Recently, 10 to 1 has worked on our second annual State of Innovation Summit, where we get in front of our target audience in the Legislature and tell them why we should invest public funds into innovation. It’s a big event that we’ve been planning with a bunch of partners, and the team has helped us in terms of strategic setup. They look into everything we’re planning and search for PR opportunities. Their deliverables for this include an op-ed article that’s been published before the event aired.
Apart from that, they’ve also done press releases. One of our stakeholders has also had an interview, and the team has written important talking points for that. Overall, they provide us with traditional PR services. They go after earned media in support of our initiatives.

We work with a couple of primary account leads, but five people in total work on our account on any given day. We then have two main points of contact, including an account lead.

10 to 1 is highly organized in terms of project management and documentation. This is one of their strongest suits. Moreover, the team is willing to use whatever tool we need. As a small company, we’ve struggled with figuring out the right tools for us, and 10 to 1 has always been on board with us on trying out different things.
On top of that, they always keep us updated. We have a monthly standing call for all of our different initiatives. They also always make themselves available to us.

We have a challenging space in terms of messaging; it involves big, high-level economic arguments, and we need to make these things relevant to people and turn them into human stories. 10 to 1 could probably expand their service offerings. From the get-go, they’ve considered themselves as a traditional firm that goes after earned media. We’re pausing our partnership because we’re not sure how successful our camps will be this summer due to COVID-19. Once we have a better understanding of how the business looks, we hope to work with 10 to 1 Public Relations again.
How did 10 to 1 Public Relations perform from a project management standpoint?
Their communication was fantastic. Not only did we have weekly calls, but they also sent an email at the end of every week that showed the results of their campaigns.
On top of that, they were very responsive. Whenever we needed something, they were there to support us. They delivered on time and on budget.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They’re engaged with many different clients, but they made us feel like we were their main priority. They gave us a ton of one-on-one attention even though we were just a small piece of their overall business.
Are there any areas they could improve?
There were some markets that picked up our releases that we don’t operate in. That wasn’t their fault, but we needed to be more specific about the markets we wanted to target.

They’re really good at what they do, but you need to understand your goals and clearly outline your deliverables. They’re a great company that can help you achieve your goals.

I connected with them through a referral by one of my partners who utilized their services. After interviewing several PR firms, I decided that 10 to 1 most aligned with our business needs and approach to forming relationships.

We spent roughly $72,000 on their services.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started with them around June 2019, and we ended our contract with them in March 2021.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
10 to 1 kept track of any notable pick-ups or any article mentions in a spreadsheet. We also kept track of the number of releases issued. The results of their work were national pick-ups, local pick-ups, and 1–2 podcast appearances. Overall, I was satisfied with their services.
How did 10 to 1 Public Relations perform from a project management standpoint?
They were great at meeting deadlines. On a weekly basis, their team met with one of my team members. During the call, they shared updates as well as what their team needed to be able to move forward.
What did you find most impressive about them?
I appreciated their humility and ability to understand our niche. Their team wasn’t afraid to ask questions. They genuinely cared about our relationship and the services their team provided to us.

Depending on the industry, there’s an opportunity for them to focus on appropriate publications, podcasts, and interview opportunities for those markets.

Having open communication, regular meetings, and a clear vision for how to measure success would put you in a great position. The 10 to 1 team cares and wants to perform but needs your guidance to understand what performance looks like to you.

What challenge were you trying to address with 10 to 1 Public Relations?
We had a big crisis that had to do with potential past misgivings with a contractor of ours and the fact that those actions could reflect badly on us by association.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
10 to 1 Public Relations helped us to keep the situation from snowballing into something greater than it needed to be. Josh (President) provided a lot of clarity and stability during the time in mostly how to interface with the community during a time of crisis to minimize the damage done.
Josh helped to formulate some of our PR statements, and I would go through each one to make sure that it reflected our policies and our overall general demeanor when it comes to delivering to our community.
That way, it didn't come off as disingenuous. We wanted to make sure that every statement that we put forth was honest and came from us, which it did. So, Josh would often draft the copy and then go over it with me.
In addition to those deliverables, 10 to 1 Public Relations also did a lot of interfacing with the community directly at large in a candid fashion. Josh made sure to address those situations ahead of time to make sure that all of the information that was coming from our company was concise and clear.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
They helped us to minimize the speculation, negativity, and poor perception of our company during this situation, as well as to narrow down the direct information that we should be delivered to the community to make sure that they felt comfortable in our ability to handle the situation.
10 to 1 Public Relations’ contributions helped immensely with the tone and demeanor of our community and their reaction towards the PR that we put out. We were satisfied with their work, and we look forward to working with them in the future beyond crisis management.
How did 10 to 1 Public Relations perform from a project management standpoint?
The team was always accessible, even round the clock, which is a top priority for a company in a crisis. I can’t speak highly enough about their availability. Having a company that was available at any time was wonderful.
What did you find most impressive about them?
10 to 1 Public Relations’ professionalism and punctuality were impressive. Everything was well-structured, and we didn’t have to wait to get any correspondence; it was very swift.
Additionally, they were very proactive and didn’t wait to get any information from us. The team took the initiative to draft up statements, to see some of the press that was out there, and to bring that press to our attention.
Are there any areas they could improve?
No, I have no suggestions. Overall, it was a pleasurable experience, especially during a time of stress and crisis.

I’m the VP of sales and marketing for Worzalla, a 128-year-old book manufacturer headquartered in Wisconsin.

What challenge were you trying to address with 10 to 1 Public Relations?
We’re a manufacturer and, as a result, we’re not great at promoting ourselves. We wanted to establish brand consistency and use social media in a stronger way. We also wanted to use their skills to help us advertise and get savvier at hiring employees.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
Most importantly, we've turned over the management of our social media to them. I was doing our social media, and I was average at best. They've taken on making sure that we have a consistent and regular message across all of the platforms. We were previously only on Facebook, and now we're on Instagram and LinkedIn as well.
It was very important to me to maintain the company’s proper tone and image, and it didn’t take 10 to 1 long to figure this out. Within a couple of weeks, I was able to turn over complete control of the writing.
They’ve also done an incredible job making sure we get PR in both industry news and local media. They also helped us create a series of videos that can be used for advertising the company and recruiting future employees.
What is the team composition?
In general, we have a main account manager who does an excellent job. Then, we’ve worked with and received guidance on some tough issues from Josh (President). We have direct contact with him and have used him multiple times. Then, we’ve worked with a third member of their team who has a background as an in-front-of-the-camera TV reporter. She was very helpful when we created the video series.
How did you come to work with 10 to 1 Public Relations?
Networking helped us find them. As a small Midwestern manufacturer, we’re not experts at advertising and marketing, and we found their comprehensive approach to be helpful. We were most impressed by the ease of working with them.
How much have you invested with them?
We’re on a monthly retainer that is comfortable for us.
What is the status of this engagement?
Our work together began in April 2019, and it’s ongoing.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
I don't need to edit what they put out; I have complete confidence in their ability to write content that matches our tone. They provide a monthly recap of all of the successful media we’ve had in the previous month. They measure the number of stories we’re featured in. There are very few publications in the industry, and they’re able to get us in those regularly. Since we’ve employed them, we’ve maintained a regular presence in all of the industry publications and been featured at least once a month in the local news or on local TV stations.
We’ve measured social media traffic, and that’s up dramatically. Most importantly, we’ve been able to measure their work through word-of-mouth. We have a very small customer base that is predominantly in Manhattan, which is where the book publishing headquarters are. They have all commented with regularity the increased awareness they have about our company and the results of 10 to 1’s efforts.
How did 10 to 1 Public Relations perform from a project management standpoint?
They are excellent. We primarily communicate through phone and email. They handled one of our most successful projects, which was a naming competition for our recently installed press equipment. The majority of what we produce are children's books, so we had a competition in the community and invited any school to nominate names for the press. It was a 4–6-week effort, culminating in an online vote.
The community chose the winner, and we put a plaque with the winning name on the side of the press. We gave awards to the kids whose class won. We were planning to hold a pizza party and have the kids come and see the piece of equipment, but unfortunately, that's been indefinitely postponed because of COVID. 10 to 1 handled the entire project, and it was quite a success.
What did you find most impressive about them?
The speed at which they got comfortable with our business was impressive. We’re unique in that book printers are custom manufacturers; we make whatever our customers need and then ship it. Understanding this business’s unique nature and the associated rhythms isn’t easy, but they were quick to get it.
Are there any areas they could improve?
No, I’m pretty pleased.
Any advice for potential customers?
I’d encourage you to invite them into the inner-most elements of the company. We had them sign NDAs and have included them on all internal documents. In order for them to truly help us, they need to understand everything. That’s proven to be quite successful.
