  • It was received late on 09/02/2024
  • The document included competitor research, pain points, user persona, selling points and a distribution overview.
  • The document also called for a Brand awareness campaign. The purpose of this campaign was to build an audience that could be retarget with an app promotion campaign with the intent of lowering cost per install. This was never done. However, we did already have an audience with our Facebook page that was able to be successfully targeted/copied with our Facebook app promotion campaign. So, although this was not done, perhaps it didn't need to be done since we ended up with a lower than expected cost per install.
• App UX/UI/CRO Audit 
  • Deliverable was due on 08/30/2024.
  • The initial document was delivered on 09/02/2024. However we considered this document to be incomplete. The delivered document did not include UX/UI recommendations
  • 09/12/2024 we communicated with the project manager that we did not receive UX/UI recommendations and we were interested in having that completed. 
  • Completed deliverable was not received until 10/11/2024. 
  • Due to the lateness of the deliverable, it was difficult to implement the recommended changes. The recommendations suggest significant visual changes to the app, which would require us to redo much of the marketing collateral.
• Keyword Research

  • SEM Nexus conducted keyword research on several platforms and gave us a report which included the Keywords, likely difficulty of targeting each keyword, and anticipated volume of traffic for each keyword.

  • In addition to being late, the app store description was completed on the WRONG app. We saw this as a clear lack of lack of supervision by the project manager and clear indication that SEM Nexus didn't care about our project since they made such a significant and obvious mistake.
  • The proposal that we signed stated "we will initially create new imagery for the download page using in-app screenshots. From there, we will continue A/B test changes in the description and imagery to boost conversion rates and rankings.
    • No A/B testing was ever done. SEM Nexus only ever sent us 1 version of the app store description (when it was eventually done on the correct app)
• App store Imagery 
  • The proposal that we signed stated "we will initially create new imagery for the download page using in-app screenshots. From there, we will continue A/B test changes in the description and imagery to boost conversion rates and rankings. 
    • No A/B testing was ever done. SEM Nexus only ever sent us 1 version of the app imagery
• Facebook/Instagram Ad creatives 
  • SEM Nexus set up ad creatives for use on Facebook/Instagram advertisement. Some of the ad creatives included obvious grammatical/syntax errors. Although these errors were easy to resolve, we feel that these errors should have been caught and corrected before being sent to us for final review.
• Social Media Marketing 
  • SEM Nexus was to post several social media posts on our instgram & Facebook pages.
  • The initial post was supposed to go live on 10/09/2024. On 10/11/2024, I discovered that the post was not live, as was planned.
• Facebook/Instagram Ad management/optimization 
  • SEM Nexus setup a Facebook/Instagram app promo campaign. The campaign performed better than expected with a relatively low cost per install. We were expecting the project manager to scale up this campaign, due to the effectiveness of the campaign. However, the project manager was reluctant to increase ad spend on this campaign for reasons that were unclear. This seemed to significantly differ from the strategy proposed by the CEO during the initial consultation, which left us confused.
• Apple Search Ads Setup/Management 
  • SEM Nexus did setup an Apple Search Ads campaign based on their keyword research
  • The campaign did not perform as planned. Out cost per install was significantly higher than expected. From our perspective, it seemed like there was minimal action taken to optimize the campaign to reduce the cost per install.
• Scaling of All Advertisements 
  • During our initial consultation, and as it was written in the proposal, we had planned for a ~$15,000 ad spend by the end of the project. 
  • The actual ad spend ended up being only ~$3,500. While we appreciate being under budget, we also only received a small fraction of the total amount of downloads that we were expecting.

      • on 10/11/2024, I noticed that the first scheduled social media post for 10/09/2024 was not live. No one at SEM Nexus was aware of this causing me to have concerns about project management oversight.

    • I feel like this should be a rather simple calculation. The project manager attempted to calculate this number live, during a meeting, and came to an egregiously wrong calculation (~26 organic installs in 2-3 months). The project manager then followed up with an email and calculated 32 organic installs per day, which is again wildly inaccurate.
• Poor response time to inquiries 
  • 11/07/2024 email sent to pause retainer period and adjust ad spend. The project manager did not respond to this email (and 2 other emails requesting a response) until 11/13/2024
  • 11/27/2024 - Email sent to request a video copy of a meeting. Email responded to on 12/6/2024
  • 12/3/2024 - email send requesting feedback on churn rate. Project manager replied 12/6
  • 12/4/2024 - email sent requesting update on Apple Search Ads. Project manager replied on 12/6
• Lack of Oversight 
  • Ad copy/App Description 
    • These deliverables were done on the wrong app, and the project manager did not review the material before it was sent to us.
  • Social Media Post 
    • The first social media post was supposed to go live on 10/09/2024. The project manager did not know that the task was not completed until I brought it to her attention on 10/11/2024.
• Poor Communication with CEO 
  • Unclear strategy 
    • During the proposal the CEO outline a strategy for a $15,000 ad spend in about 6 weeks. The project manager wanted to stay at the current rate of ad spend (~$40/day) for about 2 months before scaling up ad spend. 
• Unprofessional conduct
  • Unprepared for meetings 
    • During several meetings, the project manager seemed utterly unprepared. This didn't happen all the time, but it wasn't an irregular occurrence.
    • One particular instance, the project manager was traveling and tasked the CEO to lead the meeting on 10/10/2024. The CEO was not prepared for the meeting. The CEO was under the impression that the project manager would be attending the meeting (the project manager did not attend the meeting).
  • Unable to adequately schedule meetings 
    • 12/5/2024, the project manager stated that the CEO wanted to take part in the meeting. The CEO was not available at our normal meeting time. The project manager stated that she would get back to me about his availability for a meeting later that day. the project manager never got back to me. I was forced to send a follow-up email to attempt to get the meeting scheduled. The meeting took place 6 days later than it should have further delaying things and harming productivity.

The CEO seems knowledgeable. The CEO also seemed to want to get involved and help at the end of our contract. Unfortunately, it was too little too late, as he waited until literally the last meeting before our contract ended.

Are there any areas for improvement or something SEM Nexus could have done differently?

1. Don't submit a deliverable based on the wrong app to a client.
2. More oversight from project manager to subordinates.
3. Faster response time to emails 
   1. Generally, the response time was adequate. But, there were several instances where getting a response took an inexcusable amount of time.
4. Avoid delaying deliverables
5. Have a consistent strategy between what is proposed and that the project manager will deliver.
6. Be better prepared for meetings.

Due to the feedback we have received from you throughout this project, we have added numerous new systems to improve our quality assurance and scheduling, as those seemed to consistently mark your primary concerns. So I thank you for making us a more detail oriented, timely, and better agency.

Now in regards to the ad spend, I do want to emphasize we achieved a scalable cost per user acquisition at less than half of the average cost I had initially projected for you, and were poised to spend the remainder of your ad budget very efficiently within the span of an upcoming 1-2 months to reach our target download goals before you terminated. Given just a little more time, we would have quite literally achieved over twice the results the initially promised.

The only reason why the ad budget was not spent in full during the initially proposed timeframe was so that it could be spent efficiently, it was in your benefit and I've done my best to communicate that throughout our engagement. This is precisely why, per what you mentioned, the performance was good.

Above all, on a personal and even professional level, I really just wish you communicated all of this with me just a week ago, as your app was performing phenomenally well, and we were poised to achieve amazing results right before you pulled the plug.

We successfully pivoted from our app developer to take both the development and marketing of our app to SemNexus. Best decision we've made! Key deliverables to date have been the app and marketing of the app, both of which are in progress.

The team consistently has done what they said they were going to do, when they said they were going to do it. After a very disappointing app build using another company, we've been blown away with the constant communication and updates on our project.

It has been seamless working with them, and because we are not super high tech as far as all the technical elements of the build, they've given us high level communication we are very comfortable with. They've worked with our vendor to set up a complex API and have handled all elements of the project without us having to reach out for updates or having to get involved.

Everything has been on time, and all communication is responded to quickly. Mike and Marco have been extremely receptive to our needs, and always respond to emails promptly. If ever we have further questions, they have offered to jump on a call to clarify. They always make us feel like a top priority.

We were a little intimidated at first hiring a company based in Manhattan, as we thought they might be out of our budget. After the initial meeting with Mike, we knew we had to work with them because his style of communication is very much like ours. He is honest, helpful and to the point. Within moments, we knew he was very bright as he pinpointed our needs immediately.

Within just a few weeks of hiring SemNexus to manage our app marketing, we realized we should have hired them for development. Mike was open to the idea, and put us in touch with the CTO Marco. Their ability to meet deadlines and communicate consistently has been a lifesaver for us when we're truly trusting that our vision for our app becomes all that we hope it to be.

Wiam, our campaign manager, had sent us a marketing strategy first, then did some keyword research for us and audited our website. Once that was done, she set up Google Analytics and started the ad campaigns on Facebook and Google. We also used Smartlook to check user behavior and Adscapsule to monitor campaigns

• Sales are up! We’ve been seeing a pretty consistent upward trend in sales ever since they started their ad campaigns with us.
• A lot more traffic to our site.

They started the project off with a marketing strategy to tell us about our target audience. Then they put together a keyword research sheet for us to see where we should place our budget. Finally, they setup a Google Ads campaign for us to cover all of our keywords, and set up Google Analytics to review performance.

I personally did not have any bad interactions with SEM Nexus. They were easy to work with, and I plan to continue working with them for a while. No improvements are needed at this time!
