What challenge were you trying to address with AltSolution?
We needed a partner to develop a platform to help our end clients place orders and manage their accounts.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?
AltSolution used PHP to build the platform, working on both the frontend and backend. We provided the design, and they did all of the dev and guided us through the project. The platform has a complex workflow, but AltSolution was able to meet the requirements. Users can complete orders and review their financials and other account information in the platform.

We had one main point of contact.

We found them on Upwork. We spoke to a few different companies, but they seemed to be the most reliable, so we hired them.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
We ended up switching platforms because the market and our clients’ needs changed. However, we still use AltSolution’s concept, which had been well received by our team and end clients.

How did AltSolution perform from a project management standpoint?
The team was proactive and efficient, accomplishing tasks quickly and clearly guiding us through the engagement. 

What did you find most impressive about them?
They knew we weren’t very experienced in this area of work, so they directed us and provided good ideas. The team was dedicated and personal, working through the night the meet our needs.

If they haven’t already, they should update and expand the coding languages they work in.

I’m the co-owner of Pencil Joy, a company that creates personalized children’s books. I manage the business side of our operation, including technology and IT.

What challenge were you trying to address with AltSolution?

We needed a partner to create a cloud-based software and build a website to host that software and our product.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

AltSolution created our software and designed and programmed the website, which also has an e-commerce side. We had specific technical requirements regarding the software, including callbacks that needed to work with the cloud service provider. We use Microsoft Azure to host, store, and generate files with the software. AltSolution made sure everything was connected and implemented credit card processing and PayPal payments. They worked on the UI frontend, managed a CMS transition, and changed our web host.

The printer for our books is located overseas, so AltSolution built an API that configured our system and the printer. Now, whenever we create a file through the software that’s hosted on the cloud, it’s electronically sent to the printer and printed.

AltSolution provides ongoing maintenance and updates, resolving any glitches and adding new features as needed. They worked on our security, got us SSR certified, and built a management console where we keep data on our customers and transactions.

What is the team composition?

We mainly worked with the owner and CTO, but there was a total team of about six people.

How did you come to work with AltSolution?

We found them on Upwork. We interviewed lots of different companies, but AltSolution had good ratings, and they were clear and straightforward in our conversation. They also had a reasonable price point, so we hired them.

We spent between $50,000–$100,000.

We worked together from February–June 2016.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We’re satisfied with the end products; the software works well, and the website looks good. They resolve glitches efficiently and quickly, although we never had too many problems.

How did AltSolution perform from a project management standpoint?

Based on my past experience with other IT groups, AltSolution has excellent project management. They set expectations, meet deadlines, and consistently make progress. If there are issues or delays, they communicate those concerns. They were always available and dependable, making it easy for us to access any data we needed.

They’re a good value for money, offer great service, and strive to foster a positive working relationship.

Pushkin Academy of Russian Heritage is an educational company that hosts language classes for children ages two to 15 years old.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with AltSolution?

We have a lot of administrative tasks connected to operating the school because every child needs to be registered. It required a full staff member to address as we wanted to look into the possibility of finding an off-the-shelf solution. That ended up being expensive, so we started working on creating our own in-house solution.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They produced a detailed graphical prototype and discussed a lot of the required use cases with us. Next, they created the functional specification and began the programming.

It took them several months to produce, and then we were able to start running it in a pilot mode. It’s a complex system, so there were parts of the use case scenarios that weren’t flushed out through the functional specifications, but that wasn’t their fault. They came back and fixed it on a real-time basis and were very attentive to our business’ needs.

What is the team composition?

I interacted with their project lead. They have developers and testers, but I don’t know how many.

How did you come to work with AltSolution?

Somebody had recommended them to us many years before when we first started and needed a website. They’d done several iterations of it, so I knew that they were very reliable and could do things in a timely manner. I’ve also met with them in Kiev and had a level of trust with them.

I asked them if they work on more sophisticated programming solutions and they showed me some of their other work. We started working on the specifications and it all worked out. It was very cost-effective; they’re a great find.

How much have you invested with them?

It wasn’t more than $50,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from November 2017–May 2018.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We achieved exactly what we needed to. It’s quite lean—we were able to cut down our administrative expenses and simplify the process for ourselves and the parents. We received a lot of positive feedback about how much it simplified the registration process. There’s been no negative feedback.

How did AltSolution perform from a project management standpoint?

They’re extremely responsive and gave me great heads up. They warned me when they had another big project coming up and told me they wouldn’t be able to do anything new, but they still fixed things if we required it. All the bug fixes were done in a very timely manner.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They provide good value; you receive a lot for your money. Their professionalism also impressed me.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They have good communication skills and good English, but it could be better. I’m a Russian speaker and it’s easy for me to speak to them in Russian but I prefer to write in English, so our communication was in a mix of English and Russian. It’s more of a style matter because they can a bit too direct, which some people may find abrupt.
