What challenge were you trying to address with Rex Production & Post?

We had filmed a commercial for a client, but since the actors used were actual employees of the client's, they were shy on camera. We essentially needed to rerecord their lines and edit the audio back into the commercial to make it cleaner.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Rex helped us rerecord the lines of each actor featured in the commercial and edited the audio back into the video.

I worked with the owner, an audio engineer, and a technical support lead.

I found Rex through a Google search and compared them to other audio vendors in Portland. I chose to work with them because they had high ratings and positive reviews. They also seemed to be the only vendor we could find in the area with the specific software needed to complete the scope of our work.

We invested around $5,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project took place between December 2016 and February 2017.

They did an excellent job. Their staff remained professional and friendly throughout the engagement.

How did Rex Production & Post perform from a project management standpoint?

They were flexible around our scheduling needs, considering the limited availability we had with our team in Los Angeles.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The audio engineer we worked with on their team really knows what he's doing. They're not only technically savvy, but also very friendly and easy to work with.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They really like to roll out the red carpet for their Los Angeles clients, but I think it would help them to hire a client services manager to help them facilitate certain needs for larger clients.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be very clear about your needs. I'm sure they'd be more than happy to work with you and capable of facilitating any audio needs.

What challenge were you trying to address with Rex Production & Post?

They handled video production on a corporate film that I wrote and produced for SureID.

What was the scope of their involvement?

They worked with me and the creative director to produce a lot of visual elements, as well as with an animator on all of the animation. They did all the voiceover recording and talent coordination. They handled location shooting and also shot some separate footage. Then they edited it all into a four-and-a-half-minute film.

What is the team composition?

I worked with six members of their team.

How did you come to work with Rex Production & Post?

I've known Russ (owner, Rex) for probably 20 years. I’ve worked with them when I was a copywriter at various ad agencies or when I was a freelancer for other companies. They're the ones that I go to first with projects like this because I'm always happy with their work.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent around $15,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked on this project from March–April 2017.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The CEO and the president of SureID absolutely loved the final video. In fact, they said it was the best video the company had ever produced. They thought it cost a lot more money than it did. I no longer work for the company, however, so I don’t have statistics on how many people viewed the video on their website.

How did Rex Production & Post perform from a project management standpoint?

They're really easy to work with. They're organized. Their producer excels at coordinating talent for the video shoots. Russ is very intuitive when it comes to editing and sound effects. They’re outstanding when it comes to getting revisions done in a timely manner. They never complained about all the changes we made. The project turned out well, so I have no complaints. Rex did a great job.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They do good work and pay a lot of attention to detail. They’re extremely cost effective. Clients are always focused on the bottom line. While some agencies charge a lot of money for what they do, Rex is able to keep costs down.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Everybody can always improve, but nothing specific comes to mind.

Any advice for potential customers?

Have a clear understanding of what you want, but understand that quality takes time. You want speed but you have to give them time to do their work. If you know exactly what you want and are willing to let them take it and run with it, Rex is a good fit.

I’m the sole proprietor at Mt. Creative. We specialize in marketing consultations, advertising, event planning, and production.

What challenge were you trying to address with Rex Production & Post?

We help our client plan a large event for their prime clients every year. A lot of labor goes into the invitations because competing vendors are also throwing events at the same time. Our goal is to make the event as appealing as possible in order to attract a sizable crowd.  

We make elaborate invitations in the form of a three-dimensional box. The invites typically include a couple of videos that can also be viewed on the RSVP website. We needed a company that could produce engaging videos to accompany the invitations.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Rex took care of all our media production needs. We gave them a script that conveyed the general concept that we wanted to capture in the videos, and they gave them input on what needed to be added or modified to make the content more engaging than we could imagine.

They were also in charge of auditioning and selecting the talent featured in the videos, as well as scouting behind-the-scenes talent like choreographers. Other duties included obtaining the necessary permits and approvals, purchasing and renting props and set equipment. After finalizing background details, they moved on to directing, filming, editing, and producing the invitation videos.

What is the team composition?

I mainly interacted with the producer, who is a valuable resource when it comes to producing captivating content. They also assigned a videographer, proprietor, and two engineers to assist with the project.

How did you come to work with Rex Production & Post?

We used smaller production companies to work on the video invitations in the past, but their quality doesn’t compare to Rex’s full-service production house. We’ve used their audio production services for years, so we trusted their brilliant team to utilize their state-of-the-art equipment and skilled engineers to create engaging videos.

How much have you invested with them?

In 2016, we spent around $55,000-$60,000 on their production services. The following year, the budget increased to $80,000-$85,000. Unlike most production companies that we’ve collaborated with, there are never any surprises at the end of the project. They never complete services that exceed the budget without getting our approval.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started filming videos for the first event in May 2016. For the most recent project, we started filming in June 2017 and wrapped up post-production in August 2017.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

In the two years that we have worked with Rex, our client has surpassed its attendance goals. At the most recent event, the number of attendees exceeded the venue’s max capacity. Clearly, their videos served their promotional purpose.

How did Rex Production & Post perform from a project management standpoint?

Whereas their competitors will risk sacrificing quality to cut corners, Rex is consistently productive. We especially appreciate their efforts to keep us involved in the project and explaining information that was beyond our expertise. They are also effective at keeping our team on track and ensuring that we are approving materials on time.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Rex revealed that it's possible to create incredible content with a modest budget. Creativity is the driving force in all of their work, but aesthetics never take priority over their client’s business needs. Their self-motivation is another great characteristic that they possess. I prefer to have a laissez-faire approach when using vendors, so their ability to manage themselves is very convenient for us.

We’re in the bidding process for an upcoming project, and their presentation, documentation, and the questions they asked about the project are far more professional than the other companies we’ve interviewed.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There have been moments of heated discussions regarding their pricing, but we always come to a resolution. Arguments can be painful but avoiding confrontation but will cause more harm than good. Taking their client’s perspective into account could minimize conflicts.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

They aren’t the most affordable company, but they are the most effective when it comes to developing appealing content. You will get the most out of your budget with Rex.

What challenge were you trying to address with Rex Production & Post?

We needed to produce a large number of videos at an affordable price point.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Rex worked on a campaign for our retail partners. They provided full-service video production, from pre- through post-production. We had the scripts and storyboards completed, and they worked on the logistical side of completing the videos. We filmed videos that involved both talking heads and actors. Rex did video editing, audio sweetening, motion graphics, and other production tasks.

What is the team composition?

There were four people on the team. I worked with engineers, directors, and a project manager.

How did you come to work with Rex Production & Post?

Rex was a referral. We considered a few other companies, but they had top-notch facilities and were incredibly organized and professional. Their price was also within our budget.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together at JELD-WEN from 2011–2016.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The videos that Rex helped produce have received hundreds of thousands of views. Their lead audio engineer is one of the best in the Northwest. The entire team is outstanding, which is why I eventually hired them when I started my own company.

How did Rex Production & Post perform from a project management standpoint?

Rex was great at communicating, taking feedback, and meeting deadlines. We never had any issues. Regardless of the time or day, they were easy to get a hold of. They were proactive and willing to get things done. The office manager and lead producer was extremely easy to work with, detail-oriented, and well-prepared. She always had a plan but was still willing to be flexible when needed.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They have a great team, which translates into an effective and positive company culture.

No, not that I can think of.

Have a vision for what you want the project to look like, and they'll help you accomplish it.

I’m the owner of a production company. We create long-format commercials.

What challenge were you trying to address with Rex Production & Post?

Initially, we wanted to establish an editorial house for video editing and audio recording in an efficient, cost-effective manner.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We’ve completed hundreds of projects over the course of 20 years. In the beginning, we primarily contracted them for video editing and audio recording/editing. Eventually, they’ve transitioned into video production, so we’ve used them in that capacity as well.

For a typical project, they would assemble a crew to help shoot videos. I would serve as director while they handle the production services and put the video together for me. After I do a rough edit, they would do a final edit and fine-tune the audio in postproduction.

Alternatively, I might shoot something myself and pass it to them for editing. I’ve also given them graphic projects where they use Adobe programs such as After Effects to incorporate special effects.

What is the team composition?

I usually work with Tara (Producer, Rex Production & Post), though, for more involved projects, I generally communicate with 2–3 engineers.

How did you come to work with Rex Production & Post?

It's hard to say. When I first started my production company, I think them being in the community and part of the network, I can't remember if I was referred to them or if I just found them through a publication.

After so many years, it’s hard to say. When I first started my company, either someone referred them or I found them through a publication. I believe they were already a part of the video production network. We had an initial meeting, and from then on I was satisfied with their product and the process.

What is the status of this engagement?

Their work lasted from March 1993–April 2018.

We’ve recently finished our latest project a few weeks ago. However, we continue to do little edits with them from time to time, and I’m currently working with them. I consider this an ongoing relationship.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

While I’ve worked with numerous vendors to spread out the work, I’ve worked with Rex Production & Post the most. Their quality of work is top notch and buttoned up. If I had to score them, I would give them a high rating.

How did Rex Production & Post perform from a project management standpoint?

They’re cognizant of our schedule and are responsible when it comes to following up. They’re nimble, adapting well to changing circumstances. Although there were rare miscommunications, they’ve always proven themselves with their strong deliverables.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I appreciate their response time the most. They don’t leave me hanging when I have an inquiry, responding very quickly. I’ve never had to confront them for an answer. They’re a solid support system, and their pricing structure is reasonable. They haven’t become over- nor underpriced.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Nothing comes to mind. I’m satisfied with their work.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Rex works to the customer’s advantage; they’re willing to collaborate and develop a project or they can simply follow orders without offering input. They have a knack for fitting the customer’s mold rather than having the customer fit theirs.
