I work in marketing and operations for a fine jewelry manufacturer, which operates a retail store and an e-commerce website.
OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE
What challenge were you trying to address with Commutatus?
We have an in-house design team that works based on client requirements. We weren’t able to organize all the designs we’d made for clients or track requests. We needed a custom software that would help us upload and tag all of our designs.
SOLUTION
What was the scope of their involvement?
Commutatus designed several internal and external solutions. First, their team created a content storage and management platform based in Ruby on Rails, which allows us to organize our designs. To track our requests, their team followed up with a client management system. They also built an online tool to handle our inventory and invoices from both the store and the online warehouses. Both on our own stores and on marketplaces like Amazon, we’re now able to track all inventories and sales in real-time. From there, Commutatus also developed a POS system for the stores, which helps our sales team locate product details for clients.
Their team is currently developing a Magento e-commerce website. Unlike our present version, they’ll integrate the platform with a custom backend to sync our retail and online inventories in real-time.
What is the team composition?
We’ve worked with a team of six developers and designers as well as a project manager who’s my main point of contact, but I’ve also been in direct contact with senior team members.
How did you come to work with Commutatus?
I’d met Michael (CEO, Commutatus) while working at the same organization. He relocated to Chennai—where I’m located—and reached out to discuss his startup, Commutatus. We had good synergy and started working together.
How much have you invested with them?
So far, we’ve spent about $100,000 with them.
What is the status of this engagement?
We started working with Commutatus in February 2016, and the collaboration is ongoing.

How did Commutatus perform from a project management standpoint?
Their team has been excellent over the last four years. We’ve used Slack to communicate with two dedicated channels. Their team has always been responsive both during and after business hours for urgent issues.
Commutatus has been dedicated to the projects. They’ve made an effort to understand our specific challenges. The project manager dives deep into requirements and relays them to their team, making communication easy. All my experience with them has been fantastic.
What did you find most impressive about them?
Everyone I’ve interacted with from their team has been young, which has been advantageous when trying to understand market dynamics. They’re up-to-date on technologies and it’s easy to connect with them. Commutatus is open to new ideas and tackling new challenges. I’ve never heard ‘no’ from them.
Are there any areas they could improve?
Estimating project timelines could be improved. Commutatus has more or less delivered on timelines, but there’ve been a few delays, which is understandable when working with tech. Otherwise, I have no complaints.
Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?
Set up clear expectations; be particular about the features and sprints to be achieved. Commutatus will do their best if they’re given a clear notion of the project.
