The project has suffered significant time delays due to poor resource management and quality. There were so many people going in and out of the project. And when things blew up, no significant changes were made in their workflow to improve the situation. The solution offered by Specno was to let their PM and senior developer focus on the project on weekends since they had other projects during the week. Entering beta testing phase + turnover phase.

A working app seems to have been delivered, but this will truly be determined once the beta test has been conducted.

This seemingly working app has arrived only after the project experienced significant delays (about 6 months) due to poor resource management and high employee turnover by the company.

What I'd consider a success, or at least a respectable endeavor, is the effort that both the PM and the senior developer put into the project by working overtime to clean up the mess. Before a senior developer stepped in, the app was basically unusable with countless bugs and crashes.

In what ways can they improve?

Do better with employee turnover. Vet your employees better before assigning them to projects. Ensure better continuity for a team that's actually doing well with a project. Be more transparent with your own internal issues early on. Cherish the senior PM and senior Dev who did their best to clean up the mess.

 What advice do you have for clients with similar needs to yours?

The PM and senior dev were good, but our experience with Specno was that there were so many people going in and out of the project that the quality of the product suffered, and significant time delays were experienced.

If, for some reason, you will work with them, review the talent of the team they propose for you, and if you approve, make sure that the team is focused on your project and not double/triple dipping in other projects. Ensure continuity of the talent in the project.

We just needed a working MVP of the mobile app, which is, in essence, a habit-tracking app with AI integration using an already existing API. We also expected them to deliver and handover Figma files of the design, which up to now is still under their control and not ours.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

I have nothing positive to say about this question. It has taken 1.5 years, and the product they've made still has critical bugs that make the app UNUSABLE. And not to mention I, as a client, was the one who had to do a ton of QA for them, which ended up in too many bug reports.

NO, they did not, AND HAVE NOT, delivered items on time. It is still an app with critical bugs up to this time that make it UNUSABLE.  We are months, probably half a year, delayed already. 

They respond to the issue with empty words and with no urgency. They are aware of the issues, and there has been pretty much no change in how their workflow is. They did not give any priority to the project, treating it as if it were a pet project on the side/weekends.

Their product manager was generally passionate and professional about the project. That's all i can say. After that, the entire experience of working with Specno has been a disaster.

Hoom is a prop tech startup helping people make smarter real estate decisions and save money. We needed a minimum product to launch into the South African market. Work included designing the layout and look of the marketing website and web based app, making it look good and easy to use, and figuring out the technical details and product roadmap for building. We needed the website and app to be user-friendly, visually appealing, and technically sound, with a clear plan for how to develop it.

We've had a very good and successful partnership with Specno. The team provides insights into how our company should approach its digital products based on best practices. Specno uses data metrics and research to support their findings and the designs they produce. Specno's team is very good overall.

Specno meets deadlines and sometimes delivers work ahead of schedule. The team is efficient and helpful. We have weekly meetings, and Specno always presents a fair amount of work progress. I'm happy with their project management. Specno shares their work on Figma for us to review and comment it.

I'm impressed at Specno's adaptability with minimal information. The team takes great initiative in executing the designs we need to roll out. Specno has gone above and beyond and thinks a step further about things we haven't considered. Specno helps us navigate our product journey. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

I'm unsure if Specno did this since I wasn't present at the beginning of our engagement, I think Specno should provide a starter pack for potential customers that includes how the team likes to get briefed on projects to ensure clients provide information they fully understand. This would also help educate customers on how they should put together briefing templates or any limitations and specifications to include in request documents. 

Specno works with a lot of startup companies, and this would help a lot, but I know there are more experienced clients. The team is organized.

A good understanding of what a concept validation process entails. I learned a lot from this process and will be able to apply this to other projects. A good understanding of where further validation is required for my idea and how I can go about further validating the idea. The pitch document and the designs was extremely helpful to bring the idea to life.

Items were delivered on time and the various steps were communicated well. The project was not too difficult from a project management perspective as I mainly dealt with one individual with inputs from a designer as well. I was happy with the software used to guide me through the process.

Specno developed our website. There were a lot of complications with the way our website was designed, so we needed a professional to understand that.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Specno started off with the website’s design and did the development phase separately. The team initially researched our competitors. They benchmarked those competitors to ensure that my website looked better than theirs and checked what competing businesses were doing. Then, they started working on the website’s design. 

They provided advice on how I could generate more income through my website and what add-ons I could use. From there, they started working on the development phase. The key technologies that we used included Figma and PHP. 

For features and functionality, the website could design contracts for the end users. It also contained a library with information and publications. The team assisted me with organizing this library.

Tristan (Product Owner) worked with me throughout the entire process. However, different individuals were also involved in the design and development phases. These included two designers and one developer.

The design process went well. The Specno team was hands-on and provided excellent services. Overall, they definitely met my expectations. 

How did Specno perform from a project management standpoint?

Their project management and communication skills were excellent. In terms of budget, they were off in the beginning, but they were willing to compromise for a discount — I was grateful for that. They also delivered the project on time. To communicate, we used WhatsApp and email. They had their own project management tool. 

Meanwhile, Tristan was always available whenever I needed him. He went above and beyond to ensure my questions were answered by carrying out research and things like that. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

Specno was great at working with us as a startup. They stepped into the startup mind and assisted us by looking holistically at everything surrounding the business plan. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

We had a little misunderstanding because of our location differences, but that was so minor that it didn’t affect the project at all. I was still happy with the outcome.

Communicate your needs with Specno. Always note your needs via email so you can remind them down the line because they might forget. One of the things I did in our engagement was to consistently remind them about tasks that we might have spoken about a month or two before.

Requirements gathering, alignment, research, audit, and conceptualization phase: Discussions to identify and understand Paxi’s business goals, user types, and the goals of each user type. Competitor analysis and an audit of the existing Paxi website.

This was documented through audit tables, psych framework evaluation, user journey maps, and a consolidation of information gathered in the form of a presentation. Wireframe Phase: Designing the page structure, layout, user flows, and functionality of the system without color, graphics, and styles.

This was completed within Figma. There are numerous feedback and review sessions during this phase. The designers really took the time to understand the process which we wish to facilitate with the system and ensured that it would be able to effectively do so.

Design Phase: Specno provided a style test that provided new and timeless styles, colors, and other UI elements. The decisions they made were balanced between adhering to the aspects of our corporate identity / branding that are already well established, as well as introducing new aspects that were more aligned with our user types and their goals.

Each section within the style test is very aesthetically pleasing, and we could truly see the value in the direction Specno decided to take. Once the go-ahead on this style is given, the rest of the system screens are designed and the designs are either packaged as a downloadable deliverable from Figma, or prepared for development by Specno.

In this case, the designs will be organised within Figma to prepare for the development of the system.

• Specno surprised me with their eagerness to fully understand the Paxi goals and vision in order to ensure complete alignment. They were able to give us clear guidance and direction, and did so with speed and passion.

We needed help with the frontend design of our loyalty app.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Specno has helped us with frontend design for our loyalty app. Initially, we had a briefing phase before going into the actual design process. During this phase, we provided them with an outline of how our loyalty program works so that they could tailor its designs and create an app-based solution for that program.

After the briefing process, Specno designed our app from scratch using Figma. We had various review sessions during the design phase before reaching a final design. Now, another company is developing our app based on those designs.

As for its main features, the app can identify whether a customer is an existing or a new one. Based on that information, it sends them through different customer journeys. Once logged into our app, users can see their status in our loyalty program and their cashback balance. Additionally, we’re able to communicate personalized offers to specific customer groups.

The app hasn’t gone live yet, so we don’t have any metrics. However, working with Specno has been a very positive experience. They’ve brought a lot of knowledge to the table regarding frontend design and best practices, and they’ve been very collaborative. Their team clearly understood our brief from the start, and they delivered upon our specifications, designing the features and user journey we wanted.

How did Specno perform from a project management standpoint?

Specno’s project management is very good. They’re always in communication with us, and they’ve always stuck to timelines. If things need to be changed quickly, they make a plan to do it for us. We use Figma to collaborate and Microsoft Teams to communicate.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Specno’s expertise and experience are excellent. They deliver high-quality work, so I would recommend them to anyone.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It would be great if Specno encouraged us to think about how our app would work in different scenarios to ensure we’re considering all other channels that will plug into this app. This would allow us to look at it from an omnichannel perspective rather than an isolated app.
