Stanford University: What if we could use technology to overcome your industry’s challenges?
The client
A team led by Stanford Medicine University aimed to mitigate the constant decrease of response rates in surveys used for medical research. As a possible solution, they evaluated the use of mobile applications to facilitate and motivate subjects to answer.
The challenges
Our responsibility was the design and development of mobile applications for data collection including the definition for paradata and data visualizations for researchers. Everything had to be easy to use and safe by HIPAA compliance standards. As well, they aimed to evaluate the amount of repeated responses motivated through push notifications mechanism.
The solution
We built two mobile applications, for Android and iOS, and two monitoring dashboards to assess the amount of responses and subscriptions, as well as to evaluate the investment in advertising and the amount of app downloads.
The data for the dashboards was obtained from sources including Facebook API, Google Analytics API, Medable APIs (Backend), Google Maps API, among others. As well, we developed and ran machine learning algorithms to improve the data analysis such as identifying geolocation patterns, new clusters, etc.
The apps had gamification features to keep subjects motivated to complete the surveys.
The result
The project had really positive outcomes. The developed apps helped improve response rates on surveys, and one of the monitoring dashboards allowed to compare the costs involved in answering through social media compared to traditional methods.
In the numbers
-
The cost of downloading was reduced 4 times when using social networks versus using the traditional ABS method.
-
Participants recruitment’s rate through social media was 3 times the traditional ABS method.
-
The survey response rate was twofold in comparison with methods previously measured.

Kuru Footwear: From challenged sales to record revenue in 2 months
The client
Kuru is an online-only footwear retail store funded in 2008. In 2018 Kuru migrated their Magento 1 store into a new Magento 2 platform. The build was problematic and had Kuru struggling with the site for 2 years. Issues were found all around including the checkout having a direct impact in sales. Overall, the malfunctions were having a heavy toll on Kuru’s revenue that needed to be urgently fixed.
The challenges
Working on a site developed by a different company always brings challenges. There is a learning curve to understand how the system was architected, with what purpose, and using which tools. Doing so on a site with issues that had a direct hit in revenue meant we had to deliver results faster than usual. The backlog of tasks that Kuru had lined-up was long and would take a significant workload to deliver completely. The client was also cautious about the investment since cash flow was not at its best.
The solution
Kuru was given a small team of certified Magento developers that could deliver quick solutions to problems on a daily basis. With a part-time assignment, our team was able to tackle multiple items every day and deliver weekly progress with improvements. Really soon, Kuru started to see more stable traffic, conversions, and revenue.
The result
Within little time, Kuru had reached a point in which the site could provide as it used to. By the 6 month mark of working with us, they noticed they were on their way to hit record revenue figures for the year. Additionally, costs of development had dropped enormously making our partnership extremely profitable. With such tangible results they started to gain trust on us and asked for more services including design, analytics services, and QA.
In the numbers
-
Conversion rate improved 33% in 2020 versus 2019.
-
Site speed improved 13.44% in 2020 versus 2019.

University of Michigan: Improving quality of life through technology
The client
The University of Michigan’s Clinical Pharmacy Department was in development of an application that detected and monitored chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy on cancer treated patients. This was done by analyzing how subjects walked – particularly gait and balance – and their finger coordination. We were invited to develop version 2 of the iOS app and its integration to the Medable platform that lived in the backend.
The challenges
Thanks to iOS we were able to leverage Apple Research Kit for the assessments. However, this offered certain limitations on how we could customize the functionalities and workflow. Apple Research Kit constrained us to certain flows that did not match the client requirements.
The solution
In order to correctly align their needs with the possibilities, we took the project through a workflow design that clearly defined the screens and buttons – including their functionality – of the full application and made a complete review with our counterpart to get on the same page. This allowed us to mitigate the risk of having rework later which would have meant cost and time overruns.
The result
The project was developed within the scheduled time and within budget although having to agree on functional requirements during the development phase. We are currently planning with the University of Michigan the development of future projects to allow them to push their research to new levels.

How can Healthcare be revolutionized? CareAngel does it through Al and Voice
The client
It is an Intelligent Virtual Nurse Assistant that uniquely manages population health engagement at scale based on technologies such as AI to provide continuous healthcare management. In addition to this, it monitors and communicates with every patient from chronic and acute conditions in order to accomplish disease prevention.
The challenge
We collaborated with the client from the inception of the idea, working together to define the business needs,to identify the ideal technology for them, and adapt the solution for each new healthcare customer.
We built Careangel, an Intelligent Virtual Nurse Assistant that uniquely manages population health engagement at scale based on technologies such as AI to provide continuous healthcare management.
In addition to this, the product was built to communicate with and monitor every patient suffering from chronic and acute conditions in order to accomplish disease prevention.
Presently, we continue working on recurrent improvements on the technology that allow CareAngel to set itself apart
The solution
In order to accomplish a successful project we needed to move fast enough to get up to speed with their live site and be flexible enough to attend a moving list of requirements. To do this we used an agile methodology with a team of nine people. Agile allowed us to tackle the requirements in a more organized way and adapt to the changes as they were presented. By the time we were close enough to flipping the switch, we proposed a freeze in their current site that let us prepare for a steady migration. This was organized into a full two-week sprint that concluded in a smooth transition.
The result
Nowadays, CareAngel is being used by some of the main companies in the health area such as United Health Group (UHG), Elite Health and AARP, among others. Using CareAngel meant a significant change in this area because it allowed these companies to generate a new experience in patient care, efficiency, and cost savings.

mEMR: What if you could know if your product would work before you invested your budget in it?
The client
A group of entrepreneurs approached us to help them put together a technology piece that would power their new business idea for the healthcare sector. It was fresh and well thought, although there was not much more than words and a few diagrams to describe it. The request was to make a proposal of work to get the app up and running. In turn, we intended to go a step back, before materializing the app, to see how users responded to the client’s idea and improve it upon the feedback.
The challenges
Despite our long experience in the healthcare sector, this project, which was led by an MD, put us to the test on how well we could build a solution that solved many pain points for physicians. The main challenge was to get in the shoes of the user and truly understand the complexities of their day-to-day work.
The solution
To achieve our goal, we needed to feel the pain of the potential user. The key to the solution was making the appropriate research. In this case, we aimed to analyze the workflow of our users, understanding the data they work with, relating directly with their challenges, and realizing the sensitivity of their daily decisions. This was achieved by a thorough discovery process that consisted in interviews, data research, user personification, among other activities.
The result
Our delivery product allowed them to visualize the product and feel the experience of the workflow that was put together for a fraction of the project budget. By doing this, we also anticipated problems and corrected them before writing a single line of code. Furthermore, the client was able to execute a testing phase using no more than the delivered prototypes, which greatly facilitated the product validation within its potential users. Ultimately, this process saved the client a significant amount of time and money by allowing them to visualize what needed to be done before starting a development phase.

Lentes Plus: Renewing your sites to improve your conversions, productivity, and your users’ experience.
The client
Lentesplus is an online contact lens store that operates in Colombia, Mexico, Chile, and Argentina. Their team hired us to upgrade their e-commerce platform. They were using Magento Open Source 1.9 and they intended to upgrade to Magento 2 Commerce Cloud to improve the functionalities for their clients as well as for themselves, and ameliorate productivity.
The challenge
This Ecommerce project was already technically demanding because of the scale and complexity. It consisted of four sites (one for each region) with multiple integrations and unique features for each. Additionally, the previous website was in constant evolution making it hard to ever catch-up with an up-to-date feature offering.
The result
A project that was technically and methodologically demanding was tackled with great client satisfaction and ended with a swift go-live. Many months later we continue our efforts together with LentesPlus to improve their site and boost their sales.
In the numbers
The website conversion rate passed from 1.2% to 3.5% immediately after the new site went live.
Number of tickets received by the client service center decreased by 40%, which means that the improvements in the platform allowed users to sort everything out by themselves.

Mosca leveraged Onetree to reposition itself as the leader in digital commerce for office and school supplies
The client
Mosca has been the leader in office and school supplies in Uruguay since 1888. Today, it holds over 20 stores across the country. Before coming to Onetree, their website had issues that were costing the company sales. These included problems at checkout, incompatibility with extensions, and limited control of the site. Facing this reality, Mosca had a clear view of the next steps that needed to be taken in terms of ecommerce. Probably the most important one being the lack of platform and partner to help them reach this new level.
The challenges
As a leader in the office and school supplies, Mosca needed an ecommerce store that would provide speed, scalability, and a superior user experience that went with their overall value proposition. This reached the B2C experience as well as the B2B that should offer specific wholesale capabilities to expand their digital presence. In addition to this, the company had an internal ERP that needed to connect to the ecommerce store and stay up to date on product information, customers, and orders.
The solution
We worked together with Mosca to design a new solution based on Magento. It allowed us to easily integrate with the ERP and solve the communication between the systems. Additionally, we introduced a B2B specific site powered by Magento Commerce’s B2B module so as to position the company at a new level with their wholesale customers.
The result
Mosca’s new ecommerce site ramped up their customer experience: it made it more stable and better performing. The “school gear lists” functionality makes buying school materials easier for parents since it allows schools to pre-select the materials that pupils will need for each class. In turn, parents can add to cart all the required materials in one move. All this made online purchases more fluent, practical, and beneficial for Mosca’s clients. Not only did their website stop having issues that were an obstacle to the company’s sales, but it also improved.

the review
A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I am the CEO of the Software Testing Bureau, a company that offers testing services.
What challenges were you trying to address OneTree?
We hired OneTree for their development services.
What was the scope of their involvement?
We created a tool for test automation, and OneTree was responsible for the frontend development. The main goal of this tool was to allow non-technically-savvy users to perform test automations themselves. To achieve that, we were looking to create a nice, intuitive interface that could be used by anyone. They use React to build the platform.
What is the team composition?
We’ve worked with about six people in total. There was a senior developer, a junior developer, and a UX lead. Later on in the project, two more developers and a project manager joined.
How did you come to work with OneTree?
We are both based in Uruguay, so we knew about their company and their experience with building frontend technologies. Further, we’d partnered with them in the past, in a project where we actually had provided them services, so it seemed like a good idea to work with them again, this time as clients.
How much have you invested in them?
We’ve spent about $50,000.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started working with them in March 2019 and the engagement is ongoing.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
We are still in the process of finalizing the tool before sending it to market. However, all of the comments we’ve received thus far are great. The product is intuitive and visually-appealing, two of the most important factors to us. When we do launch it, we have great sales expectations. As our sales cycle grows, we expect to continue working with OneTree to provide updates and new developments.
How did OneTree perform from a project management standpoint?
We’ve used different communication channels throughout the project. We’ve also had weekly follow up meetings. Our technical teams are in touch every day. So far, everything has gone smoothly.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Their commitment to deliver a quality product has been evident throughout the entire process.
Are there any areas they could improve?
No, there’s nothing that comes to mind. It was a great first experience for us.

Introduce your business and what you do there.
Lentesplus is an online eyewear store operating in Colombia, Mexico, Chile, and Argentina. I am the company’s founder and CEO.
What challenges were you trying to address OneTree?
We hired them to upgrade our e-commerce platform.
What was the scope of their involvement?
We were using Magento Open Source 1.9 and we wanted to upgrade to Magento 2.3, the enterprise cloud version. We were looking to improve the functionalities both for our clients and ourselves, and to improve our productivity with this. They used an agile methodology, which was key to the success of the project.
What is the team composition?
We worked with around eight or nine people.
How did you come to work with OneTree?
We had a selection process where we interviewed companies that were recommended by Magento, and OneTree was among them. They ended up being the ones selected in the process because of their transparency.
We felt that we were able to communicate better with them than with other agencies. We were also impressed with their flexibility. They were more willing to adapt to our needs and to the particularities of the project.
How much have you invested in them?
We’ve invested around $250,000 USD.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started working with them in November 2018, and we continue working with them on an ongoing basis.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
Our conversion rate passed from 1.2 to 3.5 immediately after the project was implemented. Additionally, the number of tickets received by our client service center decreased by 40%, which means that the improvements in the platform allowed our clients to sort everything out by themselves.
How did OneTree perform from a project management standpoint?
At some point in the project we had to change the methodology, but that was caused by inner changes in our company which forced us to delay the project. They were very flexible and understanding. They showed their commitment to work with us as a strategic partner more than just a service provider.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Something that stands out about them is their communication. It’s always is fluid and transparent. That is very relevant when you have projects this big. Working them gave me peace of mind.
Are there any areas they could improve?
For very specific projects, they are short on developers. For example, we would like to implement PWA into our platform and they might not have enough developers with expertise in this technology.
A technically skilled team, OneTree has been instrumental in developing the tool. Though it has yet to be launched, internal stakeholders are pleased with the products usability, and are confident about its sales performance. The team’s professionalism and communication make them lasting partners.
