MOD is a custom furniture retailer who needed to build a responsive e-commerce web platform which allowed its users to customize their furniture orders online.

 

Supported by a state-funded accelerator and working on a tight deadline, they turned to Vairix to help develop and launch their platform. MOD first engaged with a different contractor for this project, but were unhappy with their work as

they were not able to meet the project’s requirements. They decided to change contractors, looked around for Ruby on Rails specialists, and found a long-term partner in Vairix.

 

For a two-month period, Vairix had a team of two developers dedicated to building the platform along with its customization features, and also addressing problems such as credit card processing issues while taking on any change requests. Vairix currently provides ongoing maintenance support for the finished site.

CONSUL: Helping local government increase transparency and citizen participation

The Mayor’s Office in Montevideo had the goal of providing its citizens with a participation platform where they could access public government information, as well as actively shape policies to improve city management through debates, proposals, participatory budgeting and collaborative legislation.

To effectively set up this new line of collaboration between the government and its citizens, the Mayor’s Office

needed to customize and implement new functionalities to a leading open source platform called CONSUL. This Ruby on Rails citizen participation platform is used in more than fifty countries around the world and has a very large community around it.

Through a public tendering process, VAIRIX was selected to carry out the project. Our engineers worked side by side with the Mayor’s Office staff following an Agile workflow environment.

The platform was successfully launched and has received high engagement and praise from users.

We used Angular, Angular 2, and several designs. They developed the frontend part and we handled the backend.

They assigned a project manager and two developers.

How did you come to work with VAIRIX Software Development?

We made an open call and several companies offered proposals using older frontend technologies, but we wanted to work particularly with Angular. VAIRIX Software Development showed us their portfolio and we liked it. They were also willing to adapt to our work methodology and budget. Theirs basically was the best technical and commercial proposal we received.

How much have you invested in them?

We spent $25,000 dollars.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project started a year and a half ago and was completed at the beginning of this year. After we implemented the project, they continued helping us with any issues or questions we had. We’re now in charge of maintenance but still contact them once in a while.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We’re still working with the client we developed the platform for and continue to improve it, however, the final result from VAIRIX Software Development was positive. The client is very happy with the platform, highlighting its usability and visuals.

How did VAIRIX Software Development perform from a project management standpoint?

I handled project management and found it very pleasant to work with them. Our requirements were quite vague, but they were open and available to us. We used Redmine to follow up on the project and Slack for daily communication. We also had meetings twice a week, which increased if we had anything urgent.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They were skilled at materializing the technical requirements of the project. Our client isn’t very tech savvy and had very specific requirements. Additionally, translating technical agricultural terms into a web project wasn’t an easy feat, but they managed to do a great job.

Are there any areas they could improve?

We constantly talked about anything that needed improvement during the project. For example, when we needed to accelerate a process, they added an additional programmer. They resolved everything that came up in a timely manner. It was a good experience.

My company is Pragmagenia, and we’re focused on developing solutions to attend to large amounts of people, such as web and mobile applications related to customer and attention services. We originally hired VAIRIX to develop different Ruby on Rails components in the procedures suite.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We used Rails 3.2 and other technologies, including JavaScript and CSS. This development was complex because the platform integrated several modules and the suite has five applications. It has a procedures and forms designer web tool, a billing and accounts management app, a portal for citizens and government officials to work on, the FC Service app server, and the FC Store app. They worked on these five modules which are integrated with Intalio, a BPMS [business process management system].

What is the team composition?

We interacted with a team of around 6–8 people throughout a couple of years. They provided support for the modules post-development, and they’ve also provided technical support, including for other Rails projects. We’re in constant communication.

How did you come to work with VAIRIX Software Development?

It was a coincidence. I was looking for a Rails developer in the Venezuelan market, and found one of Vairix’s founders while searching on different websites. Alvaro [CTO & Co-founder, VAIRIX Software Development] had lived in Venezuela, but was based in Uruguay. After I contacted him, we established a relationship with VAIRIX.

The product metrics showcase the high level at which VAIRIX delivers. The experience has been pleasant on several levels. The interaction with their senior and junior teams is satisfactory, fluid, and friendly, and our conversations are dynamic. Working with them is easy in comparison to experiences I’ve had with other Rails developers.

They assign their best resources to my projects on different levels. They also maintain our relationship by staying focused and dedicated to us. If I contact them for potential opportunities, they work as if I’ve already hired them. They discuss it, dedicate their time, and focus on the work without any contracts. The’re more of a partner than a service provider.

We used Pivotal tracker. For recent projects, we’ve been using a tool which I’ve actually integrated into my own company.

I’m the co-director at MOD in Uruguay. It’s a sales platform in which we develop, design, and manufacture furniture and allow clients to personalize some aspects of the pieces we offer.

What challenge were you trying to address with VAIRIX Software?

Our startup was financed and supported by a state-funded accelerator, so we had demanding timelines that needed to be met. We needed a company to help us deliver and build our unique furniture personalization calculator, which we wanted to sell through the platform.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We got in touch with VAIRIX 3 years ago to help with the web platform, and the following year, we updated it to a mobile app as well. The applications were developed on Ruby on Rails, Android, and iOS.

Since we sell furniture, we wanted to be able to access the backend in order to submit new products, prices, content, and customizations per client. We needed to allow every user that accessed our platform the ability to modify their furniture based on size, colors, etc. Then, the user had to be able to submit their order and the calculator would come up with a price based on their customizations.

What is the team dynamic?

I was personally in touch with 3 or 4 people across meetings but there were some changes throughout the project.

How did you come to work with VAIRIX Software?

We started working with another company but they weren’t able to meet our deadlines and requirements. We looked around again for Ruby on Rails specialists within the country, especially since there are a lot of developers for this technology here. We searched for a vendor that could work with our tight deadline and that’s how we found VAIRIX.

We invested around $10,000–$50,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in March 2014 and launched the platform in June of the same year. They still provide maintenance.

We’re very happy with them and still work together for maintenance and changes to the platform. They have our backs with problems such as credit card issues and such. The platform they built is as important to us as the company itself—without their development work, we wouldn’t exist as an e-commerce site.

We used Google apps—Google Calendar, Gmail, and Google Docs to track schedules and dates.
