Ambatovy engaged TeraCode to perform a “Data Discovery” exercise.  Data Discovery involves looking at available data from within Ambatovy as well as from exterior sources to find patterns that represent opportunities for performance enhancement, change or improvement.  Senior Data Scientists (with PhD’s in the field of mathematics) analyse data using various algorithms, machine learning techniques as well as the latest generative artificial intelligence to find patterns and explain how they can be used to Ambatovy’s benefit.  This uncovered much much valuable information about the operational efficiency of the business.  A full read-out of the discovery was presented to Ambatovy to help the organisation improve operational procedures.

TeraCode’s Data Discovery process included: 

·      Thoroughly assessing and analysing Ambatovy’s data. 

·      Identifying patterns and correlations between different data sets relevant to the hypotheses posed above.

·      Identifying gaps in the data and helping locate sources for such missing data.

The most significant outcome from this data discovery project was a $20 million reduction in inventory overhead costs over 12-18 months. This was achieved through:

Reversing the current trend where inventory stock levels have increased while service levels (on-time supply) have decreased over the past 10+ years
Completely redefining stock level management and overhauling the existing procurement strategy
Creating an optimized "on-time" supply management process that incorporates: 
Improved methodology for stock ordering
Better lead time management for special orders 
Stock ordering aligned with planned maintenance (predictive maintenance)
Management of adequate reserve supplies to ensure the right items are available at the right place and right time
Implementing reliable, accurate, and auditable KPIs to measure improvements in efficiency and monetary value realized

Provided Halliburton with a proof of concept (PoC) aimed at delivering a pump system monitoring platform. The end-state would be a pump monitoring system that could be offered both as an internal operational enhancement as well as an additional subscription service for customers to use.

For the PoC, the pump monitoring system was developed to give both Halliburton and their customers a real time status of their existing pump systems with performance and location data as well as threshold breach alerting capabilities. The end user was also able to perform “remote control” with Pump “On/Off” functionality.

PoC Deliverables:

·      Collected data from an array of live pumps across multiple field locations and correlated this in the Cloud.

·      Developed a Dashboard in AWS, branded for Halliburton, that can visualise the data coming from the pumps.

·      Created a customisable UI specific to Halliburton’s requirements with:

This demonstrated enormous operational cost savings and value to our customers.

TeraCode has built our customised data science platform to create the roadmap for river clean-up. They are helping us develop multiple data science models to run on this platform. These models will address defined issues and build a total picture of river health now, and into the future.

The deliverables include:

1.    Understanding River Health

Using sensors and purpose-built IoT devices to gather dynamic water data in real-time, incorporating this with external databases on industrial and agricultural sites, along with observational drone and satellite data. 

Questions:

-       What are the specific contaminants in different areas? 

-       What are the sources of contaminants – mapped to waste outlets/industry/factory/farms?

-       How do chemical contaminants effect river health?

-       Which contaminants are most harmful to humans?

-       Which contaminants are accumulating over time?

-       What do chemical signatures look like? 

-       How can chemical signatures assist regulatory compliance? 

-       Which contaminants can be removed?

-       Which contaminants will naturally biodegrade?

-       Which actions (activities/deployed technologies) will generate greatest benefits over time?

This module acts as a dynamic monitoring system. It identifies the correlations between pollutants and the chemical signatures of different industries, even specific factories, sewage outlets and farms. It gives Government the facts needed to set policy and to enforce compliance. 

It goes beyond what has happened, even why it has happened, to answer the crucial issue of what will happen by forecasting the results of interventions over time, predicting future “what if” scenarios to show which clean-up measures will have the greatest impact on river health. Providing the benefit of ‘hindsight’ – beforehand.

This is being used by Government and policy makers to restore Nirmal Dhara (un-polluted flow) of the river.

2.    River Flow

Using historical and realtime data captured by sensors located in the river that measure varying water flow rates, LiDAR, data from drones and satellites. 

Questions addressed: 

-       What are flow rates today vs. historic? 

-       How do flow rates vary in different locations?

-       How do flow rates vary at different times and seasons (during droughts and floods)?

-       What are the causes of changing flow rates (manmade vs. natural)? 

-       What are the impacts of agriculture and industry on flow rates?

-       What are the implications of changing flow rates in different areas, at different times, to populations in these regions? 

-       What is the relationship between varying river flow and pollution? 

-       What intervention measures would help restore natural river flow?

This module forecasts “what-if” scenarios so that decision makers and policy makers can set about restoring the Aviral Dhara (uninterrupted flow) of the river in the most cost effective and efficient ways.

3.    Predicting Floods (and Droughts) in River Basin

Using weather data combined with water balance sheet (see module below) and satellite data to forecast floods and droughts throughout seasonal changes, taking into account changes in population, industry, and agricultural landscape over time.

Questions addressed:

-       If rainfall is above/below XX amount over YY number of days, what are the consequences in different areas?

-       What are the main causes of flooding (beyond excess rainfall)?

-       What is the impact on agriculture in a region if XX amount of rain does (does not) fall in YY time period?

-       What is the impact on river health (pollution levels and flow rates) if XX amount of rain does (does not) fall in YY time period?

-       And how does this vary depending upon the region?

-       What will be the most effective measures to protect people, surrounding land, and(or) cities from the consequences of either excess, or insufficient, rainfall?

This module is used to understand the differences that human activities can make and to decide what interventions need to be taken, when, and where. The objective is to minimize the impact of variable weather events throughout the seasons and in different areas as population, industry and agriculture changes over time.

4.    Understanding River Health and the Impact on Population Health

Using historic health and mortality data to identify risks through correlations between water contamination levels and locations. 

Questions addressed:

-       How extensive are water-related health problems? 

-       How do these problems manifest in different areas?

-       How do health problems relate to specific contaminants?

-       What are the sources of these contaminants?

-       What are the costs of water-related health problems?

This module can be used to predict the population’s medical issues that lead to increased health costs and mortality rates. It will help improve population health by focusing on which changes and interventions will make the greatest differences, so reducing costs to governmental health authorities. 

5.    Which Clean-Up Measures Will Reap Best ROI?

Using data from pilot implementation phases to forecast the impacts and benefits of different technologies for river clean-up. Correlating test result data with complex matrix of data from other modules to predict which clean-up measures would be most effective, when implemented in which locations, and in which combinations, if applied at scale, over time.

Questions addressed:

-       Example: If a sewage treatment plant is built at location A, vs. location B (20 km further downstream) – which one is going to make the biggest difference to water quality, for the greatest number of people, given the amount invested? 

-       How does changing agriculture irrigation methods (using innovative technology to improve crop yield) impact river flow rates over 5-yr period, given changes in rainfall patterns over the same period, when implemented in region A, vs. C or D?

This technology assessment module is used by project decision makers to understand where maximum ROI is going to be gained and what the short, medium, and long-term results of investments will be. They are able to identify the greatest efficiencies, while minimizing exposure to risk. The model forecasts “what-if” scenarios so the most accurate decisions can be made.

6.    Predicting the Water Balance Sheet – Forecasting Supply and Demand

Combining data on natural water supply (surface water, underground water) and man-made supply to create accurate measurements of water supply capacity and on-going demand.

The predictive models help us plan long-term infrastructure projects and make decisions that are backed by data science.

TeraCode continues to support our work and to help train students in data science and data engineering to expand and scale AI-models within the platform.
