I’m the co-founder and CEO of Shirley's Gourmet Popcorn Co.
OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE
What challenge were you trying to address with Pivofy?
Historically, we’ve had an in-store POS system that is completely separate from our online POS system. This meant our rewards systems were different online and in-store, same with processing gift cards. Customers could essentially have two accounts because of this. We hired Pivofy to completely redo our website and POS systems.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
They built us a new website using Shopify, acting as our consultant and programmer for the site. For the creative design, we left that completely up to them. They performed a complete overhaul of our POS system. They’ve organized our products by things like size, flavor, price so we can run numerous reports.
In light of COVID-19, it’s also really important to us that they used the Shopify system that enables customers to order online and pick up in-store. Most importantly for us, they combined the reward system so it’s now the same in-store and online.
What is the team composition?
I work with Dennis (Founder & CEO), but he’s had 3–4 other people jump in and help with the project.
How did you come to work with Pivofy?
We sent out an RFP to numerous firms. Pivofy was very upfront and honest about what they could do. Other firms promised me everything, which felt unrealistic. This team let me know what they could and couldn’t do
How much have you invested with them?
The upfront project was $50,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started working together in March 2020. We’re mostly wrapped up but they’re continuing on as our consultants.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
They’ve done absolutely everything I've wanted them to do. They’ve under-promised and over-delivered. We’ve been in the top 15–20% of new Shopify stores that launched the same week that we did. Given our small size and the number of Shopify stores that are opening, I am ecstatic that we’re ranking there.
How did Pivofy perform from a project management standpoint?
They’ve handled project management very impressively. They ended up having to do more work than I think they anticipated, but they came in right at our budget and delivered everything two months early.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They don’t stop until they get it right and exceed expectations. If there’s a problem, they’re like a dog on a bone. I’ve honestly never worked with a firm like them before; they’re absolutely outstanding. Dennis is the only person I know who works harder than I do— he’s incredible.
Are there any areas they could improve?
I truly have no criticism of them.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Recognize that they are experts. If you know exactly what you want, you might miss out. They are very innovative and know the space they are working in. It makes sense to hire professionals and listen to them.

Our website had gone through a history of 3 agencies so we knew the quality on the backend. Our last agency that specialized in Magento was wonderful (beginning 2 were not so great) but we wanted to move away Magento due to the continuous updates and security patches needed to maintain the website. Shopify offered a more user friendly solution with less friction and apps with easy installation that doesn't require a dev team to implement; so we landed on Shopify. We needed migration of over 12 years of data and over 2900 products with correct redirects without losing invested SEO. The team provided design for UIUX within 2 weeks of signing on the project and migrated everything over within 3.5 months. They were on time with their deliverables as promised and the final project looks amazing. We are still working out some kinks that were discovered post launch which they had been super patient with. The team at Uncap always responded timely and answered questions with professionalism. Highly recommend!

There was a detailed outline of timeline from design to data migration that was presented. The team was able to deliver within their promised timeline. The delays were due to our unexpected occurrences from our end.

This may sound odd but not a fan of the program they use Click up Notifications or Marker.io . This is more of a personal preference. I find the programs cumbersome and not so intuitive. I prefer the platform Teamwork but again this is personal preference.

Our website needed to be a B2B site but also not gatekept and open to the public. We required tiered pricing for our signed in customers as well as quotes and credit limit use for checkout. Uncap was able to accomodate all of these requirements and more with Shopify out of box, apps as well as one iPaaS connector company we utilized to connect our ERP. Uncap delivered the UX, development and testing on time and any delays on launch were either internal or with outside agencies.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?
Uncap was able to deliver on all needs and most wants of the project. Any delays were either due to an App or outside vendor or our internal delays. Uncap took a complex business model and set of requirements and delivered them in an uncoventional platform of Shopify Plus that we chose for multiple reasons. Before even starting the project, Denis at Uncap, went through each of my requirements and laid out if it was doable, if it was native to Shopify, if it required an app and which one they recommend, or if custom work was needed. Uncap was recommended by Shopify, and we couldn't be happier.

Uncap laid out the timeline and project in a PM tool that was tracked and recorded daily as well as having weekly meetings on the status of the project. Their response time on any question, concern or issue was within a business day.

Uncap not only knows B2B and Shopify Plus well, but they outlined the project and did not "nickle and dime" us on anything that came up along the way. We had a great Project Manager, Adam and Denis, the Founder & Pricipal, was always available for a call or email.

Uncap has partnered with us on development of three Shopify based websites, Ovationriding.com, our B2B, and Centaur Ranch. Each project was unique. Ovation Riding was building the D2C site of an existing brand. It was a complex portfolio and our internal systems and data organization tools were antiquated. The deliverables included creating a seamless shopping experience and a premium brand experience for the consumer. Uncap delivered a fully functional site within 4 months. I first spoke with Denis who was able to quickly drill down on our requirements, offer solutions and return a very reasonable quote. Once we were underway, I dealt with Adam, my dedicated project manager. Adam kept the project running with weekly meetings as well as constant email communication. I was provided with a timeline within my proposal and the UNCAP team stuck to it.
The few delays experienced with my project all stemmed from dealing with the limitations of my older ERP and tax integration, not the UNCAP team. Both Adam and Jack (one of the developers) consistently delivered on function requests, like dropship functionality for our wholesale customers, custom pricing displays and a customized portal for B2B resources.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?
Shopify is markedly different than any other platform I've worked with, but both Adam and Denis demonstrated a deep understanding of working within the Shopify ecosystem from the get-go, which in turn helped me tremendously with aligning the new site with our older business model and work flows. Adam seemingly had a solution for every issue we came across, and if he didn't have one immediately, he was only a few days away from figuring something out.
He has been truly unflappable throughout the entire process. Jo, the designer on my project, very quickly turned around a clean and minimal design that had so much more than the traditional lorem ipsum all over the place. She and her team dug up our old photos and content to create a site that tells a story about the company, the product, and the lifestyle. It was really impressive and only required a few very minor changes.
Are there any areas for improvement or something Uncap Commerce could have done differently?
I have plenty of suggestions for Shopify, but not for UNCAP. They delivered.

Uncap managed the modernization and migration of our website. Our site was 12 years old and had been custom built with hundreds of unique capabilities, based on our needs over the years. We had thousands of products, pages, categories, blogs, etc. The migration was much more complex than most but the folks at Uncap led us step by step through the process.
Denis, Adam and James were our main contacts and they were all great to work with-- always available and responsive to our questions.
