I was the head of Telco Solutions IMS at Siemens, a European IT company.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Ingemark?

We started building a smart TV solution in 2012. We had to deliver the first version on site to our client in Saudi Arabia. We needed to scale our over-the-top media services (OTT) team to 60 people to deliver the product. We hired Ingemark to provide staff augmentation for this project. We wanted a mix of experienced and novice resources.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Ingemark provided solution architects, developers, and dedicated integration resources. We built a Linux platform and worked in Java. Their team also assisted with Android and iOS development. System integrations focused on connectivity, troubleshooting, and firewalls. Deliverables included mobile phones and smart television sets.

What is the team composition?

We worked with 20–25 resources. The team included senior lead developers and a dedicated iOS resource that led mobile development.

How did you come to work with Ingemark?

I met the director of Ingemark during university. I knew that he only hired the most skilled people.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent $1.5 million per year.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in February 2013 and the partnership ended in November 2016.

They were experienced people that I could trust to build the solution and teach my team new skills.

How did Ingemark perform from a project management standpoint?

We had daily in-person meetings and worked every other weekend. During these meetings, we discussed upcoming work, strategy, and potential challenges. The team’s know-how benefited the mostly face-to-face collaboration. We also communicated via email and Skype.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The large team had a range of experience levels. However, they optimized the code and made it highly efficient. Their solution architects and senior developers were particularly helpful.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I can’t think of anything.

Don’t rely on set ideas. Ask them for advice and about their opinions.

I am the CTO at Gencove, a health and life sciences technology company that evolved out of the New York Genome Center and focuses on democratizing access to genome sequencing technologies. Our clients, which include pharmaceutical and bitotech companies, as well as research universities like GSK, Kallyope, Stanford, and Harvard, use our core low-pass sequencing product to ascertain the genetic makeup of populations like clinical trials in a cost-effective manner. In addition to more data at a lower cost than legacy systems, our technology provides the benefits of sequencing-based tech like new variant discovery. 

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire Ingemark?

We hired Ingemark to help us build our customer-facing dashboard.

What were your goals for this project?

The primary goal was to change the way users monitor the progress and status of genomics projects as well as the method in which they receive data. Focusing a modern and extensible user interface, we wanted to change the current industry standard of providing a file transfer protocol server for data download. In addition to solving the core user interaction, the solution needed to have a responsive design and support both user authentication and authorization and profile flows, e.g., name, email, bio, and password.

How did you select this vendor?

Not only was Ingemark highly recommended by colleagues who had worked with them before, but I had also previously collaborated with several of the company’s engineers and managers. 

Can you go into detail about the services they provided and the scope of the project?

After an initial conference call to discuss the project scope, we provided further details via user stories describing interactions with the software and documentation of our representational state transfer (REST) API. Ingemark generated a detailed estimate for time, engineers, and project-related costs, which we approved.  We then moved toward specifying detailed user interactions and implementation. All of the code—written in Angular JS and integrated with our existing REST API—was thoroughly tested and prepared for continuous deployment. 

What was the team composition?

After a project manager established the scope, communication and execution was handed over to a senior engineer and two junior engineers.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

Ingemark’s work has significantly decreased the amount of overhead required for managing genome sequencing projects and delivering data. This is obvious daily based on the reduction in time spent communicating with customers and responding to support tickets. The simplicity of obtaining genomic data at Gencove has become a central reason for our customers to return or recommend new customers.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

The team was very responsive and adhered to all deadlines. They spoke fluent English and we experienced absolutely no language barrier in our communication via Redmine, Skype, and email. 

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Their grasp on technology is impressive. That, along with a great approach to project management, made working with Ingemark a pleasure. 

Are there any areas where they can improve?

No. They run a tight, well-organized shop and this was a great experience.
