Agralogics offers SaaS-based applications and services that provide geo-referenced big data analytics for the hospitality industry. I worked as the only Product lead, to manage commercial expectations and drive Product development with engineering.

What were your goals for this project?

Having built a desktop application enabling growers and producers to manage their farms we needed a mobile app that tied things together between the farms (farm-hands, workers) and the back-office (managers, supervisors).

Describe the project in detail.

Some of the challenges and prerequisites were: A simple and clear UI for growers and farm-hands. Server-side and desktop application were already mature products. How should the existing design accommodate the mobile product and subsequent design changes? As a startup, some of the mobile work was off-shored, how to bring back some of the work in-house while managing the offshore team. The core server team was based in China, hence managing the product meant synchronizing multiple offshore teams.

The mobile application would be used in fields/farms with poor data coverage - how to make data, activities, and location (map) of those activities available in poor to no coverage situations (offline-mode). Keeping data synced between desktop and mobile applications, and push-notifications was of critical importance.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The app was launched on time meeting all product requirements for a seed round of funding, and we were able to raise a good round on the back of our mobile app.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

It was very effective. We also had a remote team at two locations and they were able to manage all teams seamlessly.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

They met all user requirements very well and put in a lot of thought designing and implementing the app. During the design phase actively consulted with agricultural domain experts (myself and others) to ensure that the product used correct nomenclature, units, and other ag standards.

Are there any areas for improvement?

We were very satisfied with the effort.

I only communicated with the lead developer.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

My company is still in the beginning stages, but this project has helped tremendously with insight on how to properly run this type of business and how improvements can be made.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

We arranged the project through email and phone calls. It was effective. We did use some management tools like spreadsheets and timelines.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

What I found most impressive were their professionalism and knowledge. Their team seemed to have an answer for everything. Whenever we hit an obstacle, they had a solution. They also knew how to improve things. 

Are there any areas where they could improve?

So far, I don't see any areas where they could improve. They're great at everything.
