I am Muvehida Halilović, Project Manager of Her Way at Alviral. Alviral is a digital marketing agency and content publishing house with dozens of sites and millions of visitors. With herway.net, our mission is to help Millenial women navigate personal relationships and build self-esteem. We have the US, German, French, Danish, Swedish and Finnish version of the website.

For what projects/services did your company hire Human?

We hired Human to do a complete transformation of our website herway.net. We wanted to do a rebranding first, so Human translated our wishes and ideas into a beautiful new online identity that will make the platform more recognizable and will create the best experience for our readers. Also, together we have decided to split the project into two phases. They have made small fixes on the website right away and run AB tests in order to improve the performance of the existing website (and bring fast benefits), while the new website is being built in the next phase.

What were your goals for this project?

Our goals were to make our page more user-friendly, to ensure better user experience, and to create a design that will be noticeable and memorable, the design that will represent what we do.

In the discovery workshop, Human helped us find crucial pain points, guided us to solutions, and, after the scope became clear, split the rebranding and redesign project into phases, so we could get benefits fast. After the workshop, which helped us define the scope of work, we have started the first phase of the redesign project. Human first helped with quick design and performance fixes on the current page. They also ran two A/B tests in Google Optimize in order to find out how our readers consume our content, and to help us get more page views and clicks. In the next phase, that starts soon, Human will implement the new design through the frontend and backend.

The team composition changed depending on the stage of the project. Since the planning phase, there were around 8-9 people involved in the project. Project manager, data analysts, developers, designers and even the CEO.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

We are in the middle of the redesign project, so we can’t talk about the numbers yet. But even the minor tweaks they did on our current website are starting to show results (more page views and clicks).

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

It was a great experience working with them. In the planning phase, it was no problem for them to travel to our city and organize a workshop. They are also very responsive and available whenever we need them, through any channel.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

First and foremost, the redesign they did for our website. They really have an eye for a clean, simple but effective design. It was love at first sight!

Are there any areas for improvement?

The team spirit and how well they took care of the project impressed us. There’s very little that could be improved as they offer optimal service and incredible value. They truly care about the project. They’re also wonderful people to work with. I couldn’t ask for anything more.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

The project is still ongoing and the focus is on testing and optimisation of the application. The project was launched recently so we are still gathering the data.

During the years of working together, we have built quality relationship between our two companies. We had one point of contact, the project was delivered on time and we are very much satisfied with the guidance of the project.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

The most impressive is how they are not focused only on the project specification, but they always encourage new discussions, are very transparent and always have our goals on their mind.

Are there any areas for improvement?

There is always room for improvement. But Human is well-aware of that, so at the end of every project, they always do a retrospective to gain feedback for improvement.

Our goal was to engage our end-users. By adding a visual and storytelling layer to our genome sequencing service we wanted to showcase the complex nature of our business in a more user-friendly and interactive manner.

They were involved in planning and giving a creative concept based on our available data sets. We've provided them with the data and some desired outcomes and they gave us a visual and storytelling narrative for our end users.

After defining the concept and the UI design, Human developed a front-end web application based on our defined technology stack which we then connected to our API.

The team changed depending on our engagement but we generally worked with a project manager, a designer and a frontend developer building our front-facing app.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

55% of users have opted into the newly created experience, 10% of all users have made at least one friend and 29% of participants have discovered one first-degree relative. More qualitatively, the visualizations are loved by users and are still in production today.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

Human was very well organized, responsive, and detail oriented. Every step was transparent, with a clear path to the final solution.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Their ability to grasp a completely new technology (applications of genome sequencing technology) and transform that understanding into a great visual product in a timely fashion.

Are there any areas for improvement?

There is very little to improve. Honestly, it was a very positive experience.

I'm a CEO of tech company specializing in providing services and development in marketing tech, analytics and big data industry. We had previous contact with Human through our clients and knew how they work and what were the results. As we wanted no compromise solution done on time, there was no doubt that we want to try these guys out. We didn't look for other vendors. We wanted to (finally) work with them!

Once we got in touch with vendor, we wrote down the specification, provided written guidelines and then let them to lead us through their process. Within first few weeks we received mockups that were almost from the start the stuff we wanted. In the next few weeks we worked with them on refining those mockups, providing additional information and content we missed to write down initially. When project was almost done, vendor provided us with all the materials that they worked on and we continued with implementation of CMS.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Project was done in Q1 2017 and still looks fresh and represents what we do. We even decided to redesign another website with the same vendor based on this experience.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Quite effective -- easy to communicate, they use basically the same tools as we do so we didn't have any problem along the way. Work was done on time and we always felt they think about each step of the process and that there is someone to lead us and suggest changes and improvements if needed.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Higly experienced team, their work really looks crisp and on the spot, they always find a way to make stuff that will stand out. Based on our previous experience, we would say that the most important thing was - delivery on time.

Are there any areas for improvement?

Can't think of anything crucial, we were quite happy with our cooperation and will use their services again.

I am the head of the digital marketing unit for an international banking institution.

What challenge were you trying to address with Human?

One of our sub-brands is a credit card company with 350,000 clients. In 2018, we introduced the first digital onboarding process that lets the user access their card via a webpage and mobile app and have it shipped to their home address. It takes the place of an in-person branch visit.

We needed Human to develop a state-of-the-art website that would attract clients and serve as a landing point for all our increased advertising.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

From the beginning, Human was involved in designing the brand values and voice that we wanted to portray. Together we defined the business goals of this website. We then started working on the main prototype of the site’s information architecture, structure, and so on. After signing off on that part, they began work on the design, mock-ups, and main style guide of the whole website. 

Following that, Human built it from the ground up using the latest technology. They created a completely frontend-rendered website that doesn’t use the backend that much. At the last stage, they developed a CMS that enables us to edit the content much more easily. We previously relied on deployment if we made any major changes.

What is the team composition?

There are about six people from their side depending on the phase of the project we’re in. Since the beginning, we’ve had a project manager, some copywriters, designers, and frontend developers. In the end, we’ve worked with backend developers and system integrators from their side.

How did you come to work with Human?

They are the leaders in the Croatian market and have been known here for the last few decades now. It wasn’t much of a hassle to find out about them. They’ve also won multiple awards at a marketing festival.

How much have you invested in them?

We’ve spent close to $100,000.

We began working with them in June 2018, and the work is still ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Multiple times in 2019, we increased our online budget. We saw that the conversion rate was higher compared to the previous site. If we had the same amount of people come to the website as before, we had more conversions and a greater budget, and you can really feel the difference with that increased conversion rate.

How did Human perform from a project management standpoint?

They are quite professional and stick to the timeline we agreed upon. They are strict in terms of the scope; usually, when we agree on something, that is what they deliver at the end. 

In terms of collaboration tools, they are quite open, and communication has been easy. When we work on major projects, they use Asana, and we also have our internal Slack channel. In the setup that we have, we mostly define the scope and they do the majority of the work. There’s no need for stand-ups or more intense collaboration on a daily basis.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their ability to understand the client and their perspective and act accordingly has been impressive. Human makes a great effort to really know our issues and what we want to achieve with the site. They’ve delivered what we need at the end.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They could be a bit more flexible about the scope and let some things fly without needing a new round of procurement.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Go ahead and work with them.

What challenge were you trying to address with Human?

We had an outdated website and we were completely blind as to how to convey to our clients our business offerings. So, it was very difficult for the company to teach us how to be better in communicating our services to the public. We hired Human to help us with a new way of thinking, which is a very difficult thing to do. Their main task was to extract what we were trying to communicate with our website and how to actually make it work.

What was the scope of their involvement?

They updated our entire website. We had an initial conversation with the CEO and the project manager that was assigned to us. They talked us through the process of a new way of thinking for us, which proved to be difficult. In a workshop they assessed what we were trying to sell and how we could do it better. Next, we provided them with content, which they were able to incorporate into our new website.

I can confidently say 4-5 years later our website is still up to date and great to read.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Without the new website, I don't know where'd we be right now. It was a major game changer for us, from the approach to the website itself, to how we think about it.

How did Human perform from a project management standpoint?

They were quite responsive, and maybe it's because we have a good relationship together outside of business. I wouldn't say they gave us special treatment or anything like that, but they even inspired me to live up to their standard and be a good client as well, and do my part of the work. For the first time, after many failed websites, we had an effective team.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They were very down to earth and easy to communicate with. They didn't make us feel bad at any point, which I appreciate the most, because no one should make you feel incompetent. They were careful to put things in our terms. We were one of their smaller projects, so it was nice to see that they were even willing to take us on board in the first place.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Maybe we could talk about an upgrade for our site going forward. It was never part of our original deal, but it would be nice to see that followup. Overall, we're happy.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

My advice is to come with your best ideas and content, but also with an open heart. They can get the best out of your ideas, but you just need to be open to it. If you're hiring someone at that level of expertise, you should really listen to them.

I’m the CEO of a company focused on providing operational support systems for telecommunications enterprises, which encompasses everything from metric and data center monitoring and management to customer care.

We collect performance data and other metrics, and then process them and provide software to help engineers visualize that information and solve problems more easily.

What challenge were you trying to address with Human?

We were struggling a lot with how to present ourselves to our potential customer base to communicate what we do and how we do it. We turned to Human to help us actually design and bring that messaging to the market.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Human provided us with a brand-new WordPress website, on which they built everything from content and layout to the technical and graphical aspects of the UX/UI. Their team also worked to improve our SEO — both by improving the site’s infrastructure and increasing keyword targeting — and define the logo for our flagship product.

We worked with about eight people from their team, all of whom played different roles in helping to shape the way we presented ourselves to the web.

How did you come to work with Human?

They were originally recommended to us by an acquaintance who vouched for the quality of their work. We decided to go to them both because of their price point and the fact that they are within walking distance from our office, which made collaborating much easier.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The project was definitely one of the best investments I’ve ever made. At the time, we were collecting a lot of data from Google Analytics, and we measured the increase in visits after we launched the improved site. Within three days, we had an almost 400% jump in traffic from the United States and India and 200% in the UK and Russia. They did a really good job of increasing our visibility.

Even more importantly, in the time following the website launch, we had more than a dozen contacts from different partners interested in becoming a part of our network and saw an increase in the number of leads we received on a daily basis. That number is really important for us because we work on a worldwide scale but operate in such a narrow niche, so every deal that we close is a big deal.

How did Human perform from a project management standpoint?

They started off by doing a really deep dive into our company. Over the course of 3–4 all-day workshops, they asked us all different kinds of questions that forced us to really think about our company in a different way.

They had a project manager who scheduled everything and communicated with us. We had a project manager from our side as well, and the two of them worked quite closely. They would provide us with weekly reports on where we stood and what we had to do, so from a project management perspective, I think they did an even better job than we did in staying on track.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their commitment to understanding our business processes and goals before we started was very impressive. That initial process helped us to really crystalize the idea we had for the project and allowed us down the road to create much better written and graphic content for the site.

Are there any areas they could improve?

The SEO for the project was very difficult because of how niche the targets of our company are, but that isn’t something I would blame them for.

When they started asking questions, I was afraid because I didn’t have the answers, but that was what actually pushed me to think more deeply about those things. I would suggest that you don’t get scared by them when you first start; instead, really embrace the difficulty of that process.

The project ran smoothly, and the project was delivered according to the initial timeline. Any potential delays or changes in scope that we requested were correlated with the potential timeline immediately. Their team was transparent—at all times we knew what to expect. There were absolutely no complaints on the project management side. Project management was a big plus.

Their project management enabled the proper execution of the whole project. We had our website made three times and hadn’t been satisfied with the solutions up until this one. Human's distinguishing factor was that someone was always available. We could exchange information at any time and got feedback immediately.
