I am the Public Relations Director at FirstBank, a Colorado-based bank offering consumer and commercial banking services, including loans, mortgages, and treasury management. We have branches in Colorado and Arizona and are recognized for our significant philanthropic contributions.

We needed to increase brand awareness for FirstBank, as we were a relatively unknown player in the Phoenix area. We wanted an agency to amplify our brand and reputation.

10 to 1 Public Relations primarily handled media and influencer relations for us. We also involved them in strategy, partnerships, issues management, and more. They produced deliverables such as media placements and interviews, and I often had them share their results with my team and other agency partners to inspire better outcomes.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Media hits substantially increased, the number of awards and recognitions grew, and overall brand sentiment, awareness, and new accounts also increased. When we started, we were a $14-$16 billion organization, and now we are at $28 billion. 10 to 1 Public Relations certainly had a part to play in that growth. Our media coverage went from nearly zero to a significant presence, especially in local news and broadcast, with some national opportunities as well.

What challenge were you trying to address with 10 to 1 Public Relations?

We were looking for a PR agency and needed a crisis communications plan. We had a situation back in 2020 and needed some help.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We initially brought 10 to 1 Public Relations on board for crisis communications. They built a plan that involved social media advertising and a press release. We initially had a meeting with our marketing team, and we shared with them our organization's information, goals, and differences from competitors. Then, after navigating the crisis, we brought them on retainer as our PR agency of record. 

They helped us with press releases, events, and PR opportunities for our doctors to speak on the news and establish themselves as thought leaders. They also helped us find some speaking opportunities across radio, TV, and magazines.

We found them through a local search. We had a meeting with them a couple of years ago, but we didn't engage them until a few years later.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The number of placements we got grew every year we worked with them. Every year was a progression year, and one year, we doubled the amount of PR hits from the previous year. As I said, we liked working with 10 to 1 Public Relations so much that we brought them on for more things throughout the years. Overall, their work met our expectations.

How did 10 to 1 Public Relations perform from a project management standpoint?

They communicated well, and everything was always on budget. 10 to 1 Public Relations was very transparent about that. We used Excel sheets to track PR activities, and email and phone calls as the main methods of communication.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their ability to navigate crisis communications was impressive. They helped ease our stress and made everything seem like there would be an end in sight. 10 to 1 Public Relations' team was patient and amazing at helping us navigate crisis communications.

No, I was happy working with them.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be as upfront and transparent as possible with everything that’s going on. 10 to 1 Public Relations can only help and assist with what they know. Sometimes what you’re telling them is the only source they have. Don’t be afraid to dive into anything happening internally that you may not want to get external.

Keep in mind that providing context around some of those internal activities can be really helpful for navigating external media conversations and pitching. It can help you be more strategic with your communication.

As a startup, our goal when we approach a potential investor is that they know us. 10 to 1 Public Relations successfully published many papers, interviews, and webinars. Now, when we approach potential investors, some actually have heard about us.

Overall, 10 to 1 Public Relations did a good job. Their consulting work put our minds at ease, and we achieved what we wanted.

How did 10 to 1 Public Relations perform from a project management standpoint?

They showed a lot of initiative, so we didn’t have to spend time trying to follow up. We had weekly video conference calls and communicated through emails and phone calls.

Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?

Rachael sent reports every week and saved us from some work.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We didn’t expect them to track all kinds of competitions where we could receive an award. Not only did they track it, but they also filled out the forms and submitted us to be candidates for the awards, which was helpful as a startup.

No, there wasn’t anything to improve.

If I’d personally known more, I would’ve pushed them to do more things. However, it was my first time exposed to PR activity.

We engaged the services of 10 to 1 Public Relations to enhance our brand reputation in food service management, the K-12 markets, and other areas where we were expanding our business. We aimed to grow our brand reputation and specific growth areas within these markets.

What was the scope of their involvement? 

Our partnership began with thorough research and consultation with our leaders and executive team. 10 to 1 Public Relations aimed to comprehensively understand our organizational objectives, growth areas, and desired industry positioning as thought leaders and experts. We then identified those key markets, where we wanted to focus, and what that messaging might look like. We started seeking opportunities for PR and media placements in those areas. 

The team managed our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts, and we collaborated on content creation. I gathered visual assets and provided them to the team. They created press release templates for any new business and original content for editorial placement and awards submissions.

Our social media accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter were created and developed by 10 to 1 Public Relations, which has helped us gain significant followers.

Their team did an exceptional job in recognizing various opportunities for us. Specifically, their assistance in managing our social media channels was immensely beneficial as we were relatively new to this domain and had limited experience. Their support was crucial and provided us with a significant boost. 

How did 10 to 1 Public Relations perform from a project management standpoint?

They achieved all the set deadlines. We mainly communicated via phone and email throughout the month, using Zoom for our monthly meetings when necessary. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

The team at 10 to 1 Public Relations was able to understand our situation and work with us effectively. Before working with them, we hadn't engaged in much PR or reputation-building beyond word of mouth. However, they identified feasible opportunities for us to pursue as we worked to establish our brand reputation. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

We mainly concentrated on the Phoenix region and encountered difficulties securing placement beyond that area. Although we could publish in some industry publications with a broader reach, we could've benefited from improving our placement in other markets where we were expanding our business.

It's essential for an organization or entity to have a clear vision of who they are and articulate it well. This helps establish the goals and opportunities to ensure everyone gets what they expect from the experience.

I'm the former CEO and owner of North America's oldest professional networking organization. My team and I brought together business owners from diverse industries and trained them in creating a salesforce through word-of-mouth referrals. We restricted membership to only one business category per group to maintain exclusivity and maximize potential collaborations.

Before I took over the company, we relied on word of mouth for 30 years. Although it worked well enough, I didn't see the desired outcomes, and we were eager to expand. We turned to 10 to 1 Public Relations to spread the word about our business.

The 10 to 1 Public Relations team was in charge of promoting our work, helping us win awards, and informing others about our mission and achievements.

Josh was phenomenal from day one. The entire team from 10 to 1 Public Relations became integral to our organization.

Their team grew rapidly, which made it challenging to maintain a consistent perspective. Despite this, 10 to 1 Public Relations did an excellent job as we were experiencing growth simultaneously. Fortunately, we worked with 1-2 individuals who led our project, making it more manageable. Nonetheless, as new team members joined, it felt like an interference.

I suggest requesting to work with a consistent team. Choose the team you prefer and continue collaborating with them.

I’m the director of marketing for Partnership for Economic Innovation (PEI), an economic development nonprofit in Phoenix, Arizona. We’re focused on turning Arizona into a world-class economy. We have a few initiatives as we try to achieve that goal, such as applied research initiatives, research centers in wearable tech and blockchain, and others.

What challenge were you trying to address with 10 to 1 Public Relations?

We’ve hired 10 to 1 to work across our various initiatives; they work with us as a whole organization but they also look for PR opportunities for each of our initiatives. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Recently, 10 to 1 has worked on our second annual State of Innovation Summit, where we get in front of our target audience in the Legislature and tell them why we should invest public funds into innovation. It’s a big event that we’ve been planning with a bunch of partners, and the team has helped us in terms of strategic setup. They look into everything we’re planning and search for PR opportunities. Their deliverables for this include an op-ed article that’s been published before the event aired. 

Apart from that, they’ve also done press releases. One of our stakeholders has also had an interview, and the team has written important talking points for that. Overall, they provide us with traditional PR services. They go after earned media in support of our initiatives. 

What is the team composition?

We work with a couple of primary account leads, but five people in total work on our account on any given day. We then have two main points of contact, including an account lead. 

How did you come to work with 10 to 1 Public Relations?

We previously had a different PR firm, but we decided to switch to another vendor As a result, I got a referral from another vendor that worked as a generalist marketing support team for us. They referred us to 10 to 1 — they sang praises about the team. As a result, we gave the engagement a go.

We’ve invested around $32,000, though we’ve recently increased our monthly retainer with them by about 20%–30%.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with 10 to 1 in July 2021, and the engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

This year alone, we’ve already had around 40 media features. That’s already a lot if we start the count from January 2022. Moreover, we like that 10 to 1 keeps an organized media report that’s accessible to us. As a result, we can always go in and see the media features they’ve garnered for us.

How did 10 to 1 Public Relations perform from a project management standpoint?

10 to 1 is highly organized in terms of project management and documentation. This is one of their strongest suits. Moreover, the team is willing to use whatever tool we need. As a small company, we’ve struggled with figuring out the right tools for us, and 10 to 1 has always been on board with us on trying out different things. 

On top of that, they always keep us updated. We have a monthly standing call for all of our different initiatives. They also always make themselves available to us. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

We have a challenging space in terms of messaging; it involves big, high-level economic arguments, and we need to make these things relevant to people and turn them into human stories. Given these, 10 to 1 does a great job of providing communications that fit what we’re looking for; we’re also impressed with their organization and attention to detail.

Are there any areas they could improve?

10 to 1 could probably expand their service offerings. From the get-go, they’ve considered themselves as a traditional firm that goes after earned media. However, since they’ve done such a great job doing that, we’d be interested in asking them to write blog posts for us or do more social media-focused work. These things are outside the current scope of their offerings.

Have clear goals so that 10 to 1 can help you reach them faster. Otherwise, they’re going to come in using their standard strategy.

What challenge were you trying to address with 10 to 1 Public Relations?

We engaged with 10 to 1 Public Relations to promote our wins and our brand. They created unique videos, content, and press releases to highlight a few of our partnerships.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We started off with a few press releases that announced our new partnerships. They also handled social media posts around special events and holidays.

From there, they conducted interviews, promoted parent testimonials, and featured local managers in videos in three of our biggest markets. Then they created videos to show how unique our programs are, wrote articles, and ensured our content got exposure on major news outlets.

What is the team composition?

At one point, there were five people involved in the project, but there were two people who were primarily working on it. We worked with Josh (President), but our primary contacts were Sharda and Erica (Senior Account Executives).

How did you come to work with 10 to 1 Public Relations?

We found them through a mutual contact. They had worked with 10 to 1 Public Relations in the past and were really happy with their work. We interviewed several companies, but we liked how personal they made everything. They communicated well and paid attention to detail.

How much have you invested with them?

We invested around $20,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in October 2020 and we recently paused the project in April 2021.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We saw great results. Whenever a big campaign went out in areas, we saw an uptick in program registrations. Our open and click-through rates were the highest that we’ve ever had. We also saw an uptick in incoming franchise leads.

We’re pausing our partnership because we’re not sure how successful our camps will be this summer due to COVID-19. Once we have a better understanding of how the business looks, we hope to work with 10 to 1 Public Relations again.

How did 10 to 1 Public Relations perform from a project management standpoint?

Their communication was fantastic. Not only did we have weekly calls, but they also sent an email at the end of every week that showed the results of their campaigns.

On top of that, they were very responsive. Whenever we needed something, they were there to support us. They delivered on time and on budget.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re engaged with many different clients, but they made us feel like we were their main priority. They gave us a ton of one-on-one attention even though we were just a small piece of their overall business.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There were some markets that picked up our releases that we don’t operate in. That wasn’t their fault, but we needed to be more specific about the markets we wanted to target.

They’re really good at what they do, but you need to understand your goals and clearly outline your deliverables. They’re a great company that can help you achieve your goals.
