I’m the CEO of an independent retail cannabis collective. We run data programs for independent retailers in the Canadian cannabis market and provide additional member benefits for our partners.

What challenge were you trying to address with Novatore Solutions?

Part of our collective’s strategy was to build a data portal where we could collect all of the data that we reconcile and translate it into industry analytics we could provide to our partners. We wanted to give all partners a robust feel of the cannabis retail industry.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We had a discovery phase with Novatore Solutions’ team, where we talked about the general scope of the project and the portal’s requirements. Novatore Solutions is developing the portal from scratch using PostgreSQL, React.js on the frontend, and Power BI for analytics. 

The first phase Novatore Solutions has worked on is developing the ability for retailers to get all their data directly into our system. Then, Novatore Solutions developed the portal’s ability to reconcile the data since the reports come in multiple formats. We needed to reconcile everything that our retailers purchased and outline a statement for both parties: the producer paying for the data and the retailer submitting the data. 

Novatore Solutions developed a reconciliation engine portion that generates a clean report with relevant metrics for our producers and retailers. The engine is able to reconcile the information from producers against the retailers’ offers, show the value of those offers, and generate a statement for the retailer and an invoice for the producer. 

Novatore Solutions is currently developing the UI where users will visualize all their analytics. They’re also working on API connections into all of the POS providers so that retailers can pull their information directly from our system instead of uploading their data each time. 

What is the team composition?

We started working with one full-time developer, one part-time QA specialist, and one half-time project manager. Now, that team has expanded to three developers, a full-time QA resource, and a full-time project manager. 

I’ve also interfaced with different Novatore Solutions specialists, from senior developers to the CEO. Different team members have been involved with my project. 

How did you come to work with Novatore Solutions?

I had worked on another project with them in the past. Initially, we found them online while searching for different providers. We met with different service providers before choosing Novatore Solutions. 

How much have you invested with them?

We've invested around $50,000 with Novatore Solutions so far.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Novatore Solutions in May 2022, and our partnership is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Novatore Solutions has helped us process and reconcile data in a very quick and seamless manner, which was our main challenge.

We're getting an average of 2 million lines of data per month from all of our retailers, which then has to be reconciled, and Novatore Solutions has completed this task with a lot of work. Although the reconciliation engine is what has taken longer to develop, it has worked excellently. 

In the first month, it took us about three weeks to reconcile all the data. Now, retailers have one week to upload their information, and then our reconciliation engine gives them the results within a day. 

How did Novatore Solutions perform from a project management standpoint?

Novatore Solutions has met deadlines 90% of the time. Sometimes, they’ve been a little delayed, but we expected it considering the complexity of our project. However, when Novatore Solutions knows they’ll miss a deadline, they let us know in advance, which is really helpful.  

We have weekly calls through Google Meet and sometimes daily calls depending on the phase of the project. Novatore Solutions has been extremely flexible and adapted to our timeline, which we appreciate.

We use Git for project management, and we also have a WhatsApp chat group where we communicate issues that arise during the project or questions that may need to be answered quickly. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

I’m most impressed with Novatore Solutions’ pricing, availability, and flexibility. The projects they’ve worked on before are similar to ours; we’ve found a lot of synergies, and that’s why we chose them.  

Are there any areas they could improve?

The only issue we’ve had with Novatore Solutions was early on, during the first cycle, in terms of data reconciliation. We should have spent more time making sure the documentation was right. However, I understand this since our work process is not simple, and this is a complex project. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I recommend you be clear about what you need from Novatore Solutions in terms of deliverables. Another suggestion would be that if you’re in a different time zone than Novatore Solutions, make sure you’re clear from the beginning about work availability so that your team is on the same page.

I am the CEO of AirBolt. We are innovators and leaders in the smart access and asset tracking market with first in world smart lock and GPS products.

We hired Novatore to build our next generation web server front end however, after a few months working with them we handed over the backend development to them as well.

We have worked with a multitude of developers over time across different projects. Novatore was a recommendation to AirBolt through a partner company. We then conducted interviews, got a cost estimate and then gave test tasks. Novatore excelled in all parts of the process and were also cost competitive.

The project entailed setting up our new web platform for both our B2C and B2B customers. This is a large undertaking involving everything from a bespoke Subscription System, integration with cellular providers, security deployments, encryption, VPN's, location services and so on. This is an ongoing project with multiple future stages planned

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Novatore have developed a highly capable and robust web platform which have had great initial impressions during our beta testing. The QA team has been strong and helped us ensure a quality outcome.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

The team is extremely available and very capable of handling last-minute requests, schedule changes and scope changes. This was very important for us and one of the reasons we continue to work with the team as they essentially act as an extension of our core team. We all communicate daily using Slack, and video calls over Google Meets.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Flexibility, skill set and a huge variety of capability which is rarely found under one roof. Our requirements were unique and not many companies have the ability to under take such work.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Really happy with the team and any feedback is taken on board really quickly so we don't have anything else to recommend.

A custom software application using MVP agile approach. Our goal was to create an easy to use software with as few actionable steps as possible.

We had previously used this vendor, and have a long time business relationship.

They created a Laravel Software with the front end built on React. We had many different stages to our project - we first started with the discovery phase and then began to build our ideas from there. We had constant communication throughout the whole project and updated with the development team where we saw fit.

There were 2 people that worked with our team, one was a project developer and the other was a senior developer.

We communicated daily and primarily used WhatsApp and Zoom. They were always receptive to our feedback, and were very willing to provide us with their own suggestions.

They were very receptive to our feedback and always made sure we were happy with our project. They were also great with communication and being available when we had questions or needed help.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

The work that they provided was good however forward thinking communication could have been improved upon.

They’re helping develop a custom software solution that is catered towards the construction industry. I came up with my own business requirements and I engaged with Novatore to essentially bring that to life. I put the user interface concepts together and engaged with them to help me get that product to a position where I could then start demonstrating it to clients.

Depending on the phase and nature of our engagement I have had interactions with up to six people from their team including but not limited to development, engineering, QA, project management, etc.

We’re happy with it so far, but we are still pre-launch so I can’t comment on the finished product or its impact on my business.

They’re easy to communicate with and have kept to deadlines. We have our weekly and bi-weekly progress calls, and then we have a set of milestones that we track on a weekly basis. It’s more of an agile framework.

The most impressive thing about them is the relationship and our ability to connect with them as well as their feedback and responsiveness.

So far, it has been good. However, the engagement is ongoing so there isn’t much to comment on right now.

The final product is fantastic and is exactly what we were looking for. I’m thrilled with the work they delivered.

They were very receptive to our feedback and addressed any changes I requested immediately. To accommodate my needs, they provided timely suggestions, too. Their team was always available and promptly met all of their deadlines. A part of why the product was exactly as I hoped it would be is because they asked the right questions throughout the process.

Their responsiveness was excellent—every email had an answer by the next day. We worked together very well.

We found Novatore on a job board, and ran several agencies through a web development test. Novatore was one of the few developed a solution with the tech stack required and of the highest quality

Novatore is very good at working with our development team and business analyst in an agile method. We had a core business requirements document that evolved as the project progress with novatore, and novatore was very responsive in Q&A, presenting their work, and just generally ontop of things.

I hired them to build out the backend of my platform and to create some demo apps.

What was the scope of their involvement?

The project consisted of very light documentation. Their team developed the backend of the platform from scratch in .NET. They then migrated the data over to MEAN.JS. Their work involved the construction of the product’s overall architecture, including its analytics functionalities.

What is the team composition?

At the project’s peak, I was working with up to 5 developers. The team size fluctuated depending on the stage of the project. One manager oversaw the project.

My cousin knew of them and recommended them to me.

We started working together in 2015 and finished up in 2018. Although the project’s wrapped up, I’m planning on taking them up again for future work.

They performed well. They delivered several iterations at every stage, which ensured that I was happy with the final versions.

How did Novatore Solutions Pvt. Ltd. perform from a project management standpoint?

They used Asada to track project progress and consistently checked for bugs. They met most deadlines, but when they didn’t, they completed the work free of charge. I really appreciated that, because I felt that I wasn’t being taken advantage of.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Initially, I wasn’t impressed with their work. Having worked with others, though, I realized that they’re pretty good. They deliver well at a cost-effective rate. I think the value of their package offering is what distinguishes them.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There could’ve been some improvement in the initial design mockups. In the beginning, they failed to ask questions, but now, they ask the right questions and have improved in development and delivery. I find that iterating is critical to the process.

Make sure you give them a detailed project brief, because that helps them a lot.

We are a group of companies that have been family-owned for 100 years. We are in the construction business and the real estate business.

I have the title of Chief Strategy Officer, and I work amongst all our businesses trying to optimize our returns across a variety of fronts. In particular, we’ve been working with Novatore on the real estate side.

What challenge were you trying to address with Novatore Solutions?

One of our divisions needed a new system. Although I have some expertise in building technical platforms, I needed some engineering help, and so I reached out to Novatore to help with code. I knew what requirements were needed, but I needed an engineering team and I wanted one that had the open source knowledge that Novatore has.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

One of our divisions runs a home-flipping operation. They buy houses, renovate them, and sell them here in the Bay area. It’s a very time-sensitive business. You’ve got to be able to move quickly to purchase homes, renovate them quickly, and sell them fast to be able to make the money you intend to make. The company was getting big enough where it couldn’t do the work on spreadsheets anymore. They needed a new system, so we contacted Novatore Solutions, who have been our full engineering development team.

We are in California, so we write the requirements here and then we send them overseas to them. They are very good at being able to understand the requirements, not just from a technical perspective but also from a business perspective. I’ve been impressed with their knowledge of the real estate industry in America even though they don’t live here. Their involvement is mostly around understanding the requirements that are given to them, then building out the technology to stack, testing it to make sure it works and then giving it back to us so that we can test it and then deploy it into our site. We’ve been working on the Amazon Web Services infrastructure, and we’re using all open source technologies, mostly in the MEAN stack and JavaScript-based technologies. They have a variety of tools that they know how to work with, but we’ve been mainly working with a modern development infrastructure. We’re using GitHub for our code repository. It’s a very modern, agile development process using modern open source technologies.

How did you come to work with Novatore Solutions?

I found Novatore on a freelancing website called Upwork. I have sourced many engineers from that website in the past. I have engineers here in the States as well that I trust, so when I source an overseas engineering team, I will give them one project to test them and see what kind of code they do, how quickly they do it, and at what cost. I wanted to build this new product and I needed a team, so I actually sourced a couple different teams from Upwork, gave them projects, and Novatore was by far the best. They were really quick, they knew exactly what we wanted, wrote the stack, were collaborative, made suggestions on how to make it better, and did it on time and on budget. To me, it was a no-brainer to keep working with these guys.

We started working with Novatore around November 2015, and the engagement is ongoing.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

There have been several issues on our side as to why the system hasn’t gotten adopted as it should, so we don’t really have a good history yet of using the application, but that’ll change shortly. These guys are very responsive in doing quick turnarounds.

How did Novatore Solutions perform from a project management standpoint?

They’re really great. We’re using Pivotal Tracker for our project management. We have a dedicated developer, and we bring in one or two others if we need it. Then, the owner of the company is involved in project management, so we’ll have periodic discussions where he’ll bring in his developers and I’ll bring in the users from the American side and we’ll have a discussion around what we need to do to prioritize the roadmap, and then they go execute. They’ve been very helpful in keeping us on track and being collaborative, but really we're the ones driving the agenda and they’re the service guys who are delivering for us.

What did you find most impressive about Novatore Solutions?

They have really great technical expertise, they’re very professional, and they’re very reasonably priced, so that’s pretty much all you can ask for.

Are there any areas Novatore Solutions could improve?

I’ve worked with a lot of these kinds of guys, and I think they are great. They are exactly what we want for developing an initial first product, and I’m happy to have them continue working with us and help us to improve it. If we were to take this product to become something we take out to market and get thousands of customers on it, then Novatore probably wouldn’t be the right company. I would have to hire our own engineers or get a bigger company to support it, but for the first version of a product and maybe even a second, these guys are perfect.
