We hired Precode to evaluate our existing SaaS app and design a new UX. We knew there were several bottle-necks in our existing legacy design and we used the re-design opportunity to take a fresh look at what clients were trying to achieve from our app. Precode listened to our challenges and then rapidly created high-fidelity wireframes. After daily reviews and frequent iterations Precode delivered wireframes then they added UI elements to the designs.

The output was ready-to-code Figma designs for every page of our app.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

All of our internal team (customer success, developers, business development) all like the designs and think they will help increase conversion rates. We have not built the app yet so we cannot measure objectively the improvement yet.

Ben and Matt were very responsive. There was daily back-and-forth via email and video calls, but this always felt easy and natural like having inhouse designers on our team. Designs were delivered super-fast; much faster than other agencies were proposing. We were blown away by how much high-quality work they achieved in a short space of time.

Precode saved time by not going overboard with project plans and stakeholder reviews and getting signoff; they knew what needed to be done, and they just got on with it.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Their speed and intelligence. Some of the UX challenges we were trying to solve had a lot of competing requirements and there was no 'copy-paste' solution. Precode cut straight to the issue and came up with neat intuitive solutions pretty much first time. Even though we internally know our product and our users better than anyone else, these guys came up with solutions to our UX challenges that made us think "OK yea perfect, why didn't we think of that!".

Are there any areas for improvement or something Precode could have done differently?

No I can't think of any improvement. For larger more process-driven companies they might prefer a more ordered way of raising and resolving comments from multiple people. But Precode's more informal creative process was perfect for us, and meant we didn't waste time bogged-down in lists and tickets.

Precode's team was very quick in turning things around. Regarding communication, we used emails, phone calls, and Slack.

Precode's knowledge of what was trending in the industry was impressive. They were able to bring that knowledge and implement it.

I didn't think there was anything they could improve on because everything about their work was good.

Go with them with an open mind to what they offer because they understand what's happening in the marketplace.

Before embarking upon a 3-month delivery project, we wanted to have an idea of how we could design a UI that would be simple and appealing for end-users without compromising the potentially complex functionality on offer.

Precode's brief was to understand the type of niche enterprise software being delivered, understand the end user's perspective, the technical landscape and constraints we would need to take into account, and provide a design that our teams could work to that met all of those needs.

Precode delivered on time, kept in constant communication, and despite being remote, absolutely felt like part of the team with stand-ups, ad-hoc meetings, regular loom videos, etc., as needed to arrive at the end goal.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Precode's skills and experience are top-notch, and the level of quality they provide is exceptional, but to some extent I would expect that of any vendor that I selected. What makes Precode absolutely unique is the way that they work as an extension of the project team, working as people with great skills alongside our own staff as equals and colleagues.

The engagement doesn't feel like a classic vendor/customer relationship, their approach just means that they slot into the team for the duration of the engagement leaving us not only with the deliverables but also on track to deliver something better than we'd envisaged through using their experience to challenge our assumptions.

I have absolutely nothing negative to say about Precode, each time we have worked with them has been a massive boost to the project.

I’m the CEO of Specular Systems, a software development company. We outsource to Georgia and focus purely on custom software development.

What challenge were you trying to address with Precode?

We’re highly technical and focus on backend and API development to create internal business tools. However, for user-facing products or public-facing software that need nice UI/UX, we work with Precode because they’re experts in that area.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Precode has helped us develop a sandbox game where people can use bricks of different materials like iron, coal, and wood to build things like axes and other tools needed for the game. Additionally, users can sell some of the tools they create to other users in the game’s marketplace. The game also has a map with various different islands of different sizes consisting of millions of blocks. Users can buy those islands as if they were real estate properties.

For this game, Precode has helped us design and develop the UI for the map to allow users to wander around the islands and select which pieces of land to buy. They’ve also helped us design the in-game assets and textures. In addition to that, Precode has also helped us design the branding for the game, including logos and other marketing assets.

As for the process itself, we started with a briefing process so that Precode understood what we were doing. Throughout the initial process, we mostly provided them with some rough ideas, which we discussed over the phone. We didn’t focus on creating formal documents because, as a startup, we move rapidly, and creating documents can take time.

From there, Precode was in charge of creating the entire branding, assets, UI, and textures for the game. As for the technology stack, they’ve mostly used Figma to design the UI, as well as other Adobe tools to create the UX. For example, they’ve used Photoshop to create the in-game textures.

What is the team composition?

We’ve mostly worked with Ben (Co-Founder) and Matt (Co-Founder & Creative Director), but there were other teammates from Precode working in the background.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent around £30,000–£40,000 (approximately $37,000–$49,000 USD) on this project.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started communicating with Precode in January 2022, but the actual engagement started around February 2022. Although this particular project is unfortunately not doing very well due to the financial crisis and other factors, I’m definitely going to use Precode again for other projects because I’m very happy with what they’ve produced. Therefore, our engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

When we launched the game, Precode did a lot of work on Discord and got us from zero to 40,000 members within 2–3 months, which was outstanding. Additionally, everyone liked the branding they created, as it seemed to fit perfectly with the game.

At one point, we reached around 10,000–12,000 players. We created various batches of islands for the game called zones. Zone one was our biggest batch, with around 18,000 islands. Although we haven’t opened the other zones yet due to the financial crisis, we managed to sell around 11,000 islands from zone one, which was a very successful result.

Before this crisis, we also reached a couple of thousand simultaneous players playing constantly, which was fantastic. However, as previously mentioned, the game isn’t doing well at the moment. Still, the current situation doesn’t have to do with our technology or the designs; it’s a result of the current market conditions.

How did Precode perform from a project management standpoint?

Precode’s project management is great. They’re constantly available via Slack, which makes it feel like they never go to bed. In addition to Slack, we’ve used GitHub and Trello for project management, as well as Zoom and Skype for video conferencing.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Precode’s ability to take us from zero to 40,000 users in a few months was incredible. Additionally, the branding they’ve created is spot-on, demonstrating that they’re experts in their field.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Most of our collaboration with Precode has been remote through video calls. However, meeting in person would be helpful. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the general conditions in the industry, people now work remotely, so this isn’t a negative quality of Precode. Still, it would be better if we worked in person in a more traditional style.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Communication is key to any engagement, and design and branding work requires a lot of communication. Therefore, you need to be completely open with Precode regarding what you’re trying to do. Provide them with as much detail as possible because the more detail you give them, the better chances they’ll get it right the first time.

We did a weeks sprint, the day before we had an in-depth call to outline all our requirements in more detail. After each day there was a video recording sent to outline progress, ask questions and look at potential issues.
