We started working with TurnKey in 2019 so have a long history of collaboration. They initially staffed our first core team of developers offshore for us, and then we expanded the team over time since we continued to grow and we were happy that TurnKey hired really great developers for us. We like that the developers work for us so we aren't beholden to an agency in terms of getting stuff done.

Our main need was to hire top-performing developers offshore who could really help us speed up our product development velocity. So we chose TurnKey because they came highly referred, and we liked that their model allowed the developers to work directly with us. We didn't want "outsourcing"(etc.) 

TurnKey's recruiters quickly showed us a range of great candidates for our initial team, and we have seen really low churn rates over the past 5 years of working with TurnKey. This is super important because it's hard to be really productive if your team keeps turning over. Based on their demonstrated track record of getting us great developers that stay with us for a long time, we have continued to use TurnKey as we expand our engineering team.

I like that TurnKey assigns a dedicated recruiting team to us because they really get to know what we are looking for in terms of culture and technical requirements (etc.), and we don't have to start over every time we want to staff a new position. TurnKey makes it easy. 

And then they also have a dedicated HR team that takes care of all the HR work that we don't want to deal with either. TurnKey is very responsive every time we have a question or need something. Great customer service.

We looked at a lot of vendors to help us hire offshore developers, and we liked TurnKey's model the best because all the developers are integrated into our team. Most offshore vendors will tell you that the developers work 100% for you but they don't really. It was super important to us that we were in control of the developers. 

We also really like TurnKey's pricing structure too because they put you in charge of the developer's salaries and raises. Other firms we looked at would keep the actual developer salaries behind a curtain. It's tough to plan and budget when you do that.

We’ve been really happy with their performance, so nothing immediately comes to mind. They have gotten us great talent in a short timeframe so at the end of the day that's all that really matters.

Given our strong growth as well as customer demand, we needed to build out a new SaaS-based product that would be complementary to our core platform. This new product would also enable us to streamline some internal processes too. But our existing engineering resources didn’t have the bandwidth to build out a new product while also continuing development work on our core platform. So we hired TurnKey to create a development team for us that would build and maintain this new SaaS product line.

• The only outcome that really matters to us is whether or not we were able to release our new software product on time and with high quality. And for this, the answer was a resounding yes, plus our developers are now busy iterating and maintaining this new product line moving forward. Thus, we have had a very positive outcome.

TurnKey has it set up so that it feels like their recruiting and HR staff are almost an extension of your internal team. It has all been very seamless and collaborative, which quite frankly I was a bit surprised about having worked with other offshore vendors before (where my experience was the opposite). Their responsiveness has been top-notch — whenever we have a question or problem, they get back to us right away. This is important when you need to move fast like we do.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

I think the fact that TurnKey is well versed in the startup ecosystem and really understands how our needs when it comes to offshore dev may be different than the needs of a huge public company. I don’t have to explain as much to them as I have had to do with other offshore vendors—they seem to get it on the first take. But at the end of the day, all we really care about is quality, and TurnKey has delivered the goods on this front better than other firms I’ve worked with in the past.

Are there any areas for improvement or something TurnKey Labs could have done differently?

Overall, we don’t really have any complaints. The only hiccup I can think of is that we didn’t know the exact national holidays for the country where our dev team is based so perhaps they could do a better job of outlining this for customers upfront (they subsequently provided us with this information once we asked).

We were looking to build out a full stack development team of top talent who would be dedicated to us as full time staff. And we needed everyone to join our team as quickly as possible given our company's growth and product needs.

We did a search for an offshore firm that we could partner with. We didn't want to use an outsourcer since we wanted a full time team that we could control. TurnKey helped us build a full stack product dev team and a customer support team. They’ve helped recruit a product manager, a UI/UX designer, a Dev Ops engineer, a tech lead, two back end engineers, two front end engineers, and two QA engineers. There are three customer support specialists on our customer support team. And while we were building out our development team, TurnKey provided us with a fractional CTO to help us while we were getting started.

Our work with TurnKey started off with their recruitment service. They filled most of our positions within thirty days and did all the technical screening for us so we could focus more on the culture fit of the candidates. Once the employees were hired in Eastern Europe, they took care of all the legal and payroll setup acting as an employer of record. Then they would check in with our candidates on a regular basis and let us know if anyone was at risk of leaving or burnout. Their HR team is now helping us with conducting 360 reviews.

Can you share any outcomes from the engagement that demonstrate progress or success?

It’s been nearly two years of us working together and we have not had the need to replace a single developer. The programmers have all performed very well and TurnKey has been able to give us information that has helped to retain our key players.

TurnKey has a lot of expertise around building remote teams. When they provide advice on how to best structure the teams, they are coming at it from years of experience. So our workflow between the local team and remote team has been pretty seamless since they've given us best practices for us to build around. There are a lot of HR services that you can ask for help with that are included in their fees.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

TurnKey’s founders were entrepreneurs who’ve built, scaled, and sold technology startups before. They really get our needs because they’ve been where we are at and have done what we have to do. That permeates to all of the folks we’ve worked with at TurnKey. They are very quick to respond and get how important it is to move fast and do it with the highest quality possible.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

If they could retain 100% of everyone that would be awesome. They do a great job now. Despite their best efforts we did lose our head of support over the summer. Any incremental improvement in retention would be amazing though they are really strong in this department now.

We needed to rapidly build out our engineering team with highly skilled software developers knowledgeable in C#/ASP.NET Core and TypeScript/React. We wanted more than an outsourcing company, we wanted developers interested in helping us build an industry-changing product.

We used a couple of USA-based contractors, but the work was consistently sub-par. An advisor recommended TurnKey Labs, and we chose them due to competitive pricing and their impressive interview/vetting process.

We were looking for software engineers to augment our existing team. It was important that the candidates' skills were of high caliber, and it was important that the candidates fit culturally with the existing team members. Not only has TurnKey Labs helped with the recruitment process, they've also provided ongoing People Ops support to ensure our team members are engaged and happy with their position.

The TurnKey Labs recruitment team interviews for both technical and soft skills prior to recommending them for our review. Once submitted, our team reviews the candidates' profile and decides to proceed. We hold two short interviews, one focused on technical fit with our product direction and one focused on cultural fit with our company & team. We aim to have a very open, team-driven selection process. At times, this has led to longer recruitment timelines. The TurnKey Labs team stuck through it, and helped us find the perfect team members. The strength of our team's interpersonal relationships is apparent and very much attributable to TurnKey Labs' persistence in helping us find the best team members.

We've hired 5 full-time software engineers through TurnKey Labs. To date, not a single engineer has left our contract/arrangement. While we didn't stop sourcing candidates elsewhere, TurnKey Labs represented a significant boost to our recruitment efforts and helped fill out team roster faster than if we had tried to go it alone. We worked with several USA-based recruitment firms, and none matched the speed and quality of candidates referred by TurnKey Labs.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Initially, as we built up our remote team, the software engineers agreed to flex their time to match a USA-based schedule. However, as we scaled, the EU-based team was able to scale out into their own daily & weekly ceremonies. With a dedicated project manager, our EU-based team carries on full product development duties in parallel to the USA-based team. We use Slack & Notion to coordinate asynchronous communications and product statuses. We hold weekly engineering demos, and the sessions are recorded and made available to the entire company via our share drive.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Their willingness to reach for the perfect candidate. Our requirements are strict, and they did not compromise.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

It did take us a little while to get in-sync on technical expectations for the various job titles/levels. However, after early meetings with the recruitment and interview teams, we were able to see a marked improvement in the quality of referred candidates.

We conducted '3 month dating periods' with every candidate to evaluate their skills and how good of a fit they are with the broader company/teams.

With TurnKey's support, we were able to build our MVP and begin to get initial product-market-fit traction in <1 year. We have 5x'd our overall user activity and product scorecard metrics & milestones/goals over the last ~6 months.

Despite remote nature of the entire Product team, specifically Development - each candidate has taken ownership of their team/responsibilities. They adapted quickly to our bi-weekly sprints as well as optional daily standups. Everything is tracked through Jira, with product planning done in ProductBoard.

TurnKey provided high-quality talent at a cost-effective price. I also appreciated that they were proactive in suggesting certain criteria and requirements when first starting our search for key Lead team members.

Sometimes we have connection/communication issues with the war in UA, but TurnKey has been proactive in doing their best to resolve these pain points.

We conducted a thorough analysis of vendors that we thought could be a potential fit for us and chose TurnKey. Cost of course was important to us, but the deciding factors were TurnKey's ability to source A-level tech talent for us and their ability to help us retain developers once hired. TurnKey seemed to be better/different as it relates to these key factors than what we saw from competitors.

We started with two dedicated teams and have since expanded to over 40 full time staff across UI/UX design, security, front end, backend, DevOps/infrastructure, integration and tech support. All of our offshore folks work very closely with our U.S.-based team members on a daily basis and we have one integrated culture. Our offshore dev team has become a true extension of our internal/onshore team.

We met with the recruiting team at TurnKey to outline our key needs in detail and discuss what we care about most from a qualitative (culture fit) and quantitative (skillset) perspective. We liked that the TurnKey recruiters asked the right questions and seemed to really understand what we were looking for (which was not the case when we used previous firms). They then presented us multiple candidates for each role and we were allowed to participate in the final interviews to ensure we got the best fit for us. I would describe the recruiting process as very custom in nature.

Can you share any outcomes from the engagement that demonstrate progress or success?

We have significantly boosted our productivity and we currently release 51 times per year (weekly cadence). We also have been able to keep the churn rate of our dev talent to under 5%, which has been really helpful in maintaining continuity across our teams as well as maintaining/amplifying our culture. We have continued to grow our development team with TurnKey Labs, which is a sign that things are working as promised.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

TurnKey’s model allows us to easily integrate developers directly into our organization so that they are truly our team. I honestly forget most of the time that they aren’t working in the same building as me. We have one unified culture that spans my onshore and offshore teams so everyone feels like they are in the same boat rowing together.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

We were most impressed with the level of candidates they provided (quality and work ethic) as well as the time frame in which they provided them. TurnKey is able to get us great candidates hired in about 4 weeks (assuming we approve them). I also think their focus on talent management/retention is really unique since I don't see a lot of other firms doing that even though it's super important.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

We haven't experienced any particular areas in which we are unhappy. Most of the time my answer is usually responsiveness of the account managers (etc.) but even here TurnKey performs pretty well. They usually get back to me the same day or less, and I like that the account staff is based in the U.S. so that they are easy to get a hold of if we need it.

We used Turnkey to build out the internal software development team to take over all development, monitoring and maintenance activities for our software development program. Turnkey has helped us hire 5 total software developers to date.

How did you select this agency and what were the deciding factors?

I was referred to their CEO through one of my investors who knows the founding team personally and had great tings about their ability to quickly stand up a talented software team at lower cost than building a US based team.

We have hired 5 total developers from tech lead, to full stack, dev ops and firmware. For each hire, a strong pipeline of candidates were provided, and the Turnkey team performed a good amount of pre-screening such that those that entered the funnel were strong and relevant. They also helped with setting salary comp, and closing. Finally they continue to provide HR services as well as legal admin services associated with employment of a geographically diverse group of developers.

We send Turnkey a job description. For our first hire (Tech Lead) turnkey was also very helpful in editing our JD and providing some strategic guidance on what to include in the JD, and where to search geographically. Once a JD is finalized, turnkey will engage in a developing a funnel, and will complete an initial screen then a in depth technical interview.

They provide scoring from the interviews and make suggestions for some candidates to have a first interview with our team. We then take over and run our own interview process. If we decide to move forward with an offer, we communicate that to turnkey, who provides guidance and executes on the offer and helps with closing. They also provide services such as coordinating equipment ordering and shipping (I.e. laptop) and other onboarding activities.

Each hiring process so far has ended in an effective hire, and almost always within a month from start.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Very effective. Good communication and when something isn't working (funnel not developing) turnkey will provide input about what is slowing us down, and we will make small adjustments to our criteria.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Their combination of speed and quality is very impressive. We don't waste time with pointless intervies.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

The closing process is a little bit different and more hands off then I am used to in US based processes, which at times has made me nervous, but hasn't actually lead to any lost opportunities or offers that were turned down.
