What challenge were you trying to address with 17 Projects Video Agency?

We were filming a project in New York City, and I had to produce it remotely. I needed to locate a skilled producer and videographer within a week's time.

What was the scope of their involvement? 

Our client embarked on a diversity project to increase the representation of people of color and those previously overlooked for higher-ranking positions. The goal was to provide more equal opportunities for everyone involved.

17 Projects Video Agency was tasked with creating an interview Q&A video that involved multiple interviews, requiring clear audio and quality visuals. To my surprise, Rob (Founder & Head of Production) and his crew also did a little light production design. Due to the client's company and its significance, they handled the storyboarding and scriptwriting internally. Our task was simply to carry out the plan.

Before production started, Rob and I had multiple planning calls. During these calls, Rob informed me of his physical requirements, including using production carts. As a result, I took steps to ensure the freight elevator was available for them to use.

They created a longer video and then cut it into smaller snippets. They then delivered the footage, and the client handled the editing.

The crew was relatively small, consisting of Rob as the production manager, a director of photography, and potentially a production assistant.

I want to give a shout-out to Rob. He was very transparent, and there were no surprises.

I interviewed 5–7 companies, and Rob and 17 Projects Video Agency stood out from the start. They were my first choice, and I was thrilled Rob was willing to accept. I had a lot at stake because this was one of our huge clients.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The work completed by 17 Projects Video Agency resulted in additional work opportunities. One executive from the client's team flew in from Connecticut to be present for the shoot. Early on, he expressed admiration for Rob's abilities and had a pleasant experience collaborating with him and the rest of the group. 

I had hired an external crew to help with hair and makeup, and they had met with Rob. It was a collaborative effort, and I'm pleased everything turned out well. Rob and 17 Projects Video Agency were the right ones for the job.

How did 17 Projects Video Agency perform from a project management standpoint?

While in production, Rob would update me if there were any unusual occurrences or periods of downtime. During the production, Rob and his team maintained a non-intrusive approach. I did not receive any negative feedback regarding the process.

We primarily used Google Workspace, as well as phone calls and texts. Rob consistently kept me updated by checking in and sending pictures, including a photo of the setup, for my review. He respectfully requested my approval, and even after taking over, he welcomed my feedback. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

Rob consistently displayed professionalism and demonstrated a dual mindset as a director and producer. It was beneficial to have both mindsets during our calls discussing shots and the individuals we would be conversing with. Rob knew the right questions to ask, which is why I chose his team. 

Rob was very responsive and very transparent. He was able to meet us where we were, especially budget-wise. He didn't lower his standards; he met us halfway and over-delivered. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can't think of any areas for improvement. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I believe in being well-prepared. With my extensive production experience, I know that I can handle any challenge that comes my way. However, I understand that not everyone has the same knowledge and expertise. I'm confident that Rob and his team can work with anyone, even those who only have a basic idea of what they want in a video. You can't go wrong if you choose the right team, even if you don't know what you're doing.

We were doing recruitment marketing for our AmeriCorps Maker Fellow program. Our team worked with young adults across the country in a forum where they could help build maker spaces in the community. 17 Projects helped us create a recruitment marketing video to get more people excited about the program.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Initially, we had a discovery call with Rob (Founder & Head of Production) and discussed our needs and wants. He then worked with the AmeriCorps Maker Fellow team to collaborate with the participants. 17 Projects helped us create scripts for them and conduct interviews. Rob was in charge of putting the whole video together once we had all the stories we needed. 

The video had real people in them. Because everything was done virtually, we relied on the people that were being interviewed. Rob set them up for success by telling them what they needed in terms of internet speed, lighting, and others. Some of the maker fellows were able to provide B-rolls for themselves.

Apart from Rob, another person from their team helped deliver the final product. 

How did you come to work with 17 Projects Video Agency?

Rob reached out to us with a video grant opportunity for nonprofits. We chatted with him about what that meant in terms of discounts and how the project would work out. After vetting a couple of other video coordinators, we decided to work with 17 Projects. 

How much have you invested with them?

The whole project cost just over $2,000 from soup to nuts. We had about a $1,200 discount. 

What is the status of this engagement?

The project lasted from January–May 2022.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

The video was delivered, and we’ve since used it on our YouTube channel. Our team has used it for marketing purposes, too — we were able to splice the video and use it as social media content. 

Meanwhile, the people involved in the video were happy about how the project turned out. They used it in their own organizations as a highlight. On top of that, we received plenty of positive feedback from the people in our organization; they said the video was truly well done. 

Moreover, we added the video to our Indeed page, where we did a lot of our recruitment campaigns. I noticed quite an uptick in the number of people visiting our Indeed page, which wasn’t truly active before. In other words, the video helped us grow traffic on that page. Subsequently, we gained more leads in terms of recruitment. 

How did 17 Projects Video Agency perform from a project management standpoint?

It was nice that we were in the driver’s seat for much of the project. The project was done exactly when we needed it. Nothing fell off, and everything was kept on track all the time. Rob always touched base with us; if there was any lapse in communication, it was on our end. Overall, he was a great project manager as he guided us through everything. All in all, the project was truly well put together. 

For tools, we used Asana internally for the project; with Rob, we used only email and phone. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

17 Projects’ communication and wealth of knowledge in video production were impressive. They also listened well to our wants and needs. Overall, they were true experts in their field. They provided all the resources we needed to create a great video.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They captured everything we needed. However, as we got closer to the end of the project, we experienced some lapses in communication, which were typical when working on projects with tight deadlines. We’d have appreciated 1–2 more rounds of communication to figure out when the project was going to be completed. Outside of that, everything was truly well done from start to finish. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

17 Projects is truly well-versed in the nonprofit sector. They’ve done a lot of videos for other nonprofits of our size. Their video grants are a valuable tool many nonprofits should take advantage of for their projects. 

Apart from that, if you have a new concept or video, it’s best to bring a whole team together to work on internal project management instead of just having a one-on-one relationship with Rob.

We had a disappointing experience with 17 Projects Video Agency. We paid in April, and the project was delayed multiple times. I had to chase them repeatedly, but many of my emails went unanswered. I even left messages on their website twice before someone finally responded. It felt like they only replied after I got upset, which was frustrating. The final video was okay, not perfect, but acceptable. Unfortunately, despite the lower price, I would not work with them again because the lack of communication made the whole process unpleasant.
