I hired Superside a few months ago and was really excited to work with them. I was impressed with their other work and our business. Sadly, I regret ever stumbling across them. I requested a very simple project (make ~20 SVG icons, most of which already existed and needed a few small tweaks) and they quoted me 100 hours, which was my entire month's budget of work. I brought this up to the account admin team, who were nice and professional, and they did a second attempt, which wasn't much different. 
Frustrated, I was able to complete the task myself in about two hours. I decided to cancel my agreement and, since this was the first project they'd ever worked on for me, asked for my money back. They'd delivered no work as of yet so it seemed reasonable.

Absolutely none.

It's taken more than three months to work through this and, to top it all off, when I said I'd be posting honest reviews of what happened, they said:

"We refer to your email dated May 30, 2024, regarding your threat to publish negative reviews about Superside.

While we are always open to constructive feedback and are committed to resolving any legitimate concerns our customers may have, it is against the law to use threats of defamation as a means to an end. We take these matters very seriously and must remind you that defamation, including libel if written, is a serious offense, and Superside will not hesitate to take the appropriate legal action.”

I've never been so surprised to see a company's legal team say they would pursue legal action if I published a negative review. Well, here I am publishing it anyway. You deserve to know what kind of company Superside is, and now you do.

I’m the director of global marketing for a software development company. We create software add-ons for a product.

What challenge were you trying to address with Superside?

We wanted to market our demo videos effectively, but we had a one-person marketing team, so we had many challenges. We sought out agencies and designers, hoping they could help us, but it was hard to maintain brand standards and ensure our priorities were given the proper attention. When the agencies or designers became busy with other projects, ours took the backseat.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We initially hired Superside to help with video editing. We gave them our current demos, and they worked on them. Eventually, we succeeded with our videos and moved on to curating complete campaigns with Superside. Over time, they’ve become an extension of our marketing team.

Our initial video campaigns included ad success stories and short-form video demos. Now, we use Superside for marketing campaigns, concepts, design, email templates, print materials, booth designs, and conference campaigns. 

Our package with Superside comes with a certain number of hours we can use per month. To bank the hours when we have a big event, we discuss the overall campaigns for the entire year and prioritize them. We currently have 15 separate projects going on.

We spend around $30,000 a year.

We began working with them in June 2020, and our relationship is ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Superside has done so well that we’ve noticed substantial growth in our subscriber base and increased views. The customer success stories have really resonated with the audience.

Although we use paid advertising on YouTube, our videos have gotten thousands of views. We now have videos with over 49,000–50,000 views.

Moreover, the quality of their work is excellent. The design and motion graphics are their bread and butter. 

How did Superside perform from a project management standpoint?

We submit all of our projects through Superside’s portal. The platform has everything about the project and stays in the chat. If we haven’t responded, we get notifications via email and the portal. We can set up notifications for every project, every time they write something, or only if they tag us.

In general, we stay current by looking at the portal daily. Additionally, we meet every Monday to ensure we’re on track and see if any project might need to be worked into the marketing plan. Lourdes helps us prioritize the projects.

Superside gives us our files back so we can use them without going back to them each time. They’re very responsive if we need an edit.

Finally, we meet with Abigail (Customer Success Manager) once a month to check in if we need anything and look at how we’re utilizing our hours.

Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?

Lourdes is amazing. If she ever leaves, we’re gone. She keeps us on track and stays on top of everything.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They have a part of their package where they can go out and shoot a video, but the projects aren’t quoted accurately in terms of hours, so we’ve never used it.

What challenge were you trying to address with Superside?

We engaged Superside to manage our branding design project.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They were supposed to create our brand guidelines, illustrations, typography, logo, and color schemes. However, they outsourced the work to a designer who was totally out of touch with our industry. In the end, we didn’t proceed with the second cycle because they should’ve finished our project easily, but they didn’t complete it.

What is the team composition?

We worked with eight people. We only worked with one designer because seven of them were customer service professionals.

How did you come to work with Superside?

I saw Superside on Google, and I chose them because they were a Y Combinator company. They were supposed to be good. Y Combinator is a venture capital firm that invests in early-stage startups.

We spent $9,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked with them from October–December 2021.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Whenever we requested them to change something, we were billed every single time. On top of that, they never really listened to us because our requested changes weren’t changed according to our requirements. In addition, they spent the last month making excuses to prepare us for another billing cycle.

Describe the impact this engagement has had on your business.

We wasted our time with Superside, and now we’re scrambling to find another branding design company. However, we’re already two months late.

How was project management handled?

We had weekly check-ins, but not with the designer, only with a team of handlers. Our conversations with them went nowhere, and they never tried to adjust to our project changes.

Is there anything that the vendor did well or that you would consider a strength?

No, they didn’t really deliver anything properly.

In what specific areas can they improve?

They should improve everything. We were engaged with a top-tier agency before we worked with them and we paid them six figures in our last business. During that time, we didn’t experience any troubles similar to what we had with Superside.

We also had complete access to the people of our previous vendor, including their creative director, product designer, and project manager. This engagement was nothing like that. In fact, it felt like the designs that they handed back to us every week were produced by machines.

What advice do you have for clients with similar needs to yours?

Avoid working with Superside. Instead, go to a real agency even if you have to pay three times more.

Yes, they often deliver on time. Needs were met, but a lot of back-and-forth/edits still occur. We needed them to be more upfront about their design decisions and have a better dialogue versus giving us designs or options without an explanation or feedback.

We just launched the program, but the early KPIs I'm looking for are an increase in engagement (clicks, reactions), page visits to key pages, and conversions (sign up or request a demo).

No, the project was not delivered on time. They were very responsive, but I don't feel like our needs were fully met for this project.
