What I needed from them was to develop a new website – a platform that allows me to release podcasts, do blogging, and hold online workshops. This platform will allow me to connect with users, promote content, and build a members’ area for the website, in which I can promote the services I offer to accounting and investment firms.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
We started off by creating a broad structure and talking about the kinds of content and the aims and goals involved in the project. They then took me through what they thought the best solutions and layout would be. The next phase was putting designs on a test server so I could look at things as they were being built, which let us comment and we iterate on those things. They constantly take feedback, and as I produce content, they start fitting it in around the website, which has a WordPress CMS backend.
At the moment, I'm releasing certain stuff in stage, so there’s a lot of stuff in the backend that’s not visible on the frontend yet. There's going to be systems in place where members can log in, create their own accounts, and can start publishing their own content. It's almost an academy where people can communicate with each other, which takes this beyond a basic website build.

There was a project manager, a backend developer, a frontend developer, and a business development guy that has acted as a point of contact throughout.
How did you come to work with Nimblechapps Ltd?
I used to outsource work to them when I worked for an app development company and we had taken on too much work. Trying to find a good partner was a really painful process actually. We tried countless number companies where either they worked quickly but made too many mistakes, or just had too much of a language barrier.
I always go to Nimblechapps for stuff like this because there's a lot of people that can build a website, but far fewer that can build and develop systems with databases in the backend and all sorts of functionalities.

I've already managed to get more podcasts delivered because of it. Having that presence means that people know what you're up to. I've gotten some interesting speaking engagements through it as well. At the moment, I'm doing some public speaking gigs with pretty big trade organization and membership organizations around the UK.
How did Nimblechapps Ltd perform from a project management standpoint?
We often talk daily, but other than that, it’s just as needed really. It wouldn't be every single day, but they're certainly available for that, if I ever needed them. My plans change quite a lot, but their recommendations and product management is spot on. They never leave you in any doubt of where you stand, and the only thing that’s going to slow them down is the client themselves. It’s very rare that you have to wait on them. It’s usually them waiting on a client to make decisions or provide them with assent.
What did you find most impressive about them?
I've worked with a lot of offshore development firms in the past, and what normally happens is, you’ll set them a brief and they won't collaborate with you. They'll take what they're given and produce what they you want, based on the documentation you've given them. Whereas, with Nimblechapps, you're able to tell them your vision and goals and bring your own ideas the table. If they see a better way of doing something or they think there's a different way of approaching it, they’ll let you know.
Two things that really stand out for me with Nimblechapps are A) their proficiency with English and B) their organization skills and their communication. The latter makes them really easy to work with. When you go out shopping for developers and you want someone to build something for you, everyone will tell you at the start of the project that the requirements are well within their capabilities and means. But Nimblechapps is more consultative. They'll tell you what they think is good about your project, what they would change, and then give you real feedback and input.
If they think you're going down the wrong route they'll tell you so, even though that might be to their detriment. This speaks to their values as a business. They try to help customers launch products and websites that in turn become successful, which increases the likelihood that they’re going to keep spending money with them. Rather than forming a transactional relationship, they’ll invest in your success.
Are there any areas they could improve?
I'd be really hard pushed to find areas of improvement, and I'm not just going to pull one out of the sky for the sake of answering the question. I don’t have anything that I think they really need to focus on at the moment.
Any advice for potential customers?
You need to have a relatively clear idea of what it is you want to build. You’ll get an awful lot more out of your development team, and certainly out of Nimblechapps, if you can give them a decent brief, and a decent understanding of what you’re trying to achieve.
One thing that’s really key in the development world is having a realistic budget. I think Nimblechapps is extremely competitively priced, based on their talent and what they can achieve, so you have to give them a reasonable budget. A lot of people want the moon on a stick for very little money and they don’t understand the complexity of software development. So, if you come to them with a really tight brief, and a really good idea of what you want to build, and you’ve got a budget that matches your expectations, then it’s going to go really smoothly.

In Australia, construction businesses conduct the bulk of their work via phone. In other words, construction businesses will call labor hire businesses, which will then call potential workers and send them to their clients. I felt our labor hire business needed to be online to stand out from our competitors.

What was the scope of their involvement?
I first expressed my required app specifications and designs to them. Once we agreed on a quote, they started developing the app using software that is both iOS- and Android-compatible. I provided them a preliminary app design, and specified that I wanted the app to process client requests immediately, in addition to having a timesheet feature for workers and clients to access.
We exchanged information and thoughts, and they assisted me with app development, informing me of what parts of my design would actually work. I’ve had to reach out to them to complete pieces of the app that they missed, but they typically expect payment first. I’m picky with designs, so I reach out to them frequently.
We mainly use Skype and InVision to communicate. They’ll send me app design concepts and I’ll print screen each version and make my desired adjustments using Photoshop. In this way, we effectively collaborate.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They engage in your project with you and strive to help you. They are patient and make an effort to explain concepts to you. For instance, they’ll tell me if a design I want isn’t functional, and then provide me with alternative options. As a designer with little development knowledge, this is critical.
Are there any areas they could improve?
They could be better at communicating the degree of difficulty for design implementation in the development process. For instance, I’ve had no concept of how easy or hard it has been for them to develop certain features I’ve asked them to work on. I would have appreciated an explanation of their process.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Before hiring them, you should seek guidance from a development advisor that can help you plan out the app you want in its entirety. This way you have the product design from start to finish, and concepts don’t need to continuously change along the way. After all, the developers are aiming to finish the desired product as quickly as possible.

At the moment, the service options are rudimentary, so I wanted to develop a mobile app to facilitate that.
The challenge was to build a playful and engaging app that students would enjoy using. The initial target audience was students at a specific university. The opportunity with this app is to provide a collection of easy options for students. Then campuses and staff can apply feedback to make improvements.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
Nimblechapps initially investigated what I wanted to do. Then they proposed a quote and project scope, including options they could offer within my budget constraints.
The scope entailed full app development and design. Another developer had built a pilot version for me, but Nimblechapps started from scratch. Step-by-step, they built the app, created its design and animations, and integrated them.
They provided Unity app development for Android and iOS. They also developed gamification components that make use of the gyroscope sensors and microphones of devices.
What is the team dynamic?
There was a full team working on the app, with anywhere between 10–20 people at a given time. In the beginning, I communicated with both the project manager and the developer in order to be clear on the details. Later on, I mainly worked with the project manager. We mostly communicated by email.
How did you come to work with Nimblechapps?
I researched a lot of mobile app developers, with the budget being my biggest constraint. I wanted to create a high-quality product while keeping it within an attainable cost.
Nimblechapps presented their proposal to me, and we had multiple phone conversations. They had by far the most detailed approach to my idea and were the most thorough in asking questions. I doubted that the other companies understood what I wanted, but Nimblechapps dug deep until they grasped it completely.
A perfect mix of in-range budget expectations and high quality set them apart and finalized my decision to go with them.

What is the status of this engagement?
We started working with Nimblechapps in August 2017. The app is close to completion. They will handle the launch and provide a 2-month support period post-launch for any issues and bugs. They’re also open to providing any further modifications and enhancements.
RESULTS & FEEDBACK
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
Since the app hasn’t launched, it’s difficult to share results. Multiple versions are complete, and the latest one is close to completion, but there aren’t any metrics.
That said, the app has turned out tremendously well. It functions smoothly without any errors, including the nonstandard features Nimblechapps integrated. Additionally, they tailored the app to my preference for a clean, minimalistic visual experience.
Taking all this into account, they’ve offered extremely competitive prices without compromising on the quality, which is exceptionally good.
How did Nimblechapps perform from a project management standpoint?
They have been extremely responsive. I had more free time in the beginning and could reply to them within seconds. Even though I’m busier now, they continue to answer me within minutes and deliver the work promptly.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Their exceptional skill set enables them to provide a valuable service. The development and design teams have a very good understanding of what users want. They also understand what I am trying to accomplish. When you factor in price as well, it’s an incredible package.
The collaborative experience with them has greatly surpassed expectations. From the beginning, they took my project very seriously and made an effort to understand every detail of the app. This process helped me understand my own ideas better, as they brought up aspects I hadn't thought of before. Communication runs smoothly and they implement my feedback swiftly.
Are there any areas they could improve?
No. I’ve been impressed with their work throughout, and don’t have any critique. We’ve had difficulties due to the nature of the project and working long-distance, but this is not their fault. I would definitely recommend them.

The platform is mostly for use on mobile phones, but you can use it on tablets and desktops as well. They developed the platform using NetBeans. The key features developed into the site are the entry lines and that it would function easily for the user so you don’t have to write in everything again. For example, when you are resetting a loan, sometimes you send a reminder and you want to change that. It came out perfectly.

I tried to get in touch with a lot of different people through Clutch and Freelancer.com. Nimblechapps was interested in this project because they thought it was different and were up for the challenge. They contacted me just because they were interested in the project and no one else did that.
