MATSUKO are a leading technology company developing and publishing the worlds first holographic presence apps requiring only a smartphone to see live holographic presence of real people. As Product Manager, my role is to lead the team to deliver the business goals to solve customer needs. The scope of work agreed was delivered as requested, on time and with good quality. When any bugs or polish were identified, or the designs were updated. Weelorum was very responsive, flexible, and professional.

Project management with Weelorum was very convenient. They were added to our project management software, so we could track and see progress on all deliverables. In terms of managing the forecast, we had some gantt chart forecasts and spreadsheets to manage cost of the work and time required. We also had a shared instant messenging tool to communicate instantly. They were responsive to email and any communications, right through the projects.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Weelorum delivered on the work agreed with a high professional standard. They were very responsive in their communication and management of the project. They were flexible and made changes and fixes as requested with a positive attitude and professional approach.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

We are very satisfied with our work projects with Weelorum. We have no areas for improvement. We will continue to hire them as an extension to our development team resources, to further improve the MATSUKO app.

We wanted to develop an iOS comprehensive financial planning mobile application to capture a slice of the millennial population financial services market.

We conducted an extensive search through UpWork for mobile app development agencies with project management, UX/UI design and development capabilities and shortlisted approximately 5. After gathering cost estimates and conducting an interview, we went with Weelorum due to their iOS design/development expertise.

We initially worked with another software development agency to complete an initial UX/UI exercise with a working prototype. When we started working with Weelorum, they immediately took the design and broke it down into a thorough and detailed project development plan.

Within 3 months, we had the initial iOS app completed. They worked collaboratively throughout the process seeking input and incorporating feedback. We have now been working with them for over a year and have recently launched the initial version of our product to the App Store.

We just uploaded app to App Store, so we'll be back to update this section with metrics.

Our main point of contact is easy to work with, always approachable with a positive and professional attitude. Communication is mostly through email and Telegram. We hold our calls on a weekly basis via Zoom/Google Meet. Everything is delivered on time or if there are bugs to fix that take longer than expected, they are good at communicating progress.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

We appreciate their can-do attitude, patience, and approachability. Down to earth and easy to work with. Reliable and professional. Excellent.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Mostly QA. Sometimes I have to spend a ton of time finding bugs and identifying where there are issues, but we are working with some major constraints, since we need to integrate bank accounts through Plaid and these are US based, so they are unable to link them on their end.

The weelorum team analyzed our existing application, provided a new design proposal, and carried out the PM and implementation using technologies such as Swift, Kotlin, and firebase. It is worth mentioning that our app required very fine control of device hardware that required extensive expertise of iOS and Android sdks and libraries.

Within 3 months native apps were released on both platforms. The improved design and experience boosted our user acquisition and specially retention. Three months after we will be releasing a new set of functionality that has had an amazing reception among our beta testers

Weelorum has a relaxed but effective approach with respect to requirement definition. They saved me time by translating my requirements during our weekly meetings and slack communications, into user stories themselves. They use Jira as PM platform and communicate their estimates through google spreadsheets.

The quality of their development is impressive. They always executed the Figma designs with extreme precision.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

In my opinion, they show a slight overconfidence when it comes to estimating the project scope and complexity. Although it is something they can improve, it wasn't so significant to not keep collaborating with them in the future

For an innovative Inventory App, we needed a new UX / UI approach. We identified that in order to achieve our app goals and increase the efficiency of the user, we had to reconsider and break some of the used-to UX user patterns. The innovation and challenge, at the same time, was to break with existing UX patterns, while still balancing with what the ordinary user is used to.

How did you select this vendor?

We searched online for a number of design companies, that also have experience in app development them self. (That is, they should understand not only design but also the required development). Also communication skills and project organizational skills have been important in the selection process.

• Stage 1: We reviewed jointly the existing App and existing requirements.
• Stage 2: Based on this they provided an estimate for all project stages. (And they stayed at the end within their estimates.)
• Stage 3: Iterative Approach. Based on some extensive documentation on the business / app use cases by us, they developed the UX/UI design.
• Stage 4: We had weekly meetings on aligning our and their ideas. They were very open on feedback and criticism but also fought for their ideas (which is both good).
• Stage 5: By using our feedback they updated and aligned the design, which in the end resulted in the final design.

Their (Lead) designer plus some project office member supported us in the work.

We are very satisfied with the UX/UI. We currently implement it. We hope that also our users will be happy with the UX/UI and easy to use for them. But this will only time show.

We are very happy with the communication and work with the Team from Weelorum. It is very easy to talk to them and to think about new ideas. They stayed within their forecasted time estimate.

They are very friendly and skilled people with an interest on the subject and project. As we had an iterative approach and to rely on their expertise, it was important to trust them. They helped us by explaining everything and being patient with our non-conform approach as we had chosen. They were very open to feedback and criticism, but also fought for their ideas (which is both good).

We wanted to develop an app, so we can get new customers and expand our business. We already had UX/UI design, so only development was needed.

We searched for mobile developers on upwork for our budget and found ~10. Contacted all of them and chose Weelorum, because they responded quickly, explained everything perfectly and we believed in their responsibility.

Before the start of the work, they made the calculation of the time and money costs for the project. We created a general chat where we were able to communicate and make decisions quickly. A month later, we received the first beta of the application. Which is quickly enough for us, because there were a lot of redoings.

We cannot tell you about the numbers yet - we are now publishing the application in the Google Play Store.

Communication was very easy, almost like with friends. We had a zoom calls once on Monday, where discussed plans for the week. They showed a screen if necessary. Time costs were sent to email — in the form of a table, where current costs and approximate costs were visible for the entire project.

They made a time estimate and adhered to it perfectly. We liked the clarity.

They had to publish themselves - although they offered their help. But we would like to be led by the handle in this process.

With in the given time frame of our 3 sprints WeeLorum delivered on time and also exceeding expectations on "in project " tweak and change management.

WeeLorum is a new startup and is learning. One area of improvement is getting a solidified scope of work from clients, in order to streamline projects according to scope.

At first we hired Weelorum to create the design for our social media application based on use cases and application specifications that we provided. We are planning on hiring Weelorum for the development of the application.

What were your goals for this project?

Our goals for this project were to create a minimum viable product to onboard users and conduct market research before securing additional funding. Further, we emphasized the importance of a materialistic design and seamless UX.

SOLUTION

How did you select Weelorum?

My team interviewed various independent developers and development teams. We eventually decided on Weelorum as the optimal candidates for the job.

The team has experience creating similar applications, offered a great price and timeline, and engaged with the project. We connected with Weelorum using Upwork and paid them through this platform.

Describe the project in detail.

Once we had created the Upwork contract with Weelorum, the team set up a slack channel where we could could communicate with them as well as regular meetings at least once per week. We were also given access to a JIRA dashboard which let us view the team's progress.

What was the team composition?

Throughout the design process, we spoke with both the CEO and CTO of Weelorum as well as collaborated with a designer on their team. For the development process, we were connected with additional members of their team on Slack.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The design aspect of the project has been completed and we are very satisfied with the product. The design was absolutely what we were looking for, showcasing all required application functionality and exceeding our expectations with respect to aesthetics.

At the end of the project, our company was delivered a comprehensive mockup and clickable prototype of the design.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Weelorum's ability to communicate was beyond satisfactory. Despite the time-zone difference, our comments and concerns were addressed promptly. Throughout the whole process, we felt our input was valued and we felt more like collaborators than clients.

The Weelorum team really understood our vision for the project and recommended additional features for the application, improving the application while still adhering to our original price quote.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Weelorum is very transparent and structured. We were given a realistic timeline and estimate with actionable tasks and a clear path to project completion.

Are there any areas for improvement?

No - the project could not have gone any better! We really enjoyed working with Weelorum and will continue to in the future.

SOLUTION

How much have you invested with them?

From the time of the engagement until now, we have spent over $150,000 with Weelorum, and we don’t even have 80% of our code.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project started in October 2018 and ended in May 2020.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

In June, when we left the original review, the project was just winding down. There wasn’t a final handoff yet, but we wanted to provide Weelorum with the opportunity to go find additional work. We were a bit pressured to give them a really good review, as they’re using it to get work from other clients. The relationship we had with Weelorum before the final completion and deliverables were provided was positive. 

Due to COVID-19, we lost a significant amount of our revenue. We were supposed to make a final payment installment to them, and that was delayed significantly. They ultimately withheld the source code. Not having 80% of the code that we asked for is significant, regardless of the outstanding amount of $20,000 that we had to delay due to COVID-19. We discussed with them that, since we'd lost 90% of our revenue and we needed to recover, we required at least the portion of the product that we’d paid for. Weelorum agreed to give us that, and when they gave us a version of the source code, we knew that there were some limitations — some libraries were missing. That was fine to us, but we didn’t realize to what extent the intellectual property was missing until about three weeks ago, when an Android developer came in and said we had an empty source code. He told us that there was nothing in the codes for Android, while there was less than 50% available for iOS.

In May, Weelorum was supposed to give us a product feature that was going to help us continue our engagement with that customer. From a project management standpoint, they missed the release by three weeks, which caused us to lose this customer. We weren’t able to deliver on what we had promised, which was also what Weelorum claimed to be able to complete. That was a significant outcome for us and led us to backtrack a bit to better figure out our product and how we’d deliver it to our customers.

How did Weelorum perform from a project management standpoint?

During the time of our engagement, Weelorum agreed to a contract that stated that they would be providing milestone updates and hour breakdowns. Also, for every iteration, they were supposed to be uploading the source code into our server, providing the intellectual property that we’d been paying for. However, that was put aside during the engagement because there was a lack of project management on both sides, as we were going so fast.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I would have to say that our relationship with Weelorum was really good. Initially, I was satisfied, even with the delay in the project and the missed deliverables — they’re good guys. At the end of the day, they’re good people, and I was satisfied with the good quality of the work. However, I think where the engagement lacks is in the ethical piece. Also, the inability to deliver on time is really alarming.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I think there were mistakes made on both sides. We really trusted the relationship that we had with Weelorum. In our contractual agreement with them, it states that every single release and intellectual property belongs to Spontivly. 

In total, we have less than 50% of the product accessible that we paid for. To me, that’s a huge red flag — although we do owe them a final invoice of $20,000, we’ve paid over $150,000. From a contractual standpoint, I don’t believe that developers holding you hostage is proper business practice.

Now that we do have the capital, Weelorum has not come forward and admitted the fact that they’ve withheld everything from us. All that they’ve been asking is whether they can get a payment schedule from us. To me, that’s really concerning. How many other customers are going to feel that? Other customers need to know that if they engage Weelorum, they need to have proper procedures and strict project management guidelines put in place. If Weelorum misses on deliverables that the client expects, they need to have strict controls in place for that.
