We had an outdated website. As the company is expanding to other states, we needed a new website that would automate most of the backend tasks. We have several type of users that need to be taken into consideration.

They took the time to understand the company’s needs and looked into the old website as well. They offered a very thorough description of what they were going to do and a competitive budget.

We had several meetings in which they looked to understand what the company’s needs were exactly. Afterwards they created a path to completion. We started with the flow of the website, design and then execution. They tested to make sure everything was bug free.

The initial meetings were with the account manager and the project manager. Then the PM took over and she would bring people as needed during the execution of the project. The PM is top notch!

We wanted to automate the backend of our website. This is a critical step in our expansion. Now, we have what we wanted in a very sleek easy to navigate way.

We had several meetings with the project manager. We were in constant conversation through messages, emails or video calls. The fact that they were in Ukraine was never a problem.

They for once stayed in budget (very rare these days) and delivered a top quality product.

I wanted to take my existing WordPress site and create a mobile web app.

Onix-Systems has built a mobile web app from scratch using Vue.js. The team has created user personas, designed the UI/UX, and developed the app. They’ve used Figma for the design components, which include a new logo, color scheme, and other elements. 

Users can access videos and complete workouts through the app. They can also log their reps, sets, body weight, and other data points.

I’ve worked with three people: Andriy (Project Manager), Maryna (Project Manager), and Alla (Account Manager).

I found them on Upwork and looked at their reviews. After scheduling a call with their project manager, we decided to move forward with the partnership.

We’ve spent around $80,000. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in July 2022 and launched the web app in January 2023. Our partnership is ongoing.

Since launching the app, we’ve seen 330 user sign-ups, which is great. I’m super happy with the work Onix-Systems has delivered. 

How did Onix-Systems perform from a project management standpoint?

Onix-Systems has been top-notch across the board. They use Miro to manage the project, and everything is in line with my expectations. We communicate via email, Slack, and Google Meet.

I’ve been most impressed by their level of communication and timelines. They communicate effectively and are outstanding at completing tasks quickly.

Our budget has increased, but that’s my fault because I've added items to the project scope.

What challenge were you trying to address with Onix-Systems?

We didn’t have the technical expertise in-house, so we were looking for a development team that could act as an extension of our company.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Onix-Systems handles our application development work. They use Java and Sprint Boot for backend development, as well as Flutter and various third-party integrations for frontend development. Additionally, they’ve helped us develop a web-based administration console using Vue.js. Initially, Onix-Systems brought one of their experts to help us define the solution’s specifications, prioritize the functionalities we needed to implement, and validate our concept. 

Ours is a youth banking app, so the main features of our app are on the backend. It’s fully integrated with a banking-as-a-service provider who helps us with our card processing and financial transactions. This app is available for Android and iOS.

The app is very similar to other neobanking apps, allowing clients to monitor their transactions, balances, and cards. It also lets them control their cards by setting restrictions or allowing them to block them. Within it, we’ve also included a referral program where people earn money for referring their friends.

What is the team composition?

We currently work with two full-time developers, a QA engineer, and a UI/UX designer. Still, Onix-Systems scales their team up and down as needed. In the past, we’ve worked with up to three frontend developers and three backend developers, and we’ve brought Vue.js developers to help us with the administration console as required.

How did you come to work with Onix-Systems?

I found them on Upwork. Initially, I wanted to build a very small app to test the market, and I was having issues finding a partner who could code in Java. Thus, they reached out to me and told me that they could do the front- and backend development work for me, which was great because I didn’t want to have two separate teams. After they completed the app, we continued working with them.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent around $192,000 so far.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in October 2021, and our engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We don’t have quantitative metrics regarding Onix-Systems’ work because they simply work as an extension of our team. Still, the level of expertise they’ve brought to the table to support our development efforts is the main success factor for us to continue working together. Our app recently went into the VISA payment system, which was our goal.

How did Onix-Systems perform from a project management standpoint?

Onix-Systems has performed very well, and their price is very competitive. Even though they’re based in Ukraine, their English level is amazing. Additionally, their QA is excellent, so they’ve fixed every issue before launching the app. The project manager from their end is also great; she stays on top of everything and is very organized.

I’m very involved in the project, so we have daily meetings on Google Meet — as I said, they act like part of our team. They use Jira for project management, and we use Slack as our main communication tool. Still, we can jump on an additional Google Meet call if we need to talk to them.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Everything Onix-Systems does is impressive, but their English level is their best asset. Additionally, they’re very communicative and adaptive to change, and they always explain things to me that I don’t understand.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can’t think of anything they could improve on.

I am the CEO of a Software development company headquartered in Connecticut.

We wanted to create an educational app to help kids learn reading comprehension, for a client/investor interested in this space. We needed it to be fun and engaging, with 3D environments as well as some 2D graphics, and to use speech recognition and track the child's progress.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

We searched online for developers and spoke with several. We chose this developer for the ability to implement our ideas as well as supply ideas and solutions of their own. They also had great communication skills, flexibility, and a wide array of experience with relevant projects.

We provided the team with a detailed design document at first, and visual designs, and they implemented what we needed in Unity. As we progressed, we had additional features requests and more and more complex versions, and the team continued to deliver. They also became more and more involved in the process of designing the details of the app functionality, as they were providing great ideas and solutions themselves. They also incorporated data analytics, while maintaining necessary user privacy for kids. They developed a backend where user registration can be securely stored, and also a database where educational content can be stored and edited and displayed in the game on the fly. They also created web access for our clients to access that. We eventually moved the visual design to their team as well, since they showed they did great work on that end too and it made sense to consolidate.

We had a project manager at all times, as well as ongoing contact with all developers working on the project.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

Our app MVP was delivered at high quality to the clients/investors and made them very happy. They continued to fund additional development due to the great results and great value the team provided. We are continuing to work with them to add more content and mini-games to our educational app. It has already been soft launched on the app store, and a bigger launch with more marketing efforts behind it will be coming soon, once we add some more content to the app and get some more feedback from our current testers.

The project management was very flexible, with clear communication and a willingness to meet client's needs. We had easy communication via tools like skype and Trello, both with the project managers and with the developers.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

They do great app development work, and they bring their own ideas and suggestions to the table. Both the project managers and the developers are very forthcoming with ideas, realistic timelines and suggestions. They are true partners who take initiative and clearly care about the project.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

In one or two cases, it might have been useful to know further ahead of time when a developer is going on vacation or becoming briefly unavailable due to other projects. But having said that, I think this is understandable too, given that our projects often ended up growing in scope and timeline. And to their credit, any time we were in a pinch, they offered additional developers who could help. So we're very pleased.

I am a Co-Founder of a SaaS company focused on digital marketing services. The mobile app platform allows for the personalized creation, optimization and analytics of Google, Facebook and Instagram ads.

We wanted to complete the development of a mobile app for users to obtain our digital marketing services. While we had very initial code, designs and project vision, our goal with Onix was to develop a fully functioning mobile app for users and admin panel for internal use.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

We used the company Aloa to find, interview and hire Onix. Understanding Aloa's vetting process, meeting with the Onix team to gauge their understanding of the defined project, and discussing estimates with the team ultimately led to us confidently starting the partnership with Onix.

We had a number of introductory and discovery meetings early on to discuss our goals, objectives and deadlines with the project. We provided the team with early code, app designs, app logic and backend logic. Within 1 week, the team delivered an already much-improved test version of the iOS and Android apps.

Throughout the project, the team provided detailed and consistent updates on app progress and delivered an approved and launched app within the App and Google Play Stores. The app features and builds include push notifications, camera integration, support desk, and a number of third-party APIs. We continue to work with the team across app development and feature builds.

We were assigned:

At times during our project, resources have varied to include part time and DevOps positions.

Within 4 months, a fully functioning approved app was launched in the App Store and Google Play Store. Within the first week of launch, the app saw over 100 downloads, and an aggregate 5-Star rating.

The project manager has been easy, responsive and organized to communicate with. While status meetings occur throughout the week, any messages or emails outside of meetings are clear and have quick response times.

The team's capabilities and knowledge in the mobile app space have been incredibly impressive. Additionally, their clear communication and quick response have resulted in efficient project management and completion.

An area we've improved together throughout the project is centralizing communication.

We needed a partner to communicate openly and that would reliably deliver quality work. Communications has always been smooth with managers at Onix and without a doubt a better experience than most of our previous contractors.

The client usually explains in non-technical terms what they require. I then translate it into something that is mostly ready to be given to developers directly. Then Onix usually split the tasks into several revisions. They send me regular revisions and either jump on the next features or implement my feedback or the client's feedback.

I worked with 2 managers and 3 developers. Usually, in voice meetings, someone would share their screen and we would discuss openly, while managers are taking notes.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

As our projects are mostly about delivering interesting features in highly unique projects, it is hard to provide any measurable outcomes. However, I can say Onix always delivers what is asked or is very close to it within the first revision. They always deliver quality work with no glaring issues or lack of QA.

We mostly communicate through Zoho Cliq (my choice). They are timely to answer and whenever there is a pause in communication, it's always waiting on me. We mostly communicate via chat and revision documents, but once a while and whenever I ask, we do voice meetings, usually to share screen.

They always have an elegant way of achieving the desired results. Over the projects, some more challenging stuff was required and they delivered.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

The developers are for the most part not very fluent in spoken English. Written communication with developers is perfectly fine and managers who handle most of the communication are very fluent but in screen share meetings, there have been a few occasion when developers asked questions to clarify what was needed and sometimes it felt like language was getting in the way.
