I’m a product manager at a publishing and learning software company. I am responsible for content strategy, contractor and vendor relations, and product development.

We hired Intetics to help us with content acquisition and development and to build custom software solutions that are compatible with our content.

What were your goals for this project?

I needed an agile, collaborative partner table to work with oftentimes ambiguous or limited specs. By engaging with Intetics, I hoped to mitigate inefficiencies in our publishing workflow. Our main objective is to reduce the time it takes to bring new and updated information to the marketplace.

How did you select this vendor?

During the RFP process, I solicited a proof of concept. I interviewed Intectics’ past clients, as well.

Our methodology involves discovery meetings and requirements gathering sessions for each new endeavor. We tested conversions followed by multiple rounds of QA. The results of QA reviews and feedback formed the basis for our custom tool’s functional specs.

Our iterative development process and feedback loop continuously improve our data structure. Using this methodology also serves to enhance the tools we use to refine content.

What was the team composition?

Intetics assigned us a project manager, content strategist, and three developers who work closely with editorial subject matter experts. This team collaborates with our internal QA team and two of our in-house developers.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

An editorial update before we hired Intetics followed a two-year cycle. With Intetics help, we’ve vastly improved both the quantity and quality of our published content and reduced the typical publishing cycle to about 6-8 months. Thanks to our mutual efforts, we now publish more material faster and at a lower cost.

Intetics role is a critical part of our workflow. They’ve proven to be agile, highly collaborative, and very responsive.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Intetics Inc.’s engineering solutions have always proven efficient, stable, and easy to integrate within our internal workflows. They have also been highly adaptive and willing to pivot to changing requests on our part.

Are there any areas for improvement?

There probably are, but one of the main reasons I enjoy working with Intetics is their ability to generate creative ideas and smart solutions for process improvement.

I'm the founder and chief executive officer.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What business challenge were you trying to address with Intetics?

We were building a new application in the mobile notification space. This was a significant undertaking, as no existing product handled notifications and messaging distribution the way we envisioned. Our goal was to build a niche product that helped companies and entities with a distributed workforce or membership communicate important messages to their constituents quickly and efficiently. We wanted our clients to reach their recipients on any device that they preferred, while ensuring priority delivery that didn't get lost in email clutter or spam filters. Our company is headquartered in Lafayette, Louisianna, with a population of slightly more than 200,000. Finding qualified developers in this area is extremely challenging for us because the unemployment rate in the Lafayette technology sector is less than .5%. Qualified developers are well situated with good jobs, so scaling quickly to build a product of this magnitude is quite literally impossible in our region. Because of this, we knew that we had to go elsewhere to find the right resources. 

SOLUTION

Could you describe the scope of their involvement in greater detail?

During the course of the project (almost 2  years) we scaled almost instantaneously from two developers to about 12 developers and QA specialists and then back down to two again toward the end of the project. They were responsible for the majority of the technical elements, but also supported us when it came to implementing our desired visual design. We managed the project directly and basically took the project from discovery and requirements gathering all the way through development, testing and deployment. 

How did you come to choose Intetics?

We met the folks of Intetics at an Inc 5000 conference in New Orleans. After a few discussions and reference checks, we engaged them to help us build our new product.

Could you share any statistics, metrics or user feedback from this engagement?

I don’t have metrics that could be used to quantify anything they did other than that we thought they did a fine job. We’d get our customers to give us feedback, and we’d fix any bugs and make changes based on their feedback. The guys at Intetics were really good at listening to our ideas and then providing feedback on how to do things better. At the end of the day, with their help, we developed a superior product. There were never any major defects like a security issue; whenever something went squirrelly it was fixed quickly. 

Were you satisfied from a project management perspective?

We were extremely pleased with the caliber of talent Intetics put on our team. The project went smoothly, and the final, underpinning technology is robust, stable and impressive.

We were developing a new product, so the project began with just an original line of code. They introduced us to the agile software development methodology and we would fix any bugs there were along the way. We oversaw the whole project, but they had a project manager and all the developers, so they were fairly self-contained.

We never had any problems with their responsiveness or delayed work. We met with them every morning at 6:30. They were in Ukraine, so we had a nice three hour overlap with them. If something came up, we could fix it in real-time, and it was a very efficient process.

We used Google Hangouts to communicate with them through video conference, and that was critical for us, because we could see everybody on screen. It brought a personal element to it, far better than email communication.

Is there anything that distinguishes Intetics from other providers?

These guys had all of the expertise, and when we said we needed a designer, they were able to get a high-caliber designer within a week and put him on the team. We needed a really sophisticated engineer, and we got a really good engineer quickly.

The quality of Intetics’s engineers and their designers and the speed at which we got them on our team made them a better choice than any company we’ve tried before. They just gave us the ability to ramp up and ramp down really quickly, and we did that multiple times throughout the project. They really became part of our family and our team. Their work was cost effective without sacrificing quality or expertise.

In hindsight, are there areas in which they could improve, or things you'd do differently?

Honestly, I can’t really point to anything. There wasn’t a weak person on the team. Intetics was actually disappointed that they couldn’t give us their top iOS engineer. But the junior guy that they gave us in a matter of three weeks was every bit as good as the top guy, and he wasn’t as expensive either. So I don’t have improvements for these folks.

I’ve been involved in multiple technology startups, often under the name Binary Parcels, Inc., which that helps companies build out their technology infrastructure.

The earliest projects involved building a basic Web presence, and through the years, the projects have grown in complexity and value. I’ve continued to work with Intetics on multiple different projects for multiple different clients.

Could you describe the scope of their involvement in greater detail?

It’s mostly technical labor services. They have assisted and recommended in the design and architecture of solutions, but largely it’s IT [information technology] labor services. Most of their work is custom development and testing. I have limited technical knowledge and need to be able to leverage theirs in tandem with design and strategy.

How did you select Intetics as your solution partner?

I’ve known Intetics since before they were even called that, [back when] they were called Web Space Station. So, it’s been quite a long time. We’ve continuously collaborated on projects for 15 years or so.

When was the most recent project completed?

I wouldn’t say we ever really complete a project, per se. We complete certain development phases, but their involvement is ongoing. We rely on them heavily as an extensive of our development capabilities.

In terms of results, could you share any statistics, metrics, or user feedback that would demonstrate the quality of their performance?

We’re either running private businesses, or acting as a solutions provider for commercial companies and, in both cases, we’re unable to disclose exact sort of results. I can tell you that we find the work and the relationship of clearly higher quality and consistency than other providers in the marketplace. So, that would explain why that relationship has gone on for nearly 15 years. Feedback from these various end-users and stakeholders has always remained positive, which is very impressive when you consider all the projects that they’ve been involved with.

When working with Intetics, is there anything you’d consider unique about their strategic approach or development methodology that distinguish them from other vendors?

They seem to have a much lower turnover than other IT groups, which probably means that they’re considered a better employer, and the folks that work there are more satisfied, as opposed to other entities. There are people that I’ve known for the entire span of those 15 years that have been working there. I’d say that also makes them easier to work with because you aren’t always getting new developers and leads on your project that have little or no background experience with your challenges.

In retrospect, are there areas in which you think they could improve as a service provider?

Sometimes, the communication from the project manager is inconsistent, based on the individual. If there were some guidelines as to how the project managers communicated status and what have you, that might be beneficial. But, like I said, it really depends on the individual because we’ve had great project managers in the past, and then less than desirable ones, too. That’s the only real recommendation I could make, based on my experience.
