking into account what is important and what are the priorities.
