We hired WizzDev to modernize and migrate our backend infrastructure from AWS OpsWorks to AWS Systems Manager. The engagement started with an in-depth audit of our AWS environment to identify outdated components and architectural improvements. As part of the preparatory phase, WizzDev upgraded the underlying OS (Ubuntu) and key software packages, including PHP and Apache, ensuring compatibility with newer AWS services.

The actual migration was carried out under tight time constraints, as our infrastructure supports mission-critical backend services for both mobile and web apps used daily by PressPad’s global customer base. Despite this, the transition was completed seamlessly with no downtime or service degradation.

WizzDev managed the entire project from planning to execution, including environment reconfiguration, Systems Manager setup, and deployment automation. They provided detailed documentation covering the new infrastructure setup, deployment instructions, and maintenance procedures.

The migration was completed on time and with zero downtime, which was critical since our backend supports live traffic from mobile and web apps used by PressPad clients. Additionally, the upgrade reduced our reliance on deprecated AWS services and positioned us for easier scaling and future maintenance.

Most importantly, the new setup enabled us to publish new mobile apps, onboard new customers, and deliver customized implementations of our solutions to meet specific client needs.

Project management was very good — all deliverables were completed on time, and WizzDev was very responsive throughout. Communication between their engineers and our developers was smooth and effective, making collaboration feel seamless. When we needed to accelerate certain stages, they reacted quickly and adjusted without asking too many questions and without compromising quality.

What impressed us the most was that we were looking for an external company capable of executing this project across Poland, Japan, and the UK. Only WizzDev was willing to take on the challenge and successfully deliver the project within the time frame and budget we had to offer.

Honestly, there’s really nothing to complain about. The entire process was handled professionally, and we’re very satisfied with the outcome. The rules and expectations were very transparent from the very beginning, which made the whole collaboration smooth and hassle-free.

They had a great proposition, to work with us first and convert vague requirements that we had intonthe actionable steps. Did that in a form that suited us, helped to define a plan on how to achieve results. They were very attentive, kept me always up to date about each bit of progress, always open about upsides and downsides.

Initial planning could've been better, but it stems from the a lot of unknowns that we had along the way, due to the unique circumstances of the project requirements. We were after a very small product footprint, ans it had its own challenges that manifested along the way - but all of them where fixed.

WizzDev has help accelerate the development and launch of the product at least a factor of 5. In addition, working with WizzDev, the team is able to continuously develop and push new features to the software services at a predictable cadence. This has demonstrated the quality of their work and their commitment to support their client business.

Great communication and very good response. WizzDev technical team is able to ramp up quickly and quickly become an integrated/productive member of the overall team. The team is responsible to our need and closely aligned to our development needs and architectural, and at the same time, able to share their insights and experience to propose new technical solutions. This has enable the overall team to work effectively and efficiently as one integrated unit.

After sharing a high-level brief and a initial discussion, they shared a high-level proposal. It was thorough, positively challenged my assumptions and proposed milestones and costs.Hardware choices were agreed at a follow-up meeting as well as milestones and costs. I then met with wider team to asnwer specific and detailed questions.

The work started quickly and I was provided access to a Software repository and JIRA to follow progress and contribute where necessary. We agreed to move regular communications from email to Slack to facilitate more immediate feedback. 

Work was completed in a timely manner and in nearly all cases I was the bottleneck, not them. Project manager and senior leadership regularly checked in on progress and made sure everything was moving in the right direction

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

I was working with a senor that was relatively new and unknown technology, and came with quite a lot of limitations. So I was looking for a partner with a great experience in terms of sensor and MCU integration and firmware. I was impressed with their bdy of work, and they could point me to projects that were very relevant. 

Their questions showed not only great insight but a real underetanding of the domain. They were also not put off by starting small to align with my budegetary constraints. As a founder of a small company I have limited understanting of many areas of hardware, firmware and software development and they have been extremely patient and supportive in getting a test platform up and running and enabling to sucessfully test the application.

The developer I was working directly with was extremely creative and went above and beyond to reach a satisfactory conclusion. I could also see the benefit of the active support of a range of knowledable colleagues and even the senior management team.

I'm struggling to think of any way in which this project could have been executed any better.

We hired this team to develop a PCB that controls a light and receives sensor data. The PCB is used by a mobile application to provide a premium product experience.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

We searched UpWork for IoT developers and shortlisted 3. We selected this company based on very strong technical competence and involvement of developers from the very beginning of the process.

They created the software for a PCB that communicates with a mobile app. The PCB collects data through its light and humidity sensors and lets the user engage with their plants through a mobile app.

How many resources from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?

A project manager who was the main point of contact. There were also 2 IoT developers. Occasionally experts on the AWS IoT service and BCP design would involved to make technical clarifications.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The project has not yet been completed due to supply chain issues with the required components. The mobile app as been published to the App Store and Google Play. We'll continue working on integration the PCB when obtaining the missing components.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

We would have weekly video calls with the manager and developers that usually included a demo of the developed functionality. Beside that we communicated via chat and email.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

I found the developers really engaging when discussing technical details and the solution as a whole. The involvement of their CEOs reassured us that the project was on the right track as they could share experiences from similar projects.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

In our weekly meetings it could have been communicated more clearly which milestone were currently being worked on what the reming time to completion was.

We asked WizzDev to re-implement an existing Firmware for the Power Plugs that was created during a PoC phase.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

WizzDev applied for our job posting on upwork. After interviewing with a few other applicants as well, it was the thoughtful preparation of an initial project plan with the flexibility to revise it after each iteration, which led me to choose WizzDev as a partner to implement the Firmware.

Describe the project in detail and walk through the stages of the project.

The firmware is running on an ESP8266 that needs to communicate with another microcontroller on the same PCB using a proprietary protocol, which was the first milestone in the project. The communication with our REST API was added afterwards and finally some web services to control the Power Plug directly were provided. In order to support future enhancements an over-the-air  (OTA) update mechanism was added as well.

The main work was done by 2 firmware developers, coordinated by a project manager who also had a strong technical background.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The new Firmware significantly reduced the rate of support issues and the overall stability of the system. The initial release required a bug fix version delivered very fast and does a great job now.

We received a weekly status update along with a plan of the tasks for the upcoming week. Each task has been estimated before starting it and discussed transparently if exceeded.

The firmware developers were directly involved in calls which made it very comfortable to discuss technical issues.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

At first, we haven't had access to their project management platform and code repository, making it more difficult to keep track of all tasks. However, this has been addressed and changed in a follow-up project, which was great to see.
